Getting your bearings
[X] Sit down review everything you had access to and attempt to find out which timeline you woke up in, the original anime, manga, Rebuild or a possible fusion of all them.
You tear through the house and after reading through calendars, journals and what passes for the internet in this world you come to a general understanding of your larger situation.
The year is 2004.
You appear to be in the continuity of the original anime.
Specifically Yui Ikari is recently dead and the man your now replacing/are has falsely aligned with the instrumentality project while secretly planning to use them to get his wife back.
The creation of the first 'Rei Ayanami' is still in it's early stages.
And yesterday Shinji Ikari was sent away to live with a paid tutor.
You contemplate your current situation and exactly how un-ideal it truly is, Evangelion isn't a series known for being a particularly nice world to live in and even being in a position of power things have the possibility to go royally wrong for you.
You take a deep breath and focus.
"Mission 1: try to both survive and make things marginally better for as many people as possible"
You cross your arms and nod to yourself...
Before letting yourself fall backwards onto the bed with a defeated chuckle
"Easier said than done..."
You shake yourself off and proceed to take things one at a time for now.
First objective? Head to NERV HQ cause in all your frenzied information gathering and thinking you've gone and made yourself late to work.

Beginning in earnest

"I apologize Deputy Commander, I was busy with some...personal research. On a related note I'd like to speak with you privately later."
He gives you a measured look and nod that has you hopeful he got your intentions.
"Very well then, but I do hope you've not been so caught up in personal matters as to forget you have a meeting with Dr Akagi in 5 minutes in regards to the current plans and designs for project MAGI."
With that he walks away.
You take a deep breath after entering the office and remember what you decided earlier in the morning.
"Gotta take this one step at a time..."

The meeting with the senior Akagi was surprisingly boring.
Most of what she's saying probably would make more sense to the true Gendo Ikari who'd had years to learn all the terminology of how things work.
But for you? Classic sci-fi technobabble.
Still you try your best to maintain the illusion of understanding till she came to a part which actually stood out to you
"As well we are currently considering reducing the number of Magi computers for the main system down to three"
"Wait, what's the current planned number?" You blurt out the question in what you hope isn't too much of a un-Gendo like manner.
She blinks in surprise before responding "I'd hope you'd remember, the initial plan was five, however you've been saying you wish to speed up the construction when it begins so doing two less seems ideal. So should we move forward with the downsizing? It will theoretically result in a slightly less powerful magi system overall but will speed up the eventual construction by a few years at least."
You take in her words and think. So, the Magi was originally meant to be five but Gendo insisted in having it's creation speeded up. Something to do with the scenerio? Whatever the case your in the driver's seat now and this is your call.

You walk through a a certain room within the lower levels of NERV HQ to where you know from your morning research she should be.
She being a certain iconic blue haird anime girl who is both real in this universe and lacks hair at this stage of development.
Before you sits on a table what could be generously be described as a large fish tank. Within it is a number of Embryos floating in LCL. Generally less impressive than what you remember from the series but you suppose there was plenty of time for a upgrade to have taken place.
You watch for a short time in morbid fascination as they float around before going to a nearby computer console and logging in to check through what you can.

She touches your hand and leans her face close to yours.
"In my experience the best thing to help move forward is to find something new..."

"I-I'm Doctor but I'm just not ready for this type of relationship so soon after losing my wife." You say with carefully faked vulnerability.
"And even if it wasn't, no offense but I just don't personally see such a relationship between you and I as viable..."
Naoko goes earily silent for a second and your breifly worried you did something wrong and set her off earlier than canon. But eventually she simply shakes her head and replies "Of course sir, my apologies I don't know what I was thinking. Have a good day."
She's giving a smile but her voice is melancholy as she leaves your office. Still better She's dejected at a kind rejection now then snaps at a much less pleasant revelation later.

Fuyutsuki let's out a strangled gasp and had a surprised look that assured you that you were right on the money about what Gendo should and shouldn't know at this point before continuing
"In one year the daughter of German division scientist Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, Asuka Langley Soryu will be selected to pilot Evs unit 02 after it's completion and own contact experiment involving her mother which unlike Yui would leave her alive but with her mind irreparably damaged and lead her to eventually commit suicide with her daughter finding the body. That same year Dr Akagi's own daughter Ritsuko will meet and befriend Misato Katsuragi in college. Miss Katsuragi will then enter a relationship with a man named Ryoji Kaji who she will a year later break up with."
You say all of this with as calm a voice and straight a face as possible while looking the man before you in the eyes.
Eventually Fuyutsuki manages to fight through his shock and confusion to ask "And you know all this how?"
You begin circling around the room and the Deputy Commander specifically while continuing to speak
"Doctor, imagine if you will, our whole world as a work of fiction, a story made for the viewing of others. That every person you know, Love or hate. In one reality simply don't exist as real along with yourself. Now imagine that you only ever experienced this world by watching this story, that you are not truly Kozo Fuyutsuki but awoke one morning in the body of the man with that name with almost no memories of your own but one of that story you watched."
As you finish you make one last circle around him before stopping and looking him in the eyes again.
The older man is pale as a ghost
"You...are not Gendo Ikari"
You simply nod and allow him to continue.
"You are a separate person who somehow awoke in his body with no memories other than experiencing his and by extension my life as a work of fiction."
You nod again
"You relize this all sounds like the definition of insane?"
"Yes"
"And that I could possibly use this to have you stripped of your rank even temporarily as being unfit to perform your duties due to what could only be assumed to be a grief induced mental break?"
"That you most certainly could. But I don't think you will."
"Because you've already said things that mad as they sound you could only know in such detail if you truly had such omniscient knowledge?"
"Indeed. Let's not beat around the bush, I know you did not particularly like the original Gendo Ikari, however I have no interest in dealing with a love Triangle where two of the points are currently trapped within a giant cyborg creature she herself made or currently bodyjacked respectively. I'm for all pretense a stranger to you...but I'm also a potential ally that could save you and many others from incredible tragedy. I won't pressure you into a decision immediately thought. We can talk more in the morning." And with that you leave Fuyutsuki alone in the room.

