[X] What have they been doing to him down here? You don't call just any prisoner a 'Project'.
[X] She lost herself and started cackling madly.

"Oh, now I get it!" Koyomi said as a nigh Glaswegian grin started to cover her face. She then lost herself in a fit of uncontrollable cackling and looked Yumemi right in the eyes to ask, "So that's you wanted to show me? That every last thing I ever fought for, ever suffered for, was all for nothing? That the Dandelionhearts are gone, gone because of me even, but the Frost Fair, they get to live?"

"Koyomi, calm yourself!" Yumemi barked, a tinge of fear present behind her authoritative tone. "While we can't speak for the wider cosmos, on Earth RUNE knows for a fact that this is the last Frostfarer alive. I did not bring you here to ever make you think all our efforts were in vain-"

"How can I even trust you anymore?" Koyomi said, still grinning and cackling, "How do I have any way to know you're telling the truth, that there aren't a thousand more Frostfarers all underground somewhere? And those guns had to be some sick joke, you know full well bullets will just bounce off a Frostfarer."

"If you still won't be convinced, then past a certain point that's your problem," Yumemi said, then clamped her hand down on Koyomi's shoulder. "For starters, those guns were Cup- and Pentacle-enchanted. And thanks to Project Lazarus, what we've accomplished as Hanazakari can be more than just saving humanity. It can be making humanity better. If we can grow our own Heart Leeches, we can make trauma and other painful emotions a thing of the past, let alone if we can reverse engineer Frost Fair immortality."

"Oh, just twist the knife in further, like I even care anymore!" Koyomi said, before she slowly sank to her knees and had to bury her face. "The woman I fought alongside wants to turn all us humans into another Frost Fair, turn us into the same enemy the Dandelionhearts died protecting us from! Answer me Yumemi, what was the point of me even picking up a sword? Of saving Asahi, Tsukasa, hell even Kazuya from Heart Leeches?"

Miyako could see Kazuya tense up on hearing Koyomi say such a thing, even if he said nothing in return. All she wanted to say to Koyomi was something like 'You were, you are, a Hanazakari. Nothing you did was in vain' but she had no idea how Koyomi would even respond to that anymore.
Gazing at the cackling wreck in front of her, Miyako could only think, This- this isn't the Arisugawa-sama I know, it can't be!

"Is this what Namie died for?!" Koyomi couldn't help bursting out with.

With one line, Yumemi stopped bothering with damage control. "Don't. You. Dare…" she spat out, "use her name against me!"

"Arisugawa-san," Hachiro said on having to step in, "Project Lazarus was formulated by RUNE's High Command, Brigadier Hoshizora is not its ringmaster. If you wish to protest, you'll have to take it to the Netherlands, not out on her!"

"Well, aren't you precious?" Koyomi was reduced to giggling at him, "Whoever's the 'ringmaster', you're still just as complicit in this and whatever else RUNE has planned as she is, so quite the nice guy act!"

"If you're saying we should step down," Hachiro then said, "then think, please, what would we accomplish? If I go, if she goes even, all that will accomplish is RUNE replacing us with someone else, likely someone worse, and Project Lazarus won't be stopped."

"So do nothing? That's your solution?" Koyomi said, tears now streaking down her face. "Might as well I suppose, since RUNE's so determined to make all our efforts be for nought."

As she watched Koyomi be reduced to… this, Miyako felt the already cold air in the room drop even lower, right on the back of her neck.
<Young girl, can you hear me?> a voice like breath on a frozen morning echoed in her mind. <We- no, just I now I suppose, I not only hear you, I feel you. Shock, Fear, but above all Abandonment, I can sense the iron grip all these emotions now have on you. Please, come closer…>

Miyako did find herself moving forward, like something invisible was willing her, yet kept trembling all the while. "W-what you do want from me?" she whispered, quickly looking back to make sure the three Hanazakari hadn't heard her, "Have you been trapped here since the end of the Frost Decade? Have they… done anything to you?"

<More than you can imagine,> the Frostfarer answered. <To imagine this world, this universe, without us, that I am where everything we strove for ends. That I am King Frost by mere default. Is this what it takes to make me feel anything anymore?
Wait, young girl, I sense there are four men you feel quite strongly about. A boy in this room who could have been part of our army, a boy of your human theatre, a boy contemplating us beneath the moonlight, and
…> he went on, with Miyako wondering who the fourth could even be, her barely knowing Ryoichi or Hachiro, <a character from your Earth fiction> he vaguely concluded.

