Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

No point in holding out 4 EXP even for that sexy Void+, I'm afraid. Reflexes it is!

Just noticed the omake about our counterpart in Crane lands and had one thought, in the event that we encounter them at some point: they should probably be a Hiruma Bushi, not a Hida Bushi. Mechanically, it just works much better; among other things, the specific "I'm a yojimbo" Alternate Path is only available to Hiruma-school characters (at Rank 3, admittedly, but still).

And it's entirely possible that we'll be seeing that character soon; given that Crane lands are literally right next to the Crab, that mission may well have been completed before we finished our journey to Dragon lands, and with Shasa's death Yasuki-sama will need a replacement yojimbo. A person traveling alone can move much faster than our caravan did, whether by land or sea.

Shasa's death... just out of curiosity, is there any way we could have prevented it? In fact, I wouldn't mind a retrospective on the arc as a whole, just to see what the roads not taken were and if there was anything that surprised @Winged Knight, whether for good or ill.

[x] Patience Samurai-san!

Void is really important. We're also approaching the part of the mission where being able to hit things harder with a club are less important.

You know, having the GM perspective on the arc would be very interesting. From the stories I've heard, it always looks different from the other side of the fence.

My thoughts on this arc?

Well... That's an interesting question to ask, really. I'll be frank, for this Quest I've mostly operated off an outline and left myself enough flexibility to respond to whatever the players want to do. I really try to ensure that autonomy is mostly kept, and railroad as little as possible. Certain things were always going to happen, of course, but how you went about handling them was always up to you.

For instance, Shasa was always Tainted. That was part of the idea of her at creation, and I was only ever going to do the barest tweaks to Zechstein's character. I felt it would have been rude to him not to give his effort in building her the respect it deserves. However, how exactly this interacted with the Quest was always something that was going to be determined by Sosuke's actions.

You all decided to help her and pretty much go out of your way to be a good person, righting wrongs and in general being a pretty damn stellar example of Bushido. This had a strong impact on her, and her opinion of Sosuke changed from thinking him a dumb Bushi content to serve and die to a person who strongly believes he is doing the world a service through his dedication. It also showed her that perhaps in performing that service one could achieve happiness, because Sosuke always seemed content with his life. So things Shasa had believed foolish began to look far more enticing to her than they did before, changing her outlook.

Now, if you hadn't done this, then Shasa's Taint likely would have still been revealed later. It just probably would have been in Dragon Lands, because she had finally begun failing her secret resistance Rolls and was showing some symptoms. Which, uh... would have not been an easy thing for you to deal with. Also, Sosuke could have convinced Shasa not to sacrifice herself if he'd rolled high enough. But, considering just how broken Shasa was at the end, this would have been a difficult roll.

Similarly, Sosuke's little incident with the fire was always something that could have happened should the circumstances line up. Namely, if his back was placed to a wall but he decided that even if things were hopeless he would fight on anyway. It's just that never happened till about this point, so this is when it occurred. If the Hachi fight had gone especially poorly, it might have even happened then.

So, yeah, for the most part I've allowed y'all the reins on where this winding story is going. Outside of a basic outline I really just consider myself the engine that writes the story everyone seems to want. The characters have surprised me before, and I'll admit I was not expecting people to want to play a Crab Bushi who really seems to want to live up to the tenants of Bushido. The Crab have always been one of the more practical Clans, thinking Bushido a great ideal but sadly something they can't afford to truly adhere to at all times just out of necessity. But you all really seem to want Sosuke to stick to it as much as he can, and that creates an interesting character considering both his goals and origins.

So I guess, ultimately, I've been just about as surprised and on the edge of my seat as the rest of you. This Quest is a treat to write and its in large part because of you, my players. I cannot thank you all enough for that. Thanks to you, this winding journey has been great fun.

I guess this was pretty much the best way for Shasa to go out TBH. Denying the enemy foothold while saving her friends. Rather than being found out as tainted later on.

See if we were on the Wall I think we'd be playing Souske very differently tbh. As it stands, we have a chance to really uphold the tenants of Bushido as we wander across the length of Rokugan.

Well, I wouldn't say Sosuke has had the opportunity just because he's outside of Crab territory. After all, he once gave up some of his Jade, an incredibly precious resource, to aid the spirit of a dead peasant who was being tormented by a Kansen. All while he was actually within the Shadowlands.

So he's certainly appeared to have leaned toward honorable actions even while in the most dangerous of regions. And remember, you all voted for that. So I think there's been a desire to go the honorable route from the playerbase for a while now. Which has, to tell the truth, been kind of fun to experience with this character.

Personally my opinion of the Crab has always been strive to honorable when possible but realize that sometimes it is either not possible or better for the greater good to not take the honorable route.

Hello everyone! The Quest shall resume this week. Maybe today, maybe Wednesday. It depends, since I didn't get a lot of sleep last night and had to wake up fairly early. The joys of working 40 hours a week, eh? Still getting used to it.

But before we begin the next arc, I need someone to run a vote count. The Voting Program Firn made hasn't worked for me since I upgraded to a new laptop, so if someone could count up everything and post it here that would be swell.

Much thanks to all my players! I look forward to continuing this story with you in "The Price of Jade."

I think that we haven't yet had a case where the demands of bushido and the demands of being a decent person were so diametrically opposed as to make it impossible to satisfy both.

