GAMERGIRL: Morbid Misadventures of a Digital Kind

Honestly, I'm sort of glad we got the total mental breakdown out of the way sooner, rather than later. It was bound to happen. At least this is relatively safe.

We have more than one dog?????

Dogs run in packs!

Also, no way am I letting that @LordSquishy character hog all the treats my thunder.

Hmmm, as for questions...

[X] What does Spooky want?
[X] Who are the other major beings here?
[X] What do they want?

I think these gives us more of an idea of the lie of the land than asking questions like where are we, or other stuff we can kind of infer already.

For the questions...Here's the list I'm thinking
1.How does moving around work?
2.What factions are there out here in digital land?
3.Do you guys have problems with Avatars ending up with spare fragments that drive them nuts? We're honestly probably constantly pushing North half-way to deletion like all the time, it seems.
4.Do you have any consistent work for someone like North to deal with? This might be a bit much to ask given unfortunately we ended up with a keyboard warrior (Blame Spooky for that one, literally, Man needs directing to some sensitivity courses... And maybe give us the links, we could use some help here ourselves!)

But maybe someone else has ideas?

More specifically, as Skippy noted, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Better to happen in a relatively controlled environment.

Thinking about it, since Sofya is taking the courtesy of speaking to us, and also seems to be friendlier (if a bit excitable) than Spooks, and a potential ally, we should probably do her the courtesy of asking her about herself.

So my questions would be:

[X] Could you tell us a little about yourself?
[X] What does Spooky want?
[X] Who are the other major beings here?
[X] What do they want?

Leaving one free.

3.Do you guys have problems with Avatars ending up with spare fragments that drive them nuts? We're honestly probably constantly pushing North half-way to deletion like all the time, it seems.

I think we've helped more than we've hurt, so far. We probably outright saved her during the battle with the Coconutters. And whilst the last stuff we told her was painful, a lot of it was something she needed to hear, probably sooner rather than later. If she had mentioned in front of Spooky that she was planning to contact her family, or asked him how, the results could have been unpleasant.

Right now North - and by extension us as well- are in the equivalent of a boat in the middle of the Pacific, or in the jungle. It's a bad situation. The only way you get out of a situation like that is with willpower and planning, and by realising the seriousness of your situation.

Plus, we're still working this out too, just like she is. We can get better with time.

I am the first to call us out for being a bunch of incompetents, but even I think this wasn't on us. Really, North came up with the "call family" bit entirely on her own, and as I semi-correctly predicted calling your living relatives isn't a Thing, otherwise it seems likely to have come up in the past.

Which raises the question why these buffoons didn't account for this reasonably obvious scenario even a little.

One question I thus want to ask but not really is: What is this? Fucking amateur hour?

Preventing discovery and shutdown of the system is part of the organisations goal. An avatar that can not let go of their past life is a liability that needs to be disposed off.

Something along those lines is certainly reasonable, although we shouldn't get too carried away. But I think @EternalStruggle's point was more that they don't seem to have predicted that Julie would be upset, or scared, even though it's a pretty natural response.

As for that... neither Spooky or Sofya seem like they would have an entirely easy time predicting normal human reactions. With Spooky that makes sense, as he was (supposedly) never human to begin with, and seems kind of unempathetic. With Sofya, maybe... she's not quite all there, so to speak? I kind of get that impression.

Spooky seemed somewhat surprised at how much of Julie had survived, compared to most survivors, which is maybe also relevant here.

I think the hint can be found here.

Of course, but if they don't prepare their subjects for it, and dispose or let die those that don't immediately just toss away the idea of contacting friends and family...

Well, that would most certainly explain the 90%+ casualties, wouldn't it?

Like I said, amateur hour.

Yeah, and he wanted data without answering questions, so...

"Beware he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart, he dreams himself your master."
-Commissioner Pravin Lal

Although that quote's a bit redundant since I'm pretty sure we already know Spooks is like that. I mean he doesn't even dream, he just thinks with his brain in daytime that he's our master.

On another note, I think at least 1 question should be to ask who is exactly in Spook's organisation, and what they're all doing.

And I'm not just asking that to fill out some details in my forms.

Honestly... I'm not that bothered? Shit happens, yo. Glad it happened now and not when we're in the middle of a battle or something.

Honestly I'm not overly bothered by how inquisitive the second part is this time, so much is that I'm not certain how much she knows. She clearly is... yeah, not the most reliable party, and I don't think we actually know where exactly she ranks in the whole hierarchy; even if she's pretty high up, given the kind of person Spooks is? I wouldn't be surprised if he kept most vital information to himself. I'm fine with it being asked ftr, not a real problem, but I think the first part is more important and am skeptical we'll get a great answer for the second.

Here's some other questions I like:

[X] Could you tell us a little about yourself?
[X] Who are the other major beings here?