Kazuya-kun, Reiji-kun, Hayato-kun, and… well the last one could be whoever, Miyako thought on instinct. "What do you want with them?"

<Just to feel what you feel about them, about anything,> the Frostfarer replied, <for they may torture me down here, but I can no longer feel anything from even that. I am the first, and of course last, of my kind you have seen for yourself, right? Had you the power, young girl, would you have sentenced me to this same fate?>

"I am sick and tired of your little Yoshitsune complex!" Yumemi snapped at Koyomi, their argument of course still going with Yumemi cutting through Hachiro's good cop attempt, "Acting like you're the one persecuted by the big, bad government for doing what you delude yourself into thinking is right! Why else would you take your penname for the mountain he was taught under?"

<You see her, reduced to Hate? When you are like us, Hate and Love are emotions all the same, the strength is all that matters. But you feel different don't you, young girl? If you can still Love when surrounded by Hate, then it must be stronger than any other emotion,> the Frostfarer mused.

Miyako now found she'd walked right up to the railing and was staring straight up at the Frostfarer. She heard Kazuya gasped from far behind and realised too late it was from being all too familiar.
One of the Frostfarer's Heart Leeches shot out of his skin, right from where his 'heart' would be. Miyako shrieked like in Hell as it latched on with its icicle fangs over her own heart, then began to burrow deeper. Everything she felt for Kazuya, Reiji, Hayato, Asahi, and Koyomi grew fainter and fainter, replaced with only the cold.

Her emotions draining back into him, the Frostfarer then broke his chains and landed in front of her. "It wasn't that I lacked the strength to shatter them, it was the willpower I need. I thank you, young girl," he said, and indeed said, evolving beyond speaking through thoughts.
With the light glimmering off his ice crystal self, he then wrapped himself in illusion to appear far more humanoid. His hair was now blue like Kazuya's if glossier, tied in a ponytail longer than Reiji's, and an expression as serene as Hayato's. Like on the ring however, he was still clad in mostly a pair of tight black trousers.

Koyomi was snapped out of her mania by seeing Miyako becoming a Frost Pawn right before her. Calling out "Henshin!", she rushed forward and hacked that Heart Leech in two.
Miyako collapsed, feeling more freezing than ever, her stolen emotions still not back but her desperately wanting them.

Trying not to have any possible reaction to… what had just happened, Yumemi in turn proclaimed "The world sleeps, the mind wakes. Blossom, White Egret!"

"Heed your master's call," Hachiro wasted no time in saying, even as his face showed less confidence, "Blossom, Cornus!" He now wore a uniform edged with a stark pink, epaulettes that looked like Cerberus heads, and bones on the outside of his clothes to match his Bone Wand.

"Ah, all your Hanazakari names? Hmhm, I think I shall do likewise; aliases are all we Frostfarers have. Red Spider Lily? No, that is taken. Oh, I know," the Frostfarer said as he concentrated the cold towards the wound Koyomi had left on Miyako when she tore out the Heart Leech. A flower made of ice was conjured there, Miyako reeling in worse pain than if it'd been simply salted.
"Call me Blue Lotus," the Frostfarer finished with a smile. He then spread his arms and said, "Well, go on. I sense you three strongly desire to prove you are heroes, so take your best shot. Be the ones who inspired this little girl, just like old times."

this last chapter was spicy aaa hell.

its not the smart thing for koyomi to do, but anything other than some variation of "[]KILL KILL KILL" feels out of sync with her previously established behaviour.

she almost killed that boy over her hate of these things.

Funny.
I once read a sci-fi novel about what a terrible idea that was.

I imagine there'd be quite a few of them out there.

Hachiro is a romance option ? He's married.

B.L. identified Hachiro as someone Miyako has strong feelings about. Not necessarily romantic, definitely not necessarily reciprocated. Those almost certainly aren't part of the equation, since one of the dudes in question is fictional.

Basically this, since he's not only another Hanazakari, and the least aggressive of the three Miyako knows, but a trans one too. But yeah, on top of being married, there's also a pretty massive age gap too, Hachiro being roughly Koyomi's and Yumemi's age.

Also, I'm surprised to see people warming (pun... intended) to Blue Lotus, given he sicced a Heart Leech on Miyako and then put ice in her wound, and not in the ice pack way.

