Cat and Mouse (Legend of Five Rings)

@Wade Garrett
I was thinking about taking bad eyesight and fluffing it as blind because it is to easy to negated for my character and fluffwise hte idea that the whispering of the Kamis is helping me move after I stared to long in the sun is a nice one. But I am unsure if it is to Anime for you.

We have a semi-bullshit Shinjo Kakita horse archer. I'm not sure if Way of the Ki-Rin means that when I spend a void point for one of my school skills I get +4k1, or +4k4. Either way, with some of my skills spending a void point means I trigger the ten-dice rule, it's just a matter of whether it's 10k6 or 10k9

Also thinking about swapping Bad Fortune for something else, perhaps Disbeliever (And apparently you can take Dark Secret about your status as a non-believer, which just strikes me as wrong) or True Love, or Cursed by the Realm:Gaki-Do.

Okay, infodump:

In Legend of Five Rings, if you insult somebody, or they insult you, or we need to establish guilt or innocence...for various and sundry social and political reasons, you can wind up in an iaijitsu duel, which is fought on foot with katanas according to very specific rules.

The Kakita Bushi school of the Crane Clan is the acknowledged best of the best in setting at these duels both IC and OOC, because all their techniques are basically "You're bullshit good at iaijitsu duels."

In comparison, your Kakita horse archer, while good at archery and horse riding...in an iaijitsu duel the rest of his family will eat him alive.

You don't. By spending a Void Point as a Shinjo Bushi you don't get Xk1 or XkX where X is your Horsemanship Skill Rank; you get 1k1+X in which X is your Horsemanship Skill Rank. If it did, it would mention that you add rolled and/or kept dice equal to your Horsemanship when spending Void.

So yeah, not as crazy as you originally thought it was. R1 abilities tend to be weaksauce, but thematic. In this case your ability is to horse good and horsing better is better for everything else you do.

Put the sheet together and let me have a look see. That is...I'd need to see it in context of the rest of your sheet to make an informed judgment call.

On the topic of duels, you can engage in other forms of dueling; you just need to have both parties agree to it (which is admittedly not very common due to Crane dominance of Rokugani culture and their emphasis on iaijutsu duels). For example among the Mantis you have the Whirlwind Fighters/Duelists who are Mantis duelists that fight with kama instead of the katana. Understandably, they only do so amongst the Mantis themselves.

Yeah, we really could use a bullshit Kakita. Ho hum!

Well, yes. That's to be expected. (Also the Iaijitsu skill in the d20 version was broken). Iaijitsu is the skill of formal dueling, and it is to be expected that Crane and Phoenix, with their relatively safe lands, would focus on such. Meanwhile, Mantis, Crab, and Unicorn all say that dueling and real fighting are two different things, so they're going to teach their members how to fight instead of how to duel.

Faro knows he doesn't know how to duel, and so will both be trying to learn that along with other courtly manners while trying to avoid anything that would provoke a duel.

Oh. That makes more sense and is a hell of a lot less bullshit.

Remember that the Crane way to murder someone is to edge him on until he calls you out in a duel or someone fights one on your behalf and then you get your Kakita bodyguard to make kebab out of the victim.

Twenty Questions
1. What Clan does your Character belong to.
He was born and raised in the Crane

2. What Family does your Character belong to.
The Kakita Family Tree. Relatively far removed from the "important" clanmembers. A far cousin/similar to most.

3. Is your Character a Bushi, A shugenja or a Courtier?
He was trained as a Bushi. A Duelist, to be more specific.

4. How would others describe your Character's apperance?
"Damn Crane Pretty Boys" would come to mind. They are not far wrong. He has dark eyes and, undyed, would have gorgeous black hair. With the hair dyed white and fashionably past-shoulder long, he looks like an archetypical Crane. That is kind of intentional and because he copies the stance and aloof gaze of his superiors in the clan.

5. What is your Character's Primary Motivation?
Sushiro understands the tactic of the "Open Insult, Hidden Duelist" that the Crane oftentimes use at court in order to shame/outright kill individuals. When he was forced to act as the Cranes sword shortly after his Gempukku against an equally young man of the Dragon whose fault was nothing but to be the scion of a political enemy, something inside him changed. He has studied Bushido thoroughly and tries to understand Honor and avoid to be used in what he understands as "political murders".

6. Who is the Person your Character trusts most in the World.
His Sister, Kamuni. Who, despite being younger, oftentimes acts as a wise sage when he feels troubled.

7. What is your Characters Greatest Strength and Weakness?
Sushiro seeks to overly trust newcomers. He is not completly unable to be without distrust, but his attempt, at almost all times, to be even-handed when meeting someone new, could be seen as both his greatest Strength and Weakness.

8. What does your Character think of Bushido?
He follows it. Compassion seems to be the one he tries to live up to. Courtesy and Honesty the ones he seems most apt to naturally.
Courage he tries not to think about and simply to find his balance when he is in inner turmoul.

9. What is your Character's opinion of his Clan?
The greatest artists and duelists and courtiers. A powerful clan. But the practice of "sniping" off political enemies by either the swift blade of the Kakita or the vicious mockery of the courts disturbs him. He does not voice that opinion out loud.

10. Is your Character Married?
No. Promised, however, to a 13 year-old girl from the Crane, but a different family. It is, naturally, an arranged marriage of political nature. He will think about it when she is closer to actually coming of Age.

