I guess it depends on what we expect to do a lot of. Thus far, we've managed to get by with only several different bursts of calculated brutality and violence across a career lasting... wait, how long has it been since Artie was Embraced?

Either way, the Lupine will probably give the fighty-side of things a workout when they eventually decide they're done with being ignored.

On the Skill end, we could get a third point of Firearms or Brawl, or continue to increase stuff like Streetwise, Subterfuge, Investigation... either would be valuable. Obviously, all of this costs XP, which means we're going to have to put ourselves out on a limb to get it.

Less than a year. Artie spent a few months acting as Annabelle's bodyguard and general dogsbody before the Lasombra entered the Camarilla. After that, assume that a month passes between each story arc that's not an interlude - long enough for the Blood of any would-be regnants to fade from Artie's system. I'll have to go through the thread and create a rough timeline.

Wow, that's a fast journey thus far. Not that I have room to talk considering my own (nWod) Quests.

But yeah, it's pretty impressive, and I wouldn't be that surprised if it took a lot of people a while to catch up, in the sense of, like, the ones that don't pay much attention to Elysium expecting to focus back into the gossip in a year or three and figure out what happened with that Artie kid. :V

Word of God says that most of the older Kindred think that Artie's rise through ranks is due to a shadowy puppet master that is pulling at his strings and is trying to get an opening in the upper echelons of the Chicago Camerilla.

I'm torn between the "filling out the weak spots" kind of build stuff (getting Charisma up, getting some more basic skills, etc), and just leaning into who he is and what he can be even if it involves saving up a lot of XP for the higher purchases.

Like Artie is definitely someone who could use with a Resolve 3. I think it'd look good on them.

I know what you mean I have an entire plan cult dedicated to making and record plans that have been thought up by the thread.

Im leaning towards building on our strength rather than trying to 'patch every hole in the dam'. In short the plan focus' on improving our Charisma, Leadership, Allie's, and Firearms. With a secondary focus being improving our Resolve, Composure, Stamina and Disciplines.
The goal of the plan is to ready Artie for a potential leadership position either politically or militarily.

Honestly I like him with Charisma 1, Manipulation 3. Sure I know that getting Charisma to 2 would be preferential, but less interesting than going as far as we can with a low Charisma and a lot of heart.

I understand, sadly we're working against our clan babe when it comes to non-manipulation rolls. It's burned us a few times and once I think we got a Beastly success in one of those too.

Eh, it's not that bad. I mean, it sorta is, but the penalty is to first meetings or ones that rely on looks. But vampires know Artie's Nosferatu. The fact that he's pleasant, kind, and practically a Pretty Person by Nosferatu standards matters a lot more. And of course, the more we plug into the politics of the Camarilla, the fewer "first impressions" we will have to go through.

I suppose we could go after the Presence discipline a bit more seriously. It ads a nice bonus to all charisma checks and the initial Vs. check would be in our favor pretty early. Their is a lore sheet we can take to drop the cost from 7 to 5. And as a bonus because Rogue is a generous storyteller, he'll refund the 2 XP we spent to get it Presence_1 in the first place.

In a meta sense, the elders are absolutely correct in their assumptions. This is a Quest thread and not a User Fiction thread, after all.

Artie might be terrible at first impressions, but once he's gotten some Insight into your personality, he's fairly good at talking you into seeing things his way.

Honestly, the lack of red flags surrounding Artie makes vampiric strangers even more nervous. "Too good to be true," and all that.

Don't get me wrong. The generosity is just so I don't feel too bad about making Artie's unlife a living hell later on.

Maybe, though admittedly a lot of the Presence powers don't know what to do with Artie.

Like, what does this help a Consensualist?

Lingering Kiss: The vampire can gain bonuses to their Social pools against targets that they have Kissed.--Consensualist.

Some of the Presence 3 abilities are a little better, but, y'know. It seems like the biggest bonus is just more to Awe.

