Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Please remind me, does Sirim have Darkvision? We need someone with DV keeping watch at night.

Yep, he's got it

Can make it a kind of an interlude, depending on which character plan we choose.

Speaking of which, @DragonParadox could we write it what the other iruxi warriors are doing too? Maybe being a rotating watch throughout day and night?

Sure, feel free to write in whatever precautions you like with the resources to hand.

[] [Cob] Sleeps in the back of a wagon during the day, allowing him to be fresh all night
Think keeping Cob fresh for night is best, since not only does he work best then but can sneak around easier.
[] [Kori] Uses his Automatic Writing to divine trouble each day at sunset
Always good to make sure of little hints in case of trouble, so we can prepare accordingly.
[] [Gorok] Goes off on foot, covering less ground but also being less noticeable
Think this is good since Gorok can scout a bit without attracting too much attention.
[] [Mina] Uses some of her magic to empower herself and her companions at night (Write-in which)
Sure a few spells that can help out Gorok at least.
[] [Sirim] Tries to convince one of the iruxi warriors to let him borrow his form in an emergency. allowing him to cast without drawing attention to his true nature
Can at least ask if nothing else.
As said, maybe ask iruxi warriors to be on a rotating guard schedule?

What do you want him to sneak around at night for? Patrols?

I think it makes most sense to switch Sirim to the nightwatch mode. Not sure if Cob is more useful at night or by day.
Think this is good since Gorok can scout a bit without attracting too much attention.
On the other hand, a scout's job is to both find trouble and to prod trouble that is already there before it hits the caravan. That could be his collab project with Cob, an outwardly obvious scouting with some covert observation.

I know it's a bit wasteful of a level 3 spell, but. Life is for living.
A moment later Sirim pours himself out of the dwarf's nose and onto his heard before taking to the air once more, seeming almost despondent.
On the days where our automatic writing had predicted that things look to be ok, I'd very much like for Kori to offer Sirim to use Marionette Possession on him for an hour or two. When is the last time Sirim got to enjoy food, or tactile sensation?

@DragonParadox would the following be acceptable, assuming we pick the daily Automatic Writing:

[ ] Write In: On the days where the divination predicts no attacks, Sirim prepares Marionette Possession to use on Kori for an hour or two so he can enjoy stuff like food and generally being a physical being.

Yeah, sure that is valid.

That is a scout's job, sure. But in this case the scouts in question are party.
If they see trouble then I want them to come right back and warn everyone because I'd much rather the caravan be attacked than have Gorok and/or Cob fighting unsupported.

Party > Not-party, after all.

Just been checking out what buffs we can get via Shadow Enchantment, and I was wondering if this is on the table, DP?
School enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting]; Level alchemist 2, bard 2, medium 2, mesmerist 2, occultist 2, psychic 2, sorcerer/wizard 2, witch 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range personal
Target you
Duration 10 minutes/level or until discharged

DESCRIPTION
Your mind is able to correlate information effectively. When attempting an Appraise, Knowledge, Linguistics, or Spellcraft check, you can roll twice and take the higher result. If you have an ability that allows you to roll twice, you cannot use that ability and this benefit on the same roll.

The spell is discharged once you have used its benefit a number of times equal to your caster level.
It'd be shockingly useful for a number of situations, provided we know if we're going to face one of those rolls beforehand.

I'm very open to changing Mina's approach, if anyone has suggestions. No idea what spells she should have as 'default'. Am also ambivalent wrt Cob's action, though I think that Gorok will be safer more often if Cob is closer to provide support. On the other hand, well rested would be better for if we know an attack is incoming.

[X] Plan: Party before Caravan
-[X] [Cob] Scouts alongside Gorok during the day, making it more likely you spot trouble before it spots you
-[X] [Kori] Uses his Automatic Writing to divine trouble each day at sunset
-[X] [Gorok] Goes off on foot, covering less ground but also being less noticeable

-[X] [Mina] Keeps back all her magic
-[X] [Sirim] Sleeps all but submerges in the ground, making him very hard to target

-[x] Write In: On the days where the divination predicts no attacks, Sirim prepares Marionette Possession to use on Kori for an hour or two so he can enjoy stuff like food and generally being a physical being.

I'm all right with Cob sleeping during the day. We have plenty of people awake and keeping an eye on things while traveling, so he's less helpful during the day and it's an easy way to avoid trouble from anyone who spots a Goblin with us. I'd prefer him fresh during the night anyway, since that's when we're most likely to be attacked.

