As it becomes clear that the ongoing rabble isn't going to calm down by itself, you sigh. While they are somewhat different, they could at least not do this right in front of you.
"Right!" You bark, getting their attention as the mob begins to calm. "Thaddiis- That. Is. Enough of that- There's still two weeks left before we're heading out, and I intend to do things properly. I can't answer your questions right now because even if you got in order to ask them, I don't know the answers yet. What I do know is that over those weeks, I will be getting to know you better before I choose which two of you I'll be bringing with me and Jintsuu. If you're anything like Jintsuu is, you're all going to want the chance to get out there and fight,but I still have to make sure I'm taking the ones I think will work best for the task we have."
The girls mutter a few apologies and acknowledgements. It feels a bit like you're a teacher at a school right now, even with Aoba and Kiso seeming to be in their early 20s, much like Jintsuu. As some of the girls begin to wander off, Jintsuu comes up to you. "Please accept my apologies for my conduct; I was caught up in the heat of the moment. Also, thank you for choosing me to be part of your new fleet!"
"It's fine- and I think I was always going to take you." You reply, trying to wave it away from that. "Actually, I was thinking of doing a little something to celebrate, and I was wondering if you'd like to join me and Akemi?"
Jintsuu nods eagerly "Yes, I would very much like that Asuka."

I can't recall, since I'm a little bit sick, but were there any capitol ships in the earlier crowd? We're gonna need a battleship or carrier... at least a heavy cruiser if we want to start building a reasonable force.

Main base crowd + Abyssal classification

In the shipgirls who've currently materialised, Aoba is the heaviest as a CA, Kiso and Jintsuu in joint second as CLs. Everyone else (Fubuki, Poi, Akizuki and UraKaze) are all misc DDs.
Fortunately, while Abyssals are classed in a very handwavey way, in that they're generally classed along the lines of "Has offensive / defensive capability roughly equivalent with a ship of X class" for their main forms (Stuff like the razorworms that often accompany them is just classed as a least Abyssal / co-feeder in much the same way you get remoras near sharks depending on who you ask).
But tangent aside, Abyssals that fall into Heavy Cruiser / CA brackets are the heaviest ones that have been sighted.
For now at least; due to rapid decomposition of abyssal samples and how standard doctrine is to engage away from land if possible, data on what types appear is around the only concrete thing people have to look at, and that does show a clear progression in the types of abyssal that appear; at the start, razorworms and similar scavengers + basic DDs were all that appeared, followed by larger bestial forms, then humanoid forms, with the first appearance of a CA type abyssal being around 3 months ago.

Even if I'll admit that Poi tempts me, we should probably start getting to know Jintsuu. I can't help but feel that she's going to end up as the de facto shipgirl squadron field commander, and we need to know how she'll work with us and the others. Given that she was one of Raizou Tanaka's commands, I have high expectations.

"Well let's get to it then. There was a common area on the upper floor of our barracks we can use, as there's barely anyone else here; We shouldn't go off base on impulse like this given all the secrecy." You say as you prepare to head back to said common area when Kiso's voice calls out from behind you
"What, planning a little something are ya?" She says, and you turn to face her as she runs up to you, a bit of a smug grin on her face. Behind her you can see that only Fubuki and Yuudachi are left here; Urakaze and Akizuki having gone off one way, and Aoba very pointedly going the other. Yuudachi's flopped onto Fubuki, seemingly about to fall asleep again. "Tell ya what, I've got some stuff I can bring for the pot if ya let me in on it. That, and I know a couple places that'll deliver that do some pretty good stuff. We gotta deal?"
"Sure, why not." It can't hurt to have a couple more people, and you did say you were planning on getting to know them better for making your choice. "Fubuki, do you and Yuudachi want to join us?"
Fubuki jumps at your offer, startling Yuudachi out of her doze. "Yes commander, it would be a pleasure." She says eagerly, as Yuudachi rubs her eyes, before slapping herself in the face once to try and wake herself up more.
"Oooi? Are we doing something? Suure I'm up for it. Something's always better than nothing after allll." Yuudachis response is still a little sluggish, but her eyes are open again and she seems to be perking up some. With that though, you lead the way into your building and the lounge on the top floor; it's just a couple of low sofas around a table, with a couple other bits around the room, but it's out of the way and empty, so it's a good enough place for you to set up.
Kiso immediately collapses onto the sofa nearest the door, her sword left by the door on the coatrack. Jintsuu sits next to you on on of the other sofas, sitting fairly forwards on it. On the sofa opposite you, Fubuki's also sitting quite upright, while Yuudachi's sat far back, resting her head on the back of the sofa. Akemi's on the 4th sofa arms sprawled out over the backrest. Still, it's getting about the time you should order your food.
"So Kiso, What's the place you're thinking of ordering from like?"
"Hmm, it's a bitta everything- they've got a guy who does western food, decent set of other stuff. Outta luck if you want anything liquid delivered though. Not the best quality stuff says Akizuki, but their thing's more convenience it seems- passable quality, got a bit of everything, does delivery. For the best since dunno what you want and can't go off base without all the paperwork can we. So watcha ordering? I'm thinking of steak, not tried western food that much." Kiso pulls out a phone, tapping away to bring
"Not a bad choice, so long as you make sure it's not too well done" Akemi says, before ordering one for himself. He pauses, giving you a sly grin "I'd suggest you take the same Asuka, but I really don't think you could make the cut."
"Kiso, get them to burn this smartasses steak will you?" You say, flipping Akemi off. "I'll order some Kushiyaki, and pass me the phone when you're done Kiso- I'm not going to make you pay for this after all."
"Arright, yes and yes- Here Jintsuu, have a look and see watcha fancy." Kiso nods, before passing the phone over to Jintsuu. "Just tap and move to scroll about, and hit the button by the thing once you've picked."
Peering over Jintsuu shoulder, you see her tentatively tap at the screen, a little hum of confusion slipping out as she puzzles it out. Reaching over, you give her a couple of pointers, showing her how it works. "See? Like this."
"Ah- thank you Asuka. Now... what should I get..."
"I'm going to have the tempura set Sem- Jintsuu. It's quite nice, so I'd recommend it if you're unsure about what to get." Fubuki calls over.
"Thank you Fubuki. It appears to be quite varied... yes, I shall try this. So it goes like this- one, two." Jintsuu replies, smiling as she successfully manages to add it to the order, before passing the phone to Yuudachi, who eagerly takes it, almost drooling as she does so.
"It's got to be the mixed grill..." She says, excitedly tapping on the phone before passing it back to you to sort out the payment. "There's just so much meeat. I could poibably have it every day..."
As Yuudachi continues to drool over the meat, you start checking over the order. You hide a grin as you see that Kiso did in fact, request one of the steaks to be well done. Meanwhile, as you're entering in the payment details, you hear a knock from the door, coming from quite low down.
"Aha, told ya I'd stuff to bring. Here we go." Kiso hurls herself over the back of the sofa and steps out into the hallway, closing the door behind her. As it closes, you see a brief bit of motion near the floor. A couple of moments later, Kiso returns, carrying a crate of beer, which she dumps on the table, before cracking a can open for herself as she sits down. It's actually quite a good brand.

