10: Reluctant Acceptance

You meet her gaze for a moment, before sighing.

"No, I'll accept." It wasn't like you'd break the law, and the idea of fighting a person you just sacrificed so much to save...

Well, it would be just too depressing.

Shinobu turns and gives you a smile. A genuine smile, so open and purely happy that it shocks you.

You're not shocked because she looks amazingly happy. You've seen lots of people look just as happy as she does. Your sisters get the same look on their faces every time they go out to play heroes.

It's just that now you've seen her happy, you realize how miserable she's been nearly the entire time she's been talking to you.

Her smile lasts only for a few moments before her good mood seems to drain away, leaving only a more reserved grin. She opens her mouth to speak, but you hold up a hand, interrupting whatever she was about to say.

"I'm going to hold off on agreeing to work with you, though. I probably need to fill out a bunch of paperwork and talk to people first, right?"

From your parents, you knew that when dealing with the government and bureaucracy that it was best to do things properly. You mother had confided that the main reason your father's career had stalled was his tendency to just jump the gun and ignore policy from time to time.

Shinobu closes her mouth, and immediately puffs her cheeks out as she begins to pout.

The supposedly strongest contractor in the world is pouting at you because you wont work with her.

"Oho, Araragi-san. Looks like you're more popular with the ladies than I thought! Trying to win her by playing hard to get? Surprisingly advanced for someone like you! I'm amazed!" Hachikuji's laughter filled voice seems to come from nowhere, and everywhere at the same time. You try to ignore it, since you're pretty sure no one else can hear her.

That's how those things are supposed to work. She's just in your brain somewhere, right?

If others could hear and see her, how were you going to explain a gradeschooler constantly following you around?

"I suppose that is for the best." Shinobu says, interrupting your thoughts. "They were quite cross with me already when I asked for them to send officers so late at night. They wont be any happier when they've discovered that I have been weakened."

"You called for backup? How long until they get here?" you ask.

Shinobu shrugs. "I am not sure, a few hours? They need to fly in, since Mitakihara doesn't have a National Police Headquarters."

You nodded as you mulled this information over. Despite the recent growth and development, Mitakihara was still a relatively minor city in Japan, having been formed out of a merger between Nakamura and Nishitosa only last year.

"So Shinobu-san, I have a question," you tentatively ask. You don't miss the look of slight annoyance she has when you call her Shinobu, but she doesn't say anything and merely nods for you to continue. "If I had refused, and wanted to go work in a coffee shop or be a salaryman instead, how would you have responded?"

"Koyomi" she says flatly "were thou not paying attention? The penalty for avoiding the draft is summary execution." She pauses, dramatically putting a finger to her cheek as if she had just thought of something. "Though I am weakened. Thou would probably manage to escape if we fought," she explains.

You blink at her. Was she...?

"Oh! That reminds me." she adds, before snapping her fingers. The sword she had given you vanishes in a moment, appearing to evaporate into thin air.

If you had tried to attack her, would she have done that to catch you off guard? Or was she making sure you had a chance...

"Watching you two talk is hilarious and all, but can we go somewhere else?" Episode speaks up from where he is sitting on the ground. "I don't wanna be arrested and, uh..." he trails off, glancing at the bodies in the street, before quickly look away again.

When had you forgotten about them?

"True, we can not stay here. Koyomi, thou art local. Where should we go until the officers arrive?" Shinobu asks.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG
Actually yeah, the fire sisters can be pacified pretty easily either by playing the brocon card or using their hero-complex against them.

And they took it from their parents and seeing as the parents are from the force Shinobu can flex that political weight around and we would be scot-free in the worst of cases.

How many important meetings happen at that park? A lot that's for sure. It's be interesting.

So happy I discovered this. Three of my favorite shows in one quest.

Is the existence of contractors public knowledge? If not, we might want to avoid home until we have a cover established.

Considering Araragi had no idea about Contractors, and has been informed it is against the law to tell anyone about contractors...

But anyway, it's too late! VOTES LOCKED!

...mostly because I've been outlining the next three updates in my head all together like, and if y'all suddenly decided to be prudent I'd have to start all over again.

Also, welcome to the quest. I'm glad that you've enjoyed it! Hopefully there will be an update in a day or so (but I'm not making promises).

I have learned my lesson. Even speaking of the next update is life's invitation to kick the crap out of me. These past two months have been difficult. Please forgive me for the lack of updates.

-[] Your home

You stand, thinking for a moment, but your thoughts are sluggish. It must be nearly 3:00am, and you just feel drained.

You just want to go home, but it isn't like you could take them there.

That's when a thought strikes you.

Why can't you?

Episode is just a normal boy now. It would be no different than back in Middle School, when you had friends come over.

