Blue Steel 2199: Arpeggio of Blue Steel/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Crossover

yeah, I definitely like how even the less competent folks like Goer are still competent enough to look like they deserve their positions. I still like how 2199 shows that there's some lines even the people we don't at all like (like teamkilling Goer) just will not cross.
really helped sell the Gamlias as the Decaying Empire.

and yeah, I expected to see fighters on Yamato- if only because USY basically runs on Space is an Ocean, so them not having any would be odd.

that too.

also had a thought.

What is Zwordar up to? he must be about, and the Yamato will be Big News.....

Not yet. Not until he finally breaks through in the Small Magellanic Cloud. With Gamilas defenses suddenly weakened, THEN he'll be trying to find out why. But if Domel should live, then it is possible that despite some brief success, Zwordar may find his forces just can't beat the master.

The Magna Flame Gun isn't perfect. While I expect the "deadly cold of Saturn's Ice Ring" nonsense to be tossed, terrain is still probably going to be an achilles heel. Domel will find this and exploit it to the max.

*edit* That is supposing he survives of course.

No joke, the more I look at Goer the more I find he's one of my favorite SBY 2199 characters. Sure he's the archetype of "incompetent boob" but even he recognizes what is a stupid order that wastes lives. His loyalty to Dessler is also something to be commended for, and he has some expressive faces. Sad that he had to go the way of the dodo. He could have been a great pawn for Dessler when he inevitably returns.

I wish they'd get on season 2 faster. They've already changed up how the Gatlanteans function (space!Middle Ages/barbarians), and I wonder what butterflies would having a, if not friendly, but amicable Gamilas Empire still kicking despite being weakened have when the Gatlanteans set their sights on Earth.

I really want the Ark of the Stars to be released in the West soon, apparently the climax battle is really good.

Personally, I think the incident that might drive Domel to surrender would be the fact that Dessler didn't overturn all the blame-shifting arrests Zoellick made after his attempted assassination of Dessler. Domel was one of those falsely arrested in this manner. Further, Dessler then sent Domel off with the promise that if he sunk Yamato or died trying, he'd ensure that Domel's wife wouldn't serve his sentence (issued while arrested on false charges, no less!).

What an ass.

True, but I prefer to cast my butterflies out where the crossover materials intersect.

Besides, I suspect that the supposed collaborator may have deliberately given false information that the Domel estate housed one or more sympathizers to be contacted in case of emergency. It seemed to me that Zoellick had set up Domel from the start.

One easy way to butterfly Domel's wife's arrest out is to not have that coup collaborator run into her house.

Except for the fact that she actually was part of the anti-government resistance movement.

Wife of Elk Domel, she grew up in the company of her father, a diplomatic officer, and is an accomplished woman whose wide range of knowledge includes Iscandarian etiquette. After giving shelter to an anti-government activist who had fled into the Domel estate's gardens while being pursued by the secret police, she was arrested on suspicion of being an anti-government conspirator and sent to Stalag Planet 17. After the prison is liberated by the officers of Ditz's faction, she takes part in the rebuilding of Garmillas with the admiral.

She gave shelter to a terrified man. Such things have occured many times in history without the benefactor being involved in any sort of movement or plot. (Witness the case of Dr. Samuel Mudd) I definitely saw her act against agents of the government AFTER her arrest, but there is clearly no evidence before then that she was guilty of anything other than compassion before that time.

Just as Admiral Deitz was a loyal officer until the state and its leader turned on him.

The situation would have been simpler for everyone if she had been sent to Stalag Planet 13 instead.

"Colonel Hogan... Colonel Glink wishes to see you immediately!" Notices well dressed lady in room, turns his head quickly. "I see nothing! I know nothing!"

I don't know. It's possible that she was really a member of a revolutionary group before her sentencing. I don't believe that canon ever clarifies that for us. She's certainly a person of considerable influence though, and seems to occupy a senior position in Gul Dietz's rebellion and eventual government.

