Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

3.13
[x] Gman

"Alright?" you ask, tasting the word. Truthfully, you're not sure what it even means any more. "What counts as alright, Shirou-san?" You shake your head, clearing your thoughts. "I will tell you what happened, my friend. As to if I'm alright? I honestly don't know right now. All I can do is push forward and endure."

You take a deep breath, steadying yourself. Even just thinking about what happened is… distressing. It brings a throbbing in your skull, as if someone was stabbing it lightly with a knife. Frowning, you ignore the sensation and carry on.

"As the creature screamed I found myself in a world where the Empire had fallen," you say, restraining a shudder at the memory. You can still imagine it all so clearly, that horrible lie you were so convinced was truth. "The darkness of the south had consumed us all... I was shattered, tortured, pushed past anything a man could endure...and then told to chose between my mother and my father."

"Sosuke-sama," Shirou whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "That is…"

"I chose to die with them, and the illusion shattered as the creature raged," you continue, pressing on while you still have the drive. "Then I burned. I burned with the fire of the sun searing my skin and soul. The white light coursed through me such that I couldn't think, I couldn't breathe. All I could do was move and attack the creature with everything I was."

You inhale, and then exhale. You are being far more detailed here than you had been with your superior. You're not entirely certain why. You respect Yasuki Goro deeply, but it is not the same as talking with Shirou. The courtier is your superior, while the monk is your friend. It is simply… easier, to speak with him about this.

Memories, what little remains, assault you. But they are not like true memories, not a recollection of events. You instead have vague images and feelings. Anger… disgust… conviction… All this and more snakes through your thoughts as you try to pull the events of the battle into focus. You have to wrestle with it, lest it overtake you and pull you away from the present.

"I managed to focus a little as Shasa called out to me," you go on. "I could hear her. but I couldn't recognize her. All that mattered was killing that creature, so I did. And as I did, the portal deepened. I had to stop it too, so I poured my fire, my hate, my power into it. I poured it deep, and the doorway closed." You shake your head. "But not enough, not nearly enough."

You turn to the window and look outside. The view isn't particularly spectacular. All you see is a series of rooftops illuminated by the still rising sun. This is simply a village, just like any that can be found in Rokugan. But it is also the representation of what you fought for, what you managed to save. The sight of it helps you push on, continuing to the most painful part of your recollection.

"When the fire died, there was nothing left but pain and exhaustion," you whisper. "I was in no position to stop Shasa as she closed the portal, somehow." You close your eyes, pushing back the memory of her final smile. "And as she died, I collapsed. I don't know what happened to me, I truly don't. I only wonder… if I had been stronger somehow, would we still have our friend?"

"That is an unfair question, Sosuke-sama," Shirou says, stepping forward and placing a hand on your shoulder. "You did all that you could, and even more besides. I doubt there is any Samurai in the Empire who could have done what you did."

"Shirou-san, I don't even know what I did," you exclaim, turning around and knocking Shirou's arm away. "I wasn't even myself when I fought! Something else used my hands, directed that fire. It was everything I could do not to fall apart!"

"If you do not know," Shirou says, uncaring that you struck away his hand. He smiles at you, his expression gentle. "Then perhaps that is the best place to start. The Dragon hold much knowledge, and their neighbors, the Phoenix, hold even more. You might be able to learn what happened from them."

Your friends words make you stop short, your reply dying in your mouth. You hadn't thought of that. The Dragon are very wise in spiritual matters, and the Phoenix are without question the masters of magic and understanding the kami. If you tell some of their scholars what happened, you might be able to get proper answers.

But on the other hand, Yasuki Goro mentioned he wanted to be careful about who learned of these events. It could be very bad if the wrong people learned all the details of what occurred. Whatever you decide to do, you will need to be wary.

[x] This all is a lot to take in my friend. What happened to me... I must learn more. No doubt about it. You never know when it may occur again or whom I may turn against. Lets make our way there for now and if the opportunity arises and we manage to find a capable and discreet scholar lets investigate. How about you? Have ever heard of anything similar happening? Maybe there is a Temple we can go and look for more clues?

Minor spelling-error:
This should be breathe. <Breath> is the noun and <breathe> is the verb.

Even with your reservations, Shirou's words make sense. To live in ignorance merely leaves you open to more dangers. If there is a chance to understand what is happening to you, then you must pursue it. Carefully, of course, for it would not do to cause your Lord trouble. Caution will be pf the utmost importance in the days to come.

But even taking the greatest of diligence, seeking answers is a risk. However, you can't see that you have much choice in the matter. To simply ignore these oddities in your life seems inconceivable. They are just too dangerous to leave alone. If answers exist out there then you are going to find them, no matter what misfortune you venture in the attempt.

