Breaking Destiny (Fire Emblem: Awakening Quest)

[X][Risen Ambush] You agree with your father's plan. You'll stay behind and deal with the invading group from within the camp while Henry deals with the Sage's group.
- [X][Risen Ambush] You'll use your Thunder Tome to kill the invading Risen.
-- [X][Risen Ambush] You'll use your Nosferatu Tome when you are hurt.

you'll basically just fail to cast it on yourself and then go to use the other spell listed in the plan.
Ok, so if there isn't many downsides to failing to cast it, then shouldn't it become auto-casted when Leonard believes it would be a good idea unless voted otherwise? I mean, i remember it was something like it, as in we wouldn't need to vote to use it before so, and i doubt we would be able to properly change the tide of the votes now, since with this information we should always start stacking murder of crows before imminent battle and there isn't any downside to cast thunder armor toghether with thunder, other than limited charges.

The difference between Thunder and Flux here should be minor enough that we can afford to skill grind it here considering we can fall back to Nosferatu here.

Off the top of my head, thunder is slightly weaker than flux as a tome in the first place, we also are 1-2 ranks higher with flux than thunder (Intermediate with flux but our thunder is either untrained still or novice) and we have a bonus to using using dark magic rather than anima magic in the first place.

Id guess this (overall) would lead to a noticeable gap between the two.

Edit-looked into more solid numbers: thunder has 2 less MT and is Intermediate while thunder is novice. Combined with an additional +5 for using dark magic over anima.

Technically if we wanna really start hitting people we have our unique spell tome to fall back on. 12 MT at base with additional discovered combos with Flux and Thunder aint anything to sneeze at.

That's fair, yeah. Honestly, the only reason I had it up as an action to vote for would be so that if you wanted to use it at a certain time, then you would be able to do so instead of successfully using it too early or too late in a battle, where it wouldn't impact things too heavily compared to whenever you wanted to use it.

Might do some changes regarding certain spells/mechanics to make things a little more balanced, we'll see how things go.

Anyways, I know that I was originally going to close the vote tomorrow, but I'm deciding to close the vote now as it's been more than a day since the last vote was posted and the plan of attack seems to be generally agreed upon (also gives me a bit more time to write up the update :V).

The plan Henry presented was reasonable, with the meager amount of time he had to put into it at least.

He would go out and deal with the now undead Sage and the accompanying group of resurrected Risen, eliminating the source of the problem before it worsened in any way. While he was to be doing so, you would be staying within the boundaries of the camp, killing any Risen that invaded in the meantime.

Due to his vast experience and variety of spells, your father would be the one to take on the Sage, along with him being far more experienced when engaging enemy mages, something which you had absolutely zero experience with prior to training with him.

...On that note, you wanted to rebuke that by mentioning that sparring with your father counted as engaging an enemy mage, but you didn't say that out loud due to not wanting to hurt your father's feelings. Additionally, you didn't want to get hit by a coincidentally stray curse or hex.

Regardless of his rationale, you immediately asked to go with him. Yet despite your vain attempts to join his crusade of explosions and the epic battle against the undead magician, he profusely refused due to not wanting to catch you in the crossfire.

His main justification for you staying within the camp, however, was quite insightful. While you performed decently well within the sandstorm against the bandits from earlier–as well as one's first battle could be, at any rate–you had far more combat experience when not blinded by what was basically the 'Fog of War', something that was heavily in play here.

Although there was a dust storm occuring within the area of the camp, it wasn't as intense as the sandstorm still raged on. You could still relatively see and react to things from within the dust storm, but as evidenced earlier, you couldn't see anything within the sandstorm–such as various projectiles or sneak attacks–until it was far too late to react properly.

All in all, it was a simple, yet effective plan.

"Alright, father," you acquiesced, not willing to argue any further or create a more convoluted plan with the threat of Risen looming on the back of your necks.

You withdrew your Thunder and Nosferatu Tomes from within the tatters of your cloak, the latter of which felt unusually satisfying compared to the roughness of the former. By that, you meant when casting spells and the overall feel of the book.

