Dark Magical Girl Quest

I wonder how many other QMs close the vote, get some sleep and then immediately start second guessing themselves when they wake up. I feel like I should have slapped a difficulty warning on certain options. Not only did you pick the hardest class (death magic is powerful but has high DCs) but also the hardest action (not only do you have to fight off both sides but you need to roll to find the damn things in the first place.)

Also, I didn't come up with spells before hand, I just put two spell trees that sounded cool on each voice. Now that I'm actually trying to think, I feel like Void is too close to Death that I can't differentiate between the two. I'm wondering if I should swap it out for a different idea.

If you think there are aspects of the vote that haven't been communicated clearly, then a revote with more information offered on the options you believe to have not been explained well may be in order for this case, given that most of the things being voted upon are defining for our build going forward. As Randino said, you may want to think things through regarding the spell trees and how they look. If you need time and decide to redo the vote, you could the vote open for more than a day in order to buy yourself some time for thinking upon the mechanics of the quest.

Here's a thought for how to distinguish them.

Death: Manipulation of passage between the binary states of "alive" and "dead." Kill spells, undead minions, speaking with the dead, and so on.

Void: Emulating the omnipresent yet substanceless form of death. Ghost form, teleportation, or remote viewing.

I mean, high DCs is kinda not a huge issue for our particular build. You could have death be about destruction and void be nullification. You could even get a little abstract and have void be able to mute emotions and such. You could also draw your inspiration from the Japanese conception of the void element, though I'm not hugely familiar with that. I'm not hugely opposed to the idea of changing out VOID entirely if you really don't think you can use it.

Well that was a quick influx of advice. I'll stay the course, roll the update and then offer a revote if you fail miserably. I do have some ideas now thanks to this and I'll definitely slap DCs on your actions next time, or give difficulty warnings if there are multiple DCs.

…I see that becoming an apprentice to a grim reaper will not be the we win button we thought it would be.

(At the very least, our magic stat is high enough to at least consider hitting some of those DCs.)

I guess there was some contextual clues that getting the 2 other Miraculite orbs might bring a fight against at least the magical girl but I thought that the evil goons would had been on our side :/

Unfortunately they're not that smart. Their orders are get the shinies, they're gonna get the shinnies.

I voted for the fun build that promised maximum indirect Magical Girl irritation and gave useful magic for both avoiding harm and trashing our enemies with hellfire(Imp), and the eldritch build which at least might have let us try to use spacetime manipulation to dump the mooks on the other side of the river(Eldritch).

while death is minutely better than moon in my opinion, I don't see much appeal when it comes to either. I'm essentially here entirely for the mystery of the missing sister at this point and the possibly interesting teammates.

An Ode to Death
This is going to look scuff since i have no idea how to put image links in sords or how to put them in boxes...*grumble* i got hit with a little bit of inspiration so Im going to make people suffer my writing. You have been warned. (gods i am cringe)

An' ode to Death...

"We zoom in to our narrator"
"Narrator": Ah... welcome. It has been some time since I've had a visitor like yourself. Please, do ignore the mess, with these continuous battles of "Light" and "Darkness" it becomes a bit hard to keep things clean. Oh? You ask what there is to clean? Plenty. *They grab a book* We need to keep things organized around here or everything just falls to CHAOS; ignore the trickster he enjoys messing with everyone. You see, this world is composed of many things, some earthly and material.... some not so much. ORDER, CHAOS, LIGHT, DARKNESS, VOID, LIFE and yes DEATH. This terms are probably known to you, some more than others. In truth, I am quite familiar with the latter most: DEATH. Now, now don't be afraid, death is not our enemy, it has to much to do to consider having enemies. What do you know of death, dear guest? The final breath? The end of tale? Or something more... sinister? Ah yes Death, humanity has defined and redefined this concept since the dawn of thought and civilization.

To those that heave and haw about the thrills, never minding the consequences of taking it to far.... they may consider death as a hunter.... always chasing them.... with no hopes of escape.

To many a historian, a culture, a religion; death comes many, many, shapes and sizes. Perhaps you are a familiar?
Of the pale figure on top a ghostly white horse? Just out of reach... yet always watching.

Of a beast that walks as a man?

Of a lover, scorned and abandoned?

Or perhaps the representation written in stone rather than paper?

Perhaps you seen more modern takes on the elusive figure? Yes... Modern times do have a way of explaining the fantastical of yester years....
Written books, games, shows, they do have a way of changing ones perspective of many concepts, death is no exception.
Perhaps they are a kind individual, someone you can talk to? Just going on throughout their day and appearing when most needed?

Hmm.. I suppose many could become fascinated with the end if they looked more approachable?

Or do they fear the unknown, seeing the end as a horrific monster?

