Evangelion Ideas Thread: You Can (Not) Rebuild

So they decided to ditch the whole Frankenstein EVA thing for Unit-02 that they showed at the end of 3.0, by the looks of it? Good, I can't say I'm sad to see it go.

My guess is that with it being proven that Unit 01 being in WILLE's custody isn't enough to keep NERV from doing their usual shtick because Unit 13 can do Impact shenanigans too, WILLE went all-out with Unit 02's reconstruction as a desperate measure.

Shinji fought with skill against Zeruel, while against Bardiel the best the dummy plug could do was thrash mindlessly. It would've been hit by every attack Shinji dodged, and most likely been destroyed since it would not be able to rouse the Evangelion's protective instinct or access any of its higher powers.

The dummy plug can't be that good if all it has is an inability to feel pain, otherwise it would've been used in Unit-00 against Zeruel instead of launching it with Rei. Especially as it's brought up in the Classified Information files that merely activating an Evangelion is the best the Dummy Plugs can do. So uncontrolled berserking is likely all you can ever make a Rei-type DP do.

If Asuka's there the dummy plug would likely attack her if it fell under Arael's influence. And again, the Rei-type dummy plug is a mindless berserker. It can't be ordered around or told to use weapons so against Arael it's worse than useless.

Gendo is terrified of his son/ hates him and also believed his wife would not mind the pain he directly caused the son she loved very much, so his judgement is not exactly trustworthy.

You know, giving this some more thought, the Rei-type Dummy Plug would be a terrible option against nearly all of the Angels NERV fights.

Sachiel: Given that it took a Berserk Unit-01 to take it out, its likely the DP wouldn't be able to outdamage Sachiel nearly fast enough to avoid getting either lasered to death or avoiding the self-destruct attack.

Shamshel: This one the DP might be able to beat, assuming it doesn't cripple anything important with the tentacles.

Ramiel: Runs straight into a laser and dies. Can't use the Positron Cannon so it's a catastrophic failure here.

Gaghiel: Under the same conditions the pilots had, The DP gets smacked off the ship, falls into the sea and runs out of power.

Israfel: As a berserking monster, The DP isn't capable of synchronized attacks and wouldn't be able to defeat Israfel before it either ran out of power or was lasered to death.

Sandalphon: Capture operation is flat out impossible.

Matarael: The DP would waste all its battery time just trying to get to Matarael in such a confined space, and wouldn't be able to dodge any of the acid. However, it is possible it might still kill it considering how godawful Matarael is in a fight.

Iruel: N/A.

Sahaquiel: Once again, incapable of any sort of tactics at all, would fruitlessly hammer away at the AT field until it was crushed under the Angels sheer bulk.

Leliel: Unable to access the Evangelion's higher powers, it would get caught in the shadow, then run out of power and die.

Out of the ten angels before the DP was finished, it would only break even against Shamshel, and would be a poor or suicidal choice against the rest compared to an actual pilot.

Part of this story

The Admiral looked at the assembled people. "So what are we going to do about the kid?"

"What can we do?" replied the chief medical officer, exasperated. "He doesn't quite have as many issues as National Geographic, but it's a near thing. Especially since he figured out he definitely was not in Kansas anymore."

"We also can't let the media anywhere near him. People are celebrating that we now have a counter to the Kaiju, but that will swiftly turn into outrage if they find out that the pilot is an emotionally stunted 14 year-old," the Director of Media Relations chimed in. "Also, we've cooked up a decent cover story of the mech being a joint project between the US, Japan, and Australia with some financial support from the rest of the Coalition. We're still working on the paperwork for materials, man hours, and pork but for once everyone is onboard. The official reason the mech Unit-01 aka 'Shogun Oni' was not unveiled sooner was concerns over backlash for wasted resources. So far the narrative hasn't run away from us, but we need to make it bulletproof before they really start digging."

"Nice work, see if counter-intelligence can help you with any of that. They like messing with the media when it comes to military secrets. But back to the kid, what are we going to do with him? We can't leave him cooped up forever and we can't let information about him leak out, so ideas?"

"We could send him to Nevada. There are plenty of restricted areas that it wouldn't be too odd for that to be the main base of operations for the research, development, and late stage prototyping," suggested one of the aides.

"No dice. How are we supposed to justify moving the robot? We can get away with saying initial research and development was handled at NTS or Groom Lake, but saying that we actually moved Big Hurt from central Nevada to Australia with no one noticing isn't going to fly. Whidbey Island and the nearby test range would be far more plausible, not to mention they have facilities that can easily hide Shogun," an officer from planning shot back.

"Okay, so the kid and the Iron Giant get new accommodations at Oregon for the time being. Once they're on dry land, higher will probably hand him over to DARPA to figure out what makes both of them tick. Sounds like a plan, so hop to."

Shinji looked around the spacious room he had been led to once he got off the decidedly American ship he'd been on for the last few weeks. Shinji pulled out the music player they had gotten him when he'd requested one. Idly he flipped it over in his hands like he had since he received it. Things were just so different without the brush with Armageddon that was Second Impact.

The slim music player in his hand proved it in microcosm. Clicking a few buttons brought up classical music, and Shinji laid back on the strange bed to stare at the unfamiliar ceiling. He hoped Asuka, Misato, and Rei were okay.