Or, for that matter, where different tenets of Bushido were in conflict. The chanciest situation we've faced, I think, was with the drunk samurai in Lion lands, and we were able to prevent that from completely exploding in our faces.

I expect this to become more difficult as we gain more responsibilities and more influence.

The more honor/glory you have, the more difficult is to gain honor/glory and the easier is to lose them.

Such is the mechanics of L5R.

And we're back! Sorry for the delay. My work schedule has changed quite a lot over the last several weeks, and I've also gotten increased hours. I'm employed full time now, which has also shifted my sleeping schedule quite a bit. I'm still getting used to it, honestly, so that might impede my ability to write. I apologize for that, and will do my level best to update at least four times a week. We'll see if I can manganese hold to that.

But enough about that. For now, the game must go on.

[x] Faster, Stronger, Better, Harder

You float in blackness, numb to everything around you. Nothing can hurt you here, for nothing exists save yourself. Memory is but a few fragmented wisps, bare slivers creating the only thing that separates you from the emptiness. You've no idea how long you have been within that darkness. Ultimately, it does not matter.

Eyes form out in the nothingness, glowing red. They are gigantic, easily larger than yourself and illuminating a long, sinuous shape that goes out into the dark before melding with it. But aside from tilting your head to look, you give no response. After all, how could this be important? As long as nothing matters, you can avoid being hurt.

Something massive reaches for you, though you cannot see it very well. It is the same color as the tenebrous gloom that makes up this place. But you think it might be a claw, though far larger than any you can dredge from your foggy memory.

The claw comes within feet of you, about to make contact, when fire erupts around your form. Your eyes widen as the flames encircle you, and your memory begins to solidify. It is hazy as of yet… But you can grasp your name. You are Hiruma Sosuke, of the Crab Clan.

The reaching appendage recoils at the sudden heat and light, and the eyes vanish. So, too, does the serpentine shape that rested behind them. You are left alone now, with nothing but this strange fire to give you thought and form against the nothingness you've found yourself in.

"How very interesting," a deep, oily voice says from the darkness. "So this is what has become of you? My oh my."

A figure steps into view, clad in fine ebon robes with a gray trim. He has long black hair, but his features are oddly indistinct. It's not that he is ugly, but it's also that he is not particularly good looking either. His face is rather plain. In truth, there's really nothing recognizable about this man at all.

Save for the eyes… Those, at least, seem to glow with a crimson light. The same light you saw just moments ago.

"If only I could observe you for a little longer," the man says, cocking his head as if noting something. "But for now… Ah, our time together is already ending." He smiles. "I'll see you again."

This strange place fades, and you feel yourself being pulled elsewhere. You do not fight the sensation. Now that awareness has begun to return to you, you find this place strange and disturbing.

Best to be gone.

o\O/o
You awaken to a dull ache that seems to cover your entire body, and a deep weariness that goes down to your bones. Your eyes are heavy as you open them, and you can see from the gathering light that it is morning. That is your first indication that you are no longer in the cave, the second being that you are resting in a bed.

The cave…

Memory comes back in a flash, and you almost gasp for breath at how sudden it hits you. The cave, the Maho-tsukai, the Oni… As well as the strange fire that almost consumed you as you fought the enemies of all who live.

Finally, your thoughts turn to Shasa, who sacrificed herself for your sake. She was your friend, and perhaps she was becoming something even more precious than that… But you'll never know now. Shasa is dead. She died for you.

You blink your eyes as tears fall down your cheeks. You put forth only a token effort to restrain them. No one is here to observe your weeping, to bring shame to your grief. You are alone. And, in that solitude, you can let down your guard for at least a little while.

Shasa deserves that much.

Almost an hour later you have composed yourself, sitting up and leaning against the wall next to your bed. Your chest and limbs are covered in bandages, and you feel exhausted. Hunger and thirst also gnaw at you, and you are pleasantly surprised to see a cup of water resting nearby. You take a shallow sip, moistening cracked lips and a dry throat. It is painful at first, but soon enough relief comes.

You are half way through the cup when the door opens. You attempt to bow as Yasuki Goro walks in, but the motion makes you wince in pain. Your superior raises a hand as you try again, forestalling your efforts.

"No need for ceremony now, Sosuke-san," the courtier says. "Not in your condition. It'll be another day or two before you're ready for that."

"How long…" you ask, your voice raspy despite the water you drank. "How long was I unconscious?"

"Three days," Yasuki Goro replies before sitting down in a nearby chair. "During which I have had the people of this village take care of you and treat your wounds."

"Three days?" you ask, bewildered. You raise a hand to your head, suddenly dizzy. "I was… How did I get out of the cave?"

"The ogre brought you out," your superior says with distaste. His lips draw into a firm line. "Both you and Shirou, along with the child and Shasa-san's armor and weapons. I have questioned him on what happened, though the creature is tight lipped on the matter. Shirou was more forthcoming, but his memory is addled from a blow he took." He leaned forward. "I was hoping you might be able to explain better what went on inside that cavern, Sosuke-san, and why Shasa-san is dead."

Uhh. Do we really want to out Shasa as a Maho? Because that is going to shame the shit out of her entire family, like they will disown her posthumously.

-[x] Leave out the fact that Shasa was a Maho. She bravely died closing the rift to Jigouku.

Shasa deserves to be remembered as a hero, but fwiw she pretty much redeemed her condition as a maho taukai when she gave her life.
