As always, give me time to make your update.

... And oh yeah, before I forget, as a consequence of the last vote we now have a definite time of when the quest is happening. Harvard Summer Semester starts late June. The quest began 1 week after the summer classes.

It is notable because July 4 is going to be America's Independence Day. So, that's like the first event Tiffany might need to prepare for. We can even make it Tiffany's opening day if you want (with all the rewards and consequences of that).

He Robert is a 4-star Chef recognized by the World Culinary Association and a noted professor in the field of culinary archeology. He is recognized for his unique melding of Chinese and French cuisine. Notably, he is the son of infamous He Lei, the previous sect leader of the Five Element Chinese Culinary Sect who was deposed in the 97th Kunlun Convention, and Gertrude Boucher, a famous French historian.

He has several apprentices some managing his restaurants while others …

Tiffany skimmed through He Robert's Wikipedia article. The kindly old professor, she met yesterday, was surprisingly a big wig in the cooking world.

...Well, the fact that he was able to give her one of the most sought after cooking tools so easily should have clued her a bit.

You will be a great chef.

Professor He's word sat uneasily on Tiffany's mind.

That confidence and assurance of Tiffany's supposed skills… At that time, Tiffany just wanted to get an edge and thus activated the system's feature without thinking. But, now…

System, you didn't brainwash Professor He to give me this wok, did you?

User, please be reminded that the system is endorsed by the heavens. Heaven doesn't directly impinge on the free will of humankind. Thus, the system doesn't have any mental brainwashing skills.

The system only manipulated karma so that circumstance would favor the user.

Ok, system. I believe you. An unknown weight was metaphorically lifted from Tiffany's chest.

But, wait doesn't that mean Profesor He really believed in her?

Tiffany doesn't know how to feel about that.

This wok was a bit too troublesome for its own good. It doesn't help that the supposedly amazing cooking tool was the same as an ordinary wok at the moment.

Unnamed Wok

Status: Currently, a good cast iron wok
Gives 1d10 XP for strength and 1d10 XP for stamina

Awaken the will of the wok?

How exactly was she supposed to do that?

Remember that all cooking must come from the heart.

Tiffany remembered the Professor's words. Was that supposed to be a clue or something? She really wished people that give advice weren't so cryptic.

Still, despite the morning's confusion, today was turning out to be a great day for Tiffany. An email came from the online loaning website saying that her loan was approved. She checked her bank account and the 10,000 dollars minus the 300 dollars upfront fee was already credited to her account.

That also meant another day was added to her lifespan again giving her 11 days, 2 hours and 30 minutes.

A good start! She just needed to increase it more.

Humming while working at the kitchen, Tiffany was once again making another version of fried rice. This time she added some peas and carrots to the recipe.

Taste-testing her cooking, Tiffany noticed that her golden fried rice was as good as ever if a bit slightly off.

The peas and carrots added some sweetness which needed to be complemented by the seasoning to be brought out properly. Perhaps, she needed to add more sesame oil or is it salt?

She added some sesame oil and tasted it again.

Much better.

Nonetheless, there was something that nagged her. Maybe she needed more robust flavors?

For a moment, Tiffany had the insane urge to throw the fried rice and remake the whole thing from scratch. But, her penny-pinching ways wouldn't allow the waste.

Calm down, Tiffany. This is a perfectly good fried rice.

Besides, she reassured herself, an ordinary person probably wouldn't notice. Without her second memories, Tiffany doesn't think she would perceive the flaws herself.

Come to think of it, unless she followed the fried rice recipe given by the system exactly there seemed to be flaws in her dishes. One ingredient overpowered the other when she used Basmati rice and now a flaw in the seasoning measurements when she added the peas and carrots.

But, perhaps this was only expected?

It took a ridiculous amount of time in the mindscape and the help of the system to get the golden fried rice recipe exactly right.

System, could you give me the recipes for golden fried rice variants like when I want to use peas and carrot?

Of course, user! The system can provide the user with the perfect recipe for all variations of fried rice! The user only needs to redeem them from the system shop.

Really system?

I won't lie to you, user.

Then, can I open the system shop?

Of course, user.

From Tiffany's perspective, a large interface appeared which contained many pictures of fried rice. Wait system. Why are they all gray?

Gray pictures meant that the user doesn't have enough karma (lifespan) to buy them.

It cost lifespan?!

Yes, user. Most of the system's services will cost lifespan.

Never mind. I'm no longer interested system.

Tiffany silently cursed in her head. She was doing the system tasks to get lifespan why would she use it to buy recipes? The system feels like a scam at some points.

She was still mulling on the matter when June stumbled into the kitchen/dining room fresh from sleep. "Tiffany, is that fried rice?" The bespectacled girl still clad in pajama, excited asked.

"Yes, I made some for you."

"Thank you. I could use to waking up to your cooking every day." June joked. "Though, you might want to try varying your cooking a bit. You made me fried rice yesterday as well. As good as your fried rice is, I would get tired of it someday."

"Hey, this one has peas and carrot in it. That makes it a completely new recipe."