I'd argue that at the point they arrested her, it was pretty clear that they didn't care about whether or not she actually was part of any rebel movement- see that scene where the IG is shipping off of a massive crowd of what look like random civilians (including children and infants!) and someone makes a comment to the effect of 'why are these people getting shipped to prison? they sure don't look like rebels!' to which the IG officer responds 'It doesn't matter, they're going anyway.'

also, I had a brainwave this morning: in 2199, Starsha and Earth have been talking even before the start of the series, right?
so who wants to bet that Earth knew what the Cosmo Reverser needed to work (mind imprint from someone who knew that it was supposed to look like) and that's why they sent Okita?

Okita had to know he didn't have much longer to live- hell, at the end there, it's clear he's only hanging on out of sheer willpower. so what if he knew that someone who had walked Earth before the Planet Bombs needed to die to power the Cosmo Reverser? after all, they had no way to know about the elder Kodai's rescue prior to reaching Iscandar, and his subsequent death and imprinting.

Except that Hijikata tried very hard to convince him to stay. If they were aware the price that had to be paid, then Hijikata would have realized that he could not do this mission. That this was Okita's legacy alone.

Besides, Starsha seems to be very into concealing pertinent details.

it's entirely possible that they (the higher-ups) kept the whole 'powered by a Heroic Sacrifice' bit as need-to-know, and Okita was the only one who needed to know.

or at least Hijikata didn't.
Okita didn't seem very surprised when told about how the Cosmo Reverser works, IIRC.

frankly, I would not be surprised if Okita knew far more about what was going on than most of the Yamato's crew- he was probably briefed in on a LOT of need-to-know stuff for the Yamato Plan.

plus, being who he is, I would also not be surprised if he knew things he technically isn't supposed to, since that happens all the damn time in any military worth mentioning. he just doesn't get called on it because he knows how to keep his mouth firmly shut.
See: knowing about how the UN fired first, and managing to keep that a secret for as long as he did- if he hadn't come out with it, no-one may have ever known for sure.

Chapter 15
Blue Steel 2199: Part 15.

'

"Yamato is almost ready to sail." Todo declared staring up at the huge battleship. "We only need the wave motion core. To that end, Operation M will commence in one month. Admiral Okita, you will command the main fleet component. To attract the enemy's attention, we'll feint a move on Pluto. The fleet only needs to hold long enough for our courier; code named Amaterasu, to reach the Mars perimeter line."

"Why not deploy the entire combined fleet?" Hijikata asked. In his head, he knew the answer.

"If we committed the combined forces, we could possibly win a straight up fight, but we would take prohibitive losses, leaving earth wide open for invasion, possibly before the new building program and the Fog Fleet could be ready to repel the assault. Yamato will commission at least two months before the Americans can get Arizona online. Borodino is still at least four months from commissioning, Andromeda, Bismarck, and Hood are even further from being ready.

"That means the mission is ours... along with the risk." Todo stated. "The unpleasant truth is that we are probably going to end up gutting what remains of Japan's space forces."

"The rest of our dispositions?" Okita asked.

"The Third Fleet, composed primarily of American forces, is rotating ships into the asteroid belt. It's the best terrain in case the enemy sends an attack force our way while First Fleet deploys out to Pluto. The Commonwealth Forces are acting as our Strategic Reserve, while the Russian and European Union Fleets will attempt to feint the enemy to Uranus. Their orders are to withdraw immediately if the enemy deploys at them."

"The retrieval team?"

"We've reinforced the original two man recovery team by sending Ars Nova on its test run out to Mars. Hyuga's new engine seems to be running well although they haven't opened it up yet. We're trying not to tip our hand before Yamato launches and hopefully until Kongo is ready."

Okita nodded. "Soon..."

Nice setup for that opening confrontation. The last part sounds promising, is Hyuga working on implementing FOG tech without nanomaterials? She did seem to enjoy the challenge of making things like her robot army on Iwo Jima out of completely "mundane" materials.

Oh neat, so they reconfigured Iona's hull (technically Takao's as well, since it's the Ars Nova version) from a seafaring patrol submarine into destroyer-class spacecraft?

That would be a bitch and a half to get up to space... if it weren't for the advanced technology and the space elevators.

Especially with the engines, What is needed is a single serviceable and effective design that doesn't rely on rare and exotic materials to get the job done.

Oh, this is going to be good. Do I see hints thst the Yamato might not be alone?
