Children of a Scorched Earth

Turn 4 Results
Turn 4 (2044 CE/ 4 VD)

3 Shipbuilding actions

We can't afford anything and there is nothing we absolutely need.
The Jiàn and Arclites undergo their normal maintenance, but that is all.

Result: No Shipyard activity.

5 Construction actions

If scavenging yields 260 IC or more, then upgrade the Medium UTF to a Large UTF. If not, build a Small UTF.
The upgrade process begins and is completed on schedule. The Medium UTF is now a Large UTF.

Results: 876-500=376IC remaining. Medium UTF upgraded to Large UTF.

Upgrade the Small Warehouse/Supply Depot to a Medium Warehouse/Supply Depot.
The IC goes to use upgrading the Small Warehouse to its Medium cousin.

Result: 376-150= 226 IC remaining. Small Warehouse upgraded to Medium Warehouse.

If there is anything left that does not fit in the warehouse build a Factory with it.
Result: Point null, all IC can be stored in warehouse. 226 IC stored in Medium Warehouse.

5 Research actions (R&D)

Continue current research until done
Testing for Nutritional Supplements I is complete and it is shown that they can safely substitute 10%of a person's normal food requirements.

Result: 41+9=50/50 RC: Nutritional Supplements I research completed. People now require 10% less food.

Improved Lunar construction techniques 1 (To decrease the IC needed to construct various civilian constructions. Working so hard to produce new UTFs in the most efficient way possible has caused us to review our construction methods and try to improve them...)
The labs begin cooking up more efficient construction techniques and have a few rough concepts they want to work out. Their idea is that these techniques could reduce IC costs by 10%.

Result: 0+16=16/100 RC: Improved Lunar Construction Techniques is being researched.

3 Diplomacy actions

Do survey of the people on the base. We have lots of new people; we need to know what they can do. At the same time we should get health info etc, subtly screen for spies, hear grievances and solicit feedback on how we're doing, see if they have any ideas to improve our situation and the like. Hettie supports this action.
For starters, the people seem to be very optimistic about the future of Gagarin. They are growing used to their new home and the worst calamity to befall the populace in the last few months was a few lab techs contracting the common cold. One particularly plucky citizen comes forward and proposes that someone create a new show of some sort for the people to amuse themselves with. He however, does not wish to be involved in the creation of this show.

Result: 1d100=100 (critical success): Morale is soaring and an idea for improving morale has sprung up.

Organise regulations for double bunking with the aim to limit conflict and health hazards.
Legislation is drafted which pairs people with both those who they won't psychologically suffer with and, if applicable, their family. Medical concerns are taken into account and the chance of any large scale disease is very low.

Result: 1d100=75 (success): double bunking legislation crafted and the reaction to it is good. The people are glad the council is addressing this issue.

Improve public support.
Efforts to improve public support are ineffectual due to the wave of optimism that seems to be sweeping over Gagarin Base. Any effort s to improve support result in paltry changes.

Result: 1d100=18 (suboptimal failure): Little support, if any, is gained.

3 Military actions

Keep up perimeter patrols.
Everything goes normally on the patrol. There are no signs of any more scouts near the base, but the soldiers still seem on edge. This is likely due to the discovery of the scout last time.

Result: 1d100=49 (neutral): Nothing of interest to report.

Survey for ore deposits etc. Magnus supports this action.
Two ore deposits are found. One is of poor quality while the other is of comparable quality to the one currently being mined.

Result: 1d100=54+10 (success) Two ore deposits found. (1d100=18 [poor] 1d100=47 [neutral])

Thoroughly explore and familiarise yourselves with the local area.
Exploring the area around Gagarin has proven good for the troops. They have familiarized themselves with the topography and have identified a few spots that would be good for mounting a defence should the need arise. Some of the troops also the liberty of unofficially naming the odd rock formation after themselves for amusement.

Result: 1d100=76 (success): troops now familiar with local area, morale improves.

3 Economic actions

Buy as much food as possible from Daedalus Base.
Daedalus reports a better harvest that last year and they offer enough food to feed 1000 people for a year. All they ask is that you are ready to engage the General at any time. Daedalus also reports that the General has sent some of his officers to its facility, so they fear that the alliance the three facilities have formed is compromised. The General likely suspects you are plotting against him.

Result: 1d100=90 (success): Food gained, news on the General acquired.

