Dragon Summoning

[X] Tell him that you aren't a priest; Far from it. The spirits you work with are... Kinda the inverse of the ones priests deal with. Those ones are singular and large and have much personality and will of their own. The ones you work with don't have any of that. At all. They're small and unfeelingly and unerringly follow whatever ruleset is imbued into them at creation with near-perfect accuracy and extreme speed. And they don't exist naturally; They're made, and unmade, easily within a spirit machine, but could never survive outside it. They can do amazing things, especially acts involving anything quantifiable with mathematics and analyzing vast quantities of data, but only if you can write meticulously deep and precise instructions for them to follow exactly. And that was what you were studying and learning in depth to do.

[X] Ask Edaine how far off the danger of Heivolur's invasion is. We talking months? Weeks? Days? 'Cause you want to know just how much time you're gonna have to actually train and study and all that to even possibly help... Er... What even is the name of the nation we're in?

[X] Tell him that you'd be far more helpful to this nation staying well back from the front lines than being a big, fat target to get focus fire'd on. One possibility is you could learn how to perform summons, and do them better or more often then a non-dragon could. Could you have a look at the summoning books Edaine has? Along with any and all other books to learn more about applied magic?
-[X] Learning to summon would also give you the opportunity to try and summon the other lost dragons without having to get Edaine or anyone else involved, sidestepping the binding issue. And also work on developing a way to locate them in the Tantara.

[X] Tell Edaine that you think it'd be a good idea to keep your presence as secret as possible, lest Heivolur and their allies catch wind your nation summoned a dragon and look to send agents to try to kill me before I can possibly help... Or kill Edaine so they can cast their own binding on you.

[X] Ask him how experienced and capable he is in the magickal arts. How much knowledge does he have of the workings of summonings and other magicks? How many summons has he performed and what kinds? What method did that spider demon summoning ritual use to try and target a spider demon? You'd like to figure out why it targeted you rather than a spider demon. (Might give insight into targeting the other lost dragons.)

[X] Also ask if he knows if the summoning spell is designed to strip the target of everything they're wearing or carrying and sever any link they have to extra-dimensional storage spaces. As explanation for why you're asking, tell him that before you got chucked into the Tantara, you were clothed and had a voidspace inventory attached to you, all of which is missing now. You want to figure out if it was the summoning that did that or not.

[X] Look up at the summoning building and at the clearing around it and ask who had it built, who owns it now and how remote this location is. Because you didn't see a single other building around when you came outside, so it'd fit that it's way out of the way in case a summon goes bad.

[X] Ask under what circumstances is he here, attempting to summon a spider demon. Was he hired to do so by the one who owns this place? Is there somebody expecting results and he needs to deliver and it'll have to be you if it's not a spider demon?

[X] Ask if "Cayshic West (Imperial)" brings anything to his mind, like a location. If Edaine asks what that name is or how you know it, tell him it's the label on the language codex your translator determined is the closest match for his language and you're trying to figure out when and how your people recorded it. Also examine this language's spirit script's metadata for a date or location of recording.

[X] Yawn hugely (and toothily) and tell Edaine that you're exhausted, so you hope he doesn't expect you to stay awake a whole lot longer. Your mental faculties are flagging and the idea of just passing out here and now is slowly growing more appealing. You do hope there is some kind of safe shelter nearby you can fit in to sleep in; One outside the mana-stifling zone of the summoning building.

What works better, if you're a dragon, is Breath-based magic to sound supernaturally likeable and convincing. That stuff might be ubiquitous by now if they hadn't figured out how to detect it.
Ah, but would this world have the knowledge and means to make detectors for such a act? If they couldn't, or could only rarely, it could be worth pursuing, depending on if you could figure out how to cultivate that "silver tongue" Breath ability and how long it'd take to train.

But how could he get Edaine to summon them without binding? Zalan spooked him greatly even with an apparent binding.
Learning to do the summon yourself would sidestep most of this issue, but that'll take time and you got no idea how long the lost dragons have 'till the things in the Tantara get 'em. So... Could weave a line of bull like all dragons on your world are inoculated against binding with a version that doesn't subvert, but does violently kill the binder and everybody else nearby before sending the dragon to safety and you couldn't get inoculated 'cause of medical reasons. Would make 'em real reluctant to attempt to bind one of your fellow lost dragons, if he buys it. But you're bad at lying at the best of times, and now is far from those times, so keep this idea down the list.