As for who the fourth, fictional boy is, I won't straight up say, but for a hint think back on the books that've been mentioned by name in this Quest

Okay, let me amend my statement. I don't see him sticking around as a member of Miyako's harem. :V
I had not considered that possibility for either the short term or the long term. Fascinating, though.

It's cool to see one of the Frost Fair alive. Especially since he's taking the plot in a new direction.

As for who the fourth, fictional boy is, I won't straight up say, but for a hint think back on the books that've been mentioned by name in this Quest
Let's see. There's My Chemical Romance, but IIRC that's too yuri to have many male characters. There's Ladder to Heaven, but I don't remember if Miyako ever got around to reading that. There's Paradise Lost, which—I dunno, Miyako doesn't seem like the Satan simp type.

About the name 'Project Lazarus', it's a reference not just to resurrection with a Frostfarer still being alive, but also to accounts that when Lazarus came back from the dead, he lost his emotional capacity due to what he'd seen in the afterlife. Though I admittedly forget my exact source for this.

I was originally going back and forth between Lazarus being the fourth or fifth arc, with me settling on fourth since I felt we needed some re-energising after Merely Players' downtime went longer than I expected

Okay, we currently have a tie between Embler's write-in and hesitating before acting, two very contrasting options. I'll wait a little longer for a tiebreaker, but will roll 1d2 if the tie remains

[X] Hesitating for a moment, if staying in the fight, to see what this 'Blue Lotus' was planning..

The make everything worse option is attractive, but do I really want to give Hoshizora that stick to hit her ex with.

He breaks out of his chains and then just... stands there? No, Koyomi stopped and thought, even as her sword grip didn't loosen one bit, he's counting on me to attack, isn't he? Just my luck. The first chance in years I have to utterly eviscerate a Frostfarer, and it may be the worst move I could make.

Koyomi's suspicions were soon confirmed, just how she dreaded they'd be. Both Yumemi and Hachiro launched attacks at this Blue Lotus, as Hachiro sicced both Karasu and Seizonsha at him, biting at both legs, while Yumemi unleashed another image she still had from Koyomi's tabernacle dream.
Blue Lotus then made his move by simply leaping back, getting a slight speed boost from a patch of ice he'd left on the floor. Karasu and Seizonsha were then left flailing as they fell into the endless chasm Yumemi had conjured. Koyomi expected that to be the end of them, killed by something yanked out of her own mind, but her eyes widened when Yumemi then called on the angels from the dream to carry the dogs back up.

"Having your minions attack, smart move. And here I was thinking you three would charge right into each other in person," Blue Lotus said, resting his head on his hand. "But not smart enough," he said as he shot one Heart Leech after the other at Karasu and Seizonsha, then pierced the dream angels' wings with a handful of thrown icicles.

A gasping Hachiro quickly began reciting his thawing chant, "Walk back alongside mankind..." only to have Blue Lotus come down on him and grab his neck with his freezing touch.

"You holding back, Black Rose, now that was something I failed to predict," Blue Lotus said looking over at her, talking past the choked Hachiro. "Still, a letdown. If your emotions are your powers, why not use every last bit of your anger against me?"

"Much as I hate to agree with him, why don't you?" Yumemi had to ask, then in contrast with all she'd said previously went, "You want the Frost Fair gone so badly? Well now's your chance."

But still Koyomi scowled and said nothing, then bent down to try and get that ice flower out from Miyako's wound. She crushed it in one hand, only to grasp as that made shards from the flower pierce deeper into Miyako.
She then tried moving on to cut those Heart Leeches out of Hachiro's dogs, only for Blue Lotus to toss Hachiro right at her as she swung her sword. She stopped barely a moment before she could slash right into Hachiro's neck.

Yumemi then took up the chant to thaw the dogs' hearts with "Awake from this cold nightmare, by the fire of the real." Though the dogs were free, Blue Lotus in the meantime was getting away.

"Seriously, Egret and Cornus, if you were the best RUNE had, it is embarrassing I failed to escape sooner. Of course," Blue Lotus then chuckled, "Project Lazarus would never succeed anyway. Does a parrot inherit your 'Original Sin' by speaking like a human? I think not. Nor can you humans genetically engineer yourselves into being the next Frost Fair, it is our Ultimate Blasphemy that made us who we are.
Oh yes, did your little Dandelionheart not tell you about our divine punishment? And not from any bearded old sky man, multi-armed dancer, or personified sun that you humans can conceive, I mean from God," he said, then smiled, "And yes Black Rose, I heard about what happened to your Emet from White Egret, and I as a Frostfarer do thank you."

