[X] [Archer] Ask him.
[X] [Host] Don't be the host.
[X] [Party] Stay in the library for a bit and let everyone see the youkai first. Point out the important ones when you see them.
[X] [Other] See about explaining to poor Fate about the Ilyas before her mind explodes.
You catch your sister's eye and shake your head once - she likes playing the host, after all, and if she has something in mind to take care of things then you probably let her handle it. Besides, you want to spend more time with your friends! Remilia nods back and grins, and you can't help but wonder what she's going to do … probably something horrible to someone. "Right, Pache, time for us to go. We need to begin the Troll Sign, and your friend will be at the gates in about twenty minutes, so there's no time to waste." Oh, the mind-reader …. Patchouli's head nods jerkily and she floats out of her chair to follow your sister. How long has it been since you've seen a proper troll, anyway?
"I am not saying it, Remilia," you hear, and your sister whines in protest.
"Aww, come on! It's not as much fun if you don't say it!"
"No." Koakuma shakes her head sadly, but Sakuya seems just as confused as you are. Your gaze slides over to Fate, who seems to be having a minor crisis despite Nanoha's attempts to calm her down, and Tohsaka. After a moment's hesitation, you decide to go after Tohsaka and Archer first, and gently disentangle yourself from between your friends.
"Tohsaka! There's something I need to ask you and Archer," you say, nodding your head away from the group for a bit of privacy. Once you're suitably far from eavesdroppers, you turn to face the Servant. "So, which of you is better off?" Tohsaka scowls, but Archer just gives you a wary and confused look.
"I don't know what you mean." You nod.
"I mean, there are two of you, right? The one in front of me with Tohsaka, and the one that stayed in Fuyuki with the Matou girl," his eyes narrow slightly as he realizes you know who he is, "and I'm asking you which of you is better off." He falls for it, frowning in thought - and after a few seconds his eyes widen as he realizes what you've done. Tohsaka, face pale with anger, reaches up to grab his ear, twists it, and drags her protesting Servant away from you. You keep from laughing too loudly as she harangues him. Serves him right for being rude to you! Right, now for Fate. You scurry back to the group and float in front of Fate. "Is something wrong?" She looks at Ilya, Illya, and Illyasviel, works her mouth for a few moments, then looks away from you. You pat her shoulder. "Look, Fate, it's really quite simple," you say, and when she gives you a reassured look, you nod. "Magic." Her face breaks down again.
"That doesn't help at all!" Nanoha holds her again, and you sigh. Who should you get to help explain things …?
"… Vita, what are you doing?" The knight nods absently.
"Taking pictures. Hayate asked me to get some pictures of Fate being cute or worried and stuff, because she needs ammo against Chrono and Lindy." Fate doesn't seem to have heard that, but Nanoha gives Vita a smile your sister would be proud of. You shake your head as Vita realizes she said that out loud and turn to see who would be helpful. Illya is looking worriedly at Miyu and saying something to the unhappy-looking girl; Ilya is chattering with Lulu and Megane about something; Koakuma tilts her head questioningly at you -
"Oh, is there something the matter?" Luvia walks up to you, smiling haughtily. You look at her skeptically.
"Ah, Fate-chan is having trouble with seeing the same people." You glance at Nanoha, and Luvia laughs irritatingly again.
"Oh-ho-ho-ho! Please, Fate-ojou-san, allow me, Luviagelita Edelfelt, to explain -"
"You would have failed that test twice if you hadn't bribed another student," her Tohsaka maid interrupts quietly, and Luvia's attempt at aristocratic upbringing is dashed as she spins around angrily.
"I was not bribing that girl! We were discussing -"
"Oh, so you aren't going to deny you failed that test?" Luvia scowls at her maid and the two lock hands, trying to overpower the other. You shoot a dark look at Illya and she hunches her shoulders in embarrassment.
"… Geez. Archer, am I really like that?" The other Tohsaka mutters unhappily to the air and shakes her head. "Ugh. - Um, Flandre-san? Do you mind if I try explaining it?" You're a bit surprised that she finished scolding Archer so quickly … and she is Tohsaka … but she doesn't look like she's trying to get points, or anything, and she probably wouldn't have approached you if she didn't actually want to help …. You nod and slide to the side, and she walks up to Fate. "You're having trouble with there being two of me, and three of Illyasviel?" Fate nods, stress plain on her face, and Tohsaka smiles gently. "Right, so … okay, here's a quick and simple explanation. It's not perfect, but it should do to get your mind wrapped around it. Now, paper - ah, thanks, Archer." A small sheet of paper materializes above her and falls down. She catches it and draws a finger across one side, marring the surface with magic. "So, if we look at one side of the paper, we can see that it has certain things, right? It's its own world, with its own people and history and stuff. Let's call it 'our world'. Now, what's on the other side of the paper?" She looks at Fate, then flips the sheet over - but, of course, that side isn't marred. "It's a 'different world'. Maybe the change is drastic - humans never evolved - and maybe it's minor - more people are left-handed than right-handed. And sometimes you'll see someone in one world who's like someone from another world - same name, same appearance, maybe even the same abilities and history - but they're different people." Fate nods slowly. "Now, there's a problem with this explanation - he have three Illyasviels, but only two sides of the paper, right? Now, everyone approaches magic differently, so they look at this different ways, too. Some people liken it to a book, where each page is its own world; and others say it's more like what you get when you stand between two mirrors that are almost perfectly aligned." You look at Ilya and Illyasviel - Tohsaka is making a mistake with the three-worlds-Illyasviel approach - but both of them shake their heads. Well, that's not your story, and if they want to keep it a secret for now …. Besides, Fate already dismissed the right answer to that question. But without getting into the specifics of the differences between the Illyasviels - which isn't anyone's right to explain but their own - then explaining how Illya and Illyasviel are different is going to be difficult. Besides, Fate seems calmer, now.