Failing that, would it be better to subject them to a binding if it means getting them out of the Tantara? Or if it means keeping them out of the hands of other wizards?
If you can figure out how to break a binding, or transfer the "ownership" of the binding to yourself, then perhaps. But even if you do then there's the risk of them being taken where you can't get to them to do that. Like to fight on the front lines.

It's fortunate this update's pic is the first with what I assume is Zalan's official fur coloration (shades of grey, which reminded me of tozols' fur color (or lack thereof) scheme) since it allowed me to slap the binding color options over it to see how they look against his fur. And as much as I'd like to go gold 'cause shiny and dragon stereotype, the blue looks better against Zalan's fur. So, my vote:
[X] Yes
[X] Blue (default)

Update 23: Out of Scope

[x] Consider if you could hack an eidolon. Maybe if the enemy force worships one exclusively, you could turn that connection against them? Or just de-power their priests.
That's not really-

uh

...Zalan still has his Interface Terminal module. It's a much more powerful tool than his Personal Attendant when it comes to digging into constructs and spirit-machines. It's only meant to work in certain specific ways, but, Zalan broke its safeguards last year to force two incompatible systems to network together. (It didn't even work.)

In theory, Zalan can use it for lots of stuff it was never designed for. In theory he could even use it on wild spirits. But a sapient eidolon? There's no way, right...?

The possibility makes him nervous. He's not prepared to take responsibility for something like that.
[X] Could Zalan build an Eidolon, given how mana rich it is here? Or would that still require a base hardware layer to run on?
The equipment Zalan uses (used???) was meant to avoid coming within ten metaphorical miles of creating an eidolon.

Helping natural spirits develop into friendly eidolons is something people do, but that's more like a cross between gardening and parenthood than programming.

Zalan is too hungover to think about this.
should have said Scholar. I believe that is thee olden way of saying graduated collage student.

[X] ask what made him go from potato farmer, to trinket maker, to would be summoner? Then ask what he hopes for you to do as a newly freedom impaired conscript of this war you're just finding out about?
"Nnnno, not a priest," Zalan replies. He struggles with the unfamiliar language. "More, a scholar? A clerk?"

"I, see..." Edaine says. "I believe I'm starting to understand what you meant by 'civilian.'"

He doesn't sound happy about that. Of course he wouldn't.

"Bet you're wishing you summoned a dragon knight or something."

"It... would be very arrogant of me to wish for something like that," he mutters. "You're a very, uh... Nobody's summoned a dragon in ages. I can hardly expect the perfect one. Uh, not to imply you are imperfect...?"

Zalan isn't sure what to do with that. Edaine's combination of calculating wariness and energetic curiosity is kind of exhausting. But then, right now the movement of air through his fur is exhasting, so Zalan might not be the best judge of that.

He considers asking why Edaine decided to go from farming potatoes to being a wizard, but the choice seems kind of obvious, doesn't it...? Without access to modern infrastructure or education, magic talent is going to dictate the quality of life for the whole community. Zalan can ask HOW he managed to do so later, when he feels like flattering the foxfolk...

[x] "Can we rest? The last days have been horrible for me."
"Hey, is it okay if we rest here? The last few days have been... horrible."

"For a little while," Edaine says. "I'd like to make it home while there's still daylight. The woods aren't safe at night. We can spend the night in the chantry building if need be, but I'd rather not."

"Er, just how unsafe is it at night?"

"This place was built to call down monsters," Edaine says. "In lands where they might already manifest."

"...oh."

Zalan reels slightly, but it shouldn't have been a shock. Untamed, unregulated mana, left to gather and pool where it whims, will create all sorts of dangers that people here will find normal, but which he can only guess at.

The collector network back home wasn't just meant as a convenient power source. It was built to end the Mythic Age.

"If I may ask politely, what has troubled you so, o dragon?" Edaine asks.

Zalan makes a tired rumble. How does he phrase this understandably? Should he even try? Is he putting himself at some disadvantage? What if he accidentally says something really offensive...?

...and what about the 'o dragon'? Is he playing up the deference as a test? Is he worried Zalan will get angry...? Or is it reciprocal and he should be addressing them as 'foxkin' or something? Or... 'human', even? A lot of non-human smallfolk get offended if you say they aren't human, while others get offended if you say they are...

oh my god just say something before you look like an idiot staring at nothing.

"...I had a large project I was working on. One of those special machines I mentioned. It was meant to ward off disaster. But I failed," he says. "I got it working, but too late. Way too late."

