Crafts are kinda shit in this setup. They're about as likely to hit as a normal attack and they're basically as nonrenewable as the EP needed for Arts.
Unless the GM actually went through with changing how crafts work there's not much point in using them outside Boss fights.
And I say this as someone who uses crafts way more than I should in the trails games.
I meant to answer this but got distracted and forgot. For the rest of this chapter, or at least until after the upcoming miniboss, there will be some tweaks to CP generation and Craft mechanics:
Normal attacks generate 10+half damage worth of CP, while Arts and Crafts generate CP equal to half damage. Restocking Craft charges now cost 50 CP and can be done as a free action in combat. I also want to try to give Crafts a roll modifier to hit equal to 5*User's Speed.
All these tweaks are subject to change depending on how it works out.
Just to be sure we're on the same page, does this restock just one charge of one craft, all charges of one craft, or all charges for all of our crafts?
Just to be sure we're on the same page, does this restock just one charge of one craft, all charges of one craft, or all charges for all of our crafts?
Is this in play, or are you just considering adding it?
It gives a much needed boost to craft hit chance, but much further down the line it could unbalance things if speed ever increases.
Speaking of Crafts, now that I have slept on it I think I will try using the Speed modifier for the time being. Speed won't increase very often, so it shouldn't get too out of hand.
Ofc, as time goes on I might have to incorporate the difference in the attacker and the target's Speed Stat. Still considering the details.

[X] Stick to normal Attacks for future turns.
This is probably the best plan for now. Since Rean's busy, Laura is our only front-liner so it'd be nice to keep an eye on her. Since we're at about 1/4th CP, might as well cast an Art instead. Sounds like these are probably wolf-type monsters - they'll likely have high attack, but they shouldn't be resistant to Arts at all. It's also interesting that Kyrie finds the orbal light to be 'itchy.' @Iceblocks Does Kyrie get a similar itchy feeling when using her orbment, or is the 'dosage' too low?

Laura nods over her shoulder as her ARCUS begins to hum, acknowledging Kyrie as the alien forms a combat link with her. Crop Munchers are supposed to be intelligent enough to form social groups, like the ten surrounding them, and perhaps intelligent enough that they understand the anti-monster lamp.
Whatever the case, it is time to receive the charge of the oversized squirrel monsters.

Alisa acts while they approach, skillfully applying an orbal Art that takes out the left flank of Crop Munchers. Shaken by the loss of two fifths of their pack, the remainder tries to swarm them.
The first does…poorly. It tries to leap, but does so too soon. Laura thrusts her greatsword forward, quick as a viper, spearing it through the chest and flicking its crying form off the blade to receive the ones coming up behind it. They nibble and scratch at her when they make it past her sword, with the exception of those who choose Kyrie as their target.
Checking on Kyrie lets the bluette spot another one of those furry monsters try to circle around her. It tries to strike at her legs, but she sidesteps and counter attacks. Her sword transitions from right shoulder to left oar, splitting its head diagonally. An instantly fatal strike.
Left Oar transitions to High Guard, which itself transitions to an overhead blow on one of the Crop Munchers worrying her. Its bisected body hasn't finished falling to the ground before she senses a familiar pulse through the combat link.
A phantom impact in her leg is the first hint of what Kyrie is planning before a kicked Crop Muncher stumbles into its fellow, perfectly lined up with the last one challenging Laura. A solid bar of argent light consumes it a moment later.
The minutia of Arts might escape her, but Kyrie's Arts seem to be to Alisa's what Alisa's Arts are to Laura's.
And that is the end of it. The lamp comes online, but all the Crop Munchers are dead. Those who lurk at the edges of the road, drawn here by the sounds of battle, disperse away from it.
How…Anticlimactic.
A touch of mild discomfort makes itself known through the link, reminding Laura that Kyrie is not human. She doesn't seem to feel anything beyond that, so thinking of her as a monster is clearly wrong…
*
Their next task is to rid the eastern highway of a strong monster, a 'Scary Dinosaur' according to the list that Rean is carrying.
The farmhouse with the carrots that the priest is after is on the way, so they go there first. Whoever is in the backline will have to carry them. The farmers are kind enough to explain what is going on with regards to the monster, supposedly it has been menacing the local ranchers and killed many animals while the Provincial Army does nothing.
It seems to be a theme here in Celdic. Maintaining the roadside Orbal Lamps is supposed to be a duty of the Provincial Army should monsters prevent the local orbal factory from doing it themselves. In Legram at least they could count on Toval, but here…
It is shameful.
*
The keeper of the orbal workshop gifts them a rare Quartz for fixing the lamp: a Detection Quartz. Not only does it find nearby objects, it also boosts an Orbment's output when using Arts.
It sparks a short, if lively debate of who should get it. Alisa, Elliot and Kyrie can make use of it, but only the first two have a free slot in their ARCUS Orbments.
They end up giving it to Alisa, whose Art output almost matches Kyrie now.
*
They find the allegedly Scary Dinosaur resting near the top of a hill overlooking the nearby farms. It looks tough, but nothing insurmountable compared to Class VII Group A.
However…
"Rean?"
Rean, tachi halfway removed from its scabbard, pauses. "Hm? Yes Laura?"
She brandishes her own sword at the monster, which is warily observing the interlopers. "I would like to fight this battle while in a combat link with you, if that is alright with you." There is something she needs to confirm about her classmate.
A look over her shoulder confirms that Alisa and Kyrie are staring at her. "I trust you would voice any objections?"
"S-sure?" He answers, uncertain as he hands the carrots over to Elliot.
Elliot accepts the carrots from him, but stops them when they move to engage. "Wait, hang on! At least let me heal you before you go in! We aren't expecting any more fights today, right?"
Two uses of Tear later, and both her and Kyrie are back to top form.
Forming a combat link with Rean is a sharp contrast with forming one with Kyrie. The alien feels, well, alien, like something unused to have a human body. She shakes her head slowly, banishing the thought. There is an enemy to fight now.
Alisa and Kyrie form a link with each other behind her, forming their backline.
You believe humans would do the thing where they raise their shoulders should they feel the way you feel. Rean smells good, but you can do without for a little while.
Alisa doesn't smell that bad anymore anyway…

