There is something I absolutely love about the mental image of a 600-foot dragon just bursting out of a moderately-sized reflecting pool to come to the King's aid. Presumably screaming racial epithets in the Astral language all the while because Leviathan seems just kind of Like That.

Well, what can I say? You guys are the best.

The ending of the game like, broke me. I was a wreck for hours after I finished. From the camp scene to the photograph. When I thought about it a little while later I started crying again. Like what the hell???? The next day when I opened the game up and hit the altered main menu I was just like, no, sorry, I need more time.

I understand a lot of the complaints and criticisms about FFXV. Some parts are rushed, some parts are unfinished, some parts are rough. Mechanically it's kind of messy, and there are plenty of games that are tighter and more polished. But like, there isn't another video game that made me feel as strongly as FFXV. Not any other piece of media. After I finished FFXV 2017 rolled around and I went into a string of really fantastic games: Tales of Berseria, Breath of the Wild, Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Xenoblade 2 and so on. It was a really good year for gaming - maybe the best year for gaming. But no matter how powerful or well made I thought those games were, not one hit me like FFXV did.

One of the things I like about FFXV's turn at 'summons as literal gods' is that they really do feel like gods. Like when one shows up it really is like divine punishment raining down on some poor unsuspecting schmuck. At the heights of the story's myth making, I was genuinely leaning back in awe of what was happening on the screen.

So like, I would find it perfectly believable if Leviathan had come bursting out of Ardyn's cup of tea to ruin his day :V
 
Unrelatedly, but I just remembered it; out of everything else the game does to deliberately bum you out post-Chapter 9, the lack of Ignis' cooking (sans abusing Umbra timetravel because the contents of your stomach timetravel with you apparently) is pretty well up there. Just the simple reality of having his sumptuous digitally-scanned-in food taken away from you and replaced with a plastic tray from the dining car with some frozen peas, mashed potatos, six soggy little chicken nuggies and a cup of milk. Bums you the fuck out man.
 
You really want Titan for the turtle though. Like seriously.

It being first is meaningless if the English dub is better and has more effort and fits better. Like the Japanese dub is fine. It's competent. But it's nothing special. The English dub is. Also Insomnia sure has a lot of Western palaces for Tokyo. The scenery and genre of "roadtrips" is very American. And I'm not American. I look at the opening and the country music around Hammerhead and that is very much "oh America". Certainly not Japan. Take off your weeb glasses dude.
 
Just on the subject of Insomnia, I saw Kingsglaive tonight and boy is that a London-ass looking city - complete with the quintessential English bobby shit-talking Aaron Paul at the toll booth. Like I dunno enough about Japanese architecture to tell one way or the other just from the ruined version in Chapter 14 but everything shown in the CG scenes looks European as hell.

The Citadel is literally two Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings connected to each other lol

The original concept art was produced by painting over photographs of Tokyo, but blends elements from other cities, such as London, New York and Paris. However when I got to Insomnia in game and started wandering around it was pretty much Shinjuku.

Anyway Scarlet, I'm not putting my 'weeb glasses' because I prefer the game in its original language. It's a JRPG. The J stands for Japanese. I don't want French movies dubbed. I don't watch Italian movies dubbed. I don't watch Russian movies dubbed. Where I have the option of experiencing something in its original language, the language of its creator or creators, I will take that option. Even if it's worse, but I don't actually have to worry about that because it is literally never worse. Even this dub, probably the only dub to come close to matching the voice direction of western AAA releases, isn't as good. Its most standout performances are in the ballpark, and all in all they're quite impressive, but it's just a less developed industry in the US and it shows.

I'll also never quite understand this new strain of 'you're such a weeb' arguments from people who are quite sincerely playing some of the most intensely Japanese games in the world. You know that anime is mainstream these days, right? You don't have to pretend otherwise to preserve your reputation lol

Question: since I don't speak a word of Japanese, would I still be able to pick up on the intonations? Because that's generally the reason why I pick the English version.

Yeah, that's a pretty common reason why people stick to dubs. I don't think you'll have that much of a problem, though. Human emotion conveys well regardless of language barriers, and the acting in FFXV is top notch. If you're comfortable with subs I'd recommend giving it a shot! Even if it takes a little getting used to, getting used to it will open up a lot of options for you in future media.

The Ghost Stories dub is certainly novel, as is the Danganronpa v3 memedub, but while I get a laugh out of the idea of those, if we're being honest the jokes aren't actually that good :V
 
Everyone has a 'I prefer the dub' thing. People swear by the swearing in the Black Lagoon or Panty and Stocking dubs, or the accents in the the Baccano dub (people really love fake accents). I still prefer the dub for Cowboy Bebop, for example, but I've been careful to not rewatch it dubbed for precisely that reason. I don't want to ruin my memories :V

Yeah see there's nothing wrong with liking anime, I do too. But taking the quoted stance is definitely silly and worth mocking for weebness.

But yeah @Pidl the Japanese dub is nothing special. Stick to English. Especially if you don't speak Japanese.

The quoted stance is just a fact.

Let Pidl try something new. It's an excellent cast delivering excellent performances. There's no harm in him trying it out and maybe broadening his horizons.

Why use Death and Alterna when you can git gud at dodging with the power of Holy? Also the Black Mask is fucking amazing when fighting Tonberries if no one knew that. Just put, ummm... Can't be touched? Think thats the name of the song? On in the background and just watch the little murder sith try hitting you with beam sabers and fail miserably.

Having tens of millions of followers on social media
Owning multiple popular brands of merchandise with your name on them
Being a highly paid reality TV personality​

Then Kim Kardashian qualifies.
 
It's easy to dismiss her as 'famous for being famous,' but I sure as shit haven't amassed four times the population of Australia as followers on Insta or a fifty million dollar fortune just through self PR. Nor have I ever published an article slamming the Wall Street Journal for running distasteful ads denying the Armenian genocide happened.

We're getting a little far afield, however :V
 
So I'm getting close to finishing the last few chapters.

I had heard that they were pretty railroady. I was not expecting to be stuck on an actual train.
