Fate/Desiderantes Affectibus (Fate/Zero & PMMM Cross)

Don't worry, Sayaka. As a Berserker you deal 1.5 times damage against Sabers, so as long as you remember to time your Guts and Evades properly you should be able to solo her!

I think the meta advantadge is that Saber always loses fights unless the player makes ALL the right choices, many of which are deliberately counter-intuitive.

So yeah, Sayaka should be good against- oh wait, Sayaka also always loses.

... Maybe they'll tie?

Meta-advantages huh?

Well, then. Sayaka is a survivor if over-reliant on her healing ability. Her big failure in her own legend is due to emotional self-sabotage.

Saber's fights generally end in one of four ways or some combination there-of I remember. The fight is interrupted, her master doesn't trust her to win, she doesn't take regeneration into account, or she wins via laser sword.

So, I expect Kiri ends the fight for some reason. Either he panics thanks to Berserker's regen and/or someone attacks Iri.

Major concern for Sayaka here. She's a big underdog against Saber, and for all we know Kiritsugu maybe close by. But it seems like an assassin is watching Iri. Or it could be Zouken's insects.

Or Kirei. Actually it is probably him. Just in time to encounter those two ladies on a familiar walk...

So just to kick things off, welcome back and happy new year!

Anyway onto the story, very glad to see this updated, I adored the opening of this chapter, you do an absolutely marvelous job capturing Kirei's world view and perspective and managed to make it resonate. What's more the scenery itself was gorgeous and and I loved the re-introduction of Asassin, letting them be active over passive has been a huge boon to the story and I love how well they are reading him, and the correct and incorrection conclusions he's drawing, just top tier stuff.

The subtle tension between Sayaka and Kariya came off very well, both clearly have a lot going on and aren't strictly angry at each other but at their circumstances, but its making things hard for them all the same and you conveyed that well. I especially like Kariya's asides into mindless rage & hate that he forcibly dragged himself back from and yeah Sayaka's powerful and skilled, but Rider's a uniquely terrible opponent for her skill-set, Saber is amusingly not quite as bad despite in many respects being more terrifying but that depends on a lot of factors.

The subtle back and forth between Sola-Ui and Irisvel was great, Sola-Ui's frustration and anger, her mental commentary and oof some of her language about Iri was positively visceral! The overall sense of tension and dancing on subjects was extremely well done, so kudos and props there. Given Iri is scheduled to die anyway and how much of a backstabber Kiritsugu was I also doubt that contracts validity, still a very fun idea, maybe everyone can gang up on and spank Archer XD I do and think I always will, adore Iri & Saber's relationship, so many feels, such a sense of tragedy yet warm affection, the chivalry, the kindness, aaah my heart!

I love Maiya, a very cool character, and I liked her summary of events, wow so much has flipping happened in such a short time! Kiritsugu you dumb dickhead, just because your first instinct is to backstab everyone at the first opportunity doesn't mean everyone is as shitty as you are, my gosh just put some fail safes in position for if your nominal allies turn on you, you have the resources, the power and command seals for it, aaaah you are as frustrating here as in canon, which means due credit to the author, but I want to punch you so badly!

I really enjoyed Sayaka and Kariya's chat, from the casual banter and observations about the screwed up world views of the three families, to Sayaka taking a mature retrospective stance on the situation and self evaluating her own personality and her various commitments. Also Saber had such a cool entrance, the charisma is real X3 Saber, Saber, Saber Kiritsugu is a liar, trusting him is a terrible idea. Oooh ominous stuff with Maiya.

I liked the music choices, by the way. They fit well, some even lasted just as long as it took me to read their respective sections, which is always pretty neat,

Of course, in a fight between Sayaka and Saber, the winner is Batman.

Saber's a lot more skilled in combat than Sayaka, seeing as how Sayaka was completely outclassed by Lancer even when Lancer was holding back. This ain't a winning fight for Sayaka unless she uses her NP, or someone interferes in her favor.