I also kinda want to know what the heck just happened exactly? It's less important for the future hopefully but like... what happens exactly when somebody hits 0? What if she hadn't been able to put North in a calming space? What would have happened? I think it could tell us something about the sanity meter and potentially the nature of beings like North (and maybe us) in general.

Or maybe not lol

OOC (Not sure if necessary but putting it here anyway): Honestly, the problem I keep running into is where the divide between fragment/North conversation ends. To be more specific, I'm posting as if she's an actual person that I can have a dialogue with, both because of Cetashwayo's great characterization and because I think that's a cool conceit of the quest. But Cetashwayo can only have North say so much and respond in specific ways. So we have the "issue", for lack of a better word, where acting too concerned for North can run the risk of derailing the game and being too callous can end it outright. I get that finding that sweet spot is probably one of the most important aspects of the quest, but it'd be nice if we had some more framework of North as a character; her history, her personality, her triggers, etc. If we have a baseline of who North fully is, then we can make our responses more fitting and more involved, or at least I can. This is just my perspective, and everyone, especially Cetashwayo, is free to disagree or refine it. I just felt like as a fan of this quest, and someone who likes how it's been progressing thus far, it'd be remiss for me not to post something like this.

I didn't literally punish people for being too callous. That isn't really what happened. I just figured using quotes from people during North's descent would be dramatic :V I apologize if it gave the impression I was blaming people for causing it, lol.

I did some smaller stuff early on but I would never actually crash the game or make North too OP because you guys were too nice or too mean to her. If that was the case then you could just spam happy sentiments to her forever and she'd have 100/10 SAN.

I used quotes instead of internal thoughts because I didn't want to break the format of the quest. In that sense it was a pretty typical portrayal of a spiral downwards, with quotes from the past provoking further sliding and so on.

I didn't mean that she was literally responding at that moment to them.

Okay, that makes more sense. And honestly, this is just another sign of how strong a character North is that I'm responding in this way, and the introduction of semi-direct communication definitely makes me more invested. I do want to learn more about North's life, if only because I'm sure she has an interesting story to tell, and it'd be nice to get a look at her pre-quest craziness, but that's up to you. Just know that if I sound critical or focus on minutiae, it's because that's how your writing is connecting to me.

Sure, no problem. I appreciate the questions.

Firstly: Guys Moratorium isn't over.

It seems to me that in terms of our competence we saved her against the Coconutters, we've made some minor mistakes getting used to the situation and gathering important information, the current crisis is long term a semi-good thing because a grip on the situation is important, and we really need a better grasp on consequences more than 1.5 degrees of seperation away. (I am referring to not thinking about the consequences of discussing how horribly stuff could end when North is about to ask about contact between the digital and tangible worlds. Or something.)

My conclusion is that !!Science!! goes on pause until we have something along the lines of a home base (and fuller SAN) and negative speculation about large scale stuff (stuff like total server shutdown) should be properly bracketed in "hypothetically" statements and kept within the bounds of realism.

In more immediate terms I think that the questions should be as follows:

1: What is your background? We heard your a political refugee and your avatar is a heart with the colors of the USA and Sofya is a Russian name and you talk in #s so we're getting interested.
Learn about the Sofya, general background about connections between digital and tangible (SpookySpooks angered the FSB which is the Russia security group which seems relevant to Sofya and a important incident in general.)

2: How exactly does moving around work?
The importance of this explains itself.

3: What are the other major beings/factions and what are their interests?
This question gives the lay of the land, we know who has power and a bit more about the underpinnings of this place.

4: Continuing on from that, what does Spookie's group do besides preventing a shutdown? (And what does Lestrange do?)
Stuff about the faction we are in the grasp of.

5: What is North likely to be doing in the long term, as in what sort of job can we expect?
We need to know about long-term prospects.

I'm sure these can be improved somehow, what do you guys think?

Relevant note: If we ask about what happens when you hit 0 SAN and what exactly it entails and all that- we can likely come up with a plan for if it happens again at a more unfortunate time.

Still deciding on my exact vote.

[X] What are the other major beings/factions and what are their interests?
[X] Continuing on from that, what does Spookie's group do besides preventing a shutdown? (And what does Lestrange do?)
[X] What is your background? We heard your a political refugee and your avatar is a heart with the colors of the USA and Sofya is a Russian name and you talk in #s so we're getting interested.
[X] What happens if someone hits 0 SAN?
[X] How exactly does moving around work?

hot take: voting is good. Now to copy someone else's vote with one exception!

Honestly I crafted a vote but then realized that really it was basically the same as TAG's and that he covered basically everything I want to so

That being said, I'm actually kind of getting close to the point of abandoning outright votes anyways in favor of a more conversation based system. It might actually feel more natural to what's going in the quest. So rather than voting for the top five questions I just have Sofya answer questions in the inter-update period.

Now there's a thought...
