PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

The Royals are probably being watched by whatever secret police there is so better to avoid them.

If we can meet Alfonsina, we just say "Hey I heard you made a neat thing, can you tell me more about the neat thing?" ( In much the same way to find out TOP SECRET AKITSUKUNI AIRPLANE SHIT is to slide up to Asuka and make inquiring noises about airplanes and hope one can take notes fast enough.)

Oh gosh. We'll have to pretend to stomach socialism. This is truly an immense burden, but for the sake of Akitsukuni, we'll manage somehow.

:p

The only problem I can see is if certain people notice we know too much about it. :V

Don't have a strong opinion as to who else.

The Prince is disqualified immediately for reason of being a Prince instead of a Princess.

The important question, of course, is which of these two is more able to seduce Aiko and Haruna. I suspect that we'll do better with the engineer, personally - expert engineers are typically quite easy to get ranting.

Also, if we can get her to defect, it'd be pretty funny to send Matsuda a fire-control engineer as a peace offering. "Hey, sorry about the whole thing, can I offer you someone who specializes in analog computers so you can build fancy fly-by-wire airplanes a hundred years ahead of schedule?"

That'd be one way to get blackmail material. Send someone on a "secret assignment", and then have their handler report on them for having socialist ties.

Hopefully we won't run into someone expressing nationalistic imperialism with a side of socialism or else Haruna might have a hard time holding back.

So Aolfosina could simultaneously improve the utility of the Akitsukuni capital surface fleet and hasten its doom by making airplanes easier to design? I suspect Haruna is going to be sad if she never gets a dreadnought/battleship command.

The most obvious thing to do if we wanted to get onto a battleship for a secret look at it's fire control system is to ask the person who lets people onto battleships for looks at their fire control systems. Therefore, don't do that!

I thought that this was an update for Lieutenant Fusilier and got really confused when the chapter started in a hotel room. It took me a few seconds staring at Aiko's name before I realised where I was lul.

Each choice has their own pros and cons. The Office will probably catch on immediately, but they also represent the most straightforward approach to getting on the vessel. However, they will control our access which limits the utility of the information we gather. The Designer could a great asset if we can flip them. The Prince could brute force the issue with pure clout, but if they find out that we're spying this will go very badly for us, lots of unintended political consequences.

I'm assuming that both the Prince and the Designer are already being monitored by their own internal counter-intelligence organizations, and are under far greater scrutiny than the Officer. It's the option with the lowest risk, so I'm thinking that they are the safest approach.

And the consequences might go as far as impacting Otrusian domestic politics. Just imagine the public backlash against the Monarchy if it becomes widely known the Prince is responsible for an intelligence leak of this magnitude.

I don't really care which other approach gets taken but those only get us a chance to see the what. She's the one who knows the why and the how, unless we can corner a junior officer.

I honestly think it might do us some good to have a real friendship with a socialist monarchy's prince, since that is where our sympathies are leaning. This could be a supportive thing long into the future.

Here's something completely unrelated, but which almost wrote itself once I thought of it:

Dear Ota,

My "peasant girlfriend" and I are getting married. You aren't invited. This is for several reasons:

  1. My cousin, Her Imperial Majesty, is attending, and her guards would kill you as soon as you were recognized.
  2. As soon as it was realized that I had actually invited you, my mother would kill me out of shame.
  3. Assuming you managed to escape the guards, or otherwise escape detection, I imagine that your comrades would kill you after discovering where you had been.
I hope this adequately explains why, while I did consider inviting you, it was only for a few microseconds. On the other hand, if you see Kwon, and he's interested in attending, have him write me; I'll see what I can do. I'm somewhat restricted by the risk of my mother having some sort of aneurysm.

Best regards,
Her Highness Lieutenant Arisugawa Haruna