"Well, I hope your customer would agree on that," June remarked.

"My fried rice is the best. No one needed anything more!" Tiffany bantered back.

The two of them continued like that until June finished her breakfast and had to go to class.

Still, June's remark didn't leave Tiffany's mind. She might need another offering on her food cart which was easier said than done.

System, is the cooldown done yet? Tiffany asked.

Cooldown has finished, the system can initiate the task

Finally! I'm ready system!

Perhaps, because Tiffany knew what to expect or maybe because she didn't have the memories of her past life jumbled on her mind, but the shift to the mental mindscape only caused her mild vertigo.

"Good Morning Tiffany", Shen smiled at her. "You've been a busy little bee, haven't you? You even got a rare cooking tool since I last saw you."

"Well, people are motivated when they know they are going to die," Tiffany answered drily.

"Perhaps." Shen didn't agree or disagree. "In any case, you are here to learn another recipe." In a lecturing voice, Shen began to speak." The classic pork used in pork fried rice is char siu - which literally means pork roasted in a fork."

"Wait, Is char siu the red meat that I see hanging in Chinese meat shops?"

"Most likely. But, while Char Siu is common red-colored meat is quite common in Chinese cuisine."

"Ah. Ok."

Shen waved his hand and on the table and then three pieces of pork appeared.

"The first thing that you need to learn about cooking char siu is picking the proper pork part. For char siu the best part is either of these four - the pork belly, pork butt, pork neck's end, and the pork armpit."

"The pork belly makes a fatter and juicier char siu, the pork butt produces leaner char siu and finally, the pork neck or armpit produces a marbled char siu. Since we are chopping the char siu into tiny pieces for fried rice, the best part to choose is the one which can deliver more impact so we're going to be using pork neck. The pork neck is the part which is surrounded by fat and thus able to absorb more flavor from the cooking process ."

"Hypothetically speaking if you want to make char siu the main course what part would you pick?" Tiffany interrupted in what she hoped was an innocent voice.

"Hypothetically?" Shen's voice was wry showing that he wasn't buying it. "As I've said, it depends on what you're going to use the char siu for, but if you're planning to make it your main course it is better to go for the pork butt since it has a nice ratio of fat and meat; though cooking using that needs some delicate attention to avoid drying the meat. On the other hand, the pork armpit has delicious marbling which can react very well with a paired marinade."

Tiffany tried hard to memorize that, there is no way she's going to buy a variation with her lifespan.

With another wave of Shen's hand - a chunk of pork meat, a chef knife, and a chopping board were situated in front of Tiffany.

"Our next lesson is cutting pork meat properly. You need to cut the pork in 1 ½ to 2-inch pieces for char siu." Suddenly, as if teleported Shen was on Tiffany's back pointing at the pork meat with his own kitchen knife. "First, it's important to find where the meat of the fat and the membrane of the muscle meet. Then you need to cut the pork meat by following the membrane lines."
With practiced movement, Shen cut the pork without resistance. Then showed the cut to Tiffany. "If you cut it this way, the fat and the tougher membrane would be on the outside which will protect the tender meat and keep it juicy on the grill. "

After explaining, Shen signaled that Tiffany should start practicing.

For her part, Tiffany cut slowly and carefully; slicing the pork meat exactly along the membrane until the piece was separated from the greater whole. Then, she examined the meat and repeated the same process again and again.

Time flew as Tiffany slowly whittled the pork cut into tiny pieces.

Finally, all the meat was properly and evenly cut. Tiffany smirked triumphantly at Shen.

"You took a whole hour to do it." Shen deadpanned. "If this is a cooking contest or an ordinary day at a restaurant, you've already failed on speed alone.

"No one mentioned a time limit." Tiffany reasoned. "Besides, if the fried rice lesson is any indication, if I've made a small mistake on the cut, you're going to make me repeat it."

"I suppose you're right," Shen muttered grudgingly. "I'll allow it this time since I didn't mention any time limit. But, don't think you'll get away next time."

X.x.X.

After the pork meat cutting lesson, they proceeded with the marinade which was the easiest one in Tiffany's opinion. Using an electronic weight she managed to make a five-spice powder - a special spice made of cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and Szechwan peppercorns. Shen was adamant that Tiffany makes the powder by hand since the store-bought version might have been on the shelves too long and thus have long lost their flavor.

Thankfully, the other parts of the marinade can be brought from the store. Fermented brown bean sauce, Red Fermented bean curd cubes, Rose cooking wine and most importantly maltose.

The pork meat was supposed to be marinated on this special blend for 24 hours which Shen nicely fast-forwarded.

At last, the two of them are on the final stretch of the dish - Watching the char siu hanging on the hook slowly cook to its final form over a charcoal oven. This process wasn't allowed to be fast-forwarded since Tiffany needs to learn how to watch the charcoal temperature and find the ideal time to do the basting of the meat so it doesn't dry under the charcoal fire. And while infinitely easier than the fried rice lesson, it was also infinitely boring since the whole charcoal cooking of the meat takes 3 hours. Which meant 3 hours of doing nothing.

