Special Note:
To those who are keeping track of your character sheet, I have added/will add the health stat. I was planning on treating stamina as health as well as energy but I was running some future simulations and it doesn't map well. So stamina is the overall energy bar stat and Health is well health. If you overexerted yourself or did something unhealthily like eat poisonous fish or something this is the stat that I will use.

I may need to make an informational post on how your stat actually works... hmmm

PS: I did some minor editing and tweaks on the previous updates to take out grammar issues and making Tiffany's personality more wholistic. So if you found that it was slightly different you're not remembering it wrong.

wish someone told me that sooner.

On How Stats Work For Cooking Karma System
On How Stats Work For Cooking Karma System
Currently, the stats of this quest guide the narrative and serves as a solid benchmark of Tiffany's progress as well as what she can and can't do. For how they exactly work, let me use your next update as an example.

You have previously voted to do some bargain hunting. Tiffany could use her Intelligence to be able to analyze and see great deals and appliance that won't fall apart. Its also you're highest stat so I'll use that.

Intelligence has 4 dots. Intelligence has a + sign as well which meant it could increase due to past life This time though it doesn't because your past life didn't do any bargain hunting or have any skills using it.

I also look at the attributes and there are none that modify the roll for this action. So, its 4.

I then multiply it by ten and then measure it against the DC set-up. There are 4 appliances you need to bargain hunt for so its 4d40

4d40 = 30, 14, 28, 16
The DC for getting an appliance that won't break for 6 months is 10. ^^

.... Well aren't you guys lucky?

The 30 is an overwhelming success as well.
Night Sentinel threw 4 40-faced dice. Reason: Bargain Hunting Total: 88
30 30 14 14 28 28 16 16

You'd be surprised how many restaurants go out of business and end up having to sell their secondhand kitchen stuff.

Some are better off bought new though.
If you use utensils, take it new. Its the first thing the customer has to look at when eating and recycled utensils are immediately visually evident, the plastic stuff will have microscratches, the ceramics will be chipped, the metal will be dented.

For cookware, honestly doesn't matter, just check the bottom and the handles, if the previous owner is careless the bottom can be seriously screwed up by leaving it on the fire dry, and any commercial cookware puts a lot of stress on the handles, so you want to be absolutely sure the rivet or screws won't rip their way free of the socket while you have 10 liters of boiling hot liquid in it, and you lift it. Knives, ladles and the like don't matter much how old they are as long as its in good condition.

Stoves you're probably looking at a new one. The pipes and other such bits can last a good while, but I'd err on the side of playing it safe with fire and theres just far too many cooking accidents that can degrade or stiffen the rubber dangerously.

X.x.X.

Next morning, Tiffany stood at June's bedroom door a bit guiltily. After finishing the fried rice, June suddenly became inspired and apparently did an all-nighter trying to make Tiffany's food cart concept.

Tiffany planned to stay up with her, but she was shoed away saying that she was disturbing the creative energy. And perhaps, the fatigue of the previous events have caught her. But, Tiffany promptly fell asleep again.

Which was why to thank June for her hard work, Tiffany made her breakfast.

The golden fried rice she was able to make right now might not be good as using a wok but it still tasted good. And June certainly enjoyed it yesterday, hopefully, she might want some more. Unfortunately, it was still the only thing that Tiffany knew how to cook for now.

Speaking of that.

System, can I do the Part 3 now?

The recipe tutorial is still at cooldown to avoid giving the user mental damage.

Tiffany looked at her life counter which showed 216 hours, 32 minutes and 10 seconds

I need something to do.

System, you mentioned that there was a main quest activated yesterday right?

Correct, user!

New Main Quest Alert!
Tutorial: Preparing for your First Restaurant!

The user is encouraged to do her best to prepare for her first restaurant. The system will then give rewards based on how prepared the user is!

Capital - 50% progress
The user has submitted a business loan for the restaurant a the tune of 10,000 dollars
Reward: 1 day lifespan

Original Restaurant Design - 75% progress
The user has solicited an apprentice architect to make the design for her restaurant.
Reward: 3 days lifespan

It seemed like the system will reward her for successful actions done to prepare for the restaurant. That said, she can't exactly progress the loan and the design anymore since all those needs are time now.

Time that she didn't have.

Tiffany can still do other things.

Think. What can she do to prepare?

A few seconds and she had an answer.

Equipment!

Even a humble food cart needs one.

And she knows where to get it as well. The largest second-hand appliances in the area- Boris' Second Home Appliance.

X.x.X.

Truthfully, it was the second time that Tiffany would shop at Boris' Second Home Store. When she was just starting college, they needed to furnish the apartment but while Madison was perfectly fine spending incredulous amount of money Tiffany wasn't; especially on items that she would only use a few years, thus second hand it was. At least, on her part of the apartment.

Considering everything she brought was still working, Tiffany thought that she made the right choice and Boris definitely earned a recommendation.

When she opened the door, a professional saleslady quickly intercepted her. "Welcome to Boris. How may I help you?"

"I'm looking for some kitchen appliances, please."

"Our Kitchen appliances section is on the third floor. That way." The saleslady helpfully pointed toward the direction of the stairs. "You can also use the computer terminal to look up information on your preferred product. " The lady reminded.

On the third floor, Tiffany made a beeline toward the fridges. From there she checked the ages of the respective fridges on the computer, did some test run with a thermometer to see if it actually goes cold and not have any funny smells. Tiffany also inspected the drip pans, hinges, and other vulnerable areas.