Him saying that was the last straw. "In this room, I am the only God here!" Koyomi then roared out, with all the lighting going berserk as she charged forth at Blue Lotus.
It wasn't just her. The sight of a Frostfarer sent Kazuya scrambling back for an enchanted gun, which after a deep breath he fired right at Blue Lotus' back. But then all it took was for Blue Lotus to drop to the floor for that bullet to instead pierce Koyomi's sword arm.

Blue Lotus burst out laughing at this. "Well Black Rose, your first instinct proved right all along. My, how out of practice you all are, and before you say it has been over twenty years, to the Frost fair that is but a nanosecond," he said, then leapt back to grab a still bleeding Miyako, "Ah yes, almost forgot the young girl."

"You know the worst thing about you getting free?" Yumemi then hissed, as suddenly two fireballs appeared in her hands, "How you won't shut up!" She then tossed out those then summoned more flames at Blue Lotus, making Koyomi silently screaming at how close she kept coming to burning Miyako.
Not that Yumemi throwing flames was anything new to Koyomi, nor was her being this reckless with them. Yumemi had looked into lucid dreaming back in the Frost Decade, so naturally dreamed of fire given her foes. What was a shock was how Yumemi still kept that up to this day, and how she wasn't holding back against the specimen she'd been ordered to preserve.

Reaching the elevator, Blue Lotus smashed its controls with an icicle before he leapt up its shaft with Miyako in his grasp. He conjured more icicles below him to serve as platforms, each shattering soon after he sprang off them.

"Alert the whole base," Hachiro managed to say, as if he even needed to. "I'll call on every dog and wolf I have here, I even have bears stationed, they're close enough. And Koyomi, we're not trapped down here, we've got the stairs!" He then looked up and saw her bullet wound, "We'll get a medic."

"Don't bother," Koyomi snarled, "Killing him will be all the recovery I need."

Blue Lotus made it back up to ground level faster than the elevator ride down had taken. Already the foyer was filled with soldiers, their presumably enchanted guns all pointed at him.

"I would make a pun about a chilly reception, but even I have standards," Blue Lotus said, then held up an ice-gagged Miyako. "Since you are all here, how about we play a game? I call it 'Pin the bullet on the civilian'."

Holding a hostage didn't stop more than a few soldiers from firing at him anyway. Blue Lotus then jumped high in the air, watching from an icicle he made on the ceiling as the closest soldiers ended up shooting each other.
It occurred to Miyako that all these soldiers tricked into friendly fire in front of her would've been one incident among thousands back in the Frost Decade. Of course, her brain felt like bleeding to think anything in her nigh frozen state.

Then the second wave came in, 'soldiers' who looked like Frankenstein'd, or rather Moreau'd, hybrids of feline and human, a whole pack of big cats upright. "Nepeta's creations, have we? Knowing her tastes, I commend her restraint in not dressing you all in butler and Chippendale costumes," Blue Lotus said.
He dealt with them by skating and pirouetting around the foyer, so that anytime a remaining soldier shot at him, it'd hit one of the catmen if not another soldier. If a catman was merely grazed, he'd hiss and attack the soldier back.

Finally there came Hachiro's reinforcements, a whole pack of wolves followed by a bear all trying to flank Blue Lotus. The Frostfarer found himself backed up against the broken elevator... exactly as he wanted. He jumped up and hung from a conjured ice stalactite at the last moment, leaving all the wolves to go falling into the shaft. "Sit!" Hachiro's voice then came from the speakers, the bear then halting before it could plummet with the wolves.

That didn't stop Blue Lotus from leaping down with his icicle, which he then drove right into the bear's neck. He then looked at Miyako and asked, "So young girl, was that not everything you expected the Frost Fair to be capable of? Everything you could only imagine till now?"
He looked at all the soldier's corpses and added, "You have heard of a 'Jack Frost', right? When Pawns die still in our thrall, they become bound as wraiths to us, another evolutionary trait we picked up. Another game we played back in the day was making soldiers fight their own dead brothers in arms, if not their own families. Pity I did not get the chance to demonstrate to you, perhaps next time?"

I've spent my life learning everything about the Frost Decade, don't think I didn't know, Miyako thought. And that's why the Hanazakari are my heroes, for staring down people like you and telling you No!