You place the order, decidin to leave Akemis steak overdone as the bit of payback.
"How did you get that here?" You ask, as Kiso starts on her first can of beer. "I didn't see anyone outside."
"It's-a-sec-ret" Kiso says, winking her visible eye at you. "Still, it's all good to drink this; tastes better than oil, and sure I've not been around that long but this body's sure old enough. And if ya count everything, I'm older than you are."
Akemi raises a finger for a moment, then lowers it with a look of visible confusion. "You sure it works that way?"
Akemi takes a beer for himself, then offers you one. You're not really much of a drinking person. Kinda bad for you in the long run... still, just the one can't hurt, so you take the can and have a sip. It's not that bad actually, quite a light beer. Fubuki and Jintsuu pass on the beer, while Yuudachi gives it a bit of thought, before taking one for herself.
"Just the one drink Yuudachi- I can't really say I know enough about how you work to say where this falls, but at least Kiso looks old enough to drink here." Just one can should be fine; you're here, there's other shipgirls here.
"Fiiiine, be the fun Poiliece Commander." Yuudachi says, taking a light sip, evidently intent on making her one can last.
Still, it's really just time to find something to do while you occupy the time. One thing which catches your eye is a box on some shelving by the door. Going over to look at it, you see there's a bunch of poker chips inside. It's as good a thing as any to pass the time. "Does anyone know where we can get some cards?"
"Oh- I have some, commander." Says Fubuki, pulling the pack out her pocket and passing it to you. You have a quick flick through the deck, and it seems perfectly fine to you. Passing the deck to Akemi to shuffle, since you can't, you start dividing the chips out between you.
"Anyone here know how to play?" You ask, with Kiso the only one who knows the rules. Somehow, you're not surprised. "Okay, here's how it goes..."
One brief explanation later, and you're all ready to get started. Akemi wins the first hand with a pickup from the river, while you'd dropped out early with nothing good in hand. Kiso picks up the second win, with quite a good bluff. The third hand is a tie, you and Jintsuu both having equally good hands.
"So, what's life like here?" You ask as you start the next round, awkwardly flicking through the cards you're dealt. You've at least got the hang of not spilling the cards everywhere over the years.
"Not bad as it goes. Better than most others for where we get to stay and eat. Sure we're stuck on here most the time, but Tenpei's usually alright about letting us off now and then." Kiso says, folding to reveal a hand of absolute trash.
"Yeaaah. I've not been about as long as Kiso has, buuut I'm pretty certain he's a bit soft on us." Yuudachi says as she continues to nurse her beer, raising the stakes some in this hand.
"It feels like the Admiral treats us like grandchildren sometimes- not that I'm opposed to that." Fubuki says, matching Yuudachis raise. She's got a godsawful poker face though.
"Actually, when did all of you start showing up?" Akemi says, as the hand ends in a win for you.
"Yes, I would also be interested in hearing that." Nods Jintsuu, who's been playing fairly honestly so far. You're next to her so cant get as good a look on her poker face, but you'd guess it's about as bad as Fubukis.
"I'm- or was- the last of us to show up. I'd arrived maybe a month back, and Aoba had arrived about a month before." Fubuki says, quickly correcting her little slip.
"Me and Urakaze appoired together maaaybe three months back? Akizuki showed between us and Aoba just sailing around middle of nowhere." Yuudachi yawns, pulling a snack out of her pocket and popping it into her mouth.
"And far as I can tell, I'm the first of us to have shown up, less theres more like us abroad. Been here since just after new years or so. Was a bloody mess when I showed up, since nobody'd seen anything like me before." Kiso chuckles. "Suppose me blasting the wall open when they tried to stick me back in quarantine helped give the message to stop fucking with me like that. Anyone'd get sick of tests if they're stuck in a fucking glass cube."
"Still, glad I stuck with instead of bailing after that; was able to get this back, and see the others show up." Kiso pats the sword resting on the sofa next to her, finishing off her beer and grabbing another. "Not to mention all the Abyssals Ive gotten to fuck up on the way.