After checking everything, Tiffany was confident in her choices.

For a mini Fridge, she chose the 2-year-old 4.4 cubic Danby. It has a steel door which should protect it from constant transportation and plenty of space. It was pre-owned by a student and only costs 50 dollars which surely was a steal!

As for the mini Freezer, she went with 4-year-old Suspensetown which was quite lightweight compared to the other freezer available. More importantly, it has a manual defrost setting which would make it easier to remove the ice and service. The freezer cost 75 dollars.

Finally, she picked a Costway Beverage Showcase that could easily house 60 cans of beverages for 150 dollars.

After doing that, she wandered into another section and nabbed a 90 cup rice Commercial Cooker along with a nice knife set from the kitchen showcase. Apparently, a Spanish themed restaurant had closed down and was trying to recoup their capital.

All in all, she managed to get a lot of great appliances for only 725 dollars.

Quite a bargain!

System, does this count for the new mission?

Yes, user. A subtask has been completed. Would you like to submit it now?

Procuring Starting Equipment -
4 ordinary equipment registered.
Reward: 2 days lifespan reward

A thought struck Tiffany.

Does this mean that the more equipment she started with the bigger the reward? Maybe she could ---

User while the amount of equipment does contribute to the reward. It is not the sole criterion. That meant that buying cheap appliances wouldn't do anything but waste your starting capital.

Yes User, that meant buying every type of pan wouldn't change the system reward.

Darn. Tiffany thought she found a loophole.

X.x.X.

Now, what things do I need?
[ ] None.
[ ] Write in

Choosing none means that we are done with shopping around Boris.

Also, sorry the update was a bit late this time. Mysterious Old man isn't cooperating with me. I think I rewrote it twice now but I can't get you guys to bump to Mysterious old man naturally. (In contrast, Rival guy is going to be bumped at the Spanish Kitchen showcase if chosen) .

So please vote where you will bump on Mysterious Old Man for the next update.
Note that the choice would also become Tiffany's alma matter.

The prestigious school is going to be a plot point. One of the greater goals of the quest is to make Tiffany love cooking. I don't know if I managed to convey it but she's lowkey depressed about the situation.

And what is everyone's opinion on buying everything or renting a commissary kitchen in the future? Please note the apartment kitchen is more of a mini-kitchen than anything else. It has a stove, a refrigerator, and some pots and pans but beyond the absolute basic, it has nothing else.

[X] A good chef's knife

Does this need to be specified? Probably not, but chef's can get attached to their knives. Would be nice to get a quality one.

I am torn, rediscovering old cooking styles and recipes and putting a spin on them/bringing them to the modern age just like sounds appealing — there's at least one Great Big Story video about it — but like, Culinary Engineering is interesting in another way because the closest non-fantastical analogue to it is 'Food Engineering' which well, is all about the technical side of things and includes neat things like food waste/leftover managements, one of the greatest waste products of the modern world in aggregate. The last study I recall puts a third of all edibles produced be put to waste due to mismanagement in all chains of consumption (the production, distribution, and costumers) and if we are to bring the cooking levels of this world to another level, this would be one of the bigger impact points.

But so is ensuring the greatest possible variance of cooking styles and recipe proliferation throughout the world. No bad choice, really. Just appeal.

She bought a set, since it was specified in the previous plan:

Commisary kitchen may be viable if you have a delivery business started/some kind of UberEats/Grubhub/etc type deal but my sense is that initial penetration is hard being so out of sight.

Obvious choice of wanting to be technically inclined about things. There's room in the space for that, at least from an influence perspective (Good Eats etc)

That way we'd need to travel to Shaolin to learn about their Ancient Five Ring Rice Cooking Technique.

Looks at the tied votes...
Hmmm... Let me give you guys more information about what exactly you guys are voting for. As you may have surmised, The mysterious old man would become a faculty member of whatever winning vote. Thus, by catching the eye of the mysterious old man you'll get some support from the relevant department right oft the bat.

As for the difference between the two,... well some voters have already guessed it but let me clarify.

@Vocalend is right in the money. Culinary Archeology is about bringing ancient recipes and cooking techniques into the modern world. One of their most recent and famous discovery is why certain woks made from a certain time period in Ancient China just produce better food than others. Some of these woks even survived to this day and became treasures of certain Culinary Sects in China. So, if you pick that you can be one of the rare chefs that have those special woks which is quite sought after. Also, with this department, you'll get some hints of the fantasy in the setting. That said, that might be the only thing that department can help Tiffany right now. Tiffany is a bit small-time and doesn't have any skill/ability to reproduce some of their recipes. And Archeology itself is all about luck and opportunity. Currently, they're focusing on investigating the baking stone of Africa which you'll be no help at all.

Culinary Engineering, on the other hand, is all about using SCIENCE to help culinary endeavors. Right oft the bat you'll be getting a metallurgical superior wok. And if you choose maybe you can help them in their street food ergonomics research? Perhaps, your feedback could help them develop rice drier for better fried rice? Get a chance to try their prototype ice box before it hits the market? Stuff like that

The choice is basically getting an epic starting equipment but nothing more for a long time vs. incremental and many small rewards over a long period of time.

I'm a big believer in getting better slowly over time, rather than relying on one big boost.

Fuck it I'll help sway the tie to one side.

Past of Future? Past, I guess, since it also sees more fantasy stuff.
