Side Story: Minato vs Edo Tensei Part 3
Minato suddenly appeared in the Hokage's office of the Leaf's administration building, the glowing seal on the floor disappearing from view as soon as he appeared. He took deep breaths as he grimaced from his injuries, pressing his stabbed hand over his abdominal wound with his remaining good hand. He was going to lumber over to a chair, but he was suddenly helped to a seat by the familiar tender touch of his wife.

"Thank you, darling..." Minato said with labored breaths as he winced from the pain. Jiraiya wasn't kidding when he said he was horrible with medical ninjutsu.

"The Hokage needs medical assistance in his office now, over!" Rusumi said into a one-ear radio headset, cleanly visible on the side of her head opposite where the fringe on her short hair was parted. Veins were bulging from her Byakugan, showing that she was keeping tabs on most of the village from this location. Her flak jacket had been removed and set on the floor, but she was otherwise wearing the standard shinobi attire of the Leaf.

Rusumi's Theme

Rusumi Hyuga, known across the shinobi world as the Unseen Commander, was a bit older than Minato. While they had both grown up during the Second Shinobi World War, Rusumi was in late adolescence during the war's start, while he was just entering it. She was always a problem for her clan, since she eschewed their traditions entirely. She never learned the Gentle Fist, seeing far greater capabilities for the clan's doujutsu than a mere taijutsu style. And seeing the failures of her clan during that bloody war pushed her to learn from the Hyuga's mistakes. She used her Byakugan tactically and logistically during the Third Shinobi World War, directing people from afar and setting up traps with earth and water ninjutsu uniquely applied safely from a long distance. Ignoring her clan's customs and demands made her an enemy of the Hyuga, but a hero of the Leaf: her strategies were one of the key factors of the Leaf's victory in that war. Minato couldn't help but fall in love when he was exposed to her brilliant mind on the battlefield. In fact, Rusumi was Hiruzen's second pick for his successor as Hokage, a true testament to her intellectual abilities considering that she was otherwise a strong jonin but ultimately unimpressive in battle compared to any Kage, Hokage or not, before her. But an archaic condition from the founding of the village meant that the Hyuga, as one of the founding clans, decided matters concerning members of their clan, and so Rusumi was forbidden from becoming Hokage by the Hyuga leadership. And so, after the treacheries of the fallen Sannin that was currently assaulting his village (and one sensei that refused the title), the Hokage mantle fell on Minato's shoulders. While the Hyuga clan also forbade her from becoming jonin commander due to their petty grudge, it was the ANBU where he could put her in a position where she belonged. That unit was hand-picked by the Hokage, and so she was appointed as its commander... after convincing the previous commander, Danzou, to retire.

"The next time I tell you it's a trap, you do not engage!" she growled as she glared at him without turning her head. She shortly realized the social faux pas her radial vision was causing as she turned her head in his direction. "What even happened out there?"

"I'm here!" exclaimed Biwako, Hiruzen's wife, as she burst into the office. She saw Minato's injuries and immediately ran over and started to heal them.

"Thank you, Lady Biwako," Minato said with a sigh of relief as he felt the pain start to subside. He then addressed his wife's question. "The first two Hokage were merely very destructive and dangerous distractions. The woman brought back was Ibuki Uchiha, and it looks like she obtained her Mangekyo Sharingan before her death. One of its techniques lets her steal an attribute from somebody. She took my speed from me... and I don't know if I'll even get it back. Let's operate under the assumption that I'm going to move like an elderly person for the rest of my life."

"Hokage is safe, medic is here. Toad Sage engaging Edo Tensei targets. Radio silence on my end until sitrep given, over and out," Rusumi said into her radio headset.

"Thank goodness for the Flying Thunder God jutsu, then," Biwako said as she finished closing the hole in Minato's hand and moved to his abdominal wound.

"Even then, I was only able to escape thanks to Jiraiya's intervention. My days as a shinobi may have come to an end. But enough about me... how is Hiruzen holding up?"

"...That, unfortunately, is the one thing my eyes cannot see," Rusumi said with a frustrated sigh. "Orochimaru has constructed some kind of barrier that the Byakugan cannot pierce through. One of his men is guarding the barrier from outside intervention, and he's quite a formidable foe... we've already lost a few ANBU to him, in addition to handling Guy at the same time. But he seems to be following orders and is just acting as a guard dog. I've ordered Guy to fall back and our forces to not engage him, and he's staying put, so that's fortunate for us."

"I see... and what is the current situation in the village?"