Dark magic spells would fly more smoothly and have a far larger impact in terms of damage, along with having a greater effect when compared to Thunder spells, which were more… imperfect in comparison.

Also, it was far more comfortable to hold compared to the ragged edges of the yellow tome in your other hand. You thought it to be rather strange at first, but your father had explained that the comfort and ease of wielding a tome and a staff were just as important as how well a mage casted spells with said catalyst, or how a soldier gripped a sword.

"A compatibility issue", as he had dumbed it down to be.

You nodded to yourself, repeating the Nosferatu incantation within your mind. As you did so, a hand fell onto your shoulder. Glancing off to the side, your father flashed you a confident, easy-going smile.

"I'll be back in a jiffy," Henry assured, eagerly gazing off into the sandstorm with a bloodthirsty expression, "I'm sure our new and lively friends are just dying to see the spells I have for them. Ah, I haven't been this excited to kill anything in so long! Pchew pchew pchew, nya ha ha!"

Your father ecstatically rubbed his hands together and his spindly, soot-covered form warped with magic, quickly replaced with an amalgamation of crows that flew into the sandstorm. The echo of raucous caws and crazed laughter reverberated throughout the air, the sound of harsh winds taking over as they faded away.

Well, with him off to kill the Sage, you prepared yourself by flipping through the various pages of the Nosferatu tome. There were no defensive structures within the camp and it would take far too long to even construct such a thing, even if it were to be of the make-shift variety.

As such, you chose to briefly bolster your knowledge of the Nosferatu tome. Hopefully, using this tome would help to mitigate any wounds you gain.

Naga knows that you didn't need to waste more of that limited and precious Elixir on yourself and your glaring mistakes, although you couldn't argue how reassuring it was to know that you had something to fall back on at the end of a fight.

The wait for the invasion was anxious. You went through the Nosferatu and Thunder tomes plenty of times, to the point where even glancing at the books for more than a moment would fill your mind with the necessary incantation and knowledge needed for the spell.

The sound of your heartbeat and rampant thoughts that echoed throughout your mind were the only things you could focus on.

It wasn't long before that changed, though. The sound of footsteps broke you out of your musing, the distinct crunch of metal meeting sand filling your ears. You inclined your head upwards, gazing at the sandstorm with apprehension.

It was then that the night was filled with an array of red stars.

1d20 = 3
3 Risen from the invading horde manage to reach you before your father kills the Sage Risen.

At first, all that was visible were their blood-red eyes.

Glowing with the same animosity towards all things, they hungered for one thing that you feared the most. They floated through the sandstorm towards you, purple corpses moaning and groaning like the zombies from the movies you could barely remember from your previous life. Small rays of moonlight beamed over them as they walked closer and closer to your location, revealing more and more coming from within the sandstorm. All they wore were tattered and rotting clothes and rusted and dented armor. Some of them held nothing in their hands, others had bronze and hand axes within their grasp, while one of them was holding… their own tombstone?

Yep, it had its own stone tombstone hefted over its shoulder like a bastardized claymore.

The memory of the Bandit nearly killing you with the hand ax earlier came to the forefront of your mind. Your breathing quickened audibly, hands shaking with trepidation as you nearly dropped your Tomes onto the bed of sand below.

No. Not now. You refuse.

The thunder tome in your tense grip shone with golden light as the familiar sight of amber rings surrounded your form once more.

Not again. It would never happen again.

The first Risen entered your vision, rearing its head back and letting out that unfortunately all-too-familiar screech from its undead corpse. An unearthly roar, one that rended the very air itself apart with its decaying vocal cords and lungs. Despite your attempt to focus on casting the Thunder spell, your gaze was hard-locked onto the Risen, noticing how small flecks of black blood forcing their way out of its mouth.

Within mere moments, it was upon you, moving with speed that you didn't expect from a recently unearthed and undead corpse of its stature. Moonlight glinted off of the bronze ax it held, preparing to cleave you in twain.

Leonard's Health is fully Restored.

Thankfully, however, you were ready.