Which was probably why Tiffany began to engage Shen in small talk. Trying to glean question about the system and Shen, himself, which Shen was frustrating vague about.

"Hey, Shen. Are you an employee of the System or something?"

"No, you could say that this is like more of a hobby than anything else."

"Are you a supernatural creature then?"

...

To complain about cooking which Shen was more forthcoming.

"How exactly do you activate a supernatural cooking wok, anyway?" Tiffany asked Shen hoping he could solve this dilemma.

Shen once again pulled an enigmatic smile which he did for half of their small talk. "I believe someone already gave you the idea."

Remember that all cooking must come from the heart.

Tiffany remembered the Professor's words again. "Wait. How do you know that? Are you stalking me?"

For the first time, Tiffany saw Shen lose his composure. He actually sputtered and hurried to defend himself. "No. I haven't been stalking you. I just get periodic updates from the system of what is happening."

"That feels like stalking."

"No, it is more like a bureaucracy thing. Really, it's just a summary of your progress in cooking."

"Really?"

"Really."

"I don't believe you. To think the mighty Mr. Shen is a stalker." Tiffany is going to hold this on his head for as long as she can. This can be called revenge for the last training session.

Perhaps, noticing her plans, Shen changed his tack. "How about I give you a clue on awakening your wok in exchange for never mentioning this again?"

"Deal!" Of course, Tiffany's going to take that. "So how do you awaken the magic wok?"

"First, tell me, what is cooking for you?" Shen asked seriously.

"A way to finish the system task?" Tiffany thought for a few minutes. She has never cooked before and would never have cooked in the future without the appearance of the system.

At that Shen facepalmed. "Well, at least, now we know why there wasn't even a single reaction."

"Ok, new plan. How about think of the person you want to cook for while you used the wok."

"A person that I want to cook for?" Tiffany mused.

X.x.X.

In the end, it only took Tiffany three repetitions to control the charcoal heat and get the basting timing right.

A sweet tantalizing smell abounds as the char siu hangs in the oven fork, red juicy marinade slowly dripping from it and into the charcoal below.

Even, Tiffany who cooked it want to take the skewers fork and have a large tender bite.

Who do you want Tiffany to think of when using the wok for now?
[ ] Gonzales Family - A Safe Haven No Matter What the Storm
[ ] June Davis - A Friend is Family in Distant Lands

Whatever you picked is also going to retroactively get a bump in positive relationship points. Also, can anyone share with me how much typical fried rice or pork BBQ cost in your area, I'm trying to eyeball how much should we set the prices for the next vote.

I'm going to update the status page a bit later, I'm going to sleep a bit. Later guys.

Oh yeah before I go to sleep.

The retroactive relationship bump, I'm going to apply is for all your three friends (apartment-mates) not just June vs your family (dad, mom and your little brother).

So its totally even.

Prices around my area:
2 to 3 dollars for vegetable fried rice in small bowls.
Pork fried rice tends to be between 8 to 9 dollars for a serving.
Other pork dishes tend to range from 9 to 12 dollars for large servings.
Most of the places around my area give enough food for 2 people on most plates. Also the other pork plates also usually include vegetable fried rice on the side.

The thought of char siu pork makes me go cray cray 😍

Wrong department if you wanted that one, try the Culinary Engineering department lol

...okay Tiffany, how were you even a food critic to begin with?

Also, can anyone share with me how much typical fried rice or pork BBQ cost in your area, I'm trying to eyeball how much should we set the prices for the next vote.
High COL US Metro:
Lunch portion: $8-10
Dinner portion: $12-14

Food truck fried rice: $10-12, slightly smaller portion than fixed restaurant lunch also

Eh, what the hell. Armchair psych that she had an unhappy family relationship if she was a food critic who doesn't understand cooking.

@Mrbrown1000
Oh thanks. This is very nice to know!
Hmmm... this meant that vegetable fried rice in a single serving equals 2 to 3 dollars.
Pork fried rice somewhere between 4 to 4.5 dollars
Pork dishes with rice included is 4.5 to 6 dollars.

@wdango
Nice! I only know the jarred version. ^^
I also have a love/hate affair with the stinky tofu cousin.

@Spectrum
This provides a more premiumer range. Good.

I think I'll be posting an estimated food cost per meal which you guys are free to tear apart sometime this day. Along with our tentative restaurant food mechanics.

June Davis won! Narratively, it meant that Tiffany feels much closer to her friends than her family which will be interesting. Also, meant I'm not going to introduce her family for the first arc! So yeah!

X.x.X.

While, I'm going to make your update please feel free to tear up/fill up the food cost. To avoid mechanical bloat, the quest will just decide the profit for each meal and then multiply it by customer. There would also be menu slots depending on how large your restaurant is.

*1 pound of rice is measured at 2 1/2 cups uncooked. After cooking, the rice usually doubles. So 1 pound of rice is usually 5 servings.
** A pound of pork shoulder/butt is 16 ounces. An average meal serving size is 8 ounces.

Not very familiar with imperial measurement, but pretty happy with the abstraction and simplification.