"Asuma was having issues against Fumi, so I sent Guy to assist him after having him disengage from Orochimaru's guard. She didn't stand a chance against both of them," Rusumi explained with a smirk. "As far as I can tell, Orochimaru's significant forces are few. Choza and Jiraiya's toads have already dealt with the large snakes he summoned. Besides the man protecting him, we're on the lookout for that false Leaf genin that used the genjutsu on the audience. There's no way the Sand would know enough about our village to falsify Leaf shinobi, so I assume he's Sound. We've also located that child accompanying Orochimaru. She's..."

Rusumi paused, her expression becoming quite focused. Minato knew at this moment that she was searching for where the child was. Rusumi tried to explain to him a few times just how the Byakugan's sight worked, but it was similar to describing a color to a blind man. He could grasp that it took great concentration to keep track of anything at a distance, otherwise it seemed to be the equivalent of being in peripheral vision. And if she could see most of the village from here... that was a lot of visual noise that needed to be parsed through.

Minato frowned when he saw Rusumi become dour and stern. "The child's killed the squad sent to deal with her. It looks like she's more dangerous than originally thought," Rusumi said.

"I'm afraid it may be worse than that. Hiruzen wished to speak with me in private... he had some suspicions of Orochimaru's disguise, and he was also concerned about the name of the child when Orochimaru said it. Hinata. Does that name sound familiar to you?"

Biwako finished healing Minato's injuries and was about to say that she was all done, but she grew silent when Rusumi's eyes grew wide and her skin visibly paled. "H-Hinata!? Are you absolutely sure that was the name Orochimaru spoke?"

"So I'm guessing Hiruzen's suspicions were correct, then..." Minato said grimly. He noticed that Biwako had finished healing him and gave her a light smile. "Thank you greatly, Lady Biwako. You can return to defending the village." Biwako nodded and vanished in a puff of smoke.

"If he suspected that child is a demon, then yes, he is correct. Hinata was heiress to the Hyuga clan, but for whatever reason, my cousin disinherited her and made his younger child the heir. Shortly after that, the Nine Tails' host fell ill..." Rusumi said with disgust.

"Of all the people for the Nine Tails to end up with after escaping..." Minato said with a sigh of frustration as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Interim message to all units; radio silence still requested. Do not engage a hostile child of the Sound. Subject is extremely dangerous. I repeat: do not engage! Over and out," Rusumi announced over the radio. "No need to stir up a panic among the troops," she added privately to Minato.

"Then what of our other top shinobi? And those from the Sand?" Minato asked.

"Fortunately for us, Chiyo and Ebizo seem to have been left behind to lead Sunagakure in Rasa's absence. A foolish mistake, but one I also wouldn't blame them for due to their history with Iwagakure's aggression. One of their jonin sensei was particularly dangerous due to having Scorch Release, but his close range nintaijutsu use of it made him an easy target to get dispatched by Kurenai. Another jonin sensei was also heavily taijutsu focused, making him easy prey for Inoichi's long-distance genjutsu. Their more generalized jonin are more difficult to handle... it's a shame Kakashi perished in that Land of the Waves mission, because he'd certainly be a big help today. Shikaku, last I knew, was about to engage one of them, and-"

Minato couldn't help but smile at seeing his wife get really in to explaining how she was commanding the village's forces. It was kind of scary how engaged she was with warfare... but that was the woman he fell in love with.

He didn't mean to tune her out because of rudeness, but rather because he was reflecting on the plan he had for dealing with the resurrected Hokage. He dismissed the thought earlier in the battle, but now it seemed inevitable. He had to sacrifice himself to save the village and remove a deadly weapon from being used against the Leaf in the future. It was tearing him up on the inside to be unable to mention to Rusumi that he was going to die, but he knew she would never let him go through with it. There may have been a safer way to deal with the undead foes, but it would take longer and result in more casualties... and so long as Orochimaru lived, so long as the knowledge of Edo Tensei existed, these revenants could be used against the village once again. Unless he brought forth the Shinigami.

Little Naruto and Tsuyu... his dear children would have to grow up more without a father. It was breaking his heart to think about this, but it had to be done so their future would be that safer. At least he could carry out this battle knowing they were safe and secure in the Hyuga clan grounds. He may have drawn the clan's ire for being an outsider marrying a main house member, no less a maverick within the clan, but the Hyuga treated their children well.

Speaking of the Hyuga, he truly hoped that Rusumi's heroism today in protecting the village would make them finally relent and allow her to be Hokage. Not only did she deserve the position, but he could think of no better shinobi of the Leaf to take up the mantle: Jiraiya never wanted the job, Hiruzen should stay retired, Tsunade had deserted the village so long ago and showed no signs of returning, Danzou always seemed like he was hiding something...