6 General Actions

Keep psych-care going.
It would seem that, though the mental health of the people was doing swimmingly, the psychologists were another story. Over half of the psychologists seem to have been suffering from depression brought on by hearing thousands of sad stories from others while having no one to turn to themselves. Many of these psychologists commuted suicide.

Result 1d100=5 (major failure): >50% of psychologists dead, morale will suffer a penalty until replacements are found.

Continue to monitor the situation on Earth.
Conditions on Earth are better only in the sense that they don';t seem to be getting much worse. The Northern ice cap seems to be expanding at a rate indicating that Earth may be entering into an age of global cooling. Weather patterns remain hostile and unpredictable, but they are weakening in severity and meteorologists believe that after the next year, an Arclite could safely manage a trip to the surface and back. Radiation would be a threat, but there are some areas in Sub- Saharan Africa and Southern South America where the radiation levels are less threatening. Satellite monitoring also suggests that there are massive wildfire burning in Siberia, some of which may be the size of small countries. Based on the interference of many factors, population estimates are in the hundreds of millions, but are likely to decrease.

Result: Information on Earth gained.

Continue salvage efforts in near space: gathering up space debris and abandoned satellites. Jack supports this action.
Jack leads a small group of Arclites into LEO to begin salvaging what remains of the satellites and stations therein. It would seem that well over 1000 people survived the firestorm in these stations, but that they soon died of either asphyxiation, dehydration, or starvation. They faced a slow, grim death. After going over this somber sight, a decent amount of IC is gathered.

Result: 1d100=56 (success): 500 IC recovered, bodies discovered.

Continue plans for Kindergartens/school-system.
The school system continues formation, but a curriculum debate among the teachers results in little progress being made on any actual planning.

Result: 1d100= 10 (suboptimal failure):school system progress: 50%

Study the data from the L1 research station.
The encryption on the files was easily bypassed once a few techs figured out a sort of "key". The few scientists who could potentially understand the data from L1 are astounded upon looking at it. The data does indeed seem to depict the schematics for a functioning warp drive capable of speeds up to 10c. The design is noted for its simplicity and elegance, in fact, many of the scientists are ashamed they didn't design it first. Other data reveals that a ship equipped with this drive did exeist, but station records show that it undocked from the station in April 2042.The identity of who or whatever stole the ship is unknown, but records also show that whoever took it also had the proper codes to do so, as no security breach had been logged. If the ship had some kind of locator beacon, then it is either not operating, does not have line of sight to a receiver, or has been disabled. The worst thing to come out of this is that it would appear that all data on the FTL ship itself was expunged from the system in 2042

Result: 1d100=61 (success): Data from L1 is recovered. Warp Based FTL I added to tech.

That sounds nice, it's been hard for me to get a hold of what's even been going on and just thought most everyone else was having no real issues with it.

Well guys, you heard it. Earth is still reeling, but starting to recover. We need to finish her off while we still can.

Just a thought, but does anyone else think we should try to get some more refugees from Earth? We just can't leave everyone to die down there. If we get luck, we might get some more specialized works like engineers and stuff.

If you don't mind the peanut gallery chiming in; you probably can't take many, if any, refugees on at this time, given you're already having trouble housing and feeding the ones you currently have.

What you probably could do is help to organize the survivors, and possibly help evacuate them to areas that are less affected by radiation or the coming nuclear winter. Possibly provide information about the weather and the like to help them prepare for storms and such, or provide them with (small) amounts of crucial medicines.
In the long run, you'll probably be able to pick up people on Earth and evacuate them onto the moon, but that'll be in fairly small quantities, so you'll have to be careful about not causing any problems with those remaining behind for the time being.

keep in mind that much of where refugees would likely live (what were major population centers) is probably a radioactive hellscape.

If you don't mind the peanut gallery chiming in;
As a matter of fact, I greatly encourage the peanut gallery to speak up. Just because you don't have the vote doesn't mean that additional input isn't helpful.

I wish to set up a mine this turn on the ok deposit, and a factory to make stuff in. Do we have a factory yet?

Zero radio transmissions are being picked up from Earth. Zero. Whatever happened down there was actually a lot more destructive than just a nuclear war.

Easier than evacuation people to the moon would be just recolonizing Earth. As bad as Earth might get, it will almost certainly remain less hostile than the lunar environment. Well, assuming whatever managed to obliterate every last radio transmitter on the entire planet isn't still there.

Let's not forget Mystery FTL vessel bugging the fuck out and scrubbing the database about what it was being built or.
