@Nevill Akemi is a guy by the way.

"Make character IC who's bit of a prettyboy sort and due to parents, has a girls name, and so is entirely too used to being mistaken for a girl / 'isn't that a girls name'. Person OOC mistakes them for a girl."

It will never end for akemi will it :V

Prologue 011- Lessons of the past
Talk with Jintsuu.
-About herself.
-About the world in general.

It's just past noon of the second day of your journey back to Japan, and it's passed without incident so far. You should make port tomorrow. Standing at your normal point at the bow of the ship, you finish your cigarette, and head back inside. You've spent the morning checking the secrecy forms, making sure that everything's in order. But with nothing else to do for now, you decide to find Jintsuu. It's not that large a boat, so there aren't many places she could be, but given the time, she's probably at the galley. Even if she isn't, you could use something to eat as well.

As you enter the galley, you see Akemi and Jintsuu seated off to one side, a few sailors clearly sitting close enough to not be too obviously paying attention to Jintsuu, who is currently devouring a tray of food. As you watch, she finishes off the tray, before going and getting another set of food. Getting yourself a tray of food, which is nothing special, just some standard naval fare, you sit yourself with them, Akemi waving to you as you approach.

Now you're closer, you can see that there really is vigour in how Jintsuu's eating; despite the rather basic fare, she is quite enjoying the food here.

"You seem to be taking to being human quite well if this is any indication" you say, starting to eat your own food.

"Ah- yes Asuka, I believe I am. My wounds have healed nicely thanks to Akemis aid, although I have been told that it was a faster recovery than normal."
Now that she's mentioned it, you do notice that there's not actually any sign on Jintsuu of the wounds she had yesterday, or even anything like a treatment.

"A bit faster is one way of putting it." Akemi interjects, resting against the wall. "I've never seen just wrapping a bandage on make an inch deep cut seal up like it was never there. The really strnge part had to be how by the time I was done, the dents on your armour had vanished, when I'd never touched them. You sure you needed any patching up?"

"Well, officer Ito, I had obtained those injuries earlier, but it was only when you tended to me that they healed."

Now that is something else. There's a couple of ideas on what exactly that could mean floating around your head, but nothing concrete just yet.
"What else have you been doing then Jintsuu? You're not having any issue with eating at the very least." You ask. "I was almost worried you'd want to eat coal or oil, but it's good that you're managing just fine with food."

"Yes, this is quite good," Jintsuu pauses, blushing for a moment. "Even if officer Ito had to inform me that the empty feeling I reported was hunger, and not some lingering injury from the combat... Also that I had been asleep when I voiced my concern over how several hours seemed to have passed in a moment. I know what they are on some level... it's just that this is my first time feeling them"

"She'd passed out at her desk looking at some pages on a borrowed laptop I'd shown her how to use" Akemi says, as Jintsuu blushes some more.

"Well, it's your first day being human. You've picked things up quite well all things considered, given how it takes us years to learn how this works. What were you reading about?" Akemi'd have been nearby yes, and the way Jintsuu is really doesn't give us much reason to doubt her, but giving her internet access this early? Still, you can at least be glad for content filters. Given how Jintsuu's not that familiar with eating and sleeping, you don't want to think about what it would be like having to explain other bodily functions to her like this.

"History. This world is strange to me. There are so many things that seem like miracles to me-" Jintsuu says animatedly, eyes almost sparkling as her hands gesture excitedly. "Even that 'laptop'? officer Ito lent me is incredible. Something so small doing so much- pictures of faraway places, so many other marvels that have been created- there's nothing like it I have ever seen before! Asuka, you live in such a wonderful world- please, if there are any places you can show me I would not know of, please do so. Your neon cities, your histories- I even have a sister ship, another bearing my name. There is so much I wish to see!"

You smile, Jintsuu's cheer proving somewhat infectious. "I guess it would seem like that to you. It's been many years after all. It just seems normal to me, as it's all I've really known. I'll see what I can do to show you more of our world though. I think the world is better than how it used to be though. We just keep making progress bit by bit. Make the world better how we can. And while we may still fight, until the abyssals started to show up, we had been fighting less and less."

"Yes... my war was the last of the 'great' wars." Jintsuu says, her face falling. "I... read much on that war. What we did. So many things I didn't know about. Some I wish I didn't know about. How we lost."

Jintsuu stares at the floor, and as she wipes a glove across her face, you see the back of it comes away damp. "I'd just thought it might have helped me learn more about myself, let me remember more. But some of the things we did there..."

You...

The idea of Asuka/Jintsuu is growing on me.

"Hey, come on- don't be like that. Look, come with me, here isn't the place to talk about anything like this. I know a better place if you'd like to talk about this more" You say, reaching out to Jintsuu.

She nods wordlessly, and follows you outside. The pair of you stand at the bow of the ship, in your usual spot. It's a relaxing enough place, tucked away behind a bit of machinery, leaving you out of sight of the bridge, and out of some of the wind, making it the perfect place for a smoke.

"I can probably imagine how you must have felt," you say, as the two of you look out over the ocean. "You really are a dutiful girl aren't you Jintsuu. I saw what you did yesterday, how you kept forcing yourself to be proper, even when it was causing you pain. You really do take pride in yourself as a warship don't you?"

Jintsuu says nothing for a moment, then nods. "It was the first thing that I knew. Learning of some of the things the country that I fought for had done... I do not know why I felt such a way, but I felt... betrayed. I feel that is the word. To learn that the country I fought for had done such a thing"

"I'd feel the same, if I knew that the country I fought for had done awful things in secret. But how could you have known? You were still nothing more than steel at that point in time- you, and all the people who fought on you, there's no way you could have known. Nobody could have at that time. Does the fact that it happened change the reasons you fought for?" you ask, turning to face her.