Dressing himself in the uniform of a random dead solider, Blue Lotus headed with Miyako right towards the door.
"Let her go!" Koyomi's voice raged out, the whole foyer darkening with every step she took towards Blue Lotus, her arm bleeding all the while. "I thought I'd be happy after the Frost Decade, I thought wrong. I saw my fellow Hanazakari betray everything they stood for, I saw Pawns that could've been saved left to rot, I saw new tyrannies rise to replace the old. But I'd still take this utter joke of a world," she snarled, "over filth like getting to live one second longer!"

"...Then by all means," Blue Lotus suddenly said, turning around with his back to the door and Miyako held right in front of him, "Go on, come at me with your blade. All it will cost is but a single human life," he stroked Miyako's face, "and the Frost Fair, after all these eons, will be no more. All Pathragada will be in your debt."

No, Arisugawa-sama would never... kill me, Miyako thought.

But Koyomi spat back, "You were nothing but parasites. You never once had any right to live this long. And now nobody in the universe will mourn you!"

"Like I told you," Blue Lotus said, not countering any of Koyomi's words, all while Miyako could do nothing in front of him, "Go on!"

Koyomi was about to charge one last time with her sword... then collapsed, forced to detransform. She cried as she looked up into Miyako's face, the girl she would've had to kill to destroy the Frost Fair for good. "I... I can't."

Blue Lotus smiled. "Between this and the death of the last Dandelionheart, you deserve our highest honour, Black Rose. I can give you back the girl, so that every time, you will be reminded of the day you failed to save humanity," he said, then tossed Miyako back before he fled into the open.

"H-he couldn't have gone far!" Hachiro called out, trying to stifle any reaction he could have on seeing so many RUNE soldiers dead, let alone his own familiars. "He's just one Frostfarer, we'll- we'll catch him," he attempted to say. "Arisugawa, oh God."

Kazuya also made his way over, but then immediately hid the second Koyomi glanced at him, like he couldn't bear to face her.

The ice that gagged Miyako then melted in her mouth, but all she could manage to say was, "...Arisugawa... sama."

It's a date!

More seriously though, while this is obviously a bad situation, I have to give it to BL (...maybe Miyako never had a chance after all). He knows how to show off with his powers.

That's...interesting. Hard to tell what it means so far, aside from the fact that the Frost Fair are kinda dicks about "primitive" people's religious beliefs. Getting the same vibes as a Christian colonizer who laughs at "savage natives" for worshiping physical objects before praying in front of a cross and eating communion wafters.

"I would make a pun about a chilly reception, but even I have standards," Blue Lotus said.
Boo! Either make the pun or don't! None of this wishy-washy "I want to say this but I'm self-conscious about how people might react" BS.

He also still lords it over them despite saying that this God cursed his all people. Though immortality-induced emotional numbness can make it hard to hold a grudge.

Also, to recap the basic Frostfarer powerset, there's imortality, cryokinesis, emotion-sensing and draining via Heart Leeches (basically detachable organs), turning dead thralls into monsters, being stronger and faster than the human norm, short-range telepathy, and using drained emotions and light reflecting off ice to disguise themselves... as without a disguise they look like basically this.

Yeah, bit of a stacked powerset I know, but no more so than most MG villains I think, and they have had billions of years to develop all this stuff

Lazarus 4.10
[x] Nothing, just held her back tight.

Koyomi and Miyako embraced in total silence for what wasn't that long, yet felt like forever. If either of them could think of words to say, they wouldn't, for the silence spoke the loudest.

So of course, the last voice Koyomi wanted to hear, or at least the last human voice, was the one who broke the silence. "Arisugawa Koyomi, you are ordered to head to the Brigadier's office without delay," Yumemi said over the intercom, "Alone."

A seething Koyomi slowly stood up. She wanted to tell Miyako she'd be back soon, but knowing what Yumemi could potentially pull, how truthfully could she say that? Settling on one last, wavering smile in Miyako's direction, Koyomi then went to face the woman she no longer knew how she ever loved.

It was Hachiro who then came over to Miyako and said, "Nozawa-chan, I'm just as much to blame as anyone here. Especially me, I was one of Lazarus' overseers after all." He then sighed, "The shame of it all is that 'Blue Lotus' was never that high-ranking a Frostfarer. It's why we chose him to experiment on, anyone stronger would've broken out immediately. Then he broke out anyway... and far too many of our men paid the price," he looked back over the foyer's carnage. "Some Hanazakari I am, huh?"