And this hypothetically seems like our kind of thing but is actually against everything Artie stands for (artistically):
  • Magnum Opus: When the vampire creates a work of art (ex: painting, sculpture), they can impart on to their work a portion of their Presence, making the audience succumb to its hypnotic allure or fear its dreadful visage. Amalgam: Auspex 3[2]

This Quest very much is not "Vampiric Artist" Quest. We have votes on whether to cute a deal with a 500 year old vampire to avoid trouble, not whether Artie's experiences with violence and bloodshed have him turning towards more red palates in an attempt to recontextualize the trauma of undeath within something familiar: not fire, not blood, but rich berries or blushing faces, or etc, etc.

As amusing as it would be for a vote.

But despite that, one does get the impression that their art is a sort of non-mechanical Third Touchstone, a thing that connects them to their old life. I don't think he wants to make art that's only for vampiric eyes, that's hidden away and not part of... well, the wholeness of things.

So special hypnotic artwork that makes people shit their pants when looking at it because it's so terrifyingly magical, irrespective of its value as a work in itsef is, like...

Not even remotely what Artie is going for, at least if I'm reading them right.

To be fair every Author has to be sadistic to some degree towards the characters in their stories.

Now that you brought it up it's weird there's only a single power for Presence_2. I'd rather take the power Daunt than Lingering Kiss due to the subtle and possibly self-destructive mind control the former can afflict.
Daunt would be kinda cool to have as it lets Artie be an example of the 'Beware the Nice Once' TVtrope.

Consider this, the use of such a power could be a blow to an artists ego. Because it brings up the question of is your art actually as good as people say it is or is that just the hypnosis? If it was a normal painting would it still be popular?

I could see using such a power to make traps in places normal people should not be. But using them as a means to gain wealth, fame or whatever else would be distasteful.

Exactly, it takes something that belongs to Artie and hands it over to the Beast, to the dark strange beautiful things that lurk in there within them, that are part of his new abilities.

If part of Golconda is finding a balance with Beast, I propose the first bonding activity be introducing it to the Art of Creative Destruction. Artie puts himself somewhere safe and just lets the Beast go hog wild on some destructible material.
Another bonding exercise involves buying some cattle from the local sale barn and letting the beast be a one man butcher shop. But that be…quite the mess to clean up.

Note: Curse, my large fingers for these misspells!

[X] [EMOTION] Regret. I'm already getting the sense that I've signed up to listen to some "guru" give his sales pitch.

[X] [SOCIALIZE] I should see what Kathy Glens is like when she's not drilling me or leading Baby Chorus.
-[X] What does she think of this whole Golconda business?
Part of you holds out hope that one night, you'll be able to walk among mortals without wanting to tear into passersby like they were juice pouches on a hot summer's day. The world has gotten stranger for you since your Embrace and initiation into Chicago's secret vampire society. Perhaps it'd even be kind enough to offer a way for you to control the urges of your Beast.

However, you find yourself seriously doubting that Zachary Forge is the one with the answers to "Golconda." Still, it's just one evening out of what you hope to be an endless number. You can sit through a safety briefing necessitated by the mishap of some dumbass boot straight out of basic. You can handle listening to some Kindred "guru" trying to sell you his book on achieving enlightenment.

"Evening, Kathy," you say as you approach Baby Chorus's lead guitar. She's scrutinizing one of Forge's taxidermied trophies: a wildebeest's head stuffed and mounted on the wall between the tall bookshelves.

"Evening, Artie," Kathy replies, barely glancing your way in acknowledgment before returning to her staredown with the wildebeest's dead eyes. "Got another question you'd like to ask?"

"Am I that obvious?" You ask rhetorically. In response, Kathy turns her head toward you, a dark eyebrow raised. "Alright, alright, you got me. I was just surprised to see you here tonight, that's all. Are you here to find the answers you mentioned before?"

"I am, but the more I see, the less I'm starting to think that Zachary Forge has the ones I need." There is a human frustration in Kathy's voice as she stares down at her trembling fist. In her voice, you hear the low notes of a person who's spent far too long on a project but is far too deep to even consider backing out. "Everywhere I look, no matter who I ask, I keep running into dead end after dead end."

"What's got you so eager to attain enlightenment?" You ask. Kathy doesn't reply - at least not verbally. Instead, her fingers spay out and start tapping her thigh as if desperate to strum a guitar. Her gaze flickers up to meet your own only briefly, but it's long enough for you to discern the sorrow and regret in her dark eyes.