You rolled to the side, the Risen's ax embedding itself into the desert sand. It stopped moving and, realizing that the weapon was stuck, attempted and failed to pull out the ax with one hand while trying to claw away at you with no success on either roster.

Staring at the pawing hand with brief confusion, you let out a small laugh of relief. As much as you were surprised by its movements and the speed it had, this wasn't really the most intimidating of attacks to bear witness to. You would have thought it as cute… if it wasn't trying to kill you and every other human within its vicinity.

That was, you and your father.

With that thought in mind, two orbs swiftly slammed into the immobile corpse, the distinct scent of ozone filling your lungs as the mindless beast was struck with lightning.

"That was easier than I thought. Far too easy," you whispered, the Risen collapsing onto the ground like a sack of potatoes and dissolving into wisps of purple smoke.

The mass of groans proved your doubts to be correct, another Risen emerging from the sandstorm. It stared at you for a moment, as if it were a dog eyeing down a toy, before deciding to forgo the standard fare of attack in favor of attempting to body tackle you into the sand.

You pivoted on your left heel to face the assault head-on, rings pulsing with energy as more orbs fizzled into existence and struck the charging undead.

Magical smoke entered your lungs as the Risen's body dissipated, leaving nothing to indicate it had ever existed in the first place. A few raspy coughs left your lips you regained your bearings, waving a stray hand to fan the smoke away from your face.

Unfortunately, you were so focused on trying to clear away the smoke that you barely noticed the Risen lurking towards you, bronze ax menacingly raised into the air. With mindless abandon, it rushed forward and swung with frenzy.

Despite a majority of the swings missing, a glancing blow managed to prove that the weapon it held wasn't the main reason to prove that the Risen was so deadly. Pain coursed throughout your body as the butt of the ax struck your abdomen, the impact momentarily dazing you from casting your Thunder spell.

It prepared to swing once more, this time aiming to bisect your keeling form. But as the ax veered towards tour body, the monsters arm and the weapon it wielded froze in its tracks.

Massaging your stomach with one hand, your lips curled into a feral smile as you stared at the Risen. Dark flames spiraled from the dark of the night and firmly bound the monster in place, the Nosferatu tome in your other hand glowing with unseen power. Then, the pounding sensation from your head faded away, quickly replaced by a warm, fuzzy feeling that coursed throughout your body.

You didn't think that you would be able to cast the spell on time when that pounding sensation in your head began, but your training and last-minute preparation proved itself. A sigh of contentment and relief left your mouth, a stray gaze traveling to the unnervingly large horde of undead as the flames encapsulating the struggling Risen swiftly cremated it to ash that flew into the wind.

Moving to proper form, you prepared yourself to eliminate more Risen. Electric orbs sparked to life and the Nosferatu tome within your grasp radiated with dark energy, curls of dark purple flame roaring within the dark of the night.

However, it seemed to be that the one Risen you just killed would be the last to approach, the mass of undead vanishing without so much as an identifiable trace. The groaning and moaning that had previously occupied the area were now replaced with the howl of the desert winds.

After making sure, with absolute certainty, that all the Risen within the area were gone, you nearly collapsed onto the sand from exhaustion. Many long and arduous weeks of physical, mental, and magical training along with only a few hours of sleep left you absolutely drained.

With that thought in mind, you begrudgingly moved to find your father. It was almost daybreak and you wanted to convene with him about the rest of your training before you collapsed onto your bedroll in the tent. You deserved some time to rest with all that had happened in the past couple of hours.

Now, if only you could figure out which direction your father went.

You knew that he flew out into the sandstorm, but to where exactly was the question. A resigned sigh left your lips as you gazed off into the distance.

This was going to take a while.

As a result of successfully eliminating three Risen enemies, you have been rewarded:
+2 HP, +2 STR, +1 SKL, and +1 LCK.
+10 points to Magical Weapon Proficiency - Thunder. Raised from Novice 20/30 to Intermediate 0/60.
+5 points to Magical Weapon Proficiency - Nosferatu. Raised from Novice 0/30 to Novice 5/30.
Thunder Tome durability dropped from 38/40 to 35/40.
Nosferatu Tome durability dropped from 20/20 to 19/20.