Suddenly, silence seems like it would have been the better choice. Zalan's emotions roll across him like a wave. He tenses, and strains to suppress it. Then, to stay unmoved and stonefaced as it washes past. He wants to be somewhere else. The warm sun and cool breeze do nothing to comfort him. He wants the fox's curious, prying gaze somewhere else. He wants a soundproof door to hide behind and a dark, soft bedroom.

"...The walls between worlds broke," he says. "Other creatures were pulled into my world. They started attacking us. Everything just got worse, and weirder, and then I was ripped free into... I don't know. Wherever we are. Wherever you found me."

"So you really are from a whole other plane," says Edaine. "And, others like you?"

"Yeah. Probably," says Zalan. "Gonna bind them next?" he scoffs.

Edaine doesn't answer.

Zalan isn't sure why he blurted that out. He said it like an insult, but he quickly realizes just how flimsy the bitter sarcasm was. God how he wants to see Edaine march right back in there and come out with Tieran-Sha in tow.

I can't let him bind Tier, though. Or. Maybe I can let him do it and then just rip his head off...

God. I can't let myself think this way.

"Hey, is it going to be okay if you bring me back home?"

"I think so," Edaine says. "Although, I... may already have not been acting in accordance with my instructors."

"Great..." grunts Zalan. "And this is worse, right? This is worse than that."

"Not... necessarily," Edaine says. "Success requires no apology."

Okay, so I'm a conscript AND someone's unauthorized project, he thinks. Maybe that's leverage.

"But I'm only successful if I agree to fight for you. And if I CAN fight. And if your master doesn't choke on his tongue because he told you not to risk a fuckup and then you fucked up."

"...Mmmmore or less. Yes," says Edaine. "That binding magic should help smooth things over, at least. Meaning no offense. And I can almost promise you can fight harder than a lot of people who are going to have no choice except to fight."

Zalan breathes in, then blows it out hard enough that it makes Edaine adjust his hair.

"...I still don't even know what goddamn country I'm being conscripted to fight for," he says.

"Ah! Well. We're in Lytom. In the beneficium of the ninth battalion, though it hasn't really been a battalion in a long time."

Still waiting to know if the 'spider demon' they were trying to summon would have been a sapient creature.
"Hey," Zalan says. "That spider thing you were trying to summon. Was it a thinking being?"

Edaine pauses.

"Well, no," he says. "Not if I understand your meaning. I've never attempted this before, but it's supposed to be like an animal. Or, not even like an animal. Like... weather, with emotions. Like a nightmare. Impulses. A terror, made from terror."

"I'm not joyful about what I aimed to do, but not for the reason you ask," he continues. "Those things aren't like people. No sir."

Zalan considers this. He slowly relearns the trick of how to close his eyes without the world spinning away.

Adia approaches, lugging a backpack.

"Hey. I tried the locking trick on the atelier but it didn't work."

"Oh... I must have used more of the structure's mana than I realized."

Edaine's nervousness changes in character.

"So... One of the functions of the binding link, between us, is that one can send mana to the other. I'd intended to use this to feed my summon, to keep them present and physical, safely, buuut it can go the other way. I don't suppose you could, ah, help out...?"

"...Is this a test?" Zalan asks.

"Well. Certainly not a prepared one," says Edaine. "Under the circumstances, I have to invent as I go. But. I am curious to discover what, ah, what we can do for one another."

Zalan considers it. Should he try to make himself useful, or put his foot down in some way?

Next thing I know, they'll be riding home on my back.

...That probably would be faster, wouldn't it?
he asks himself. See, that's how it starts.

Nah bro, you can give back rides but only if THEY'RE bound to YOU. I mean, being a horse is demeaning, but the shoulder pikachu is a classic.

This could be a good opportunity to test just how hard they're gonna lean on that binding. Zalan's a mess and has plenty of good reason not to just hand mana over just because the person who has attempted to enslave them is asking nicely.

So object and see what happens. Do we get a persuasive argument or do we get an attempted compulsion? Hell, given we weren't bound in the first place, can we share mana?

The binding is still there since Zalan received instructions through it earlier. From what I understand the inoculation just made it so the binding couldn't compel him to follow the instructions. And I think Zalan should put off tests until he's had some serious sleep and isn't in an area where monster attacks can happen.

[X] State that you're not willing to give up your mana without a very good reason or a direct order, as you don't have much to spare right now. If they provide either, share your mana.