11. Does your Character have any Prejudices?
He tries to be as even-handed as possible and treat everyone on their virtue alone.... Having said that: Bloody Mantis with their peasent-weapons and them cutting into Crane-trade. They are sometimes unbearable.

12. To whom does your Character owe the most Loyality?
He tries to avoid thinking about that his family can use him as a murderer whenever they desire and so plays up his desire to go into art so that he can study instead of standing around and wait to stand-in as a duelist.

13 What are your Character's Favourite and Least favourite things?
Theatre-Performances are highest on his list, followed by a few dozen other arts and things. Just because he has an excuse of using art does not mean that he honestly does not enjoy it.
He never really warmed up to horses. Something about them.

14. Does your Character have any recurring Mannerisms?
When he is at ease, he folds his hands behind his back while walking. He actually was warned against that often because it makes a quick sword-draw awkwardly difficult.

15. What about your Character's Emotions?
He smiles often when excited and will display a borderline improper amount of emotions when it comes to something he likes. But it can be excused with his young age.

16. How would your Character handle a Subordinate's Improper Behaviour?
"Do it again properly." He luckily was never ranked high enough to order anyones death nor found it necessary. Occasionally he smacks people with a fan when they did something upsetting.

17. How would your Character's Parents describe him?
That the boy will do well once he gets his head out of the clouds. But they do love him. But as much as they cherish him and his ways, they are not going to protect him from his own choices anymore.

18. What is your Character's Highest Ambition?
He always flusters and stutters when this comes up in conversation. His usual answer then becomes "being considered as Clan Champion". But he actually would enjoy a life on the countryside, residing over a lot of land with a wife and some children. Eventually.

19. How Religious is your Character?
Not particulary, but he tends towards the teachings of the "little Teacher" and reaching Enlightnment. Not that he particulary works towards that goal actively.

20. How will your Character die?
Needlessly. Defending words ment as an attack. And albeit he will do so bravely, on his path he will ponder if this is really all that life has granted him: A strong, swift arm, a name of glory and a short usage as an Iaijutsu-duelist before he is used up.

Initiative: 4k3 + 6
Katana to-hit: 6k3
Katana Damage: 6k2
Armor TN: 20+5 (Armor)
Damage Reduction: 3 in armor

One Paper-Crane, coming up.

//Small edit. Exchanged Sensation with Soul of Artistry, same points for Crane

Oh thank the Kami we got a Kakita Duelist. Okay everyone, we can start subtly insulting everyone we met again.
I think in some cases, Faro's very presence might count as a subtle insult. And yes, I am going to be really playing up the whole "Raised by Wolves Unicorns" thing.

And, well, you can probably turn Iaijitsu duels into other sorts of duels by hinting that perhaps the reason your esteemed opponent wants to fight with swords is that they have let other aspects of being a samurai slide. There's no garuntee that it'd turn out well for us, though.

As for plotting out interactions, I see Faro getting along quite well with Kazuki, and more begrudgingly tolerating Sushiro. Natsumi has a lot of training in stuff he hasn't trained in, but Faro would consider her to lack some essential skills (no doubt like how Natsumi is probably sightly appalled that Faro doesn't know certain finer points of courtly behavior and etiquette.) Yoichi is someone he could warm up to over time. And I just realized that we're overloaded on Bushi.

Natsumi is going to be fascinated with all these strange, strange bushi. Kazuki in particular; she's read too many pillowbooks about lovable rogues.

Not really.

The Crane Clan has put centuries of work into making iaijitsu the only legitimate form of dueling recognized across Rokugan to prevent that, not to mention that "Maybe you use a sword too much, eh, eh?"....

That's the symbols of your honor and soul you're talking about, possession of which marks a character as a samurai. Maybe you could taunt somebody from the newly minted Wasp Clan into an archery duel with that gambit, but "Taunt the Tsurichi into an archery duel" is not what I personally would call a good idea.

I think you're more likely to get variant duel types off of courtiers. Go is an acceptable substitute should you wish the challenge to be one of wits and tradition rather than sword and tradition, but it's still a far, far secondary option.

There are instances where prominent Daimyo hosting court will officiate matters by saying "You duel in the way we prefer to do it around here," but for the most part Wade is correct and Iaijutsu is the name of the game. However, that exception I noted can sometimes cause hilarious situations like a duel in Crab lands leading to settling these matters of honor with tetsubo.

Roughly when do you think you'll call it? I realize the post only went up yesterday, I'm just excited! It's been a while since I've played L5R - also as a Doji courtier, but of a very different stripe - and I rather miss it.

In regards to the party composition I am building a Centipede trained Shugenja, praise Lady Amaterasu.

And in regards to duels, remember that there is nothing like "the one that was called out choses the form of the duel" it is always swords drawn unless both parties decided something else together or the daiymo did it , even if the later can be a loss of face for him. Crab and Lions for example uses heavy armor and heavy weapons in internal duels, Mantis there Kamas and the Unicorn do it atop a horse.

 Awww shucks.

I'm probably going to hold off picking players until Friday or Saturday of this week, to give @Scia @Maugan Ra and anyone else who hasn't gotten their sheet together a chance.

Any comments or what to improve? I am kind of at a loss if there is a giant backstory needed or if the blanks can be filled out during play or at whim