"Thank you, Tohsaka. Everyone, if you could please come here? Thank you - could we see the party areas?" Koakuma smiles and nods, and after a moment several screens flicker into existence, showing the ballrooms, entry hall, and outdoor areas reserved for the party. Meiling is standing watch by the gate, of course, but this time she has a small company of elaborately-dressed fairy maids accompanying her. A few people are already here, too, which is good. "Before we go upstairs, I just want to let everyone have a chance to see some of the other guests, and to point out some of the more important ones. As a reminder, in case you've forgotten where you are - most of these people are not human. A few are, like Reimu, but most are youkai." You gesture at the miko walking through the entry hall, chatting with a purple-haired girl in a very formal kimono. "That's Reimu Hakurei, Shrine Maiden of Gensokyo. She's a good person. The girl next to her is Hieda no Akyuu, Chronicler of Gensokyo, and one of the important people of the Human Village." You're interrupted by a delighted gasp from Deis, and then a squeal of joy, and you look at the gate. "Oh, the oni are here."
"Oh, they're so big!" Deis takes a few steps forward, as if forgetting that she's looking at an image, and rubs her hands together as a dozen of the massive youkai walk down the path. Even the smallest rivals Berserker, and all are wearing nice kimonos that fail to hide their bulging muscles. All have one or two horns in their forehead, although length and shape vary. You shake your head.
"Oh, Deis … ah, there's Aya." You direct your attention to the grumpy-looking tengu. "She's the reporter for the Bunbunmaru Newspaper, and one of Remilia's friends. That other tengu with her is … Hatate." You watch the younger tengu fawn over yet another tengu, dressed all in black, with massive black wings. He seems bothered by the attention, and you frown as you look at him - he looks different from other tengu. Sakuya clears her throat.
"I believe that he is one of Lady Remilia's guests," she says. "The gentlemen in the garden are, as well." You look at the two men she refers to - one is a boy, really, with greenish hair and dark skin, and the powerfully-built man, though bald, is obviously related to him. Deis inhales sharply and stares closely at them.
"They're not human." You shrug and look around.
"… Like I said. Just because they look human doesn't mean they are. Mmm …."
"Alice is here," Ilya says, pointing at the magician in the ballroom. Apart from her usual coterie of dolls, however, she has two exceptional ones with her - one with silvery hair, dressed in dark blue and black, and one with blonde hair, dressed in red … and her other dolls seem to be spending as much effort staying between them as they do warding Alice. "Alice is another magician, like Patchouli, and dolls are her specialty."
"And Yukari Yakumo, the closest thing to an overseer Gensokyo has." The gap-dwelling youkai is walking through the entry hall, talking with your sister and followed by her fox familiar.
"Eh!? What is Verossa doing here?" You blink and look at Fate, then follow her gaze. Yes, that's definitely Verossa, still looking a bit under the weather … and two cat-youkai are hanging near him. Well, one is hanging on his arm, and the other is following them around, watching them intently. Well … Remilia did say that she might be inviting people herself, didn't she? Still, she could have told you that she was going to be bringing him - or he could have told you. No sense making two separate trips, after all!
"… I don't know, but you can ask him when we get up there, right?" She nods slowly, and you smile. More guests keep entering, of course - some kappa, a great many animal-based and beast youkai, a few more outlandish ones. And fairies, of course. You continue to point out some of the more important figures - Yuyuko and her servant; Yuuka and her ghost friend - Mima, according to Sakuya, and she's apparently an evil spirit rather than a ghost - Satori and her group, accompanied by Patchouli, and you make sure to be sure that everyone understands that Satori is a natural mind-reader, and that Patchouli was trying to put some kind of a block on it, but that if it doesn't work she'll probably read their thoughts without thinking about it; that weird lady who told Remilia there would be an earthquake - which you only really remember because Remilia brought you up to her room until the incident was resolved - and the strange person with her; the group from the last party, with the mouse youkai and the woman with the odd hair. There are a few people you don't recognize - the black-haired beauty accompanied by a nearly-as-beautiful woman with long white hair; the other white-haired girl who glares hatefully at them; the two girls with black hair, nearly twins, and the two men who watch them while trying to keep their dislike for each other hidden. And the Prismrivers, of course - you definitely point them out once they start playing. Come to think of it, you should check with Merlin about that performance she wanted to do ….