"-ato... MINATO!" Rusumi yelled, snapping him out of his thoughts. "Were you even listening to me?"

"I'm sorry... I can't multitask like you can. I was thinking of how to handle with the previous Hokage," Minato said with a bashful smile.

"...Well, it seems like you got one more undead guest. Dan Kato appears to be back," Rusumi said.

"Maybe Orochimaru needed someone to rein in Ibuki. That's unfortunate... I'm going to need Choza, Inoichi, and Shikaku's help here. You're going to have to apologize to them for having them see their old sensei controlled by the enemy."

"You're going back out there in your current state?" Rusumi asked with concern.

"Even with the Hokage not being at full power, they're still among the strongest foes I've ever fought. They constantly regenerate their chakra and bodies. Jiraiya's not going to win this alone."

Minato stood up from the chair, the toll of his speed being robbed from him truly setting in now that he was out of a combat situation. Not only was it agonizingly slow pushing himself out of the chair, but it also put a great strain on his muscles to even move. He moved to form the seal for Flying Thunder God. At least one of his kunai had to still be on the battlefield; hopefully he wouldn't have to resort to appearing right next to one of the tagged foes.

"There's nothing I can do to stop you, right?" Rusumi asked, worry spread across her face. She didn't wait for a response: she knew there was no stopping her husband when she got like this.

"I'm sorry, dear," he said with a sheepish grin. "But it's for-"

"For the village..." Rusumi sighed. "Yeah, I know." She walked over to her flak jacket on the floor and reached inside of it. She fetched something out of one of its pouches and walked over to Minato, presenting the object to him. It was a radio earpiece much like the one she was currently wearing.

Minato took it and slipped it over his ear. "I don't think this will be enough to help me out there... I'll also need a kiss for good luck."

"I can't believe you keep using those dorky lines..." Rusumi said, shaking her head at her husband's antics. "You're lucky I love you so much," she added as she relented and gave the Hokage his request.

"I love you too, Rusumi. Always," Minato said with a warm smile as he took one last look at his wife. Rusumi began to tear up and was about to protest, but in a blink of an eye, her husband was gone.

"Damn it all!" Rusumi swore as she slammed a fist on the desk. Minato was keeping something from her... she knew him too well. But she still had a job to do. The shinobi of the village needed her help. She wiped her eyes and spoke into the radio headset.

"The Hokage has returned to the battlefield. He's requesting the elder Ino-Shika-Cho trio's presence. Any developments while I was catching the Hokage up?"

This section's all me.

So yeah, Rusumi's here. She's a pretty recent Leaf OC that became rather important. She was created after complaints about the Hyuga clan in a little private discord group. The Gentle Fist is cool, but there's only so much you can do with it. Sure, it has techniques to deal with a crowd and/or ranged enemies, but they sound pretty inefficient chakra wise. It's a duelist fighting style, which is bad for warfare. And another part of those complaints was that nobody really uses the Byakugan to its full potential. And so the seeds that would bloom into Rusumi were planted. And yeah, a smart person using the Byakugan in this fashion would be tremendously useful, so she got an elevated role in the Leaf hierarchy pretty quickly. It also helps to have some Leaf clan members that matter who aren't just part of the direct family of Konoha 12 kids.

I can't believe Kakashi's survival in that first arc depends on a dumb fox host in an orange jumpsuit.

The Naruto mentioned in this part is not the Naruto. It's just since Minato named him after a character in Jiraiya's book, it makes sense that any son he has would have been named Naruto. Which is the case here. Tsuyu is the female lead in that one book, because there was a spinoff thing expanding that in-universe book somewhat.

The last part will have to wait for now until the invasion's over, since it refers to some things that have not occurred yet.

Arc 1: Chapter 40
Your mind was racing, trying to find a way out of Lee's technique. Despite being spun towards the ground headfirst, you saw a brief flash of Neji and Tenten. They were looking at their teammate, in their eyes was a glimmer of hope. They had...hope against you? You weren't just angry at this, you were offended! To sink so far that mere human children think they could stop you!

You'd need to prove them wrong!

Knowing the only thing trapping you was the bandages, you had the obvious and simple idea of burning them away. However, you usually needed hand seals to use jutsu, but you knew of shinobi who could simply flow elemental chakra through objects, even their body! Your training in the Sound taught you of chakra control anyway, you could do this! You closed your eyes and focused chakra into your arms, trying with difficulty to mix your element together. Without hand seals, it was proving a lot tougher, and you didn't have much time!