You had to remind yourself to never, ever traverse a desert without a carriage or mount of some sort. Desert terrain be damned, you never wanted to deal with this much sand within your boots ever again.

Making sure they were clean of grime and other things on the outside was already a pain to deal with, but having to make sure that there isn't even a single grain of sand within your boots? That was hell in this ocean of sand.

Not to mention how long you had been walking through the desert. The sun peeked over the horizon and the raging sandstorm that had been going on throughout the night had all but disappeared.

Ugh, you could barely move your legs for any longer with how numb they were.

Where the hell was your father at?

Henry Battle Roll: 2d50 = 31 + 34 = 65 + 10 (Hex) + 10 (Anathema) + 32 (Tomebreaker) = 117
Sage Risen Battle Roll: 2d50 = 5 + 15 = 20 - 10 (Tomebreaker) = 10
Henry easily defeats the Risen Sage. However, someone unexpected visits.

The distinct noise of two people arguing hit your ears, and you ran towards it with fervor.

"I've told you many times that I won't accept your deal. I find it funny that you still think I'll change my answer, even though I won't," Henry said, annoyed.

Moving towards your father's voice, you spotted a hooded figure sporting a black robe lined with gold and purple trims.

Grimleal? Why was father talking with them?

"I see that you're still as adamant as ever regarding my - no, our deal," the person said, displeased as they crossed their arms, "Remember, Henry. You will always have a home within the Grimleal. All you need to do is ask and I can—"

"I've told you time and time again, you witch," your father interrupted, his tone unusually laced with cold and unadulterated rage, "I'm not accepting anything. Now leave. The longer you stay here, the more I regret not choosing to kill you here and now for what you did all those years ago."

The hooded figure scoffed and said, "Both you and I know that you won't do anything. You still—"

Your father casted a fire spell with his right hand, a deep frown etched upon his face as he stared at the robed figure with silent fury. The fireball struck the desert sand a few feet ahead of the Grimleal, dark scorch marks appearing in its wake.

"This is my final warning before I act on my threat like I usually do," he uttered, a scathing glare aimed at the Grimleal as his pearly white teeth bared themselves, "Leave."

"Still honest as ever, Henry. Fine," the figure indignantly huffed, staring at you for a brief moment with intrigue before warping away with dark energy.

Well. That just happened.

Your father sighed, his hands clenched into fists as he performed various... gestures that would certainly be effective in combat. "The gall of that woman, to think that I would even contemplate changing my answer. Even a distant reminder about her makes me want to just," your father growled. Then, he paused, took in a deep breath, and faced you with a faux smile you knew and loved. "Sorry that you had to see that, Leonard."

"It's fine, father. Truly," you assured, taking care to not fuel his apparent anger any further, "Anyways, our trip here is almost complete, right?"

"Yes. However, let's go and pack up our things first. Also, we'll visit the Tomb before we depart back for Ylisstol," he said. Then, he snapped his fingers with clarity as he patted himself down.

Fishing deep into his pocket, he pulled out a gold bar and tossed it in your direction. "Also, take this. Think of it as a little souvenir from this unexpected little endeavor."

You caught the gold bar with your hands and stared at it with confusion. There was no clear idea as to what you were going to do with such a thing, at least one that you couldn't think of at the moment, but perhaps you could save it for something later?

Also, wait a moment. Tomb?

It didn't take long before the two of you went back to the camp and gathered your bearings. It took even less time to reach the Tomb, as it was located right next to the dock where the ship that your father had commandeered from that poor sailor was located.

Entering the stone structure, you took a look around with child-like wonder. Various coffins and headstones were laid around the small underground area, many of them having various items such as flowers and other sentimental tems laid atop or beside them.

Your father stared down two coffins with what looks to be a downcast expression, his hands holding two silver flowers. His finger glowed with green light, and a wind spell lightly cleaned off all of the dust on the two coffins.