"This all is a lot to take in my friend," you respond, your earlier trepidation dying in the face of your new resolve. "What happened to me… I must learn more. There is no doubt about it. You never know when it may occur again or whom I may turn against."

"I can see why that might be concerning," Shirou says. "Though from what I understand while taken by the fire you were compelled to act against Jigoku." He brings his hand together, as if in prayer. "I am not so certain you need to fear clashing with innocents should the flame rise once more."

"But there's no guarantee of that, is there?" you ask. "I am sorry, my friend. I trust your judgement, but this isn't something I can leave to hope alone. I must be sure."

"I can understand that sentiment as well," Shirou says, once more putting a hand on you shoulder. "Whatever you decide to do, Sosuke-sama, I will give you my support."

The monk smiles at you, and you feel your own lips quirk up in response. Shirou is solid, like the mountains themselves. You feel some of your tension ease at his words, and take solace in his continued friendship. Despite all the horrors you have both endured, your friend stands tall and strong beside you. Amongst turmoil, he is a rock weathering all storm and tide.

You let out a breath, anxiety bleeding away. It is still there, a kernel of unease resting within the core of your being. Now, though, instead of agitation dominating your thoughts it has receded to a mere irritation that is far easier to ignore. It is intriguing how a feeling so powerful might fade away as quickly as it came, vanishing almost like mist.

You sincerely hope it remains that way.

"Let's make our way to Dragon Lands for now," you say, drawing upon new strength. "And if the opportunity arises and we manage to find a capable and discreet scholar, we shall investigate."

"That sounds like a wise course of action to me, Sosuke-sama," Shirou says. "Amongst the Dragon and the Phoenix I am sure you can discover the truth of this matter."

"How about you?" you ask. "Have ever heard of anything similar happening? Maybe there is a Temple we can go and look for more clues?"

"Alas, Sosuke-sama, I have not," Shirou responds, shaking his head and removing his hand. "What you have described is a mystery to me. If I held the answers you seek, I would give them freely. But as it stands, I am of little help to you."

"It is alright, my friend," you respond, smiling. "I was reaching too far. After all, it would be strange for life to be so convenient."

"Life is a journey full of struggle and growth," Shirou says, nodding in agreement. "Though sometimes the world can surprise you."

"If it is a pleasant surprise, and we find the answers we seek swiftly, then I'll have no issue," you say. "I could do with less

"I can understand that," Shirou says. He bows to you. "I will leave you to your rest, Sosuke-sama. I wish you a good day."

"And to you, Shirou-san," you say, bowing back.

The monk leaves the room, and you are left alone. You sit down on your bed and take the cup of water from before, downing it all in a single gulp. It is no longer cool, but it is still refreshing. You start a little seeing a teakettle next to it, and realize Shirou must have left it there for you.

A smile graces your lips as you pour yourself some tea and take a sip. Once again you take a moment to appreciate your friend and all he has done for you. You raise your cup to him in salute, though he is not there. It seems the least you can do for someone who has stood by you through both good times and bad.

In truth, you're not sure you would have made it this far without him.

o\O/o

Two days pass without incident, and you recovery swiftly with plentiful rest and helpings of food. The villagers wait upon your every need, eager to be of service. Their earlier animosity has long since vanished, broken by the effort you have taken on their behalf. All that remains now is gratitude, along with all the respect that should have been your due earlier.

With the passing of your body's aches, you also feel some of the weariness within your soul abide. While the wounds to your spirit still persist, you feel far more like your old self again. You have a goal, and you have a duty to perform. So long as you keep focused on that, you feel that you will be able to push past the lingering melancholy you feel within your heart.

You look back at Tangan-Mura as your caravan finally begins it trek north, making its way toward Kyuden Tonbo. The people there gather at the edge to see you off. It's almost a celebration, really, the peasants laughing and smiling with gratitude. You can hear the good cheer for some time after leaving, resounding throughout the hills.

Within a few days you will finally be there and at your goal. Oh, there will still be a little way to go yet past that Minor Clan holding, but for all intents and purposes you will be in Dragon lands once you arrive. Finally, after so long, you are reaching the end of your journey.

That fact fills you with mixed feelings, and you can see similar thoughts amongst your comrades. The Servants are, of course, quiet and out of the way, but the Ashigaru as well appear rather subdued. Normally they would speak amongst themselves, but today they are silent and withdrawn. Shirou is taking the time to meditate atop the wagon, and Yasuki Goro has resumed his usual position at the head of the group.

Your superior, in particular, appears deep in thought. This is not especially strange, for the courtier is often considering matters of great import, but today he seems especially engrossed in his musings. His eyes stare ahead, though you don't think he's truly acknowledging what he's looking at. His attention is focused inward, not on the world around him.

There is time yet before your arrival, though that will swiftly close. You just need to decide what you're going to do with it.
