Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Kidnapping would be a terrible idea if she is some sort of vampire.

I'd call it more likely that she is a mortal caster and keeps the fresh-blood-cup for ritual purposes though.

that is how it turned out with everyone's motivations and past choices.
This was what I was angling for with a less aggressive approach. I was afraid that a mention of her being a demonologist -- a diabolist? Is there a difference? -- might be enough for Eduarmot to involve authorities. Instead he keeps it in-house, which is just fine to me.

...admittedly, after the earlier visit we are likely to encounter far better countermeasures against intruders.

hired to 'black bag' Lady Breolis
...could we 'bag-of-hold' her instead? I suppose the space requirements woudn't be met?

Yeah, one of them deals with devils the other with demons in particular. While conjurers who will summon anything do exist and are some of the most scary, they are also pretty rare. See there is something of a survivorship bias, if you do not kneel to one of the powers of the Lower Planes and keep summoning fiends to do your dirty work you had better be a damn good mage... or you will be damned.

Neither default option seems ideal to me. Breolia is sure to be on high alert, wary of an attack.

Going in through her bedroom window might work, since it's unlikely the fire damage has been repaired, but it could also be trapped and ready for more intruders. Or the damaged floor could collapse under our weight when we slip in.

Bluffing our way in would probably get us in through the front door, at least, but I doubt we could do it successfully with a buffed adventuring party. We would have to go in under strength and unprepared for a fight.

Then again, Sirim and Cob didn't exactly raid the place. Their actions look much more like those of skilled thieves looking for a quick score than anyone targeting Breolia for one reason or another. After all, they snuck in, caused a distraction, stole some stuff and departed while taking care to destroy evidence of their presence.

@DragonParadox, when Kori uses Searching Shadows, what does it look like for someone in the searched area using Detect Magic?

Also, we get to keep the loot in the chests, right? Eduarmot doesn't seem interested.

  1. The aura of his spell seeps though the shadow and can be recognized with the standard Spellcraft roll. A perception roll is needed to see what direction it was cast from though
  2. He'll be keeping it safe for you to be returned upon your return.

I have the feeling that we entered into the wolf's den with this politician. He is good at his stuff.

I would hope that Breolia eventually leaves her hiding place. I feel safer ambushing her openly

Eh I'm up for kidnapping.

I suspect we are... very seriously missing some pieces of the puzzle though.
Yeah, the more I think about this, the more it feels like we're missing something really important.

I'm even second guessing whether or not Breolia is actually a baddy. I mean, she probably is, but in this particular case she might be the lesser of two evils. What if the girl went to Breolia for help to escape an arranged marriage she doesn't want any part of and we're fucking that up by interfering?

Oh well, we can only play the hand we're dealt and make the best of the outcome.

Here's what I've got so far. Leaving it a bit open-ended for now, since our approach could change a great deal depending on what we find upon scouting out the building.

[X] Break in tonight. We'll determine the best point of entry after arriving and scouting the building for alternative entrances, including and secret passages hidden from sight by magic or clever construction.
-[X] Mina will prepare an additional Hermean Potential spell in place of Sleep and an additional Heroism in place of Dispel Magic. Sirim will prepare Greater Detect Magic in place of Mirror Image.
-[X] Cob will wield the magical dagger we took from Breolia.

She isn't getting us the in with the Office of Land Management, he is.

I mean, we are planning to stab our employer and possibly murder everyone on the expedition team. This is hardly a show stopper for us.

But our earlier crit with Sense Motive suggests the noble feels some guilt over the fact, so if the outcome bothers us we might be able to play peacekeepers between the two... if Eleonora is ever found.

Arc 7 Post 26: An Answer at Odd Angles
An Answer at Odd Angles

21st of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Mina is the only one surprised when Eduarmot DeVorge decides to keep the contents of the 'chests' safe for you, the implication that he would try to bribe you with your own former loot farther beyond the pale to her than 'black bagging'. Gorok does manage to negotiate keeping the dagger for Cob in case you encounter any vampires, which is to say he silently takes it and hands it to your small friend, another piece of a growing much-loved collection. He'll get to use it soon enough.

