Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

I still want Void dammit.
Void *is* quite nice, and we absolutely should raise it at some point... but it's expensive and generalist, and right now we're getting mroe out of targeted buys.

I suspect it might be worthwhile to buy it sometime this enlightenment rank, though. Actually, a level of void, a level of earth, and some skills would do it, and be reasonably in turn with both our long-term buy plans and efficiency.

If they're all big ticket items, then it's probably worth putting them off until after the mission, and boosting storytelling.

[X] Raise Perform (Storytelling) with 3 XP

Thing to note about storytelling. It's an RP buy. It's not hugely useful after we leave here, it's not actually a big boost to the rolls we will make (average increase of 2), and we're already better at it than most would expect us to be. It's also pretty inefficient as insight goes, and, sadly, lacks a level 3 mastery. That's not to say that we *shouldn't* do it. I personally will be abstaining here rather than voting against. It's just worth realizing that it's a choice to put characterization over optimization.

As we're now, we roll 5k3 on Storytelling (6k4 by Voiding it), which is pretty decent for an Insight 2 Crab Bushi. Raising Sincerity or Courtier to 3 nets us a total of an extra 3 points to Insight which is a little help for us to get into Insight 3 over time. Storytelling is situational, more than RP buy, and we'll be using other social rolls more often than Storytelling.

There's also the option of banking them all, but given the current circunstances... we'll need to raise social and aim for 6k3 on those rolls. We have Air ring on 3 by the by.

I think I got kept dice and rolled dice mixed up, and overestimated the effect of the buy on our rolls. +2 really isn't worth the effort on something we'll probably only use the once. Plus at the moment it really isn't that good of an RP buy. After all, what has happened recently that would improve our storytelling? We got the second point after we got a massive exploding dice chain telling a story to the Lion clan. That clearly justified it as a RP buy. We haven't had anything for RP reasons since then that justifies it. Might buy it after this castle though if we end up doing well enough to justify it for RP reasons.

Well the Mirumoto are the traditional rivals of the Kakita...
...and if we wind up in a katana duel with a Mirumoto, we have already lost. *They're the traditional rivals of the Kakita*. There is no way that it could *possibly* make sense for us to invest enough in our katana-duelling skills to survive something like that.

No, that's the point where we start pulling out lines like "Mirumoto-san, the Shadowlands are coming, and once my business is done here, I will be returning to the Wall, to do my part against the coming hordes. Do you truly believe that my life's blood is better spent here, dirtying the floor to assuage your pride than there, standing between Rokugan and the enemies of all that is good and holy in the world?"

I didn't mean dualing. I meant situations that a katana would be more useful then our club. Or if our club is broken. That way we have a back up weapon.

I'm just saying that if we were going to learn how to sword good, the Dragon lands make a lot of sense to do so.
Fair enough. This would be arguably be an excellent place to pick up more skill in the katana, if we wished to do so. It's still not worth doing in the first place.

Our club isn't all that likely to be broken - and if it is, not only do we have a basic proficiency in katana, we literally have a basic proficiency in any weapon we can lay our hands on. Even if we do wind up using our katana at that point, improving kenjutsu by a point or two won't make us hugely mote effective. Given how precious exp is, and how much we have that we want to spend it on, throwing it into optimizing edge cases just isn't worthwhile.

Can you think of a situation where our katana would be more useful to us as a weapon than out club? I can't.

I can. In a place where we don't have enough room to swing our club. As for it breaking it did back when we faced that oni. By the end of the battle it had cracked.

It might be used less, but I find the coming roll with it to be rather important. Also, as a crab and "Hero", a lot of our important diplomacy we might end up doing is likely to involve relaying information regarding situations we've been involved in. We can use Storytelling for that.

Not much of an RP'er, but couldn't storytelling be shoehorned into most discussions? Pull an old man Abe Lincoln and go meandering off about samurai portraits in bathrooms but somehow come back to how the Crab are the best ever and you should totally give him cash.
Storytelling is an extremely common thing in social interaction.

Now I want to do this!

Your eyes snap open, the pleasant haze fading from your mind. Sitting up straight, you look around to see who spoke. But, of course, it came from the other side of the room. The partition is blocking your view of the speaker, and you blink a few times as your thoughts begin returning to focus.

Naturally, your first reaction is to reach for a weapon. Thankfully, neither your tetsubo nor your katana are near, so you avoid making a fool of yourself. Then you awaken fully, and realize just what has happened.

This is a public bath for the castle. It only makes sense that other people would be using it. After all, you only saw one half of the room. There was no way for you to make a complete examination of the area.

"Yes," you respond, relaxing and settling back into the bath. "I'm sorry for disturbing you."

"Oh, that's fine," the woman responds. She sounds about your age, perhaps a little older. "I really wasn't disturbed, just surprised. Most people aren't in this bath around this time."

You lean your head back and think for a bit. It's the afternoon, but still a few hours till evening. If anyone was going to clean up they'd have likely done it before now, and it's still too early for an evening wash. For a bath located a fair distance away from the main castle, it would only make sense that it would be so empty.

"I suppose that's why the servant led me here, then," you say as you continue to exult in the heat. "So that I could rest in peace after my arrival."

"Arrival?" the woman asks. "You're from outside the castle?"

"I am indeed," you answer. "My name is Hiruma Sosuke."

There's a splashing sound from her end, as if she stood up straight quickly. "The hero of the Battle of Skulking Shadows?"

Your brow furrows at the woman's words. It wasn't so strange for Shinjo Wanli to have heard of you, considering the realm of the Unicorn is not too far away from Crab lands. However, the Dragon are a good distance further and more isolated as well. It wouldn't surprise you that the various Daimyo have heard of your part in that conflict, but a random Samurai in a bathing room?

It's a strange coincidence. Then again, you already knew your fame had spread further than you'd originally believed. It's been years from that battle, and you haven't exactly been avoiding attention in any of the cities you've visited. Even still…

"I'm honestly quite surprised that tale has spread so far," you say softly.

"Oh, you are quite well known, Hiruma-san," she responds. "Everyone in the castle has been following rumors of your caravan for some time."

"They traveled so swiftly?" you say, grinning. "Well, I hope you've not heard anything too terrible."

"News of your travels is filled with nothing but excitement and honor, Hiruma-san..." she says, trailing off before making an embarrassed squeak. "Oh, please forgive me, Hiruma-san! I completely forgot to introduce myself. I am Mirumoto Hanabi."

And now is when I wish we had Lore Heraldry or Lore Bushido to check how important she is.

Okay Sousuke you got this, you got this, it's just a woman, who is naked on the other side of the baths....damn you imagination.
Breathe
You got this.

"Forgiven Mirumoto-sama, and it is a pleasure to meet you, well your voice, you know what I mean."

Smooth, quick subject change.

"So what brings Mirumoto-sama to the baths at such an odd time?"

I am Hiruma Sousuke, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

"So what brings Mirumoto-sama to the baths at such an odd time?"
She was planted here in preparation for our arrival, just like the other courtier who awaited in the dining areas, the one in the garden, and so forth. Our enemy has the advantage of numbers and prepared ground; they have had ample opportunity to brief their personnel and prepare social ambushes. Like a young woman entranced by tales of our exploits in the bath, where she might be so very charmed by us while encouraging us to imagine her looks- and thereby charm us in turn. How cunning of them; I would have expected this more from the Scorpion, but clearly the Dragon are not to be underestimated in the field of intrigue.

No, I'm not paranoid. Shush. It's not like they have any shortage of courtiers with nothing better to do than that sitting around the castle, anyway.