Laura's hands tighten on her greatsword. It seems their enemy has realized that they are here to challenge it, for the big lizard monster roars and charges at them.
She allows herself a moment to consider Rean's stance. So far it looks like her suspicions are sound, but one way or the other they will be confirmed today.

Rean goes in first, with her right behind him. He opens the fight with what is definitively a technique of the Eight Leaves One Blade School, cutting into the lizard and staggering it. He follows up with some lesser blows, opening a cut on the monster's chest with the first. His second lesser attack has to be aborted when the monster snaps its teeth at him, forcing him back.
A bright, burning arrow strikes the beast in the neck, dousing it in fire that sadly refuses to stick. Kyrie takes the opportunity to jab the creature in the side with the point atop her Lucerne, but the wound it makes is shallow. If this bothers the oddball, she does not show it. Sadly, Alisa's next arrow sails over the lizard's head as it lowers it to charge Rean.
Its jaws clamp down on his arms, his sword deflected by its teeth, and shakes him wildly before slamming Rean to the ground. The boy tries to get up before collapsing to his knees, clearly dazed.
She is on the dinosaur before it can take advantage. Putting all her strength into the blow, she carefully aligns the edge of her sword so that it violently shears off some of the beast's natural protection upon striking it. This much is easy, even without the power of the combat link.
Its pained howl intensifies when a black and purple distortion strikes it in the chest, almost bowling it over, but it quickly loses strength and sags down to the ground.

Scary Dinosaur has its Defense reduced by 50%
The injury that the beast inflicted on Rean is still dazing him, so it falls to them to beat it as hard as they can while it is down. Alisa shoots another one of her special arrows, and this time the dinosaur is badly burned. A normal arrow finds its mark, and both times Kyrie follows the combat link's guidance to hammer the prone animal.
Laura does her part by breaking more of its armor. With the beast prone like this, shredding its defenses is a lot easier. But the monster seems to be regaining its faculties-
A change in the atmosphere makes her risk a look behind her. Kyrie has put her ARCUS back on her belt and is holding up her left fist, which crackles with fractal black rays. She splays her fingers, and three light-drinking black darts, long as her arm and at their widest as broad as Laura's sword, appear in the air above her hand.
Kyrie's fingers twitch, and the constructs shoot forward.
The first two lances punch deep holes in the monstrous reptilian before they disintegrate, their energy spent, but the third seems to find purchase in something. It bursts forward, drilling a perfectly round hole through the waking lizard's chest. A small discordant noise echoes through the field as the monster blurs.
And ages.
Decades pass by in seconds: molts explode off its body, teeth and claws fall out as it thrashes in desperation. Its efforts weaken swiftly, until there is nothing but a rapidly degrading skeleton lying in a hide of disturbed soil.
And such is the end of the Scary Dinosaur.

