Fire Emblem General

IIRC we've also seen War Stuff at Lv10 or so; speculation I've seen is that there'll be a few chapters of At The School before things proceed into War. Probably without as long a timeskip unless Shez can nap like Green Hair Byleth.

Bernie's new hair is peak 'I had to do something so I did anything', 'I gave up halfway', and 'I am a wreck of a person in the form of a cute girl' energy.

It's awful and I love it.

I get that people preferred moving away from the custom my unit stuff but I do kind of wish that one could customize byleth simply for nice looking hair cosmetics

In the most recent FEH story chapter Embla makes her first proper appearance and says something interesting. After Letizia is possessed and dies Embla says that there are still others with her blood. Bruno and Veronica, and she also senses two others. The implication that Alfonse and Sharena (the two most likely candidates I think) have some Emblian ancestry opens up a lot of interesting plot ideas.

However my understanding based on discussions I've seen is that this only occurs in the English translation and in the original Japanese script Embla refers only to Bruno and Veronica. Most likely they will fix the English to correctly reflect the original Japanese since this is a big point of difference.

It's a shame since the mistranslated version honestly seems more interesting to me.

I hear that the Academy Phase is only two chapters long #blessed might manage to do more than one route with great ideas like that.

Really enjoying the demo so far. One big improvement is that dialogue options (thus far) tend to be, like:
-Wish him well.
-Make a lighthearted joke.
-Express worry.

Means you don't have to read as much into the specific wording of two similar options only to find out one is actually bad, which is nice.

Also, Byleth has a personality! If I didn't know better, I'd think it was "huge asshole" but I like how from knowing Byleth in the main game it's definitely not... just there's no way to tell for someone without that insider knowledge. Also, Shez and Arval are lots of fun so far. They play off of each other well. Really makes me wish Byleth had been allowed to speak back more fully to Sothis, get a better back and forth going.

Also, Shez has like zero sense of how to not die and it's great. Apparently needed saving by Arval about 22 times in six months, including the initial fight against Byleth. I can see how, in another world, they may not have shown up at all.

WELL WELL WELL

There's some interesting stuff here (hey there Jeritza-As-Professor), and it feels a lot better to play than FEW1.

Well, I played the demo - played the Golden Wildfire route, and watched the Black Eagles one.

It's kind of a mess. Thoughts below, with spoilers for the entire thing.

Shez is boring. I don't care about them and I don't understand why we now have a new protagonist to take Byleth's place after they managed to actually sell Byleth to people enough that they actually got compelled by the various potential character arcs and the slow restoration of their humanity after years of being an emotionless Ashen Demon. The fact that their explicit sole goal is to take revenge on Jeralt's Mercenaries and Byleth specifically after they destroyed the mercenary band that Shez worked for, which attacked Jeralt's mercs first, is weaksauce. I don't like seeing this random OC donut steel show up and take Byleth's place, and the fact that they're blatantly a secret Slitherer who's lost their memory is just rancid.

The Academy phase is two missions long, because you rescue Monica before Kronya can kill her and wear her as a skinsuit and she immediately drops Tomas as another infiltrator, who yeets himself the moment he's caught. Immediately after this, there's some kind of succession crisis in Faerghus, the Almyrans attack the Alliance, and Edelgard uses the Tomas situation as a way to get Arundel exposed as a Slitherer and oust him and Aegir in the same moment, which she does by relying on the Church's legitimacy and their lending her the Knights of Seiros to keep the peace in the capital while Edelgard and her forces coup Enbarr. After this, Rhea closes down the Officers Academy and lets everyone go home.

Timeskip two years, and Edelgard attacks the Church and implicitly declares war on the rest of Fodlan by refusing to negotiate as it starts taking Alliance territory to get to Garreg Mach.

That's the actual progression of events - just a two year timeskip with no warning whatsoever. You, as Shez, stick with whichever house you joined basically just to make money, and you have no stake or buy-in on the war. You're in it solely and exclusively to get revenge on the person who defended themselves from an attack your mercnary force made on their mercenary force specifically so you could wipe them out and become the most famous mercs in the land.

I'm underwhelmed.

I... don't think this is an opinion on Byleth that I've seen particularly often. Or ever really. Like, the nicest thing I've heard said about them recently is that them being a boring piece of wood isn't their fault because the devs were course correcting too hard from Corrin being hated.

I don't agree with quite a bit of the post, but I will agree that FE3H has Byleth develop as a character- it's most explicit in CF, where Byleth regains their humanity and has their heart beat for the first time ever as the world's least subtle visual metaphor, but the other routes also have Byleth go through arcs.

I was more invested more about Byleth's journey than I ever was about Corrin's big screwed up family mess though I didn't think Corrin was a bad character, just that the game/games they were in a bit of mess and a bit frustrating in that the true boss was hidden behind a paywall.

The entire core of Byleth and Sothis's relationship is built on the fact that Byleth is learning to be a human again through their time in Garreg Mach, to the point of smiling and shedding tears and laughing, and it's ultimately the bond between them and Sothis that convinces Sothis to sacrifice herself and merge with them to save their life.

It makes it feel very weird seeing that form of Byleth here in Three Hopes where none of that ever happens, Byleth meets none of the main characters, and implicitly ends up as the major rival/antagonist for the game.

EDIT: To be clear it's not done well, and they certainly could and should have done vastly better especially with the Sothis relationship, but the bones of it are there and it's enough for people to hang a character on. It's irritating seeing it just ignored for the sake of a new protagonist who, as of the demo, is vastly less interesting despite having vastly more character to go on.

...you think that's going to stay? I really don't. I'd bet on Byleth having done some time shenanigans, having already met the Lords and is now looking for a better path than Byleth staying as antagonist.

I'm really hoping we're not getting Byleth is trying to mastermind a golden ending in all honesty. I don't expect that Byleth will stick around as an antagonist, but I don't have high hopes for what they'll do.

Also as an aside something I just remembered, they let you choose Byleth's name so literally no one is even able to say "Byleth". It's so, so dumb.

I think the game can pull Byleth's name from your 3H save if you have that installed .

And this is why they need to stop letting players name characters in games with full voice acting. The player character will basically never actually be referred to by that name and most players are just gonna go with the default if that option is presented, so it accomplishes nothing beyond making the dialogue awkward.

I genuinely genuinely hope that there are no time shenanigans. Divine Pulse is honestly just something that they use for an excuse for why you can redo turns. Even in the context of the story, it's something that only allows Byleth to go back for very short intervals. I'd find it a huge jump if that ability went from a few seconds to outright years.

Bad news chief. Implications from the trailer were that time shenanigans are up, and Arval, the weird probably god, literally named "larva" inside Shez talks a bunch about the cyclical nature of the world and how Shez is bound to it.

Playing through the demo. Started with the Black Eagles route.

I'm role-playing Shez as the dumbest, friendliest shounen protagonist, and contrasting that with Edelgard's political machinations is very funny to me.
Like Edy's planning a coup and Shez is in the corner no thoughts, head empty.
Does Leonie have any reaction to Shez' goals?
