PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

[X] Yeah, sorry. I gotta at least show up and keep appearances.

This said, I kinda want Haruna to go in with the clear and obvious intention of being like, "No, I am only here because I did not want to insult you. I have no intention of pursuing a relationship, either political or romantic with you."

OR, she goes in and they spend the entire time talking about Kenshin. With Haruna completely blanking any sort of romantic conversation and bluntly changing the subject.

Not only is it Shinzo, I'd like to remind you that he's the guy who Haruna plucked out of freezing water about a year back. He's also currently buds with Kenshin.
MMMMMmmmmm!!!

Rrrrrr. He seemed like a decent guy.

Why must you make this so hard? Now I can't in good conciseness just blow him off. It's been all set up and he at least deserves a straight answer.

[X] Yeah, sorry. I gotta at least show up and keep appearances.

Here's where he's introduced. Matsura has a date with him in the next update, and then I don't think we see him again, so there's not much to say. Likes planes a bit too much for Haruna's tastes.
The date might not go disastrously. I'm bad at reading people, but he seemed decent in the other quest. I don't think he tried to pressure Matsura or anything.

Maybe he's willing to play along with the date for political reasons without being an ass?

Or a gay one, as the case may be.
Well, either way, we should at least meet him face to face.
In the other quest, we ostensibly had a company function, duty calls and such, but here we can't just blow him off by telegram or not reply at all. He doesn't deserve that.

[] Yeah, sorry. I gotta at least show up and keep appearances.

You know what? Even if marriage is absolutely off the table, maybe we can poach him.

Ugh. I don't see what bending to pressure here gets us, besides away from our girlfriend, again. We know ooc this isn't going anywhere, but the implicit message of "yeah our mom does get to tell us to leave you alone" undermines our dialogue in the last update pretty thoroughly. We are accepting that we don't need to be consulted about our own romantic engagements if we accept this date, and I hate that.

The absolute 300IQ move here is actually to go, bring Aiko, set Aiko and Shinzo up and then marry Aiko since she's the wife of a prominent industrialist and therefore a suitable match for a princess.

Blowing Mum off and then going on a date with him tomorrow is also hilarious and serves our political aims even better, but is probably not an amazing idea.

Can we reply that just arrived home and it would be much better for our constitution if we waited for a little longer?
It doesn't hurt Shinzo, we can spend the day with Aiko, and we flip the bird at mom all at once.
Or, just send him a telegraph directly, and see if he's up for tea later. It doesn't have to be anything, just two sailors talking shop and being an understanding ear as we both bitch about navy problems.

Do we actually have to go on the date? Can't we just show up, apologize, and leave? He seems like a cool guy. He'd understand.

Blowing this off seems like something that'd give us stress once the consequences hit.

Yeah, ducking this is probably going to cause even bigger problems down the road, given that father admiral is our boss