To think only earlier that day, Miyako would've told him a Hanazakari should never put themselves down like that. Yet now, as she too looked at the corpses of those soldiers flesh and fur, maybe he should? No, he shouldn't. It was Blue Lotus leeching off me that gave him the will to break out, hold me responsible if anyone, she thought. She still didn't say that out loud, as the mere thought of how the likes of RUNE would 'hold her responsible' turned her spine to mush.

And while she knew theoretically the Frost Decade had been that bad, hearing that Blue Lotus could do this and still be far from the strongest Frostfarer truly made her wonder if she'd have had any chance of surviving back then. That she wouldn't have been a Cherry Blossom or even Black Rose, but just like those soldiers, one more corpse on the pile.

"Nozawa," it was Kazuya who then spoke, only slowly able to approach her. He stretched out his arms to show he no longer had that gun, then said, "I am sorry. I meant to shoot the Frostfarer, but... what I meant doesn't change the fact that I shot Arisugawa. I am no Hanazakari, but being reminded of my 'babysitter' from years back, I... had to do something. But if I was still emotionless," his voice lowered, "would I not have had that urge to fire?"

"Kai Kazuya," Hachiro then interjected, regardless of who Kazuya was addressing, "It is always for the best for you to have your emotions returned to you- argh, what right do I have to even say that anymore?" he cut off the standard Hanazakari answer. "I was on Project Lazarus; I would've been the one taking away emotions had we succeeded."

"Well, er," Miyako tried to find the right words, "Kazuya-kun, if you feel sorry now, that's a good thing, 'cause you can know better next time, right? Whereas if you can't care about anything, then you can't care to be better." And I guess that goes just as much for me too.

Though he said nothing, Kazuya did manage to smile again at Miyako's words. "Thank you," he managed in the end.

Another thing Miyako would've been excited about earlier, but just couldn't be after what she'd seen, what she'd caused, was that she was first on scene for the scoop of the century. What more could any self-respecting journalist want, let alone a wannabe like her? And RUNE hadn't even made her sign an NDA to boot... but when it was not just Japanese law, but international law, you risked violating, did they even need to?

Article:
Miyako the budding journalist decided she'd:
[ ] Blow this whistle the first chance she got; the people had every right to know!
[ ] Test the waters by more gradually leaking the story out.
[ ] Keep it a secret, there was no telling if and how RUNE could silence her.
[ ] Keep it a secret. Blue Lotus was still only one Frostfarer, he'd be dealt with, better not to risk panicking the public.
[ ] Ask Koyomi for advice first.

"What do you want?" Koyomi got right to it. "To imprison me, draft me, kill me?"

"To tell you the truth," Yumemi answered. Her office on first glance wasn't too different from anyone else's of her rank, grey-green wallpaper, brown desk, black chairs, though touches like brain diagrams, a shelf of books on dream symbolism, and a white egret placed in a vial were noticeably hers.

"Seriously?" Koyomi asked. "Your people telling the world the monsters were all gone while you had one in your basement wasn't already 'the truth'?"

"I may have assigned Project Lazarus," Yumemi said, brushing past Koyomi, "but I was never a believer in it, no matter what I told you. I did not bring you here to 'prove' RUNE's accomplishments to you, as if it affects anything what one recluse author thinks of us, for all our personal history," she stared into Koyomi's eyes for a second.
"Koyomi, I brought you here because I wanted you to kill that Frostfarer," she slammed her hands on her desk, "And before you ask why I didn't tell you that until now, it's because you only would've asked questions. I had to get you on edge enough that you'd do it anyway."

"Oh come on, you expect me to-" Koyomi began, but then had to think, "Well, that explains why a brigadier like you would hand out guns to Miyako and Kazuya. It was never for 'protection', it was to rile me up. And you bragging about Project Lazarus, another lie designed to anger me, right? Hah, you do realise those baiting tactics come straight from the Frost Fair playbook, don't you?"

"Whatever works," Yumemi said, then sighed, "until it doesn't."

"And was one of the questions I 'only would've asked' why you didn't just kill the Frostfarer yourself?" Koyomi asked, leaning closer, "No wait, I know why. You needed someone else to take the fall for you, couldn't have his death traced back to you. Stands out too much when you kill someone with dream matter."

