PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

I don't want to become a misogynist or go on a bender!

Or be a strict as nails drill sergeant type!

Or get drummed back to trash assignments again!

Or get emotionally involved at a whorehouse or something!

All of these options suck in their own unique way, well played... At least some of the stress is going away?

We voted for not drinking and we're allowed to drink? Alright, guess we'll drink. Minimal professional consequences and we don't cheat on Aiko. Whatever we do though, I'm not taking it out on the enlisted men.

Oh boy it's too late for that!

It's sorta a last hurrah... involving being drunk for basically weeks on end. So, I have a feeling that something important will come and go while we're sloshed.

EDIT:

I honestly like Only the Lonely and the bender as interesting narrative options.

Also going full drill sergeant might be interesting, although it'll hurt our standing with the enlisted. It's also the unlikely to negatively impact our career because iron discipline and abuse by superiors is sort of matter of course

Depending on how the exact effects of drilling the crew pan out, it might be a feather in our cap for the old guard of the Admiralty?

I'm kinda leaning towards that option in a "Haruna indulges her warrior princess aspirations" sort of way. Of course, the crew will hate us. It is the smallest possible command in the remotest possible setting, so least damage to be done on an interpersonal level.

I'm leaning towards the blender, since it does state we stop after a couple of weeks. Even if we become an alcoholic, it is something we can overcome with time and effort.

Cheating is unacceptable, and the other options have worse and longer lasting consequences IMO.

I'm personally leaning towards the brothel, partially for drama, partially because it's the least likely to immediately explode in our faces.

The bender is bad in that we might form a habit from it and/or we miss an important war event whilst pissed.

The taskmaster one, while our crew will despise us and make our short-term work conditions strenuous, won't affect long term goals, career or personal relationships.

I'm tempted by taskmaster, followed by bender. Lonely and HR are unpalatable, and I'm struggling to not use harsher language here.

WTF did you guys do?

I really should probably participate more closely in quests I follow, because aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

We were at 9 Stress, and we could have done basically nothing in exchange for keeping at 9 Stress and not having a Breakdown, thus remaining always one mistake away from falling to pieces at the worst possible moment... or we could push ourselves over the limit and just accept the consequences in exchange for going to 0 stress and not having to, pun intended, stress about it for a while.

Or, that's the logic/discussion.

Personally, I prefer Only the Lonely. It will probably cause massive relationship problems, but I would rather deal with those problems than the others.

I want to avoid alcoholism (and extended benders). The 'get angry with men' option is... honestly, pretty valid given the shit she's been through, but it could absolutely tank her career and political cred. I really don't want her to become as brutally strict as that fascist cousin of hers.

Going to HR is a strategic mistake, but it's one I respect. That captain was an ass, and Haruna has legitimate complaints (that still won't go over well).

So, yeah, I'll vote for the prostitutes* or the HR complaint.

*I'd feel so much better about this if I knew what the working conditions were like at the local brothel. It's 'unregulated' and I don't know if that means 'they don't pay taxes' or if it means 'hell on Earth'.

Oh, the moratorium is over, so...
[X] Only the lonely

We killed a destroyer, crippled a cruiser, and almost died! We're princess! Use some of that cred to declare a party! We can use that as an excuse to drink!

And get everyone else drinking too!

I'm tempted between only the lonely for drama and more plot threads and going drill sergeant on our ship cause I like drill sergeant characters in fiction.