There's another pause as Jintsuu thinks your words over. "No... I do not believe it does. And it does not change the fact that from the moment I saw your abyssals, I knew them to be my enemy. Thank you Asuka. I feel somewhat better now. It was just something that hit me below the waterline."

Jintsuu wipes her eyes, turning to face the horizon as you light a cigarette. She seems better now, although if that matter is as sensitive a thing as it seems to be for her, you doubt that she'll never think on the matter again. But it's fine for the moment, and maybe she'll figure things out for good once she's come to terms with being human more.

"Don't mention it; I did say I panned on looking after you Jintsuu, and as far as I'm, concerned, this counts as that." You light your cigarette, offering one to Jintsuu as well. "You're technically older than me, this should be fine- want one?"

She takes it, and mimics your actions to light it, tries to take a drag, before having a coughing fit, the cigarette falling to the ground.

"Well, smoking's not for everyone. Maybe it needs a bit of oil or coal for you to like it?" You tease, trying to lighten the mood a little from the previous topic. You finish your own smoke, and the two of you stay outside for a bit longer, talking about nothing in particular, just a few more of the things Jintsuu would like to see in the modern world. After a while, you have to go inside, largely because you never got the chance to have your lunch. But as you leave the deck, you see the first hints of land on the horizon. Of home.

Prologue end

Interlude 1- Birth

In the depths of the ocean, life grows, bringing death with it. A new reef grows on this shipwreck, a reef of black metal and pale flesh; eyes glowi with green light, while fanged mouths that vomit lifeless, choking brine into the ocean, their eyes watching as it pools around them. From time to time, a piece of the reef shakes, thrashing about before breaking free to join the pack of bestial abyssals that swim around the reef, feasting on any fish stupid enough to be lured by the lights here.

Within the hulk, wisps of brine snake through flooded corridors and abandoned cabins making their way to the bottom of the ship. Here in one cabin lies a stack of bones, piled unceremoniously against the wall from how they fell, right on the edge of where the brine has gathered within this ship. The wreck shakes as a fresh abyssal breaks free from the reef above, and another bone falls from its resting place into the brine.

As if in response to this, a blue light begins to glow within this gathered pool of brine, faint at first, but steadily glowing brighter. An arm reaches up from within pool, shakily grasping its edge, before a girl pulls herself up and out of the brine, her movements uncertain. Her single visible eye is the source of the blue glow that illuminates this place; the other is covered by the patch of jagged metal that covers her forehead. Similar patches of metal dot her body, the black iron seeming to protrude from underneath her pale, nearly translucent skin. She is dressed in a dark grey top, reminiscent of some form of uniform, with steel teeth jutting up from her collar, while her legs are encased in tightly fitting bands of iron. From her back, a thick, tail-like cord of grey muscle sticks out, before splitting in two, each branch ending in the black metal of a three-barrelled gun turret.

The girl reaches out to the pile of bones that rest by the brines edge, tentatively picking up the skull. She caresses it for a moment, before crushing it in her hands, a newfound purpose to her motions as she swims out of the wreck, bubbles flooding from her mouth as she calls to the bestial abyssals waiting outside. A pack gathers around her, and they begin to swim up towards the surface of the ocean.

Welp. We have CV problems, and the odds are quite stacked against us.

Chapter 1: Home port
Chapter 1: Home port
You stand on the bridge as the Fuyuzuki sails towards the Yokosuka naval base, on your final approach to the base. The cityscape on the coast is much the same as it has been for the past year; construction work is still ongoing on fortifying it with a seawall, construction work either clearing away the rubble from abyssal shelling, or rebuilding something that was previously there. Other plots of land just lie empty, their owners deciding that moving inland was the safer option. There's more of them there than you remember there being last time you made this trip. As you draw closer to the base, you catch sight of the coastal defences; lining both banks of the coast here are a wide array of bunkers and fortified gun batteries, with armoured vehicles stationed nearby; the last line of defence before the naval base proper if any abyssal was to try and strike at Tokyo itself. Jintsuu is off to the side, gazing out through the windows at the cityscape.

You're hailed by the base, and are directed away from the main docks, to a smaller docking point off to the side. You don't remember this being here the last time. It leads to a fenced off area away from the rest of the base, several buildings at the end of a path nearby. Waiting at the base of the jetty is an old man in uniform, white hair covered by a cap, and a beard, leaning on a cane. As you leave the ship, you recognise him from passing mention of naval history; Admiral Tenpei Fujimura; he'd once been known for his role in stopping piracy, and had come out of retirement in response to the abyssal threat. He had been one of the people who was involved in planning the firebreak system to begin with.

He nods to you as you, Jintsuu and Akemi disembark, waiting for you to approach. You pause as you face him, and salute, Jintsuu and Akemi following you.

"So... this is the girl you mentioned?" He asks, his voice slow and deliberate. "Tell me girl, what is your name?"

"Jintsuu sir!" she replies, still maintaining her salute.

Tenpei hmms to himself for a moment. "Well then, show me what else you can do. Bring out your guns."

Jintsuu complies, and Tenpei nods to himself as Jintsuu's armaments fold out of nowhere in the manner which you're growing a bit more accustomed to. Something does seem a bit off about this scene though- Tenpei's not really been asking any of the questions you'd expect him to given the situation.

[] You seem surprisingly accepting of this
[] Jintsuu isn't the first

Hrm... do we presume or do we inquire?

I'm gonna go with inquire. He is our superior, after all.

[X] You seem surprisingly accepting of this.

[X] Jintsuu isn't the first

We're not some dense officer who can't see the evidence in front of them. We're sharp and can see the writing on the wall.