There isn't any reason for Kori to not use Automatic Writing each night, though we can't rely on it to be 100% accurate or for it to warn us of all the dangers we might encounter. Divination is far from completely reliable, after all. In addition to that, using one of his 3rd level spell slots to cast Keep Watch on himself and Gorok means they can forego sleep to keep Cob company and provide extra nighttime security.

Mina can use her Pass Without Trace SLA on Gorok, Warty, and other scouts each day. That lasts 6 hours and removes any concern about Warty leaving tracks due to his larger size. Gorok can also prepare the spell to cast on himself and Warty when Mina's expires, if they're still out scouting for that long.

Instead of sending Gorok and Warty off on their own, however, Sirim should accompany them. His Stealth is second only to Cob's among the party, and his spells and abilities will make it much safer for them to scout far ahead.

[X] Constant Vigilance!
-[X] [Cob] Sleeps in the back of a wagon during the day, allowing him to be fresh all night
-[X] [Kori] Uses his Automatic Writing to divine trouble each day at sunset. He uses Shadow Enchantment each evening to cast Keep Watch, applying the effect to himself and Gorok. That will remove their need for sleep so that they can keep Cob company through the night while staying alert for trouble.
-[X] [Mina] Uses her Pass Without Trace SLA on Gorok, Warty, and up to four more expedition scouts each day.
--[X] [Pepper] Rests during the day in order to help watch over the camp at night. Basically, does the normal cat thing.
-[X] [Gorok] Ranges ahead on Warty, allowing him to cover more ground around the caravan. He prepares the Pass Without Trace and Tireless Pursuit spells to cast on Warty. He'll cast Pass Without Trace on himself and Warty if they're still scouting when Mina's spell lapses, and he'll cast Tireless Pursuit on Warty to allow him to move at a hustle more easily without becoming tired. While scouting, Gorok will wear Cob's Tracker's Friend goggles to improve his Perception and Survival skill checks.
-[X] [Sirim] Accompanies Gorok and Warty on their scouting to provide an additional pair of eyes and magical support, if necessary. At night, he sleeps hidden in a shadow and mostly submerged within the ground to mask his presence, should hostile forces attempt to spy upon or attack the camp. He'll prepare an extra Invisibility spell in place of the Darkness spell he currently has prepared.
-[X] The other Iruxi accompany the expedition as normal during the day, but at night they maintain an independent watch rotation as organized by Gorok, so that at least one of them is always awake and ready to rouse the others if it proves necessary.
-[X] If we haven't already done so, now is the time to use the Pathfinder's Sending mirror to pass on the expedition's route.

@Goldfish well thought out. If you're willing to take the risk to add in the Marionette Possession on 'safe' days, I'd be happy to switch to yours. Otherwise I'll probably just steal your work and append that subvote.

Feel free to plagiarize me!

I don't want to use Sirim's spell slot for that, though. He's only got a few of them and unlike Kori, he can't use them on any spell he knows.

We're getting ready to go into a dangerous forest which we already know has hostile beings in it AND we have to worry about assholes the Wererat's rumors may have sent our way looking for a quick payday.

It's better to have him at full readiness for when trouble inevitably finds us. There will be better times for Sirim to enjoy the simple pleasures of having a meatsuit, and this just isn't it. That's what downtime is for.

Also, Automatic Writing is far from foolproof. We can't ever trust that it will be accurate about safe versus dangerous days.

I get that. But it's so much harder to be promised something/promise yourself something for later, as opposed to having that thing for a little bit now, and knowing that you will have it later.

Hopefully Sirim will be satisfied with only a one or two possessions for the time being. It's not like he's the given to incautious hedonism.

Honestly, I wish I had thought of this a few chapters back, then we'd have been able to get a few days of possession shenaniganary in before things got more dangerous. Ah well.

Nice plan @Goldfish, but as mentioned should we include write-in for iruxi warriors at all? Rotating guard shifts?

Oh a random note, its so nice to have a party that is mainly made up of members who can see in the dark so we don't have to worry about light sources or spells to handle that, lol.

Added this to my plan.

The Keep Watch idea is pretty good.

I am somewhat against the notion of renting out our body to accomodate Sirim. It would be an incredibly tall request to anyone, so much so that we can't ask anyone else but offer it ourselves... and even so, I think it's not wise to dangle up something desirable in front of a desperate man when it's something they won't be allowed to have. This isn't a room.