Kyrie tilts her head at the remains. "Strange. The Lance does not usually do this. It must be the Law of Zemuria."
Laura goes to help Rean to his feet, with Elliot rushing to administer healing, while Alisa interrogates their alien classmate.
"Ugh…what happened?" Groans the boy as he blearily opens his eyes. The lacerations on his arms close up as he shifts around, courtesy of Elliot's Arts. "Laura?"
"You got knocked unconscious Rean." She explains gently as she picks him up. He also confirmed a suspicion of hers, but that can wait. "Kyrie knocked it out right afterwards. It didn't last long."
As they walk back towards Kyrie and Alisa, they discover that Kyrie's explanation has taken a turn.
"In the Utterdark I can exist in multiple Whens, everything can, but if you try to exist in too many at once you will disperse. Each hit of the Lance forces the target to exist in more Whens until it breaks down and disperses, making it good against Inchoates, Gnawers, and Reality Leeches. Keeps them away from my Island."
"Er…" Grumbles Alisa while pinning the alien with an unimpressed look. "A what, a what, and a what?"
"Inchoates, Gnawers, and Reality Leeches." Answers Kyrie guilelessly. "They are lesser dwellers of the Utterdark, born from smaller, less stable combinations of Dregs that-"
The alien gets several minutes into an incoherent lecture about the virtues of island-keeping (and the sins of not keeping an island) before Alisa tells her to shut up.
The farmer who gave them the job to kill the Scary Dinosaur sends them off with a whole basket of foodstuffs.

For reasons that you are not entirely clear on, you are now behind one of the stalls in the Trading Place. Trying to make the mouth noises that will make the humans trade Tokens for the plants is…a struggle.
After returning to Celdic you and the others visited the Trading Place, and now the Human that owns the stall is making you do his work for him.
*
Needless to say, you make the fewest sales and bring in the least amount of Value Tokens.
*
After the Hybrid leaves to check up on Group B, Rean and Laura have some sort of fight when you get back to the inn, with the latter walking away angry. You don't really care and go to sleep.
*
Rean and Laura are now friends again. It involves swords.
You still don't really care.
Killing the Reptile Beast got Rean enough Sepith to upgrade Alisa and Laura's ARCUS units, unlocking another slot for each of them.
Alisa and Laura's base EP increases by 50!
Alisa and Laura have unlocked their second Line 1 ARCUS slot!

The Reptile beast also dropped a Quartz that boosts one's durability to physical damage.
But you have no free slots…
Stupid.
While you are fuming about it there is a commotion in the Trading Place over what appears to be two destroyed stalls. The humans involved look familiar, but the local Hive Guard end the dispute before you can remember them.
Your human ears hear Rean talking, which brings your attention to the world around you.
Apparently Group A is splitting up before investigating the Trading Place disturbance.
That fight went way faster than expected, but I am actually happy it did. I've wanted to describe the appearance and effects of the Utterdark Lance from the moment I put it as one of Utterdark!Kyrie's Crafts. Not to mention the Utterdark lore connected to it.
I am also clarifying something wrt Status effects and Critical hits: All Status effects except Deathblow, Petrify, and Vanish are automatically applied during a Critical Hit. The exceptions merely have their DC doubled. Bosses and minibosses get to factor in their Susceptibility. Note that not even a Critical can overcome 0 Susceptibility.
So we're definitely the best burst dps of Class VII right now, but I'm pretty sure our true calling is boss murder. At least until we face one that resists faint. Then we fall behind Laura.
Gonna roll for which option since I don't have a strong preference. Both can give interesting scenes for our MC and neither really stands out.
Won't be continuing this. Those rough weeks at work during the winter made me lose my rythm and now working on this quest just feels like an exhausting chore.
I will post a light plot outline, mechanics that were not introduced, Utterdark!Kyrie's true form, and the paths not taken later.
Aw, I was really liking this quest, but if the QM isn't into running it, the quest as a whole would just suffer. And for questions, would there have been a plot point where another invader appeared from one of the realms we didn't choose?
Aw, I was really liking this quest, but if the QM isn't into running it, the quest as a whole would just suffer. And for questions, would there have been a plot point where another invader appeared from one of the realms we didn't choose?
Outside McBurn? No. He would be the rival character from the moment Kyrie regained her true form. Except for Fire!Kyrie because they come from the same Realm (not the same species).
Beyond that the image I had in mind when thinking of Tenbelteb was the lava castle in Dark Souls 2, Ensisigkyu would be Subnautica but eldritch, and the Utterdark being inspired by the final stage of the first Kingdom Hearts. That's the inspirations I am aware of.
@Iceblocks, I totally understand what you mean. My only attempt at running a quest so far went pretty poorly; I was super-hyped at the beginning, but I just lost the motivation for it after a few weeks of little user interest and gave up. I'm hoping to have a more successful showing someday soon, but I really don't know. It's kind of a shame - Trails is probably my favorite video game series bar none, and I was really happy to finally find a quest on it. Like I said though, I don't fault you for anything. Hopefully work gets better soon for you, and I wish you luck in your future endeavors.