The moon hangs in the sky, a slash of silver pilled by two sharp points yet somehow still too little light for the people of Almas, lanterns set with colored glass are around every corner, casting the world into a panoply co colors. 'Aroden Lights' they are called, the first of them had been made from the looted stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Aroden on the Avenue of the gods that now serves as the home of the Pathfinder Society. You wonder if it would have been worth going to them with this, but it's too late now. We are here to deliver a lead in Elenora's case before the night is out—

"...so if we get into real trouble make lotsa fire to cover up," you catch the trail end of Cob's advice.

—Or that.

Alas Sirim's search up and down the street finds no access into the sewers that might then serve as an entrance from below. There's a chance you might find a way down further to the east away from the Androshen, but that runs into the problem that the various embassies and foreign interests will have had their own reasons to find such ways down and either fill them in or make use of them for their own purposes.

Luck in the Muck (DC 88) = 86 (Failure)

That leaves you with two broad options the windows or the front door, neither of them particularly palatable given the ruckus you already caused earlier in the day. Breolis is no doubt on her guard and one can only guess what kind of horrors she'd be willing to conjure to protect herself and her secrets, not to mention the watch patrols are thicker now, probably in response to the fire.

"What if we go up high?" Cob makes a swooping motion with his hand for emphasis.

"The bedroom window will be guarded mark my words and if we choose another..." you start, but he cuts you off excitedly.

"Not window, chimney. Use sea-swooper, make it invisible and us too. Pick up drop, pick up drop. Sirim Snake can fly on his own. One of us can go in bag on the way so three droops way faster than climb up the side."

"Do we even know where that would land us?" Mina asks, as though she can't quite believe she is entertaining the idea.

"Laundry room right under talking room er... drawing room where Kori talked to the tricksy lady. Why drawing room? What d'they draw?" Sirim obviously explains something that Cob finds not to his liking since he makes a face and adds. "Boring"

Well his plan certainly isn't boring. With a bit of luck Gorok should be able to dig his claws on the way down to slow his fall and Cob himself seems unconcerned with any blows he might take on the way down, reasoning that you or Mina can patch him up. Alas you and Mina are the ones at most risk of getting smashed up...

"Wait isn't there a fire below?" you ask. "I might take my chance on getting tenderized, but not cooked right after."

"Drop conjured water down first, three four bladders should suffice," Gorok says head tilted thoughtfully to the side.

The people inside might notice that you know, but probably less than a window opening on its own, much less being shattered.

What plan does Kori advocate?

[] Bluff your way in (DC Unknown, likely high due to suspicion)

[] Smash through a window (Likely expected)
-[] The bedroom
-[] One of the others

[] Air drop by invisible Abductor Beast (5d6 worth of falling damage for non flying party members; 1d6 can be negated by Acrobatics for Cob and Strength by Gorok; One party member negates all falling damage by being in the Looter's Satchel)

[] Write in

OOC: Welp, you got an alternative entry, now the question is what do you think of Cob Solutions (TM).

@DragonParadox, just to confirm, the falling damage would be for jumping down the chimney, right? Not jumping off the Abductor Beast? That's what it seems like, but the wording of that vote option is slightly confusing.

The abductor beast would fly right over the chimney allowing the person on it to jump down, it is a good enough flyer and by its nature a solid enough perch with all the tentacles for that.

One additional Invisibility, or...
5d6 worth of falling damage for non flying party members
13d6 falling damage. I think I'll take it.

Wait.

Technically, if there is a rope, there are only 2 drops required. One PC with another in the satchel goes down, the satchel goes up, another PC drops down with yet another PC in the satchel. We can save on one Invisibility spell that way?

That would work, yeah.
