Blue Steel 2199: Arpeggio of Blue Steel/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Crossover

Here btw is the clip from the Magnificent Seven that Gunzou and company were watching. All fans of great westerns now rise...

Welcome to the show! We hope you like your stay. I can't answer as for the posting rules, although I feverently hope the powers that be say its okay.

I must envy your good fortune on the movie premeire. I've tried to explain to people that Yamato in Japan is as big as Star Wars or Star Trek, with the exception that no one is doubting the future of Yamato anymore.

The way merchandise is continuing to be released, you'd be inclined to think so. There's no shortage of new merchandise slated for this year with the new FigureArts Zero line, new Yuki and Yurisha figures in the Megahouse Yamato Girls line, the recent release of the Nazca-class kit from the movie, the recent and upcoming releases in the Cosmo Fleet Special line, and more in the Mecha Colle releases, as well as numerous new books (including the Complete Works which despite its hefty price tag (21,990 yen plus tax for the first two books, 12990 + tax for the second two books) and disappointing quality and layout issues is still worth getting if you can afford it) and, hopefully in the first half of 2015, the Ark of the Stars (I'm going by Tim Eldred's translation of the title rather than the awkward title ANN continues to use) Blu-Ray will be out.

I believe the future of Space Battleship Yamato is safe, in Japan at least, and that we have yet to see the last production in the 2199 universe. The future of the franchise outside Japan is another matter.

What are these?

And I really want Bandai to release 1/1000 models of the Lasceaux, Kukulkan, and Medalusa.

They released Darold first, they released Balgrey, Lambea, and Schderg in late November; now the Deusura II (the main ship with the core ship docked) is slated for a January release.

I'm hoping the Gatlantis 1/1000 kits are produced too. The 505-meter Medaluza will be a heck of a model at 1/1000, only exceeded by Domelaze and the 1/500 Yamato in size. I'm thinking the Lasceaux and Kukulkan are small enough to package as a set, like the various Gamilas sets that have been released to date.

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't release a 1/1000 model of the full Deusura II. Thing would have been impressive at 633m.

The Medalusa...I want to see how they model the Flame Strike Cannon's deployed and stored forms. In general I want to see how 2199 changes the Gatlantis battleship. 2199 has been really good at modernizing the designs, so I don't think we'll see the "tower full of guns" the original had.

I did notice the Lasceaux underwent a design change from 2D to 3D. It's best seen comparing the MechaColle box art with the Lasceaux's 3D model.

Never say never. They may eventually build the Deusura II main ship in 1/1000 form. Remember, the 1/1000 Domelaze went into production because of fan demand. Bandai had categorically said they would not build it because it would be "too big to fit in Japanese homes".... then proceeded to release the 1/500 Yamato which was barely smaller than the Domelaze would be.

My guess is that there just hasn't been the same demand for a Deusura main ship in that scale that there was for the Domelaze.

It was kinda glossed over in the series too. Here there actually is slightly more justification here since Earth knows that whomever originally sent the Fog to Earth are still out there with presumably less than friendly intent based upon the initial actions of the Fog. I think in the series, Serizawa simply went into conflict mode and assumed intent and chose to strike first despite Okita's judgement as Commander on scene.

There was never any justification other than it was Serizawa's rash and foolish decision. Does there need to be anything more than that? In all fairness to Serizawa, even if Murasame hadn't fired first, things wouldn't have turned out differently, aside from Melda being rightfully able to say Earth fired first. And while his decision was not a good one, it's a reasonable assumption to make that a fleet of warships entering your solar system aren't here for peaceful intentions. Regardless of who fired first, Earth would not have submitted to Gamilas rule. We're kinda weird in liking our freedom here ;).

Chapter 19
Blue Steel 2199: Part 19 Bitter Snowfall

It had been eleven days since the battle at Pluto, and the EDF destroyer Yukikaze had continued to limp through space. Conditions aboard the mangled destroyer were rough to put it mildly. Destroyers simply were not designed for comfort under the best of conditions. Burst speed, high agility, and the heaviest weapons possible is where destroyers excelled. Habitability was an after thought. Still, they were alive.