But then something clicked, an ancient memory of your full power coming to mind. The image of you in your true form releasing a titanic bolt of flames that set a countryside ablaze in mere seconds. Your eyes opened and you roared as not only your arms, but your entire body was now coated in your special brand of fire! The bandages wrapped around you were easily burnt away, and Rock Lee who was right next to you was being engulfed by your fiery shroud.

"LEE!" Both Neji and Tenten shouted. You were just only a few feet away from landing on the hard, unforgiving ground, so you reached for Lee and grabbed his arm, the top half of his jumpsuit was now burnt away. You felt his skin sizzle under your burning grasp and then twisted your body in a way so that Lee was now under you. Rock Lee slammed back first into the ground, with your burning body landing awkwardly on top of him. You could hear his ribs shatter as his body softened the landing for you.

Your flaming shroud quickly vanished and you got to your feet. You were exhausted by that burst of chakra, but it was well worth the effort. You looked down on the defeated genin, most of his jumpsuit was now either burnt away or melted onto his flesh and burnt flesh covered his entire torso, with a small but noticeable dent in the middle of his chest.

"GET AWAY FROM HIM!" Tenten screamed, throwing a kunai at you. You didn't bother to move and the kunai struck you in the side of your neck. A fatal blow for anyone else, but for someone blessed with immortality?

You turned your head to Tenten while ripping out the kunai from your neck with a large spray of blood. "Thank you, girl. I'll use your gift to end your friend's life."

"Hinata! Please! Don't kill Lee! I'll do anything!" Neji pleaded, reaching out his hand towards his teammate. As for Tenten, she was stunned in fear, unable to say anything else.

"Anything? Well..." you began, but then you felt something both familiar and ominous. You could feel the hair on your neck stand up and goosebumps began to pop up on your arms. There was only two things that made you feel like that, meeting Saiken during your mission for Orochimaru, and meeting Jashin in the Hot Springs Village. You remembered the Kazekage saying that The One Tail was also in the village.

"Shukaku!" you whispered to yourself. Whether it was by luck, or by him hunting you down, he was nearby. You looked at Rock Lee, unless he was given immediate attention, he would no doubt die. You were tempted by Neji's bargaining, but was now really the time?

What will you do?

Critical Moment!

[] Forget these kids. You need to focus your attention purely on Shukaku!

[] Tell Neji you'll spare Rock Lee, but one day, you'll come back for that promise of his.

[] Lee's already maimed...but make sure to leave your mark by crippling him before Shukaku gets here!

[] You'd want a more brutal way of ending Lee's life, but with Shukaku coming you'll just have to throw a kunai into his throat.

Skill Tree Guide.
i want this to give us points in man
Well this gives me a reason to make a small guide for the skill trees. While I won't ever really say which votes give what, you can pretty easily tell by how the vote is made.

Man: Usually diplomatic choices, talking and making deals.

Beast: Defensive and reactionary, lashing out to protect yourself.

Monster: Scarring and terrifying, making sure people fear you.

Demon: Sadistic and cruel, relishing in bloodshed.

With that guide, you'll probably easily pick and choose what you'd want.

-[X] Tell Neil if he wants Lee to live he'll just have to do one thing. Pluck out his own eyes here and now. Regardless of the outcome or if Neji waits to long kill Lee and tell Neji it was his fault for trusting us/waiting too long/not keeping to his words

This should be... demonic? Monstrous? Either way I feel it fits more IC with kurama then taking nothing at all

Arc 1: Chapter 41
+2 Monster, +1 Demon
---

A sadistic grin carved itself on your face. "Anything? Then if you don't want me to end this disgusting creature's life, I demand that you tear out your eyes."

Both Neji and Tenten looked shocked at the request, their minds sent spinning at the demand. Neji managed to gain what little composure he had left and took off his headband, revealing a large seal on his forehead. "I-I can't! Hinata, you should know! I'm of the side branch of the Hyuga, this seal would activate if I tried to take out my eyes!"

"I don't see how it's my problem. Oh well, I guess your friend dies then," you casually said, with the same emotional importance as if you were doing a daily chore. You raised the kunai and was about to throw it into Lee's neck, but Neji cried out again.

"Stop! I know what to do! Tenten...please...you have to take out my eyes!" Neji declared, looking right at Tenten.

"Neji! What are you saying?!" Tenten shouted in surprise. "You can't expect me to-"

"You have ten seconds. If that boy's eyes aren't on the floor by then, Lee dies." You firmly said, unleashing your killing intent as a period to that statement. "Ten. Nine. Eight..."