"Yes, Koyomi, you are correct," Yumemi said with some struggle, then collapsed her head in her hands. "Koyomi, every inspection just leaves me dreading the day I will inevitably have to arrest you, or worse, that some other RUNE official does it for me. If I baited you into killing him, I thought I could control exactly when I'd have to take you in and just- just get it over with! The uncertainty's the worst part of it!"

"Yet you failed even that," Koyomi kept her icy glare as Yumemi began to break down, "And now a whole floor of your own soldiers lies dead below because of you. Oh, but they're just soldiers, not Hanazakari like us," her tone grew increasingly mocking, "They're supposed to die, that's what they're for in your and your superiors' eyes. That's how RUNE trains you to treat human lives, doesn't it?!"

"How I treat human lives?" Yumemi snapped back, her breakdown going from teary to fiery, "Right on our doorstep, you had the opportunity to kill the last Frostfarer then and there, yet it was you who let him go! Do you have any idea how many more lives are now in danger because you couldn't bring yourself to swing your own heart's sword?!"

"I can sure bring myself to do this," Koyomi snarled, before she punched Yumemi right in the face. As the brigadier was still reeling from the pain, Koyomi said, "How dare you pin all the blame on me when this whole 'visit' was your idea to begin with?!"

"Whatever I did," Yumemi rasped, now teary and fiery, "you're still no innocent here. All of RUNE will know what you did."

"You were in charge of Project Lazarus, you think RUNE's gonna turn a blind eye to you too?" Koyomi asked, before she walked out. "I'll take Miyako and Kazuya to the nearest bus stop, hell we'll walk if we have to."

"I'll have Hachiro arrange transport. There, happy?" Yumemi said, and then brought up something else entirely, "Koyomi, I will change things for the better, and unlike you I'll do it without living like a hermit in the woods. You of course know the name Henrietta Miranda Richards."

Slowly looking back, Koyomi had to shrug. "Should I have? British Hanazakari, I think?"

"The UK's Champion of the Frost, and now their Prime Minister. The world's first Hanazakari Head of Government, Tudor Rose in Full Bloom, how could you not have heard of her?" Yumemi asked.

"What, you think all Roses know each other?" Koyomi said, then narrowed her eyes. "I try to stay far away from Japanese politics, what makes you think I'd keep track of Britain's? Still, is that honestly what you plan to be, Japan's first Hanazakari Prime Minister? Have you finally lost your mind?"

"She has shown it can be done. And I don't see you proposing any alternative," Yumemi said.

"Whatever. Have fun with your Silver Millennium dreams, just don't count on my vote," Koyomi said, then walked right back out.

"Koyomi..." Yumemi muttered out, "Why do you have to be like this? Where's the girl I knew?"

Lazarus has reached its end. This gives you 150xp each to distribute among Koyomi's and Miyako's stats (their current stats can be viewed here):

I'd ask Koyomi for advice, but I'm pretty sure she's on the same page here, fuck RUNE. Gotta admit it's pretty reckless, though. I wonder if it's illegal in Japan to leak UN secrets? Seems unlikely, but they can still drag her name through the mud. We're gonna need that emotional strength.

Edit: I guess it kinda spells out that Miyako at least, believes it's illegal. Well, we can be outlaw buddies with Koyomi, she'll love it!

Eugh, I could handle like, Mr. Freeze, or an Other from ASOIAF. Not sure I can handle that. Maybe we stick with Kazuya, for the "teaching him to feel" ship.

Well it is mostly consistent with the description I gave of undisguised Blue Lotus previously. Except the eyes and mouth, since that ad doesn't have the inky splotches:
Four heavy, twisting chains kept a man trapped in the centre of the ring, each bound to one of his limbs. Limbs that were unnaturally stretched out, more than seemed possible even with the chains.
The 'man' had white skin, not Caucasian white but sheer white. Transparent even, as Miyako could see no less than several Heart Leeches wriggling around inside of him, though unlike with Kazuya they weren't biting onto anything. A pile of ice crystals made up his hair, and he just had two inky splotches for eyes and an inky crescent for a mouth.

Forgive me, I had forgotten. It wasn't a complaint, it's just more off-putting an appearance than I'd had in my mind's eye. I'd actually opened that video in a tab and forgotten it for the better part of a day, lost among hundreds, and was really confused when I stumbled across it later. Until I came back here.

While Koyomi definetly had her heart grow here, this might also bee the time for her to get back into working out. Anyway, time to tank Yumeni's public approval rating before her campaign even gets off the ground. That's already giving me the weirdest Samurai Flamenco flashbacks.