Unfortunately, those same spartan conditions also meant that supplies and equipment to make any but the lightest of repairs were also lacking, being dependent upon a larger ship's repair bays. And EDF Yukikaze was dying. Hits in the engineering section had knocked one reactor offline. The second was riding the ragged edge of its design. Thruster output was slowly dropping.Yukikaze had a small supply of nanomaterials onboard, stored in her 'quarters', but Captain Kodai had given priority to keeping the ship's environmental plant, com gear, and sensors online for the time being.

And so Kodai had made the decision to land on Enceladus. The ship would simply not likely hold up all the way back to the Mars perimeter and there was an abandoned mining facility on Enceladus that they could possibly scavenge parts and supplies from. It was a question if they could get the ship up again once they landed, but it might be possible and it would give his crew something to do while waiting rescue. In the end, the landing had been a little less precise and a bit harder than hoped for. With the automated distress beacon activated, Yukikaze's crew could concentrate on the dual tasks of surviving and making repairs. Ship's engineer Genda and two of his petty officers were dispatched to survey the mining facility to see what they could salvage.

Kodai waited impatiently, having co opted the navigator's station and wondering for the hundredth time why destroyer skippers didn't merit a chair on their own bridge. Suddenly the sensor operator frowned and adjusted his controls.

"Captain... I'm picking up a contact in orbit."

"One of ours?" He asked hopefully.

"No sir."The grim reply came. "It's Gamilas. Warbook calls it a strike cruiser class. Even money they know we're here sir."

"Probably but shut down the active sensors. Might as well not hold up a neon sign saying we're here."

"Yes sir."

"Communications?"

"Sir?"

"Use a tight signal and warn the survey team what's going on."

"Aye Captain. Shall I shut down the automated beacon?"

"No. They probably picked up our beacon and that's what led them here. We suddenly turn it off and they'll know for sure someone is down here. We need to lay low and maybe they'll decide a dead wreck isn't worth their time." In his gut, Kodai seriously doubted it, but it was the choice between a slim chance and no chance at all.

"Yuki!" He called. Yukikaze clambered up the ladder way

"Yes Kodai sama?"

Mamoru gently took hold of her by the shoulders. "If the Gamilons land, I want you to avoid exposing yourself. No matter what."

"But Kodai sama!"

"No 'buts'. That's a direct order."

Yuki looked at him sadly. She did not want to hide while her captain and crew were in danger, but he had given her an order.

"Please." He said. "I'm counting on you to keep safe. Besides, Lieutenant Genda's party is still out there. They'll need your help to stay alive if things go bad here. Understand?"

"Yes Mamo chan." Yuki said quietly.

Gamilas Cruiser EX-1138, in geosynchronous orbit above Enceladus.

Major Relgem Griydich stood calmly watching over the shoulder of the cruiser's senior sensor tech, radiating an air of arrogance and contempt which he had finely honed in his years of service in the Imperial Guard. He ignored the scowling look of the ship's Captain Krien. It's far too easy to goad that soldiers pride of his. Griydich thought with amusement. I'm sure he'll hang with as much soldierly nobility...

"Are we still getting the automated beacon?" Krien asked the tech.

"Yes sir. But only the beacon. She looks dead otherwise."

"If I were their Captain, I'd do the same thing. No... we'll land and investigate."

"You seem to find it easy to put yourself in the mind of a barbarian." Griydich commented drily.

"Barbarian? No. A soldier. I'm not surprised that you cannot relate." Krien replied with disdain. "Helmsman, take us down next to the Terron vessel." He turned to the communications tech. "Sound General Quarters. Weapons crews to readiness. I'm in no mood for a surprise because we got careless. We'll keep an active firing solution on them. I want them to know we'll shoot if they so much as twitch."