You made your way over to where your father was and force your sleep-deprived body to stand next to the coffin. With a yawn, you asked, "Sorry if this is a bit of an odd question, father, but why are we here? It's been a long day and I want to have some sleep before we head back for Ylisstol."

Wow, you didn't realize how whiny you got when you lacked sleep.

"To answer your question," he started, his ice-blue eyes laced with nostalgia, "I wanted you to meet my parents. Since we were in the area, I wanted you to at least meet them before we left." He gestured toward the coffins with a small smile.

Huh. Okay then. Honestly, you thought your father wanted to rob some graves or something similarly crazy–something typically normal for his attitude–not come here for a seemingly normal reason that you didn't expect at all.

Then, the weight of the situation slammed into you as your eyes widened with surprise and body froze stock still with exhausted stupor. A shriek threatened to leave your throat, but you hastily suppressed such a thing from happening before it escaped your lips. Your mind reeled in terror, the realization of what you said mere moments ago having been extremely disrespectful.

Taking your silence as an answer, he continued, "Mother, father. I know that I haven't visited in a while, and I'm sorry about that," Henry's voice wavered, eyes filled with mist as you witnessed him get more emotional than you've ever seen in your entire life. "But we were in the area and I wanted to introduce my son, Leonard, to both of you. Heh, where do I even begin... ah, right! He's super talented in magic, just like you both were. He'll definitely surpass me when he gets older, I just know it! I'm sure you both would be proud of how well he's done so far. After all, remember the time when you saw me cast my first spell? The both of you were very proud of me! Oh, and that one time when..."

As your father continued to talk to the two coffins, you stood still, frozen like a damn statue for the last couple of minutes or so. God, what was wrong with you? You needed to do something, anything.

You inclined your head towards the coffin and smile. "It's nice to meet you, grandpa and grandma," a somber expression replaced your smile, a hand falling onto the wooden surface of the coffin, "I'm sure both of you are proud of me and my father. We've both worked very hard, especially father. He's done so much to teach me Dark Magic in the past couple of weeks, and I wouldn't ask for anyone else to be my mentor and father."

Your father strided forward, his hands shaking as he placed a flower onto the coffins. The petals glowed a light gray as the flower vibrated with energy, the bud gaining a light green color.

He smiled, reminiscing on a memory from the past. "I remember that we had Ghost Orchids in our house when I was younger, so I got them for you. They cost a lot of gold and it was hard to find a merchant who was selling them at this time of the year, but I figured that these would be a nice gift for both of you. I know you would've appreciated them," he gripped the edge of the coffin tightly, "I-I know I do."

Tear trails trailed down your father's eyes, his hand balled into a fist as he leaned over the coffin. His normally slit-like eyes that were filled with delight were puffy and red, a testament to the emotional trainwreck that your father usually, well, wasn't. You moved to stand next to your father and solemnly stared down at the coffin, your vision obscured by light tears of your own.

Neither of you said anything for the rest of the time that the both of you stayed in the tomb, the silence and somber mood suffocating the atmosphere for proper conversation besides the goodbyes for when you left for your trip back to Ylisstol.

The day was young, as all mornings tended to be. Fatigue still lingered like a vice despite the vast amount of sleep you had, yet there was something keeping you from falling to slumber.

You had a perfect track record for keeping up with writing down your training plans, and some gods damned fatigue wouldn't be what had done you in that regard!

...Besides that point, of course, you had some major planning to do. Risen were now apparently a thing that existed, and by all accounts war was basically on the horizon. As such, actions needed to be taken. The actions that would be taken, however, were entirely dependent on what you wanted to focus on.

What were you going to do for the year?

Please structure your vote in a plan format, such as this example one:

[][Training Action] Train with Lucina. Maybe she can help improve your amateur sword skills? This action is locked in and will automatically be added into the future plans until you reach Sword Proficiency - Expert.

Note from the QM:
Alright, this took far longer than I thought it would. I'm not really satisfied with the update for whatever reason, but eh. All that matters is that I got it out before the new year started. :V

As always, if you happen to spot any errors/mistakes, be sure to point them out to me so I can fix them asap. Also, I hope you all have a happy holiday (or have a great winter break, if you don't celebrate any specific holiday(s))! If you want, you can think of this as an early Christmas present of sorts.