Shinobu may be a girl, but that wasn't that strange for a highschool boy, right? You weren't even doing anything, just providing a place for someone with nowhere else to go.

She was with the police too. So it should be fine.

Part of you realizes that you're just rationalizing this all to yourself, but you are just too tired to care.

"Let's just go back to my place," you say with a sigh.

"Oh, a place to bring girls to. I should have known thou were that type! I am a little bit impressed that thou has not died living alone, though." Shinobu says, feigning offense. It's clear that she's joking with that self-satisfied grin she had on her face.

You shake your head. "No need to be impressed. I'm still under my parent's care."

"Eh?! Your parents?" she says, staring at you. You shrug.

"Isn't that normal for a highschooler?"

Wouldn't most people assume a highschooler lived with his parents?

"Also, you're the first girl I'll have brought over since I was in elementary school," you feel compelled to add.

Why did everyone assume the worst about you?

"Oh." Shinobu says, apparently at a loss for words at the moment. She crosses her arms, and turns away from you, making a show of suddenly being interested in the night sky.

Did you say something wrong? It's difficult to concentrate when you're so exhausted.

You idly wonder how many days it will be until you can get a good night's sleep.

Your sisters certainly wont let you sleep in.

You feel like there's something you're missing in that train of thought, but you can't think of it.

It's probably not that important.

"Well, let's get going" you say tiredly, as you motion for your companions to follow you.

---

No one said anything as you collected your bag with your purchases and began the long walk back to your house.

Normally, such a long silence would have been awkward, but it seemed everyone was too tired to do much more than walk, pausing once or twice to avoid people who were out and about this late at night.

You had made it about a half of the way home before conversation resumed.

"Is there anything we should know before we get there?" Shinobu asks.

"What do you mean?" you reply. You feel that if you were more awake you wouldn't have needed to ask. Why were you out so late again?

Ah, right, you had made a new friend today. Were these two your friends as well now?

You did kill for them.

It certainly explained why you were so weak now. The you of a week ago would have been safely ensconced in his covers by now, happily sleeping.

You almost missed what Shinobu said next. Your concentration was definitely shot to pieces.

"Any peculiar family situations? Will we need to talk to anyone? And where are we to stay?" she asks, not looking at you but constantly turning her head to keep on the lookout for anyone who might cross your path.

Where did she get so much energy from?

"No, my family is pretty normal. Two parents who both work, two little sisters who run around, playing. We have a house, but that's the rule rather than the exception around here. Everyone should be asleep, and everyone can stay in my room, so no one might even notice that you were there." you explain.

"That would be best," Shinobu agrees, "Though, should thou not wish to introduce me to thy parents, Koyomi?"

It takes you a moment to parse her archaic way of speaking.

She's teasing you again.

You don't dignify it with a response, merely shaking your head.

Rather, you are too tired to do anything else.

You focus on putting one foot in front of the other, and after what seems an eternity, you realize that you've arrived.

You relax slightly as you quickly unlock the door, and open it for your companions, who after a moment's hesitation walk in without a word.

You follow, locking the door behind you, and murmuring a "I'm home" to the dark and slumbering house.

"Well, I'll just show you to my room then," you whisper, eager to fall into your bed's soft embrace.

"Uh..." Episode gives you a doubting look, as he seems to be thinking on what to say to you.

"Koyomi, perhaps we should clean up before hand?" Shinobu says, gesturing at you.

Looking down you notice that you are covered in dried blood.

A quick glance to your companions confirms that they too have evidence of tonight events on them, though not as...thoroughly as you do.

Ah, something important I wanted to say. While this is still the prologue, so nothing terri-bad will happen tonight, this is the first decision that will heavily change his morning depending on what is chosen, and the prologue is over as soon as you wake up...

Choose wisely.

We're going to be quite tired in the morning, but it's better than leaving blood stained clothes everywhere.

12: Cleaning up
AN: I've been struggling with this update since the 21st of May. I've rewritten the ending bits so many times but I can't get the joking/teasing tone right. Well, to heck with it. Let's just keep moving forward. Also, happy birthday to Gahara-san.

12: Cleaning Up

"R-right, we should clean up" you find yourself saying.

You stand awkwardly for a moment with Shinobu and Episode staring expectantly at you, before you start walking into the house, motioning for them to follow.

There was something you wanted to know. Something that you had realized right away when Shinobu had pointed out how messy you were.

You didn't dare ask, but since when had you stopped caring about being covered in blood?

Was this because you were a contractor, or had you always been this way?

You were afraid of the answer.

You lead them through your house to a small room. There was a sink with a mirror and shelves laden with various hygiene products next to a hamper and laundry machine along one wall. Along the other leaned an ironing board and sat a basket of freshly washed laundry that had yet to be put away.