"A bit paranoid all over a wrecked Terron. Wouldn't you say?"

Arrogant bastard. Perhaps you would care to explain the Battle of Mars to me... Krien swore inside. "A wise officer prepares for what may happen, not what he wishes or expects to happen, major."

"Beginning descent Captain..."

"I'm not sure they'll appreciate the rescue, but better than leaving them on this barren iceball."

***

Below, Kodai waited tensely as the Gamilon ship landed. Her guns actively trained on them, this Gamilon wasn't going to give them an opening.

"Captain. We're being hailed." The communications tech announced.

"On speakers."

"Attention Terrons. This is Gamilas ship EX-1138. Abandon your craft and surrender. Any attempt at resistence will be met with deadly force."

"Well... that's it then. Remember what I said Yuki. I want you to shut down for at least a standard day and then find Lieutenant Genda. Understand?"

"Yes." She acknowledged and then produced a tiny device about the size of a fingernail. "Take this."

He took it in his fingers and examined it. "Nanomaterials? What is it? And... I thought nanomaterials lost their shape if separated from you?"

"It's a very simple machine with a mnemonic feature that allows it to maintain form. If you can plug it into a computer terminal. I know you'll be ready."

Kodai nodded. "Thank you Yuki." He smiled and saluted. "Stay safe. That's an order."

She returned the salute and then shut down, fading from sight.

Kodai sighed, slipping the chip in his waistband. Better not keep them waiting... "All hands abandon ship." Kodai led his men out into the frozen waste outside the ship.

Presently, the Gamilon craft lowered what looked to be a cargo ramp and two armored vehicles rolled down the ramp, followed by about twenty humanoid looking individuals in space suits. Finally, to Kodai's surprise, he looked into the face of his enemy.

A tall, slender and blue? man surveyed them with an admirably grave expression. "I am Captain Krien. May I ask who is in command here?"

"Commander Mamoru Kodai. EDF Yukikaze."

"Commander. I regret that your rescue will take the form of your surrender as prisoners of war, but it is the unavoidable product of our relative positions."

"Excuse me Captain." An unwelcome voice spoke up. "But the disposition of prisoners is a matter for the Imperial Guard, not the fleet."

Krien sighed. "Commander... allow me the... pleasure of introducing Major Griydich of the Imperial Guard." His entire tone spoke dark warning to Kodai.

"Major." Kodai saluted.

"Commander." Griydich nodded. "Um... Just for the record... Your surviving officers?"

"My executive officer... Lieutenant Ishizu." The lieutenant saluted.

"Thank you Commander... Lieutenant..." Griydich nodded to what Kodai now realized was some sort of automaton or android. Ishizu was shoved roughly up the cargo ramp before Krien could raise the slightest objection. Then three other troopers stepped past Kodai, weapons lowered. They fired...

"Have you gone mad Griydich!" Krien exclaimed in shock. "Those men were prisoners!"

"They were enemies of the Gamilon people Captain and not your concern." Griydich corrected. "Do remember that in the future. It would be unfortunate if that pride of yours proved to be your undoing Captain."

The Major turned to Kodai with a smile. "Shall we get on board Commander? We have a long trip ahead of us!"

Ah yes the Imperial Guard. I'm sure the universe wouldn't mind if a few, or all, of them suffered "unfortunate" accidents or "died honorably in the line of duty".

Well at least five Yukikaze crew are still alive plus Yuki herself. I have a feeling their stories are not over yet.

Was Kodai killed? It wasn't... very clear there. I know the Lieutenant was taken, probably for less than ethical interrogation methods, but his fate was... unclear. It says the guards stepped past him, I assume to avoid hitting him with their fire, but he's not mentioned boarding the ship.

Kodai was not killed. Last line was Griydich turning to Kodai and suggesting they board the ship.