If you recall correctly, the state of Golconda allows Kindred control over their Beasts. If you had to guess, Kathy must have done something in the throes of a frenzy. A horrible deed that weighs on her enough that she'll go through hell to attain enlightenment and end even the slightest possibility of making that mistake again. "Sensitive subject, huh? Alright, I won't pry."

"U-Um, excuse me?"

You and Kathy turn to see Emma poking her head through the library door. "Mr. Forge is ready to see you now."

You have earned one XP for discerning why Kathy Glens is seeking Golconda.

Zachary Forge appears to be a man in his mid-fifties, with graying hair and a bushy mustache thick enough to be the envy of every walrus in the Arctic Circle. Dressed in a tan linen suit, all Forge needs to complete the image of the 19th-century British colonialist is a monocle and a pith helmet. "I must say it's a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, Mr. Delacruz."

"Likewise, Mr. Forge," you reply, more out of politeness than anything. You can't put your finger on it, but something about your host seems off. There's no big flashing warning sign floating above Forge's head, but all the little off-putting details make you uneasy. His smile shows off so many teeth that you're worried his lips will split in half, and you doubt his eyes fully perceive his guests as he greets them in his study.

Once you and the other guests are seated, Forge moves in front of his carved wooden desk, clasping his hands together eagerly. Again, Forge's grin is unnervingly wide, almost manic. You half-expect a bolt of lightning to flash in the night sky beyond the large window behind Forge. However, there isn't even a murmur of thunder or a wisp of dark clouds. "Welcome, one and all. I am honored to be your host this evening. Though there are fewer of you in attendance than I had hoped, I promise you that your open-mindedness will be rewarded."

Forge moves to the reversible chalkboard next to his desk - the sort of thing one might find in an old-fashioned classroom. "To ensure we share the same basic understanding of tonight's topic, I shall give a brief history of Golconda. I do not mean to insult your intelligence. I only seek to eliminate ignorance."

As he speaks, Forge picks up a piece of chalk and begins to record keywords and phrases on the board in a nigh-unintelligible script. He doesn't write as much as drag the chalk across the black surface. You've seen YouTube videos of primates using paintbrushes with greater fine control than Forge. "The term 'Golconda' originally referred to an ancient city in India famed for its diamonds. Eventually, the word became a synonym for wealth, usually in the material sense. However, it is spiritual wealth our cousins in India are referring to when they use 'Golconda' as the name of the state of enlightenment beyond the natural state of being Kindred.

"According to tradition, the Antediluvian Saulot achieved Golconda after studying under Hindu gurus. He would then pass their teachings onto his progeny, the Salubri." At this point, Forge gazes intently at Erichtho, watching for her reaction. However, her only response is a silent lift of her chin. Well? Get on with it.

Forge then turns his attention back to the rest of his audience. "However, after the founder of Clan Tremere diablerized Saulot during the Dark Ages, the Usurpers drove the Salubri to extinction, and much of the knowledge surrounding Golconda and how to achieve it was lost."

At this point, Kathy raises her hand as if you were all back in college. However, Forge takes it in stride. "Yes, Ms. Glens?"

"Why didn't the other clans move to stop the Usurpers from, you know, usurping? Were the skeletons the Salubri had in their closet bad enough that the other established bloodlines allowed a new breed of vampire to take their spot?"

Instead of Forge, it is Erichtho who answers. "According to my clan, the Salubri were diablerists who consorted with demons for power. However, I have done some research of my own. While the Salubri may have devoured souls behind closed doors, the other clans were more concerned with learning our founder's sorcery than bringing diablerists to justice. Before becoming Kindred, our founder was a mortal mage. Allowing Tremere's devouring of Saulot to go unpunished was seen as an acceptable price for access to magical power more immediately applicable in the Jyhad than a long and treacherous path to enlightenment."

"So the Tremere had to destroy the Salubri, just like how these nights, members of Clan Lasombra have to sacrifice an older lick if they want inside the Chicago Camarilla?" You ask.

Erichtho hums as she considers your words for a moment before nodding. "Yes. That's actually a rather good comparison. However, by the time of the Convention of Thorns, we Warlocks had established as respected members of Kindred society, if not trusted. It may take centuries for the Magisters to achieve the same status within the Ivory Tower."