Reasonable, if true.
I admit I'm getting less inclined to plan "rip his head off". Still not happy and still not inclined to help in their war without substantial compensation, but no longer inclined to murder.

Zalan considers it. Should he try to make himself useful, or put his foot down in some way?
[X] "Say please." If he does, give mana.

[X] I'm going to say help him. I mean you are supposed to be bound so not helping might set off some red flags. Though you yourself aren't at 100% so just do the bare minimum both to keep some surprises up your sleeve and to not exhaust yourself to much.

I admit I'm getting less inclined to plan "rip his head off". Still not happy and still not inclined to help in their war without substantial compensation, but no longer inclined to murder.

I completely disagree.

[X] You'd already exchanged names/charades when he tried to mindrape-enslave you, so the "I totally didn't expect you to be a person" excuse hardly holds water. Personally I'd have killed him the instant I was out of the cage, but at the very least, given you have the "surprise, I'm immune to being mindraped" card up your metaphorical sleeve, you should try and test the boundaries.

[x] "Say Please". Cooperate so long as they treat you with dignity.
[x] Be careful with how much mana you give at once, and how fast.

[X] Explain to some degree the current set of magical medical issues you have been trying to hide, because the last thing any of you need is for this to mess up and give the fox mage your hangover.

Zalan isn't exactly in the best of condition, or thought space, or really anything at the moment. I'm not sure the last time he slept actually counts as genuine sleep for the purpose of recovery, and he woke up with a hangover so bad that he was still connected to a building that is now in another universe.
I genuinely think it is safer for everyone for that test to wait until after a good night's sleep, even if it leaves the summoning building open to others.

[X] Wait, are you saying that we need to try this to close off the place you got me from?!?

[X]Put your foot down. Make him 'try to compel you. You have no mana to spare, you just saw your world die. You got kidnapped to an alien world and clapped in shackles to fight as a slave soldier. You need sleep. They can make their own fire.

Perhaps it will show you what kind of person he truly is.

[X] Definitely figure out if you can give him mana, or if the innocculation blocks or filters that functionality. If you can't (or decide not to) maybe hint that the binding is shoddy? It might be better to come to an understanding here with these dorks rather than wait to reveal your freedom in the middle of a population center

[x] He wants a Mana Transfer? Well Zalan needs a bed. Get Edaine to prepare adequate sleeping quarters for your size and then some because of course, Zalan won't be the only one doing the mana tranfer in it. Ask if Adira wants in on the transfer. Remember to take off your clothes- the more skin, the better the transfer.

[x]Cooperate so long as they treat you with dignity.
--[x] 'I don't suppose you could, ah, help out...?' may not be the most eloquent way to say it, but it is close enough to to a proper please (for now)
--[x] "Ok, just give me that little while. I already feel terrible and sudden loss of mana could make it worse". Then calmly start to breath more and more deeply, gaining more and more mana, both filling your reserves up and letting a growing trickle flow through the bond.

[...]
Perhaps it will show you what kind of person he truly is.
Yes, but in Zalans current state I'm not sure he would be able to deal with getting an answer he doesn't like. When just sitting is challenging neither fight nor flight seem very good options.

If you put a [] with the letter x in it before your suggestion, the forum software will recognize it as a vote, helping Ralson keep an overview of the different suggestions

"Under the circumstances, I have to invent as I go. But. I am curious to discover what, ah, what we can do for one another."
[X] "Really? It's only been what I can do for you. You haven't even mentioned trying to do anything for me."

This is a delightful face. Such fluff. Such consternation.

In theory, Zalan can use it for lots of stuff it was never designed for. In theory he could even use it on wild spirits. But a sapient eidolon? There's no way, right...?

"Hacking" a sapient eidolon strikes me as an act on par with the binding ritual for how invasive and horrific it would be for the eidolon, if creating them is more akin to raising a child.

I'd rather Zalan not go rooting around in someone's brain functions if it can be helped.

The collector network back home wasn't just meant as a convenient power source. It was built to end the Mythic Age.

The Mythic Age sounds darker every time it comes up. That kind of name would have been given to a time of great wonders and heroic feats by human historians. The dragons using it for a period that sounds more and more like an ongoing apocalypse is both fascinating and saddening.

Fulcrum's ambient mana levels must have been crazy high before the collectors went up. Might be why dragons are so heavily mana-based as lifeforms.

God how he wants to see Edaine march right back in there and come out with Tieran-Sha in tow.

Ow my heart. Hang in there Zal. Your man's out there somewhere and I'll bet he's just as worried about you.
