PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

[X] karuna and her crewmen organize a mild debauchery party to celebrate surviving the battle with care packages from home.

I need to look up the exact rules again but my understanding was that when a Vice becomes an Addiction you stop losing stress for indulging it and start gaining stress for not indulging it, meaning if we want to have "get drunk" as a -1 Stress option after the next traumatic event it is critical that we not let it hit Addiction status.
It's my understanding that having a Vice as an Addiction means we still can use it to reduce stress, but failing to indulge in it generates stress.

-[X] Haruna needs a fucking drink. (-1 Stress)
-[X] Pass it off to Ishinari. He can handle it.
-[X] You don't care. You don't need to make friends here.
-[X] Commend him, but keep him here. You need as many good sailors as you can keep.
-[X] You need some downtime. (-1 stress)

She stared death in the mouth and came out of it mostly intact. I think she can stand to have a drink to help with coping.

[X] Plan Break Down And Dry Up

Put simply, breaking down now is so much better than the alternatives.

The breakdown will have us choose between addiction, losing stat points, messing up friendships, and so on.
The non-breakdown plans have us making enemies and losing stat points and still put us at high stress by the end of it.

[ ] Haruna decides to write out a formal complaint for the behavior of The Captain, with no plans to do anything with it. She leaves it in a sealed envelope on her desk to take care of later.

[X] Plan Break Down And Dry Up

Leaving aside the other (good) arguments made on this front, I find a certain appeal in the notion of Haruna remaining level-headed and effective all through that mess of a battle...only to burn out on mundane overwork in the aftermath.

Oh, breakdowns aren't bad. I thought breakdowns were bad. Frankly in hindsight we should have gone for it after the loss of the guns, we'd still have been shipped off to the combat stress hospital but we'd have come out with 0 stress.

[x] Plan I WILL DO IT ALL

Honestly I'm actually banking on the drinking problem here. I think it's easier to get rid of and less bad for us and our career than losing a friend or a stat point.

[] Haruna walks to the shrine, half drunk, in the middle of the night and collapses before it, accusing the gods and spirits that it's all a bit much, praying for some fucking mercy. She wakes on the hill, to a beautiful sunrise and a pounding headache.

PS: One of the options gives us 1 streess, and a stat point. One of the options for a breakdown are losing a stat point. Said option is thus worth -9 stress.

Math. Every step is mathematically true, yet not really a good reflection of reality, right?

-10 stress because the breakdown is applied after the stress gain per the action at the guns. However, there's no guarantee a stat decrease will be offered since it's only an example and they do want to make us make difficult choices. I suspect that we're not going to be allowed to take down the stat we just increased, break off our thirty second friendship with Ishinari and Nishamoto or do anything else that's net neutral.

[X] Plan Break Down And Dry Up

Tenatively voting this right now, but I would like to put forward one thing.

I really think we should take the stat point. 1 Stat point for 1 Stress is a bargain that doesn't come along every day, and can make Haruna much more effective going forward.

[] Plan Break Down And Dry Up

I'd like to go for the plus one stat point but going sober is more valuable to me and this feels the most likely to happen

Honestly, I just want to see how it shakes down. The fact that it'll mean we can get back to being a little fast and loose instead of constantly worrying about our stress levels is just a bonus.

[X] You should probably apologize. Again. To both of them. And make an effort to be friendlier to Nashimoto. You shouldn't let on that you know he's afraid of you, but maybe being friendly and spending time with the two of them will help make things less awkward. (+1 Stress)
[X] Commend him, but keep him here. You need as many good sailors as you can keep.
[X] Keep up intense exercises and training. Hit the books. (+1 Stress, +1 to a stat)

What are you guys willing to lose in this breakdown? Aiko? An arm? Haruna's career? Her friendship with the Empress? It's going to be a hefty price, one way or another. Just be sure you're willing to pay it.

You're fearmongering.

We have examples, and they're not as severe.

Then, we give you a series of choices. All of them will have long-term consequences, and they will vary depending on the situation. In a post like this, you might choose between Haruna gaining an addiction, losing a stat point from not keeping up training, messing up a friendship, or entering a new situation unready. In combat, it might be various injuries Haruna would take as the threshold is crossed.