There is silence in Forge's study for a moment as you all contemplate what you've just heard. Your host strokes his mustache as Kathy stares down at her hands. Bobby writes feverishly in the notebook he brought with him while you and Erichtho gauge the others' reactions. As the silence lengthens, you think that now is the time to seek clarification regarding Golconda or other matters concerning the supernatural.

[] [QUESTION] I'll write a question about Golconda or occult lore and see if I can get an answer.
[] [QUESTION] I've learned plenty already. I have no further questions to ask.

You have earned one XP for learning about the history of Golconda.

[X] [QUESTION] What does Enlightenment entail, is it just reaching a certain mental state or is it something more?
I don't think Artie would believe that Golconda could do things like let him walk in the sun or become human again, but having a better relationship with the Beast and control over Hunger is something I'd think he would think possible.

[] What are demons? Do they imply the existence of Hell?
[] If the Salubri were soul eaters and Golconda seekers, does that mean Golconda means you need to eat souls?
[] If souls are real, then is there an afterlife besides being a ghost?
[] If Saulot learned Golconda from Hindu gurus, why hasn't it been rediscovered just by studying the teachings of those gurus? Hinduism's still around after all.

[X] [QUESTION] What does Enlightenment entail, is it just reaching a certain mental state or is it something more?

Agreed: it seems logical that even if it doesn't do miracles, learning how to meditate and concentrate* has to help.

*Probably represented as an in-universe explanation for Composure increases

@Andres
Here you go I went a head and posted it in the Question format. The number of votes for questions don't really matter we're just shotgunning* writing material in Rogue's general vicinity for later.

[X] [QUESTION] If Golconda can influence the relationship between the Beast we inherited from Embrace and the Humanity we are Born with. Wouldn't that imply it's possible for other schools of thought to have a similar effect?

[X] [QUESTION] What practices of Golconda make it such a treacherous and unpopular path to walk?

[X] [QUESTION] If Golconda entails finding a balance between Beast and Humanity does that mean there's a way to communicate with our Beast more directly?

<In Artie's Head>
*Pictures a wild wolf than it transitions to Courage*
A visual image of becoming familiar with something you once feared and that something transitioning into a parallel of what is familiar to you.

[X] [QUESTION] What is the Camerilla's official stance on the Salubri currently?
I'd be highly suspect of a Bloodline being wiped out in only a few centuries.
From a purely logical point of view, Kindred are immortal and have no reproduction limitations beyond how much blood they have in their body at any given time. Thus it's entirely possible for the bloodline to make a resurgence if a single member survived the culling. If wiping out a clan was easy, well not to think poorly of other clans, but there probably would be 13 of them. For example a desperate kindred could have hidden quite well in the depths of the ocean if pushed adequately by circumstances.

[X] [QUESTION] What made the Salubri stand out from the other clans?
Every clan has a gimmick or fulfill a niche in kindred society. I wonder what the Salubri's were.

[X] [QUESTION] Wait…does that technically make Tremere, the Founder, an Antediluvian? Or does that just mean the Tremere are a Bloodline of the Salubri, in the same way the Hecate all shared the same Antediluvian?
This is a rather philosophical question to ask but might get an interesting perspective both from the current audience and Erichtho.

*Fun fact: I once took shotgun pellets to the face due to them ricocheting off a target.

I do actually worry that being the one to ask all these questions rather than a small, limited number of them might put us, like, in an awkward position.
Don't worry, this is very in character.
So much so, that Kindred we haven't met before, like Kelly, know we have a habit of doing this. If it makes you feel better this is how Artie manifests his clan compulsion: Cryptophilia. He can't help put asks a bunch of questions when he's introduce to a new subject.

Yep Artie is a Nos sure he's a very atypical one but a Nos he remains.

For example, a desperate Kindred could have hidden quite well in the ocean depths if pushed adequately by circumstances.
In a pinch, maybe, but playing vampire Aquaman is not a viable long-term solution, even if Kindred don't need oxygen. Animal blood is nowhere near as nourishing (or tasty) as a human's, and the Ventrue can't be "vegan" at all. Then there's the risk of floating to the ocean's surface in the middle of the day. Not to mention the other supernatural threats that call the ocean home.