Note... My reasoning for this scene: It seemed even on the bridge there would be far more likely candidates to survive the sort of wreck we saw in 2199. The ship was at least mostly under control to have ended up in the condition it did. So that really suggests there WERE more survivors than Kodai. Kodai and his XO look like the two men most likely to have been injured in a rough landing so Lt. Ishizu may well have died in the pure 2199 timeline, but there SHOULD have been more survivors.

That and the bleak, frozen conditions made me think of Malmedy. The script certainly goes out of its way to equate Gamilas with WW2 Germany, so there you have it...

The pride and honor of the regulars and the casual disregard displayed by the Guard.

All I can say is that the universe DOES have a giant karma machine and Kodai, Krien, and Griydich's numbers have been input into the system.

Interesting to see what the Karma machine gives as its answer.

By the way, the canon name for the Mamoru Kodai's first officer is Eiji Ishizu.

I had the impression that a number of non-officer crew were with Kodai when he surrendered, all of whom were killed.

Imperial Guardsman to Earther major: I'm sorry, but we can't accept your surrender.
Major: Why not?
Guardsman: We're short on ammunition.

It seemed to me that the Guardsman simply had everyone who survived long enough to surrender executed save Kodai.

Fucking asshole, the CO of the Gamilan ship should've had the Guardsman shot for that. Then again, we know that the Imperial Guard is full of rabid animals who need to die, and the only thing probably stopping that Gamilan from pulling his pistol and opening fire on the Guardsman is that the Imperial Guard are a bunch of rabid animals working directly for Desler.

Griydich figured the officers were worth interrogating, which is why the XO was not killed, but the common crewmen were not worth his effort.

Krien probably dreams of different ways to kill Griydich, but he's already on someone's shit list. (A fullblooded Gamilon assigned to serve under a ZaltzIan? Schulz is in overal command of all operations in Sol system and so is Krien's superior... )

Griydich has probably reminded Krien repeatedly where eveyone sits on the food chain. Of course he intentionally goads Krien to get sufficient cause to have him removed and executed anyway.

So our dear Captain cannot give in to the overwhelming urge to throw Griydich out an airlocck or better, leave him on Enceladus, but if heaven ever gives him a chance for Griydich to die because of what Krien DIDN'T do, Krien will die a happy man.

Hm... Do you think that Klein Fields are impervious to kinetic weaponry?
Because I got that impression from the anime and manga; that kinetics do no damage to it, and it's only through the application of Corrosion Torps and DEWs that a K Field can be overloaded.

I wouldn't say impervious, just that kinetic weapons are horribly inefficient at doing any damage.

A kinetic weapon will naturally disperse a lot of its energy away from the point of impact. Klein Fields clearly cause things to just bounce off of them and only absorb what doesn't bounce off.

The amount of energy actually transferred to the field itself will be vanishingly small compared to the total kinetic energy of the projectile.

Thus, why spatial weapons are best at defeating them because the objective is to break down and breach the dimensional structure of the Klein Bottle.

I have a feeling I know where you are going with this: "Couldn't Yuki simply have overpowered the Gamilon troops and protected the crew with her Klein field?"

I certainly asked myself that and the answer is yes... IF there wasn't a healthy Gamilon warship with energy batteries trained. At best; in Kodai's estimate, Yuki manages to wreck the Gamilon ship so they can't take off and everyone perishes.

At WORST, the Gamilons manage to overpower Yuki or otherwise coerce her into surrendering and then the Gamilons capture or kill everyone and start trying to see what makes Yuki tick.

Is there a possibility Kodai missed? Possibly... If Yuki and the whole crew surrendered, Yuki MIGHT be able to escape confinement and maybe they could forcibly take over the Gamilon ship. But even that would be a role of the dice. (Certainly no guarantee some Gamilon doesn't decide to take everyone down and self destruct the ship)

As it is, Three men are alive and safe from the Gamilons and Yuki is also safe. All things considered, it was the best outcome circumstances would allow.
