Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

I do wonder what is in our future with all this: Good both at the court and at the battlefield, I'm half expecting us to be given a castle to rule at some point.

Time to learn what kind of effect if any our efforts are likely to have and what will come of Sasha's death?

I imagine both that and the reverse have happened far more often then either clan would care to admit.

I wonder how a spider deck plays... I stopped playing before they became really prevalent.

[x] Timeskip to Kyuden Tonbo

You nod to the Ashigaru one last time, and then excuse yourself. There really isn't any more to say, and you don't want to ruin this moment you've managed to achieve with them. They talk amongst themselves as you leave, and laughter follows you. A smile graces your lips as you head forward. After all that has happened, it feels good to have brought some joy into the world.

Yasuki Goro slows his horse up on ahead, but does not stop. The caravan, of course, keeps moving. Your superior gave no order to cease, and without it progress will not be delayed. As soon as he is apace with you he urges his steed on, matching your horse.

"Is there something I may do for you, my Lord?" you ask, bowing to him from your saddle.

"Not at this moment," Yasuki Goro responds. He pulls a scroll out of his sleeve and hands it to you. "But there is something I can do for you."

"For me?" you ask, taking the scroll. "My Lord does me honor."

"It is nothing," Yasuki Goro says. "In truth, I am merely a courier at this moment." He motions to the scroll. "Your sensei gave me that to give to you when you were ready. It details the next step of your training."

"Sensei gave you this?" you ask, looking at the scroll with reverence. "But… Please forgive me, Yasuki-sama, but how do you know I am ready?"

"You slew an Oni, Sosuke-san," Yasuki Goro says, quirking an eyebrow at you. "I think that is more than enough indication you are prepared to advance in your School."

"I… Thank you, Yasuki-sama," you say, bowing again. "I will do my best to hold true to the confidence you have in me."

"I'm sure you'll do fine," Yasuki Goro responds. He grins, his eyes lighting up in mirth. "And don't thank me yet. From what little I understand of your school, training to advance requires some rather… blunt focus."

You blink. "I'm not sure I understand, Yasuki-sama."

"You will," he says, waving a hand. "When you read the scroll, ask Shirou to help you. His aid in your training will become rather obvious soon enough, and I believe it will help you greatly in learning the techniques inscribed within."

"I will be sure to follow your advice, my Lord," you respond, setting the scroll down on your saddle. "I'm sure it can only help me in the days ahead."

"I hope so," the courtier says, riding on ahead with a chuckle. You're not entirely certain why he seems so amused, but you've long since given up on trying to read your superior. He operates on a level currently beyond your capabilities, and the best you can do is hope to keep up.

You smile as you look down at the scroll. It is not very large, but that only makes sense. The basics of your School have already been taught to you. Years of hard training have incorporated the strong, sturdy techniques of the Hida into your very bones. All this scroll will contain is knowledge advancing what you have already learned, building upon previous training.

And with this, I take one more step forward, you think as the sun rises higher, noon approaching. Let us see what the future shall bring.

Your body is a mass of bruises as your caravan finally makes its way through the hill lands. Kyuden Tonbo, the city of the Dragonfly, rests but half an hour's travel before you. They are bit a Minor Clan, without the resources or grandeur of a Great Clan, but even still after a week seeing nothing but little villages the city makes for a marvelous sight.

The city rested within a shallow valley at the foot of the mountains, houses and roads settled atop the hills to create a strange undulating effect with the earth itself. A low wall surrounded the city, only about twice the height of a man. This could provide some protection, of course, though it hardly seemed able to stop any sizable assault. Those walls did seem to glimmer strangely in the light of the sun, however. Perhaps they are enchanted by some strange magicks?

The most prominent aspect of the city, however, is the spire that rests at its center. Kyuden Tonbo proper is a towering, spired pagoda a full eight stories in height. Each layer atop the other is smaller than the last, making the castle of the Tonbo Family look like a great spike jutting out of the world. Most interestingly, however, is that each floor is of a different color, green at the base before moving to purple, to pink and eventually orange at the top.

It is hard to focus on that, however, though the ache that has overcome your world. You understand full well the meaning behind Yasuki Goro's words now. This segment of your training involved advancing your School's focus on endurance to new heights. All assaults had to be weathered like the earth itself, unyielding and unbreakable.

In practice, this translated to Shirou beating on you with his fists every night for the last four days.