Kiso picks up the second win, with quite a good bluff. The third hand is a tie, you and Jintsuu both having equally good hands.
"So, what's life like here?" You ask as you start the next round, awkwardly flicking through the cards you're dealt. You've at least got the hang of not spilling the cards everywhere over the years.
"Not bad as it goes. Better than most others for where we get to stay and eat. Sure we're stuck on here most the time, but Tenpei's usually alright about letting us off now and then." Kiso says, folding to reveal a hand of absolute trash.
"Yeaaah. I've not been about as long as Kiso has, buuut I'm pretty certain he's a bit soft on us." Yuudachi says as she continues to nurse her beer, raising the stakes some in this hand.
"It feels like the Admiral treats us like grandchildren sometimes- not that I'm opposed to that." Fubuki says, matching Yuudachis raise. She's got a godsawful poker face though.
"Actually, when did all of you start showing up?" Akemi says, as the hand ends in a win for you.
"Yes, I would also be interested in hearing that." Nods Jintsuu, who's been playing fairly honestly so far. You're next to her so cant get as good a look on her poker face, but you'd guess it's about as bad as Fubukis.
"I'm- or was- the last of us to show up. I'd arrived maybe a month back, and Aoba had arrived about a month before." Fubuki says, quickly correcting her little slip.
"Me and Urakaze appoired together maaaybe three months back? Akizuki showed between us and Aoba just sailing around middle of nowhere." Yuudachi yawns, pulling a snack out of her pocket and popping it into her mouth.
"And far as I can tell, I'm the first of us to have shown up, less theres more like us abroad. Been here since just after new years or so. Was a bloody mess when I showed up, since nobody'd seen anything like me before." Kiso chuckles. "Suppose me blasting the wall open when they tried to stick me back in quarantine helped give the message to stop fucking with me like that. Anyone'd get sick of tests if they're stuck in a fucking glass cube."
"Still, glad I stuck with instead of bailing after that; was able to get this back, and see the others show up." Kiso pats the sword resting on the sofa next to her, finishing off her beer and grabbing another. "Not to mention all the Abyssals Ive gotten to fuck up on the way.

"Any idea why you were the one who appeared first?" You ask, having another sip of your drink.
"I mean, maybe there's stuff that might be it, but being here's enough for me so never really looked at that." Kiso shrugs, slumping against the backrest of the sofa.
"Around the new years though..." you think for a moment, trying to recall how things were back then, turning to Akemi. "It was a bit after that we had the first sighting of a humanoid abyssal wasn't it?"
"Yeah, we'd only really seen the monster-looking ones by that time. Stuff like the one that almost ate you before Jintsuu saved your ass." Akemi laughs, setting up the next hand
"Yeah, I'd had a look at the footage there. Got balls getting that close to one. But prettyboy and you've got the right of it, was around the time I showed up I first saw a human-looking one. Not that it did it much good." Kiso shrugs
"Still, we don't reallly do much; most of the times we aren't needed to really force a fight. If it's a just the one of them, your outer bases usuaaally take care of the problem. Most other stuff gets taken out from the air. Buuuut, there's been a couple of realllly big forces seen over time, and that's when we all get to go out and tear them apart." Yuudachi bounces in her seat, before leaning forwards and taking her cards
"I think we're all a little excited about how things are going now- if you're being sent out on a more aggressive posting, maybe we'll all start getting to get out more. All of us want to fight the abyssals after all- it's one of the first things we all knew." Fubuki says eagerly.
"Yes- I felt the same way when I woke up and saw them. I just knew that was the case." Jintsuu says earnestly, bowing out of the round again.
"Still, I suppose it makes sense that you wouldn't be deployed too often as is if you're supposed to be sort of a secret." Akemi says, getting a few murmurs of agreement.
It's at this point you get a message that the food's arrived, and you excuse yourself to go pick it out, taking the chance to have a smoke while you walk through the evening base. You take the package from where it was at, exchanging a few words with the soldiers at the gate. Returning to the lounge, you exchange a knowing glance with Kiso as you sit down and start passing out the food.
