Aw, come on people really? No speed research? at all? Well, I hope it works out, but I am very worried our first designs will be viewed as insufficient.

@Oshha is not such a terrible QM that he would start off by giving us five options of which only one was acceptable.

Deeming our designs insufficient is especially premature given that we haven't even reached the design phase yet.

See I get that, but we don't know what the other designers are going to do, and I'm assuming with multiple different backers possible, each has their own design team going on. Which if so, means someone else is designing super-humans, and at least one of them is likely to pick speed, and I worry they'll end up wrecking us because of it. Though, we do have quite some time before we run out of money, so we've got time.

What other designers? I have never hinted or implied such a thing.

Again, if Speed was an instant win-button, it wouldn't have been put on the same level as the others. We don't even know what Super-Speed entails at this point!

Maybe picking the speed research only means that the supersoldiers will run 0.1& faster, and any meaningul effects only come after investing thousands of Research points. Maybe the speed stat only affects running speed, and any other variables are only unlocked later. We don't know yet, it is only turn 1!

Goodness, I was the maker of the leading Speed plan, and even I think you're overselling it. Though I'll admit I am surprised we voted for enhanced senses before speed. It's the one I prefered of the two so I'm happy, but I didn't expect it.

Eh, was a guess, based on the various other design quests on here where you compete against other designers.

I can assure that there are not. You are the only Imperial Department doing this sort of thing and it is a new unproven venture so before too many resources will be committed to this sort of thing, you will need to prove your worth first.

Year I
[X][Research] Boosted Toughness (Biology)
[X][Research] Sharpen Vison (Biology)
[X][Research] Heldyna IV Artefact (Precusor)

The first year goes well enough. You have a free hand at this point as you are new enough and unproven enough to avoid any real oversight. That will change in the future as you prove your worth and more attention will be sent your way.

For now, you just needed a starting point and that you did. Increased toughness and better senses are what you go for. Toughness is always useful whether they are soldiers or workers while vison will allow them to have better eyesight and spotting ability in addition to opening up new avenues of research.

As you expect, both of those initial projects go swimmingly, completed ahead of schedule and without using up all of their assigned budget. The result is not only due to get a pair of new gene-mods to use in the future, but the research teams have been able to progress into future areas of both fields of research.

Unfortunately, not all news is good this year. You decided to get started on the Heldyna IV Artefact as who knows what secrets it could hold. Well, you got an idea of what secrets it holds, but that knowledge was gained in one of the worst ways possible.

***

"And it killed half the team?" you repeat, just to make sure you got this right.

"Effectively so Director," replies the woman, "The field engulfed half the complex. All organic matter caught in it was aged to dust while non-organic matter is apparently unaffected, but further testing and research will be required to confirm that."

"How quickly can we recover from this?" you ask, staring at the data appearing in your AR-HUD.

"Quick enough," answers your assistant, "The structures are intact and we can hire replacement easily enough. And while we kept footage and existing notes, the main setback at the moment is all of the data that we have lost as whatever knowledge or insights that the dead scientist had yet to write down have been lost to us. Furthermore, the replacements will need to look through what has already been discovered and otherwise get up to speed with the project."

"Well, it wasn't too serious despite the loss of life," you muse, ignoring the thoughts of if you would still think that if you were still a low ranking scientist like you used to be, "We got some progress down and idea of what the artefact does."

So design actions are pretty simple. Write-in the name of the project and write-in which unlocked mods you want to add to the geneline. There will eventually be a limit to how many mods you can add into a geneline, but I want start including the limit until you begin to approach it.

You also get extra funding from producing genelines and the more useful the geneline, the more funding you get from it.

Ah, so we got a nat1 on the Artifact research... Is it bad if I'm kinda happy that's the one we crit-failed on? The other two would've been really annoying to fail like that, even if it would be objectively better.

[X] [Research] Increased Speed (Biology)
Speed was a factor that a lot of people would want, and is a very important part of my dinosaur soldier plan!

[X] [Research] Increased Hearing (Biology)
Hearing is a great sense, especially since it is almost impossible for enemy combatants to completely ignore.
Also because we don't have "Enhanced Sense of Touch" unlocked, meaning that this is the most likely route towards tremoursense (which is what technically what snakes use for hearing).

[X] [Research] Heldyna IV Artefact (Precusor)
75% chance of success this time, let's go!

[X] [Design] Project Eagle Turtle Mk. 1
-[X] [Design] Basic Toughness Enhancement I
-[X] [Design] Basic Enhanced Vision I

At this point, we only have slightly tougher and slightly better seeing humans. That's not something deserving of neither the name of Eagle nor Turtle! We have to let the public know that this is not an acceptable stopping point!
The Mk. 1 part is pure advertisement, the actual name is Mk. 0.1

Can we see the rolls in the update?

[X] [Research] Enhanced Immune System (Biology)
[X] [Research] Increased Healing Factor (Biology)
[X] [Research] Neural Interface (Cybernetics)

[X] [Design] Project Eagle Turtle
-[X] [Design] Basic Toughness Enhancement I
-[X] [Design] Basic Enhanced Vision I

So my reasoning is 1st lets make them resistant to disease, 2nd lets get them to heal faster so they are more likely to recover from wounds which saves money on having to breed and train new soldiers and finally neural interface since that would give them better access to tech, more importantly using military tech more effectively making them a better soldier.

It would be nice to know how the rolls went that made this result.
We rolled a D20+2 for each roll, with excess successes going into the next unlock at a 2:1 rate.

This tells us that we rolled a natural 1 on the Artifact, which also fits with the "giant explosion" narratives.

Boosted Toughness costed 5 and currently has 4 Progress, meaning we rolled ~11 (possibly plus/minus one depending on how rounding works in-quest).
Similarly Boosted Eyesight has a Progress of 2 leading to a roll of ~9.