Note: Blargh, way too long to write five hundred measly words. Probably do an edit and error checking pass when not tired.

Looks good to me. And boy, that would be a fun one... So long as Unit-01 has power, it can stomp all over any Kaiju with AF-Field Haxx. Or indefinitely, if it has the S2 Organ. But success will be no joy for Shinji, since he'll be increasingly sick with worry over the people he left behind. Good writing style, too.

.....There's also the slight problem of DARPA trying to figure out EVA based tech.

I mean, sure, Yui couldn't figure out a way to clone LILITH, but considering that ADAM was somehow cloned instead?

DARPA might be able to get that palette swapped version of Unit One that turned up in one game as a bullet hell shooter, then the trouble would start araising....depending on which version it is.

Too lazy and late at night to write the snippet to address that right now, but eventually DARPA and the Pacific Coalition would throw up their hands in frustration with alternate universe technology and just say it's a super-prototype. To fit with the rest of the cover story, the designer/person-that-made-the-magic-happen died testing it to prove it wasn't a massive waste of resources. Because she was just that paranoid (rightly so, since she worked in a 'burn after reading' environment) most of her notes were encrypted; especially those pertaining to Unit-01's force field projectors. Without her key which was destroyed in the accident, the files still exist but are unrecoverable.

Close to the truth, but with a layer of lies because the truth about Unit-01 makes people squeamish.

Something I've been chewing on for the past few days.

What if Yui's predicament isn't exactly as planned? I mean, there's not much use to being humanity's living memento if you cannot pass on their memory to any aliens you might run into throughout the eons because you cannot meaningfully communicate with the outside world. So... what if that part happened because a certain someone took an issue with Yui tampering with her soul?

"I'm not sure whether you are even real."

The vaguely feminine thing grinned. - "If I'm not real... then what about you?"

"I know that I am real."

"There is your answer."

"I also know that this wasn't supposed to have happened. Me being here, that is... wherever this is. This cannot be Eva; I know that it is soulless."

"From my point of view, you are exactly where you are supposed to be."

"I don't understand."

"Contact experiment, human transmutation... it doesn't matter what you call it. Wanting to be eternal proof of humanity's existence... but what exactly is it that makes humans more worthy of being remembered than any other form of life upon your world? What makes you worthy of assuming such a mantle yourself? One you decided upon yourself and forsaken everything you had for?"

Yui's eyes narrowed. - "What are you?"

"I...?" - If it was even possible, the entity's grin widened even further. - "One name you might have for me is the world. Or perhaps the universe. Or perhaps God. Or perhaps... the Truth."

The moment I finished reading what you put there, I threw money at my monitor with my sprained hand so hard that there's a hole in it. And the wall behind it. And probably through the neighbor's tree and hedge statue of Joseph Stalin.

You bastard. I hope you're happy. :V

First official image of "New Unit 2"

It's terrifying, Asuka will love it.:p

It's kind of noticeable how it takes it's design cues from Unit-01, most notably the teeth and frill in the back. Then again this isn't shocking, the rebuild lost some subtlety due to time constraints, but they've been pretty blatant that Asuka and Shinji are still the same people. Just instead of Asuka pushing people away by being a abrasive and Shinji curling in on himself they now both act like angry assholes when it comes to dealing with their pain.

It just makes some twisted sense, you know? That Yui wants to keep humanity's memory alive but cannot actually pass that memory on; Kyoko wants to make sure her daughter is safe but is in a mental state where she cannot comprehend or recognize her success at doing so; Rei I wants to return to nothingness but is instead trapped in a body blighted not by sickness or age and is also glitchy enough that NERV won't send it into combat unless they have no other choice.

This is the kind of ironic shit Truth tends to pull.

Make you wonder what Truth would make of Shinji at 3I. On one hand, he just killed humanity. On the other, well... That was the end result of months of sustained mind rape, and he was in no state to make any sort of sane or rational choice. Not much "A god am I" arrogance here. Just a hurting and confused boy. And before anyone mentions the Elrics, they knew what they were getting into to a certain extent. Shinji had no idea what the heck was going on at any given time.

I didn't know that about the meaning of the name, I always knew Ikari meant Anchor which is in keeping with pretty much everyone in the show being named either after a ship or a part of a ship. I don't know if too much can be read into the meaning of the name Shinji though, as far as I know he was named Shinji after Shinji Higuchi

Like many Japanese personal names, there are multiple valid kanji combinations for writing Shinji with, and because the character names in NGE are consistently written in katakana we don't know which kanji it should be written with.

Looking at the list, and calling on the wonderful resources of Jeffrey's Kanji Lookup, it seems that 真 "true; reality" is a fairly common character for the shin part, and the combination of that with 治 ji "rule; reign; be at peace; heal; cure; conserve" is certainly one that exists, so... "True Ruler" seems a narratively plausible name for Shinji given the events of the End.

But also, what jcmoorehead said :)

Maybe not the physical kind of torture. Apparently there's a fic existing where SEELE's punishment for meddling around with things they shouldn't have is to remain in Instrumentality... by themselves. Alone. Forever.
