Counting Sheep - A Pokemon Trainer quest

[X] Plan: Lay of the Electrified Land
-[X] Have Marigold practice with Electrified Terrain.
—[X] See how her magnetic sense is affected, if at all.
—[X] See how the move interacts with the ocean and possibly with the water type Pokémon in it.
—[X] Train her agility while under the effects of the move: do this by playing catch with her and slowly making your throws harder and harder to catch.
-[X] Try and work out a way of communicating with Marigold, like the sort of charades your mentor and her Pokémon are able to do.
-[X] Explore the immediate area of the campsite, making sure not to enter the Nidoqueens territory, and help Marigold investigate anything that strikes her interest.

Plan's fine, but I just thought I'd mention that those last two parts aren't really necessary. Learning to understand each other is something you'd do anyway and that degree of fluency will take some time to develop since Marigold isn't quite smart enough yet for more complex stuff, and there's nothing to really explore in the area. It's a small secluded cove caught between cliffs, you can see the entirety of it from your campsite and the only way out is through the trail into the Nidoqueen's territory or the sea. One of the reasons Melati chose it in the first place is that she can easily keep an eye on everything while you work with Marigold.

That said, the exploration bit wouldn't really be considered 'training' in the first place anyway, unless you spun it as an activity where Marigold is front and centre the whole time - this is a vote for the stuff you want Marigold to be doing, while exploring the area would fall more under a personal activity that you let Margiold accompany you for.

In what this post was actually about, I'll be back tonight (call that 7 or 8 hours if that doesn't fit with your timezone) to keep an eye on how the vote is going and decide when I'll be calling it - though since I'll be away for most of tomorrow anyway I'll probably leave it open throughout the day unless it's well and truly dead.

I wonder if we can take advantage of the mareep line's slow speed and turn Marigold into a near immobile turret/tower/lighthouse. It'd probably require a constant pairing to take advantage of it though.

Marigold has heightened magnetic senses though. It feels like a waste if we don't teach her how to dodge attacks.
Plus she has unlimited energy in battle with the Battery trait. She's basically made to run and jump everywhere. If we combine Battery with her Beautiful wool, she could be an excellent physical attacker. In time Volt Tacle Marigold could be a hilarious possibility.

[X] Revulsion
[X] Plan: Lay of the Electrified Land

I'm just going to join in with the people that aren't cool with Bugsy's style.

How about this compromise:

Step 1: Get a phanphy/donphan.
Step 2: Teach Marigold how to "ride" it while it's using rollout.
Step 3: Abuse ground type immunity to electricity to just unload as they charge across the battlefield.

(Disclaimer: This might not be the most serious idea ever. Although, finding ome way to explot the type interaction can't hurt, even if it's only something as simple as Yasigi making a good target dummy we don't have to worry about accidentally frying.)

Right, seems pretty much like a landslide for plan Lay of the Electrified Land. Since I'm not going to be doing any writing tomorrow anyway, I'll still wait until tomorrow evening before calling it - let's say twenty hours from now, which is 18:00 BST - but it's looking like you'll be working with Electric Terrain.

I hope we bought shoes with rubber soles

[X] [Bugsy] (Revulsion)
[X] [Marigold Training] MagNET some gains

I'm going with Crab's plan.

And that's the vote ! As was beginning to look pretty obvious, Lay of the Electric Terrain won, though I'm actually a bit surprised Wariness edged it over Revulsion - I thought I'd seen more of the latter. Anyhow, I'll get started on the update tomorrow, and I'll try not to have it out any later than next Saturday !

As I mentioned earlier, those two later parts in the plan are basically superfluous - there's nothing to really explore in your surroundings and it's not much of a training action either way, and the communication thing is something you'll be doing all the time anyway while Marigold isn't quite smart enough yet for more complex communication.

Just read through this. Very happy battery and magnetic won.

My immediate thought when I saw those options was a floating superconducting magnet. Anime logic our way into the Levitate ability. Later on we could add in Star Trek logic and reverse the polarity, at will switch from being lighter then air to being effectively heavier then a Metagross.

Honestly, that's very simple. The move Magnet Rise does exactly the former, and with a bit of tweaking it can probably do the latter. I was honestly surprised nobody talked about Magnet Rise, especially since the Mareep line can learn it.

There's also the possibility of using Magnet Rise in short bursts to make Marigold into a high speed mon, which I'm leaning towards heavily cause of her massive amounts of energy.

I'll be honest, the last pokemon game I played was Silver when it first came out. If I looked at a move list I'd have to spend an hour researching what all the moves do.

I originally wanted to take my superconducting magnet idea further to a rail gun but couldn't figure it out without having to carry a supply of ammunition.

Fun fact: Alolan Golem basically has a rail gun mounted on his back and can use random rocks lying around as amunition.

Although, that might be a rock type thing, so I am now imagining carrying around a beldum to use as magnetic amunition that can return on its own after being fired.

Just caught up with this quest. Looking absolutely wonderful. Has anyone had any thoughts about themes? I'm kind of wanting to use "evolves twice" as a theme, since it leaves us a lot of leeway. And given that we're apparently on the edge of the territory of a Nidoqueen; which means that there are likely Nidoran♂/♀ to be found; and at their earliest stage they also fit into a "cute" aesthetic. Another possible theme could be "agile" pokemon? If only because I wanted a Meowth as a starter (and they're shockingly versatile mon, especially with the Technician Ability). Actually, @ReverendSwing how are abilities working here? I don't think it was really covered.

@ReverendSwing I went looking at Mereeps evolutions, how would building a theme around her wool (soft, fluffy, insulated from temperature, padding to absorb physical hit) work when she ends up losing all of it?

A lot of ideas have been thrown out, ranging from fluffy/cute/beautiful pokemon, to area control and/or status effects, various takes on elemental affinities, a lighthouse theme, some people still wanting to stick with (pseudo-)dragons and probably half a dozen other ideas I can't recall from the top of my head.

That being said, three stage evolutions has been brought up before and the QM response was calling it very loose, before kinda trailing off into mentioning that we probably want to wait until Melati's lesson on themes in the Quest itself before really attempting to settle on anything.

Thanks for the info edgedancer. Looking forward to seeing what our next lessons will be. And how the training is going to work out.