You groan under your breath as you shift in your saddle. Everything, everywhere, hurts. You've never properly appreciated just how strong your companion is. Shirou has trained his body to perfection, his powerful muscles striking quickly and brutally against your poor flesh.

However, by following the instructions on the scroll you have capitalized on training you have undergone since you were ten years old. Your body has become more resilient, your bones sturdier. Even more, the exercises have taught you to better allow your armor to take blows that would inflict great suffering upon you, all the better to counterattack and destroy your foes.

The Mountain Does Not Move. Earth is known for many things, but speed is not one of them. However, Earth takes blows every day from all manner of sources. It endures the howling Winds, the tumultuous Waters and the wrath of Fire. It persists beneath the tread of every foot of every creature all at once, never surrendering.

Earth may be worn away with time, but that is merely a transition. It shall last until time itself ends, and the Kharmic Wheel is broken. You know this fact as surely as you know yourself. These lessons, and more, you have taken in to your heart. You will not forget them anytime soon.

Two guards stand at the gate, their armor painted green and purple with an orange trim. Frankly, it all clashes terribly in your eyes. How could anyone go about with such ridiculous colors on their armor? What was the point? After all, armor was meant to protect you. Being so flashy with it seems a waste of time and resources better spent elsewhere.

"I beg your pardon, noble Crab Samurai," the older of the two says. "But we must ask that you halt and identify yourselves."

"I am Yasuki Goro," your superior says, handing over your traveling papers. "I believe I sent word ahead to your Lady of our arrival?"

"We did indeed receive word but a day ago, Yasuki-sama," the guard says, looking over the papers. He nods and hands them back. "Everything appears to be in order. Please, follow me."

The guard leads you into the city, and you take note of your surroundings with interest. You have never been within the holdings of a Minor Clan before, though you've seen Samurai who have come from them. You mostly know members of the Minor Clan of the Wolf or the Monkey, for they are close to the Crab and visit fairly regularly. However, you've never had extended contact with people from either Clan.

In truth, there do not appear to be many differences from the cities of other Clans, though noticeably smaller in scale. Kyuden Tonbo is more of a large town than a proper city, though you pass through a bustling marketplace on your way to the castle. Commerce seems to be operating quite smoothly within these lands.

Thinking past your initial revulsion at the handling of money going on about you, the fact that Kyuden Tonbo is doing so well strikes you as odd. The Dragon Unicorn War was but twenty years ago, and the rampage of Moto Shinichiro but two years after that. Both of these conflicts left scars upon the lands of the Dragon. How, then, is this city doing so well? It has been but one generation since the fires of war, but the remnants of its presence are nowhere in sight.

A beautiful woman with long, silky black hair greats you as your caravan comes up to the castle. There is no inner wall, just a long series of steps coming up to an expansive set of doors made of darkened wood inset with the Mon of the Dragonfly crafted of several different colored gems. The shine in a rainbow hue across the door, almost blinding as they reflected the light of the sun.

The woman, wearing a shimmering green Kimono decorated with flying Dragonflies, bows to your party as your caravan stops. She seems young, all things considered not even two decades older than yourself. She holds herself with the confidence of age, however, tall and proud. It would be folly to underestimate this one simply because of her lack of years.

"May the blessings of Heaven be upon you this day, Yasuki Goro-san," the woman says. "I am Tonbo Akane, Champion of the Dragonfly and Gatekeeper of the Dragon." She smiles broadly as she rises, eyes alight. "Let me be the first to truly welcome you to my city, and to share with you our hospitality."

"Your greeting does me honor, Tonbo Akane-sama," Yasuki Goro says, getting off his horse and bowing low. You follow suit, emulating your superior. "While I do not wish to impose upon you, I cannot deny I look forward to your people's geniality." He grins. "I've not had the chance to experience the Dragonfly, and I am always one to enjoy something new."

"A fine sentiment!" Tonbo Akane says. "Then please, enter within my home and enjoy tea with me. I have read your letter many times these last few days, and I feel there is much we have to discuss."

"That seems like a fine idea," Yasuki Goro responds. He turns to you. "Sosuke-san, please see to our things while I converse with the honorable Champion. Afterward, if you wish to join us you may. However, within the walls of Kyuden Tonbo I am sure I will come to no danger, and if you would like to explore the city then I shall allow it."