Hmmm.... to be honest, I don't think really matters. No matter the shape, form, history or perception, there are some universal truths to death. They are the most hated being, yet the most caring. Quite the Oxymoron, no? You see, that is because at their core, they are the most neutral, they have to be. They don't care if your young or old, Male, Female or Something in between, good or evil, white, black, purple or blue. They don't care if the end was violent or was calm or if you were a king or a pauper. Death comes for all. Human, animal, plant, spirit or a god. They all meet the same individual. Mind you that can be tested and challenged, but it is standard. Death is what we will all see in the end, when the final drop of sand in time hourglass falls, when space collapses into nothing, when darkness can no longer grasp at anything, when light cannot shelter others no longer... when life has no more to give. When the all changing adventure, party... gift of life ends. Death will pick up the mess, close all the books, see to his guests, grabs the key, turns the door and close up after the universe ends... waiting for the next chance to do soo all over again.

Quite winded of a tale is it not? But a necessary if somewhat simplified one. Now then child of tragedy, stubbornness, darkness and magic.
*DEATH Stands up*
DEATH: You have heard what i said... Are you ready to learn more, young Reaper?

Honestly imp is an extremely valid choice. I do like DEATH's WHOLE VIBE though.

Very cool. Enjoy your thread mark.

I wonder how many other QMs close the vote, get some sleep and then immediately start second guessing themselves when they wake up.
I think that's just like a writer/artist thing.

As for the trees, Death could be useful for metaphorically 'killing' things like motion or energy. Stuff like silence, or a kind of metaphorical stillness. Also having entropy effects maybe that could be very good at dealing with non-human targets?

Now... Rex, I think you're going to need to think over a LOT of things. I'd actually say don't even roll for the next update, if this is causing you so much problems. It's clear that you didn't want Death to actually win and didn't realise it, but felt that you needed something like that for whatever reason, presumably tying into the wider narrative. And that's fine, but it's kind of hinting at a big problem that's becoming clear.

Your dialogue and setting creation is great, and I really want to learn more about the setting. You are a good writer able to keep my hyperfixation, with interesting characters, strong themes, and the ability to work with something you weren't expecting. I want to stress that point.

But this entire period of character creation has been stressful. Narrative and Mechanics are clashing hard. This vote ended up being about a series of clashes between what was mechanically effective with regards to personality, and what was interesting in terms of raw aesthetics and story potential. The style was the one thing I thought would be spared that, and it's not the case, it just wasn't alluded to. Which means we likely now have to revote again, and have that same conflict play out, which I'm personally finding incredibly stressful.

And like... You're also leaving way too much stuff up to us instead of just trying to figure out what votes that you would like to write. Take the vote for Kaworu, before this one - you yourself stated that in the event of a tie, you'd have chosen Kaworu purely on the basis that you wanted the Big Good wider setting stuff. Why leave that up to a vote? You clearly wanted to touch on it - you were hoping it got voted on in the very first vote of this quest! Don't just hope we stumble into choosing the options you want to write, figure out what you want to write and give us options based on that!

Something just isn't clicking right now. Maybe it will given time, maybe the people trying to maximise combat effectiveness are right and that will end up bringing everything together, or maybe whatever happens loses a chunk of the playerbase but keeps the rest deeply invested. but I think I need to come in and see the quest in motion instead of getting mad trying to wrench it into a shape i like.

No need to overthink things. I say we shall use our newfound powers to befriend some cute ghost girls. To help with investigation of course :V
Also if we get killed over those gems Death should show us her house.

I'm getting less Sandman Death from our Voice and more Discworld.

Thanks for the big encouraging post. I'm actually touched someone took the time to write it up. And I'm sorry I wound up stressing you out. But I do want to clear something up. I don't include options I don't want. I don't write things that are a burden. If I'm complaining about how a vote went or wondering if I should have done things differently, please don't take it seriously. I'm just venting. Honestly, combinations that surprise me or disrupt my plans are why I keep trying to write quests. It's fun! It pushes me to be creative in new ways. People keep telling me to write what I want but if I wrote only what I think I want, I'd just be writing self indulgent SI fanfic until I died. And I'm pretty damn good at writing self indulgent SI fanfic, if I do say so myself.

So, do I get a little caught up in missed opportunities? Yeah, a little. But then I start thinking about how to make the next vote work and I get excited because I have fresh new ideas to start working on! I'm loving the mystery plot I've got going on and some of the reveals are gonna be great! But I never would have come up with that if you guys hadn't voted the way you did. So thanks everyone! And be prepared to be blown away by what I come up with next!

As someone who tends to vent a lot... yeah I feel that. And you explaining that does put a lot of my worries at ease. I tend to try to plan things out a fair bit more and would probably take a lot longer to think of how to respond to that kind of situation, but based on what you're saying, that seems to be where you thrive.
it's definitely a great build for scaring the magical girls who don't fall for our otherworldly beauty shitless or mind games if we get some spell to place the visage of a dead person they know over our own.
This sounds like a great way to end up kicking off the sister reveal without realising when we use something like that on the MG teams Mentor.

Who I am betting money on having been romantically involved with Yume. If only for the Drama.

That might be able to give us a form of teleportation with the idea that death exists in all living things

…I'm very glad that we're just going ahead with death, but I'm now pretty sure that this entire thread will never ever let me live my "win button" comment down.

Ah well, at least our mentor is very cool.