"So let's begin at the basics. In the story you witnessed before coming here what happens next?"
"Ah, that's where things get complicated..."
He raises a eyebrow "How so?"
"You see, we aren't at the story proper yet. The right now we're experiencing is in the original narrative but Backstory to be referenced and flashed back to. Functionaly I'muncertain of a number of specifics"
"Ah, I see. So in that case when does the main plot of our little work begin and who pray tell is our dashing main hero, because I simply can't see myself in such a role and even regardless of my personal feelings on him I honestly have a hard time believing it to be Gendo"
"The canonical events of our tales main body are not do to start for 11 years and they will be following Shinji."
"Hmm, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised"
"Still, for now we need to focus on our present. Alot happens in the Backstory to make the characters and world who and what they are. I've already got a handle on Shinji so we should look to the other points of divergence we can cause."

"I'm sorry but no. You see Shinji your father is in charge of some very important work that would leave very little time to look after you, hence why your with your sensei. I promise though that I'll call you and visit whenever possible."
"R-really? You promise?" Somewhere along the line he'd started sniffling.
"Yes, I love you Shinji, goodnight"
"I-I love you too dad. Goodnight!"
After telling him to put the tutor back on you promptly inform him that he is to enroll Shinji in a public school to socialize while continuing the tutoring on the side as academic support.

"This is a unfortunate situation. I'm soon enough in the timeline of events that it hasn't happened yet but too late to truly have the time and resources to realistically stop it in a ideal manner."

You get up and begin to pace
"We have a moral obligation to at least put the bare minimum resources to the task but we must plan for the worst while hoping for the best. The time it would likely take for such a undertaking of research to be successful would force us to move back the contact experiment which could result in 02's pilot being under-trained and/or-"
"SEELE getting suspicious."
You stop at the other end of the room and cross your arms "Indeed. In the likely event the contact experiment happens we should sabotage it so that Dr Soryu is fully absorbed."
"Considering you said she took her own life in the original series of events I take it you mean this as some sort of mercy killing?"
"That and for the sake of her daughter. Little Asuka not only found her mother after her suicide she also had to deal with her own mother being so psychologically damaged she couldn't recognize her own daughter. This combined with her father flagrantly cheating with another woman inside the hospital his wife was staying in within Asuka'a hearing range."
"Dear lord"
"Heh, this series is infamous for many things. One was how it seemed like every character needed therapy and none of them seemed to get it. Oh and before I forget have NERV hire a on site therapist."
"I'll make a not of it. So, anything else in the somewhat immediate future?"
"That depends" You say turning around to look him in eyes with a straight face "how willing are you to play cupid for a couple of college students?"

"Because one half of tge relationship could go on to be a Captain turned Major working under us and the other will go on to be at the very least a double agent with ties to us, the U.N and intent on looking into SEELE.".
Fuyutsuki face palms "Fine we'll see what we can do about that. Now anything else?"
At the moment that's it for my side of things. Now it's your turn."

"As we've already established I only have memories and knowledge of the series itself. In this world I have nothing else and will need information, hence where you come in, our relationship will be give and take in a way. I provide information and context to potential future events, you will give me what information I lack so we can form more comprehensive plans."
Fuyutsuki nods. "Very well. What would you like to know?"

Fuyutsuki sighs and lightly shakes his head "Well as the rather recently all things considered head of the relatively new NERV your equal parts manager and middle man for SEELE. New research or projects are largely on you to green-light and if it's important enough you're the one who will give the major thumbs up or down on changes to it. Your also the one who has to draw up the plans for distribution of the larger budget as well as partially responsible for securing said budget through our funding."
You nod along before asking "What of our current co-workers? Anyone of note? I'm already familiar with Naoko."
"Hmm, well of note there is Doctor Fubuki, she's a both diligent and brilliant young woman but she isn't around often as she's taken to bouncing around divisions on different projects."
"I see, anybody you think would be suitable to bring into this little benevolent conspiracy of ours?"

They can't keep track of the entirety of NERV all the time but they have an uncanny way of getting their hands of information and recordings that still requires caution."