EDIT: 10/7/22, fixed the past/present tense issues, and adjusted some word structure that didn't exactly feel right for me to read through.

[X] Plan covering physical weakness
[X][Training Action] Train with Lucina. Maybe she can help improve your amateur sword skills? (+Support Points, Training Points w/ Swords, and SKL)
[X][Training Action] Go and see if you can't make new friends. Bonds are important, after all. (High chance of meeting ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, and/or ?)
[X][Training Action] Train with Yarne. Maybe he can help improve your measly physical strength and toughness?

Honestly I'm not ready to start another event so I say to put Severa on hold for atleast 1 turn. Also i hope to cover some of our physical squishyness and get some nice bonds (also maybe meet Nah but hey :p)

[x] Plan Running Joke and holy shit i forgot her mother just died
-[x][Training Action] Join Frederick's Fanatical Fitness Hour. It may be hellish training, but you can't deny that it's a great workout for you. (Guaranteed +1 STR and DEF when failing, +6 STR and DEF when Successful. Current DC = 60)
-[x][Training Action] Hang out with Severa. Maybe she could train with you? (Will trigger C-Rank Event)

Guys, i just remembered something: Severa's mother just died, we kinda need to talk to her now, we are her best friend. And i'm really curious about how far we can go with the FFFH, sure, it may not be the most optimal choice, but sue me, the QM feels nice enough to not force optimal paths on us.

It seems a bit strange that we got Strength rather than Magic but whatever. We should be careful before letting Severa know about the gold lol. (Edit: Maybe letting her spend our gold could help her feel better after she found out Cordelia died.)

Was the robed figure Fem Robin (- - - -), Mom (- - - - - -) or Aversa?

I want to learn Armsthrift. It's a disgustingly useful skill that becomes even more useful post apocalypse when finding/maintaining gear becomes even more important. We could potentially learn from Severa and try to teach her Anathema or eventually Vengeance.

[x] plan:getting the foundation right
[x][Training Action] Train in a branch of magic.
-[x][Training Action] Train your thunder magic. (+Training Points w/ Thunder Tomes, MAG)
--[x][Training Action] Train your thunder Armor by increasing its durability, magical power, and speed. (+Training Points w/Thunder Armor, SPD and MAG)
-[x][Training Action] Train your dark magic. (+Training Points w/ Dark Magic Tomes, MAG)
[x][Training Action] Train with a melee weapon.
-[x][Training Action] Train with a Sword. (+Training Points, STR, and SPD)
[x][Training Action] Join Frederick's Fanatical Fitness Hour. It may be hellish training, but you can't deny that it's a great workout for you. (Guaranteed +1 STR and DEF when failing, +6 STR and DEF when Successful. Current DC = 60)

p.s.:- @ItzNarcotic if we choose dark knight class will leo will lose the ability to cast dark magic like in the game

I'm okay with doing Severas event this turn if wr have to but just to get my prediction out there im like 76% sure shes gonba try to convince us to go look for her mom or she'll be going and we have to follow.

If we get dragged along then i will once more advocate for Dark magic since we are literally just better with it.

[x] Plan Where is my man Brady at
-[x][Training Action] Go and see if you can't make new friends. Bonds are important, after all. (High chance of meeting ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, and/or ?)

[x] Plan Running Joke and holy shit i forgot her mother just died
Child of War - Increases skill point gain and weapon proficiency gain by 1.5x in training sessions and in the battlefield.
All of the future children have this other than us. We need to train more.

Severa's traits are kind of overpowered. Adaptive mindset kinda makes me think she is robins kid.

[x] Plan Running Joke and holy shit i forgot her mother just died

The chance to make our sword actually hit worth a damn and make him far tankier physically feels worth it and Severa's event is necessary.

So I continue to wish to pursue a male friendship for Leonard, but I also really wish to complete Fitness Hour, Severa is a needed event. And Fitness Hour gets more likely every time we take it with fair rewards even on a fail so right now I prefer that.
