PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

Eh, I imagine Allegheny is slowly dragging itself forward into the light of federalization, even if they're still holding onto the crazy triumvirate presidency and fun stuff like that. They've probably got a great big jurisdictional mess on every level, and then a few dozen special agents in the new Bureau of Investigations, Criminal. Hard men and women smoking hard cigars, doing hard paperwork and of course, making hard choices.

Like, I imagine after the civil war they probably put a little work into making the separate federations more "voting blocks" and less "micronations."

It's probably not that easy, there is absolutely no way that the Purity faction don't have pull in the army and civilian government that would argue for a closed trial or to just stone wall any attempt at persecuting their own under excuses of not wanting to appear weak to foreigners or other.

Enough to overrule our Cousin (May She Reign for Ten Thousand Years!)? Because this was a clear attempt to sideline her. She is gonna want payback.

A public trial is actually probably the last thing the Imperial families want. It'd be a huge scandal for the Imperial household, which is supposed to be nice and politely conservative/apolitical if they're not actually involved in politics as an MP or something.

Ahhh, I was trying to avoid a martyr. Helluva lot more dishonorable to be captured and put to a public trial, but I'll trust your word on the matter.

Maintaining face in public is a huge deal in Akitsukuni culture. It's part of why Haruna has been so hesitant to actually commit to Aiko. Because it doesn't just reflect on her but her whole family.

it's important to remember the Empress only has soft power and it's often a sort of blunt instrument. if she used her power to target individuals or political parties overtly she wouldn't have it anymore. most of what she can do is issue public statements of support or veiled criticism and let the public pressure do the work for her.

that can get a lot done, but it's not super efficient for matters like this

She can also quietly lean on the government and cabinet since she meets the prime minister every week and the whole cabinet like, bi-weekly. Doing that is a very blunt use of her power, though. Her role is to "advise and guide" the government elected by the Diet, not to give it orders.

There's also a difference between saying like "We believe that improving the speed at which the country is electrified would be beneficial to Our subjects and the nation, if such a thing is possible." and "We wish to see the Purity Club and Communists eliminated." in one of those meetings.

Her predecessor was pretty big into the constitution and avoiding dictatorial power because of the previous experience with the Shogunate and the civil wars.

Thanks for the plot idea. :D
I have far too much respect for you to think you hadn't already thought of that.

and yet the real FBI exists...
Not in 1910 it didn't. Even aside from New Alleghany being more decentralized than the historical US, in 1910 the US was even more decentralized. There were some federal law enforcement agents, but they had very limited remit and handled very specific things.

Though to be fair, gunrunning and customs violation might be one of them.

I don't mean to be rude here, but it would be extremely silly for anyone to try and make a case that Arisukawa-no-miya Haruna-hime was a secret Anarchist based on one book she checked out from the Navy. For one thing, if she was a secret Anarchist she would do a better job of hiding it. For another, her family is well-respected and well-connected and everyone who isn't a Purity Club crackpot would laugh the idea right out of the room.

So no, it wasn't a plot idea that we'd thought of.

The nazis are bad umkay but at some level I want to see the world burn because it makes for interesting plot so I propose joining the purity club.
It's clear to me that the post war economic crash is going to give power to the nazis or the comies so I say join the one least likely to chop ur heads of when they come to power and do it early to gain a high up position.

[x] plan chaos is a ladder

P.S. I'm writing this for the giggles/ alternate history if you people actually vote for this I will be impressed

I'm not sure if Allegheny can have an FBI. Their entire thing is having a nearly incompetent federal system.
Welcome to early twentieth century "technocratic deep state bureaucracy"
Like, I imagine after the civil war they probably put a little work into making the separate federations more "voting blocks" and less "micronations."
Don't think there's anything micro about the confederations. In terms of area, Hawkeye is at least equal to Gallia and Hesperia combined. (Plus whatever the eastern seaboard has in terms of population...)

there is tragically nothing alternate about the history where the purity club gets power

I think you mean "dismayed and outraged."

There is much power in the dark side

As I said at a certain level seeing the world burn would make me happy because of the interesting plot point that would come out of it.
Like trying to do the wright thing when it's the thing that will get you killed or perhaps joining the resistance.

I mean. Not when it's spun as blatantly as that.

If I were the Purity Club spin artist I'd go with something like.

"The princess has obviously made a noble effort to surpass the limitations of her sex. But due to her lack of a head for high politics and military affairs, she has equally obviously fallen prey to the subversive mutters of sailors like the brother of notorious anarchist murderer Ota Tetsuo, and the corrupting wiles of foreigners like the dastardly Joseon malcontent Kwon Ji-Hu, now safely in Tokketai custody. These schemers, and perhaps others yet undetected, seem to have found little difficulty in poisoning Princess Haruna against her own cousin, so deluding her as to his intentions that she has now made slanderous mischaracterizations of his good faith effort to secure the safety of the Imperial family against utterly predictable communist riots. Yet again, it is clear for all to see that women and the complex affairs of warfare and high politics do not mix, and how easily even the best-intentioned of women are tricked into acting against their own homes and families when they step outside their rightful sphere."

[X] This is a matter of honour inside the Navy. You and Kenshin can handle it. (Prowess roll.)

Let's go show our cousin who has the real balls in this crew!

KOGO HEIKA, BANZAI!

Can we please stop with the OOC chucklefuckery? The chances of Haruna joining the Purity Club are non-existent, and yes, while we do have enemies, we also have allies, otherwise we never would have been allowed to join the Navy in the firstplace.

It is getting tiring hearing this shit over and over again.

I have a question the empress can't say purge the purity party but can she for example at a dinner party with the admirals tell them hey don't you think this person is acting rather silly.

I think this could be a good way to use our sway with the empress