"The bath is through there," you said, pointing to the door. "Shinobu-san, you can go first and I'll find us some clothes," you gesture to the laundry.

There were definitely advantages to having both of your parents working. If it had been put away immediately, it would have been a pain trying to sneak into your sister's room to steal some of their clothes.

Somehow you feel that you narrowly missed being caught in an embarrassing situation.

"Thanks, Koyomi. I will not take long," she says appreciatively before heading into the bath.

You are mildly surprised that she didn't take the opportunity to tease you more.

Then again, even she might be tired.

She had almost died tonight.

Actually, shouldn't she have been more shaken up about that?

She had seemed really grateful, but had moved on from that pretty quickly.

Maybe she was just moody?

You decide it isn't worth spending too much time thinking over it, particularly when you're this tired.

You root through the laundry taking care not to get any blood on it, pulling some of your sister Karen's pajamas out.

Even though she was your little sister, she was already taller than you were, so you thought they would fit Shinobu.

Right now, Shinobu was about your height, so your sisters clothes would have to do.

Though her dress was clearly made for a much taller woman. Would she change sizes while she slept? She did say something about her current height being temporary.

You sigh, shaking your head. Nothing you can do if that happens.

After a minute, you select some of Karen's clothes for tomorrow for Shinobu, and with much more reluctance, some of your sister's underwear.

While you appreciate girl's underwear as much as the next teenage boy, your sister's were just entirely unappealing.

Or rather, there was nothing wrong with the underwear, but belonging to your sister ruined them.

Though, if Shinobu was wearing them, would they still be your sister's underwear; as appealing as a washcloth, or would they somehow transform, like how the Class Rep's-

No, you weren't going to think about that.

Episode is a bit harder to find clothes for, since he's taller than you are and your father...well you wouldn't touch his clothes even if they might fit Episode.

You settle on some shorts and a baggy t-shirt that had always been too big for you.

You decline to lend him some underwear.

He only has a little blood on him, his own should be fine.

You turn to tell him, only to find him sitting against the wall, fast asleep.

Was he being carefree, or was he also really tired?

You make a quick run to the kitchen to grab a trashbag to throw the dirty clothes in, before you return and sit down next to Episode.

Maybe a cat nap will do you good?

Of course, the door to the bath slides open as soon as you close your eyes.

When you open them you are greeted by the sight of Shinobu standing in the doorway, stretching her arms above her head.

"Ahhhh! I feel so much better!" she exclaims as she arches her back. You continue to gape at her as you feel your cheeks flushing.

It's not that she's acting strange. It's that you have no idea how the flimsy towel she's wrapped around herself hasn't fallen off!

"Don't you have any common sense?! A girl should be more careful!' You find yourself shouting to hide your embarassment.

When did you become a tsundere character?

"Ka ka ka," she laughs in an affected style as she leisurely waltzes into the room. "Such a cheeky subordinate, lusting after his superior. I'll be gracious and let your sexual harassment slide, this time," she says, grinning as she looks around the room.

"Sexual Harassment?! You should be the one worried about being reported for sexual harassment!" you find yourself shouting and you point accusingly at her.

"What's going on?" Episode mumbles sleepily from beside you.

"Ah, such an inconsiderate subordinate. People are trying to sleep, Koyomi, you should not be shouting," Shinobu chides as she fishes a hairdryer out of your family's mess of hygiene products.

"Ah, I'm sorr-wait! Since when was it decided that I'm your subordinate?" You ask.

Didn't you tell her earlier that you were keeping your options open?

Shinobu makes a shooing motion towards the bath, clearly ignoring your protest. "Do not keep me waiting long. It is rude to make a lady wait."

You feel like you should be able to make a retort of some kind, but your sleepy mind fails to rise to the challenge. In the end, after only a moment or two, you turn and walk into the shower, Episode following close behind you.

You clean yourself quickly, while reflecting on just how you were supposed to deal with Shinobu.

She reminded you of your sisters, but unlike them you couldn't simply roughhouse with her if she got too pushy.

It doesn't take you long, and you're finished before Episode despite being much more filthy since he managed to get soap in his eyes.

You dry yourself off, when you hear something that makes your heart stop.

Shinobu is talking to someone.

No, that's not it. Shinobu is talking with someone.

Not on the phone. Here. In person.

Rushing over, you slide open the door to find Shinobu, alone and dressed.

"Ah, Koyomi! I just met your cute little sister. She seemed pretty shocked that thou brought a girlfriend home," she mentions casually, not looking you in the eyes.

She met your sister...and introduced herself as your girlfriend.

"Though luckily she was so surprised that she did not notice I was wearing her clothes..." she trails off.

How do you feel?

[] Upset. Couldn't she have waited for you to explain things?! Your sisters were going to be even more unbearable now, and they might tell your parents...