As you continued counting down, Neji handed Tenten a nearby kunai and gave her a nod, telling her he was ready. Tears streamed down Tenten's face, grasping the kunai. After a few moments, she shook her head, her will was simply too weak to do what needed to be done.

"Three. Two. One..." you finished, Tenten sobbing loudly as Neji called out Lee's name as loud as he could. It was at that moment the earth rose under you, creating a pillar that slammed into your chest and sent you into the air before landing painfully on the ground. That ominous feeling was now in full force and you knew who it was.

"S-Shukaku!" you gasped through pained wheezes, the earth pillar knocking the wind out of you.

Shukaku's Theme

"Yep, just who I expected!" A boy's voice rang out. It was loud and wild, although the voice was different, his way of speaking remained the same. As you recovered and got to your feet, you saw a boy around the same age as your vessel. He had spiky reddish brown hair and bright blue eyes and was wearing a red overcoat over a tan shirt and black pants. Next to him was a very tall man who was covered in a tan cloak and mask to hide everything about him except for his eyes, which were bright green with red sclerae.

"Thank you for saving-" Tenten began, but Shukaku unleashed his killing intent while glaring at the girl, shutting her up instantly.

"I didn't do that for you, I did it to fuck with Kurama! Now you three little shits better get out of here, me and him are gonna have a nice family reunion!" Shukaku declared. Neji and Tenten were confused, but knew they didn't have the time to think about it. They moved over to their broken teammate and vanished with a puff of smoke. Shukaku turned his attention back towards you and whistled appreciatively.

"You got a real hot vessel, Kurama. Reminds me of my last body, it was also a woman. Got nailed by so many dudes it's a miracle that body lasted as long as it did!" Shukaku laughed wildly. "But now I have a male body, I'm ready to start giving instead of taking! What do you say, Kurama? How about we take this battle to the bedroom?"

"I'd rather be imprisoned and tortured than spend another moment with you." you coldly said, utterly disgusted by Shukaku's offer. It was then you reached into your tool pouch and grabbed one of your soldier pills, eating it to replenish your chakra. You knew a fight was going to happen, and you weren't going to start weakened!

"Oh, you're into that kinky shit, eh? Don't worry babe, I got all the shackles, chains, and whips you could ever ask for!" Shukaku replied lewdly. "Oh well, I knew you wouldn't go for it, but you miss every shot you don't take, y'know? So tell me brother, what have you been doing all this time? It's been decades since we've seen each other!"

"None of your fucking business." you bluntly and rudely said.

"Sore spot, eh? But I think I can guess. Knowing you, the little firecracker that you are...you were chained by the Leaf, huh? You couldn't keep that wrath of your down, always had to be the big dick bijuu? And it got you...imprisonment for years. I'd ask if I'm right, but seeing the fury in your eyes and the amount of killing intent you're releasing...I know I am!" Shukaku arrogantly, yet correctly guessed.

"SHUT THE FU-"

"Poor Kurama, still thinks he's the strongest. Sorry, little fox. We Bijuu have new lives now in these human bodies! I was like you first time around, tried to flaunt my power and all it did was get my ass kicked and sent into prison. But see, I'm smart. Unlike you. I learned my lesson. I kept my head down afterward. Soon, the Sand let me walk free again. As long as I wasn't causing an uproar, the Sand let me be. In return, I do a few missions for them. Simple business. In fact I even started my own business! A company known as the Black Scorpions, we're a new, but upcoming figure in the criminal underworld." Shukaku explained. "So Kurama, I'll extend an offer, you can join me and-"

"I'd never join you. Go fuck yourself!" you hissed, your fury reaching a boiling point. The weakest of all Bijuu, a demon with only one tail, thinks he can talk like this to you?! How fucking dare he!

"Expected, but oh well. You know, I do wonder how you got out of prison. Did you...finally bow your head like a beaten dog? Did you let the guards run the gauntlet on your hot bod? Or maybe...did one of them just feel pity to the once great and mighty Kurama?" Shukaku said, starting a chuckle that climbed upwards into full mad laughter.

"DIE!" you roared as you began your first move!

What will you do?

[] Erase Shukaku with your Wrathful Fire Stream!

[] Activate your Cursed Seal, then your Flaming Fists of Destruction and attack Shukaku at close range!

[] Go to the second level of your Cursed Seal and rip Shukaku apart!

[] Use your Phoenix Sage Fire jutsu to distract Shukaku, then strike while he's busy defending himself!
