I find something deeply amusing about a tranquil village tree-elf who got way into guns as a hobby.

[X] [BACKGROUND] Station Rat
[X] [SPECIALTY] Gun Archivist

Station Rat plus Gun Archivist seems interesting. Species is Human: yes, gacha. XD

Alright then, I'm going to take a dive into the options I'm liking the look of (mostly looking into all the combos of all species and specialties would be far too long).

I am not particularly interested in the Hicys or the Tortolan. For the fomer, the plant and fungus magic just doesn't seem to gel well with any of the classes except maybe alchemist, and I'm not really a fan of RNG in our core skills. I'd be perfectly fine with the reduced speed and forced natural armor of the Tortolan, but combine that with our armor having built in bypass points and making so much stuff just cost more turns me off it.

Of the rest with the two high level classes, that gives:

Dark Unholy Souls: Bhomon/Apostate. I think @Metarite summed it up pretty well. Very low HP, and most of what we got is reserved for casting spells anyway. Better work on those dodge rolls.

Fallen Fox-cat: Felixar/Apostate. Not much to say about this combo other than it exists, but the class negates the species Max MP negative, and with the boost to climbing and stealth it's probably the best option we have for hiding from conflicts caused by our specialty.

Night Halflings: Bhomon/Astral. I can't really say much off the top of my head about this combo either.

Night Predator: Felixar/Astral. @Metarite summed up this one pretty well too IMO. A sneaky burst caster striking from ambush and hoping to kill you before they run out of MP. I think there's a significant amount of leeway that may come into play with the backgrounds though. I could see the Eclipsed Orphan or Station Rat backgrounds leaning more towards the "sneaky" side of sneaky caster, while the noble or temple orphan backgrounds may run more on the caster side.

Finally I think Human/Eclipse/Astral deserves an specific mention besides Human just slipping into any build really, in that it would give us a random species ability tree, a random background passive, and a class passive that changes depending on where we are and what time it is. If we want to keep the dice rolls going for the rest of Char-gen and have some variation in the actual game without too much randomness this is the character for that.

There is something incredibly romantic about a space-age magician using the power of the stars to cast his spells. In addition, different bonuses depending on the sun of the local system sound very exciting. I wonder how this works for systems with more than one sun.
Noble was chosen by me as the backstory that gives us the most opportunities for social play. It's simply too exciting a prospect to pass up.
Also, the Feline Noble Family. I want to see it.

The human could be a curious part of the assembly due to random heritage, but that's only a chance of random heritage, and otherwise, the human is too... ordinary?
As for the Angelic Apostate, as mentioned, I don't want to mess with a faction we haven't even seen. It will be unpleasant if they turn out to be otherwise nice people.

With the wording of how the class ability works, the Max MP negative is actually an antisynergy, for our max HP is penalized by our % of MP we are missing, and with a reduced max, every point is now worth a bit more percentage wise. It isn't cast from hitpoints, remember.

As for me personally... Star magic is always fun, so is alchemy, and could be convinced to go pew pew with the guns. So very indecisive!

I feel torment, for it seems the votes turn against my gun-elf from the bullet tree glades.

I was picturing a night-elf flavoured mix of robin hood and the TF2 snoipah.

Yeah, luckily the Angelic Apostate specialty comes with a Max MP bonus built in to help with that no matter which species we choose.

I suppose that does kill the idea of a Tortolan Tank Mage with that specialty though, building more HP would just see more of it taken away per percentage penalty.

I kinda like the Tortolans. I can see they're not going to win, but I'd like to make a token defense for them.

Tortolans have all the tools to mitigate their own weaknesses.
-Slow movement won't be debilitating when space travel is in the setting, and haste effects are frequent in MMOs.
-Slow reaction times is less worrisome when Tortolans are able to speak with spirits, and be forewarned about things.
-The higher cost of armour doesn't mean there's no armour to be had. And since we already have armour, we can wear less of it. Perhaps only over the weak spots if we're going with a mage build in the first place.
- A tortolan is a larger target, but most of that target is still shell and scale. The amount of soft target on a Tortolan might be less than that of a Bhomon.

So I'm giving a token vote for:

[x] Night tortoise
-[x] [SPECIES] Tortolan
-[X] [BACKGROUND] Eclipsed Orphan
-[X] [SPECIALTY] Astral Mage

[x] Alchemical Tortoise
-[x] [SPECIES] Tortolan
-[X] [BACKGROUND] Noble Scion
-[X] [SPECIALTY] Arcane Alchemist

Besides that, my preference is for builds centered around Noble Scion and Astral Mage or Arcane Alchemist, for the social aspect of the game that it brings. While Eclipsed Orphan is cool, I don't think mechanically, the three options don't bring anything outstanding to the table, except for Tortolans specifically. Bhomons does seem to mesh specifically well with Arcane Alchemist, what with the glass and glassware. As for Astral Mage, Tortolans seem the best fit to me, but Felixar is second on the list.

[X] Plan: Noble Glassy Grenadier

They possess an affinity for plant-linked magics in general, but have a special fondness for fungi, which they utilize to create most of their technology.
Considering that Hicys can use their plant / fungi magic to create technology, there is quite a bit more synergy with Gun Archivist than it seems at first.

[X]Plan: I Shoot For The Trees

[X] Plan: Who Needs Opposable Thumbs?
-[X] [SPECIES] Felixar

[X] Plan: Unholy Souls

The species is blessed by the gods, the class is rejected by the gods. It sounds fun.

Alas, no more wild options. But with what we have, there is a couple I like:

Sneaky alpha strikes

[X] Plan: Noble Night Predator
-[X] [SPECIES] Felixar
-[X] [BACKGROUND] Noble Scion
-[X] [SPECIALTY] Astral Mage

We have it as plan "Gun cat" but we should really call it plan "Gunsmith Cat". With all that nobility implies some higher social structure, we certainly could have a lot of toys or at least access to them! And what better way to show off your hipsterdom in the far space future by referencing a late 20th century nerdy anime series.

[X]Plan Gun Cat
-[X] [SPECIES] Felixar
-[X] [BACKGROUND] Noble Scion
-[X] [SPECIALTY] Gun Archivist

I also like the idea of guns that shoot fungus laden ammo. The rural bonuses arguably make us a great potential sniper too.

[X]Plan: I Shoot For The Trees
-[X] [SPECIES] Hicys
-[X] [BACKGROUND] Tranquil Village
-[X] [SPECIALTY] Gun Archivist

There are arguments that have been made for the first three better then my small commentary, but i'll also push for this one. Note with the glass, fire, and sand as specialties for being a delicious, delicious Bhomon. Think about what high packed explosives we could get bonuses too, as well as the bonuses to stealth for being smol. A sneaky bomber with some alchemical bonuses (at the very least to better bottles for our mixtures) is not a bad way to go.

[X] Plan: Noble Glassy Grenadier
-[X] [SPECIES] Bhomon
-[X] [BACKGROUND] Noble Scion
-[X] [SPECIALTY] Arcane Alchemist

Definitely a much better name. I shouldn't have tried naming things while sleep deprived.

The vote is going pretty close so far. I wonder how much time we have until its completion.

I hope Felixar Noble wins. There are many reasons for this, such as the character's significant involvement in the affairs of the world and social opportunities. Although I can't deny that the image of the Felixar Aristocratic family looks extremely exciting. Alisha is sure to achieve greatness with this backstory!
