Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

I don't think brash doesn't trigger here. We're not frightened nor threathened. If the ogre wanted to attack us, he would already did so.

Yep. That was the feel I was looking for. Implied threat, but not directly accusatory. It's that "I am never going to be your friend, but I'm also not your enemy... yet."

You scowl at the direction of the ogre. That was mockery, though from the creature's tone it was not intentional. It's really the only thing keeping you from just charging in there just from the monster's words. Your aggravation, however, is hardly lessened by this fact.

You have lost the benefit of surprise. There is no avoiding this truth. You've no way to scout out the area and get a good look at your target without its knowledge. It is disappointing, but bemoaning these events is a waste of time. Attempting further stealth is a fool's errand at this point, and frankly you're almost entirely certain you'd just embarrass yourself by creating more noise.

No, the time for subtlety has ended. You are left with but one option.

You step into the clearing, your tetsubo clearly drawn and held ready. Shasa and Shirou take up positions on either side of you, also ready to fight. You do not enter fully, though, instead holding your position but a few steps into the fire's light. You'll not give up any advantage when dealing with a potential threat, and more space means more time to react should things come to a fight.

The ogre is a looming giant before the fire, impressively tall even while sitting upon a fallen log. It is garbed in an oversized set of armor, though it only covers the creature's chest. The ogre's bulk almost seems ready to explode out from this covering. Its large, muscled arms are bare, and its lower torso is covered in animal skins that wrap around the ogre's waist and go down to its knees.

A large sword rests across its legs, easily six feet long. It is single edged and curved, and a simple wooden sheath rests nearby. A smooth stone, and a vile of what looks like oil. Both objects look almost comically tiny compared to the ogre's giant hands.

"I am Hiruma Sosuke, of the Crab," you say, keeping your voice as neutral as you can make it. "We have come seeking the child stealer, and I have questions for you, ogre."

"A Crab… And so far north," the ogre says, interest clear in its tone. It looks at your tetsubo and smiles. The expression does disturbing things to the monster's teeth. "Such a warm response to my welcome, Samurai. You certainly know how to show hospitality."

"I am not here to bandy small talk with you, ogre," you respond, eyes narrowing. "There are things I need to know."

"Like whether or not I am the one stealing the children from that little village?" the ogre asks. "That is why you are bothering me, yes? Come, Samurai. We both know I am not the one responsible."

"And how do we know this?" you ask. "Convince me."

"Look at me, Crab," the ogre responds, motioning at itself. "I am not a creature of stealth. When I do something, it is up front and with strength. To stoop so low as to sneak about like some thief?" It grimaces. "Phaw! It is unseemly."

"Then what are you doing here," you demand. "And why have you crafted that sword? Speak quickly, ogre, for my patience has limits."

"I am here because I travel free," the ogre responds. It hefts the sword up with surprising gentleness, the blade reflecting the firelight. "And I crafted this sword to kill the true enemy you should be hunting."

[ ] "For somebody doing things "up front and with strength" you play with words too much. Who is this enemy and where I can find it?"

I can see where this one is going. I just... I mean, I know we're a Crab Bushi of the Hida school, but...

Do we really want to be in the position of complaining that an *ogre* is being too subtle and talky for us?

He is not too subtle and talky for us, he is too subtle and talky for self-proclaimed "Up front" guy... "I'm made this sword to kill one who steal children... no, I wouldn't tell who that is but will play with words instead."

...

Also, how the fuck I misssed this mistake... "Up gront", ghhh...

As the QM of said quest, I'll expand a little. We're playing as Usagi the Ronin last scion of the Hare clan as she tries to avenge her clan, live in a world that only tolerates her existence, and deal with the fact that people try to kill her with some regularity, If you look in my sig there is a story only archive that covers all story posts and has an up to date sheet.

And as a slight example of my writing, and thank you omake to Winged Knight for advertising, here is my take on what our counter part yojimbo Hiruma Miyako is up to in the Crane lands:

Miyako listens to the sounds of the crane flapping across the sky.
She feels the loose gravel beneath her feet digging into her sandals.
She smells the fragrant cherry blossoms wafting over the dueling circle.
She tastes the burning hot tension in the air.
She sees her opponent, the fair white haired Kakita.

A distant part of her, the part that still thinks, notes that Kakita Torano is an accomplished duelist, having won four duels since his gempukku, once at each Winter Court in the lands of the Crane.

The rest of her lets go and the world changes between the two duelists as their spirits vye against each other for supremacy.

Torano's spirit surges forward with the crystal cold intensity of the Crane. It is elegant, it is beautiful it is unrestrained violence distilled into a single moment.

Miyako's spirit roars in defiance, there is no surging forward for her spirit. It is a harsh brutal thing of simple unrefined rebellion. It is the soul of the Crab, who refuses to die when all the horrors of the world press against her.

The wings above them flap again. Torano looks at Miyako and sighs.

"I concede the match." he says in soft tones.

Miyako blinks, whatever it was she was expecting it was not that.

"Kakita-sama?" she presses.

True she had drawn on the strength of spirit that came from understanding. Yet Torano's spirit, hadn't been defeated....

Torano smiles slightly.
"Your spirit is strong Hiruma-sama, it defeated mine, the match was yours when you did not break."

Miyako nods, satisfied.
"The Crab do not break."

"As I see with my own eyes. You are a fine opponent, and I hope we can duel again" Torano says.

"We shall see Kakita-sama, it depends on my lord's success."

Torano looks towards the castle tower and nods.
"Then a week from today at the hour of the rooster?"

Miyako thinks about how the negotiations are going, of the endless days where nothing happened, yes she would be here at least a week more.

"I would be delighted Kakita-sama." she says with a bow.

Torano bows back.
"Very well then, Fortunes guide you."

The elegant Kakita walks out of the dueling circle, and if Miyako notes that he looks rather attractive in that light blue kimono, well, it was not a crime to admire beauty in the Crane lands, now was it?

Thanks for the snippet, Gman! I'm just gonna add it to the official omake list. Glad to have more on there, since it's quite short.