Yeah, but even while holding back, Lancer was still dealing unhealable wounds. Saber doesn't have that advantage.

What Saber does have is a stable power supply, that isn't at risk of burning itself out.

It's good to see this story is still being written. And it looks like things are approaching the endgame now.

Yep. It's been a long, long time coming, but both the ending and the climactic battles I imagined when I first started writing this story are finally in sight. As the author, it's simultaneously exhilarating and daunting because while getting to this point has been an up-and-down journey bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion will likely be the greatest challenge yet.

Too bad, so sad, Kariya! Instead of focusing on the main quest all this time you should've been doing dailies! Everybody knows that's the fastest way to level up a servant!

Or Kirei. Actually it is probably him. Just in time to encounter those two ladies on a familiar walk...

The more things change, the more they stay the same...maybe.

Thanks for the kind words! I have a bad inclination to "sanitize" my protagonists and depict them as rational actors when I write, which isn't realistic at all (especially for characters like Kariya and Sayaka), so I focused more heavily in this chapter on how their own shortcomings complicate their relationship despite good intentions. And yeah, Sola-Ui and Irisviel's scene was a delight to write and might have been the most enjoyable in the entire chapter. One of the great things about AUs is the opportunities they provide to have characters who never met in canon interact with each other, and envisioning how Sola-Ui and Irisviel would play off each other was a lot of fun.

Yeah, while Saber isn't as disadvantageous an opponent as Lancer was due to his spears neutralizing two of Sayaka's strengths (regeneration and sword conjuring), all else being equal Saber would still likely win against Sayaka nine times out of ten if not more. Fortunately for Sayaka, there are plenty of x-factors that could complicate the match-up, and both Saber and Sayaka have a track record of things not going smoothly for them. Then again, the second Heaven's Feel movie did show that a complete and utter steamroll can still be a feast for the eyes.

Sayaka: ...Why is boss music playing? More importantly, why isn't my boss music playing?

While Sayaka is at a fairly distinct disadvantage against either Saber or Rider, I find it kinda interesting that who she's more disadvantaged against flips depending on if we're considering Symphony of the Witch.

Without it, She has no hope at all against Ionian Hetairoi but has a chance against Saber since she has Instinct A and is quick enough to reasonably avoid being Excaliblasted. She still loses a sword fight more often than not but she has a chance to pull something clever with her regeneration.

With SotW she has a reasonable chance of beating Ionian Hetairoi since the Labyrinth feeds on the life force of anyone inside it and Rider himself is actually pretty slow. It becomes a question of if Rider and his army can deal enough damage to Sayaka (or survive 30 minutes against her) before the combined effect of the environment eating them, waves of familiars, and a giant mermaid smashing them hits someone critical. On the other hand, Octavia is prime Excalibur fodder.

The real question here isn't going to be who wins, I think, but who loses first- and provided Sayaka doesn't accidentally eat her Master's mana dry or get excalibur'd, I don't like Saber's odds of not reacting to a third party factor in the fight correctly.

You: The ending of the story approaches!
Me: (notices no one is going after Archer)
Me: Oh noooo.

Thanks for the kind words!
NP, thanks for writing! (I responded to the rest on SB, but fair points there!

I'm still waiting for Angra Mainyu to come into play. Because in the OTL it was kind of passive aside from tempting Kiritsugu and Kirei when they got covered in it's 'goo'. Here's it's seen Madokami/'Ahura Mazda' and is rather riled up.

So I suspect that the fight is going to initially slowly but surely go Saber's way (how fast depends on if Kariya starts breaking down due to the mana demand). However due to the 'x-factors' mentioned; I suspect that the duel is going to go sideways with Sayaka requesting that they put the 'duel to the death' on hold until the OMGWTFBBQ!?! scale problem is dealt with.

Yay, updates!

It's well written and I'm eager to see where it goes. The end is niiiiiiiiiigh!