It's an incredibly intimate gesture requiring an amount of trust that... I don't think our Nidalese companion has earned yet, even despite the common perils we've been through. The main force binding Sirim to the rest of the party has been self-interest so far. It is not until this changes and he acts against immediate self-interest, that I'd be willing to consider trusting him to that degree. Until then, and I say it as a Sirim fan, I think our interactions should be driven by mutual benefit.

Arc 8 Interlude 5: Secret Spice
Secret Spice

1st of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Cob observed the man, Oka, with no small amount of fascination as he minced meat fine enough to feed it to spiders, tiny spiders, not the big ones, added grasses and powders, and made balls-of-meat. Then he fried up oil hot, hot, hot like he was making an oil trap, then more roots and ginger and onions too. It smelled really good, but what about the meat? When did those go in?

"This'll be ready in a bit if you want a taste," the man said, catching his eye.

"Why're you making balls-a-meat?" Cob asked with a shake of his head. "Meat's already in one piece, why cut it up and then stick it back?"

"An aspiring cook, are you?" Cob was used to seeing longshanks look at him like he was a whelp three days out of the cage, it was the second most common look they gave him after fear. They usually didn't bother to keep talking after that though. "Well, you see, it's to get the spices in there just right. This has already got parsley and onions, and then the soup has more onions, peepers, and these here dried tomatoes. It works better with fresh ones and the spices are supposed to be ginger and saffron, but when I asked for those at the market back in Carpenden the merchants looked at me like I asked for gold dust seasoning."

"Should've stolen it," Cob opined, giving the dish another sniff. It smelled a lot better than most longshanks food he'd gotten a whiff of, which is to say most of it hardly had a smell at all.

Slowly adding the balls-a-meat one at a time Oka laughed. "Ah, you don't pay me enough to be stealing spices. I want to keep both my hands."

"If you steal they cut off your hand?" Not that Cob ever thought the slow blind longshanks of Carpenden could ever catch him stealing, but it was good to know the risk.

"Well they are not really supposed to anymore, they abolished that old Taldan rule a few years back, but this far from the capital and especially if the thief's a foreigner with no friends in town... well I wouldn't be making any plans to play the lute, friend."

"Why hand? Not much meat." As he said this the goblin held out his hand to be more clearly seen by the light of the cookfire.

"What...?" And now there was the fear again, just when Cob thought he had gotten the hang of longshanks. He thought about it for another moment, recalling what Mina had said about eatin' thems that talk.

"So they cut off hand just so you don't have hand, not to put in stew of one you stole from?"

A nod, the food seeming forgotten as it simmered along.

"Sounds like waste of hand," he said at last. "Should least keep bones as good luck charm."

Oka didn't talk anymore, though when he was done he did hand the pot to Cob to share with Gorok and Akorian. Well, I learned how to make balls-a-meat at least, he consoled himself.

Cob Diplomacy (DC 15): 1d20 -1 = 13 (Failure)

As he set the pot down on the log next to Akorian, Cob asked straight up: "What's magic scribbles say?" He felt like giggling a little to think of what the Rock Munchers would say about writing that could capture not just souls, but the future.

"The frog's silent song shall test your wit. Should you not prove its match, a cat in the dark you'll have to hit," he recounted taking the lid off the pot and starting to ladle its contents into bowls. "Something's happening today, though what frogs and cats have to do with it I can't say."

"Where there is water there are frogs," Gorok motioned to the river snaking its way through the forest in long winding loops, the road following it along. Cob thought again of taking a swim, though maybe not while there was frog trouble afoot. Maybe he could climb up into the trees, the canopy here was thick enough that the road was almost covered with branches sturdy enough to walk on, at least for a goblin. It was nice being up here, warm food in his belly, friends... He yawned.

That is when he noticed something quite odd, Gorok had laid his head down on the log next to him, dead asleep. Didn't Kori cast a spell on the two of them so they wouldn't be sleepy?

Fortitude Saves vs Poison (DC 19)
Akorian: 1d20+4 = 22 (Success)
Cob: 1d20+5 = 22 (Success)
Gorok: 1d20+13 = 16 (Failure)

"Gorok, Gorok, wake up!" Cob started awake at the sound of the panic in his friend's voice, though his limbs still felt heavy, like someone had stuck a thousand pins in them.

"I think there was something in the sew!" Now he was all the way awake.

"Think Oka-cook betrayed us?" He asked reaching for the snap-knife, no need for magic knife here.

What do you do?

[] Interrogate Oka

[] Search the supplies, maybe it's something you were sold back in Carpenden

[] Write in

OOC: Of course the character with the +13 to saves against poison is the one who fails the check... whatever you say dice.
