Interlude 1.09
[X] [SHERIFF] Yes, I would accept the role of Sheriff if the Prince offered.
-[X] Being Sheriff is far from easy, but I'm not one to shy away from responsibility.
The thought of succeeding Damien as Sheriff of Chicago has been on your mind for some time now, ever since the Prince appointed you to be Hound. Rising up to the challenge when given more responsibility than anticipated has been a recurring theme throughout your mortal life and your existence as one of the Damned. In the Army, when the other specialists in the E-4 Mafia refused to raise their hand, you volunteered to do what was necessary. It's why you were made corporal.

While you're not eager to replace your boss anytime soon, you've resolved to be ready for the responsibility should Prince Jackson tap you for the role. Becoming Sheriff would grant you more power to reform the Camarilla. Plus, taking over for Damien would prevent a soup sandwich of a lick from becoming the chief enforcer of the Traditions in Chicago. While you respect Alexa as a fellow Hound, the thought of them as Sheriff of Chicago makes you want to join the elders being Beckoned toward the Middle East.

"That's not up for me to decide," you say to Kathy. "But if Prince Jackson wants me to succeed Damien, I'm not going to say no."

Kathy's mouth slowly broadens into a smile so wide, you're afraid her face will tear in two like a piece of paper. "That's great! I'm looking for the night when I call you Sheriff Artie."

Kathy's expression then softens. She fixes you with a pleading look in her dark eyes. "In the meantime, look out for Damien, won't you? I can't always be there for him."

You nod as you finish the last of your blood. "Of course."

Melee 1 (You know how to stick them with the pointy end.)

Debt to Kathy Glens (Debt 1)

In exchange for teaching you how to wield melee weapons, you owe Kathy Glens, lead guitarist of Baby Chorus, a minor boon.

Kathy Glens
They seem trustworthy.
The lead guitarist of Baby Chorus considers the Sheriff of Chicago to be like a younger brother. Since she can't always be there to look out for Damien, she's relying on you to do so in her stead.

According to Prince Jackson, Wauneka's official domain consists of "any human foolish enough to sleep under a tent in Chicago." What was a flippant declaration from the Prince about the city's homeless population is a statement taken quite seriously by Wauneka. Your fellow Nosferatu considers all of Chicago's tent cities to be his territory and hunting ground. However, the homeless camp on Lake Shore Drive in Uptown is closest to his heart, as it was his home for a long time following his return from Vietnam.

You and Wauneka sit back against the concrete underpass, watching the local unhoused settle in for the night. Many - too many - wear tattered camouflage from their time in the various branches of the American military. Your heart may not beat anymore, but it can still break. Fortunately, the droplets of vitae welling up in the corners of your eyes cease at the sound of Wauneka's voice. "I heard from one of my people that you paid Naomi Stewart a little visit at her little school."

You nod. There's no point denying it. Still, you keep your voice calm and casual. No need to pique the interest of any of the nearby homeless. "You heard right. However, it was only a personal visit - not any of the elite club's business. Naomi is probably the Blue Blood highest on the pecking order that doesn't share Blood with the Old Prince. That, combined with that rumor of her training a cabal of thin-blooded assassins, meant I had to meet her for myself."

"And?"

"While I don't think she's planning to overthrow the Prince, she is teaching the Caitiff and thin-blooded about the Traditions. An alternative to Critias' Eternal Academy, she calls it."

Wauneka snorts. "Great. Another potential breach of the Masquerade to keep an eye on. Is there any truth to the rumors that she might run for Capone's old spot on the Council?"

"She gave me the old politician's non-answer, but I think she's prepared to take on Ballard for the role."

Wauneka grunts. "Well, better her than that fat fuck Ballard, I say. I have no idea why Gabriella still hangs out with him. Even the Seneschal, his own childe, can't stand him."

Wauneka slumps forward, folding his arms atop his knees and resting his chin on them. "Look at this shit, Artie. People like us are fighting and dying out in the jungles and deserts while fat cats like Horatio Ballard get to stay home and sit atop an ever-growing pile of cash. We could do more with that money in a week than the elites ever could."

"I can't say I disagree with that sentiment," you reply with a sigh. "I mean, just look at all the vets here. Who knows how many times they got screwed over by the VA? Who knows how much they still dream of the battlefields they left behind? They deserve better than this."

If it weren't for Annabelle promoting your work, there was a good chance you'd end up yet another homeless vet on the mean streets of Chicago. However, you managed to strike it rich in the local art scene while so many others struggle to get by. While you've donated much of your profits to veterans' charities like the one that employs Valerie, there must be more you can do.

Then it hits you. While many vampires have hired mortal bodyguards to safeguard them, many more are bereft of such protection. A private security company catering to Chicago's Kindred community could win you allies among the living and mawali among the undead. Contracts to secure havens and domains could prove quite lucrative. However, even if other Kindred won't trust your people to secure their resting places, there's still money to be made in providing armed backup. Going into private security could also be a great way to meet valuable contacts and win more influence you can use to help veterans.

You've already recruited willing vessels from among the city's former military. If you were to offer fair pay and a chance to take up arms again, you bet that you could convince people to come and work for you. Of course, starting such a venture is rarely as easy as it sounds, but for now, at least, you only need to decide on a name.

[] [NAME] Crossguard Security
[] [NAME] Darkblood PMC
[] [NAME] Red Fang Services
[] [NAME] Vitae Protection
[] [NAME] Let me write a name for my new private security business.

[X] [NAME] Crossguard Security
I really love how effected Artie was by his fellow vets being homeless, it really shows his humanity. Also this feels like the most benevolent and non vampiric name.

[X] [NAME] Crossguard Security
This feels like the most benevolent and non-vampiric name.
Honestly, I'm not great at naming things, so I'm pretty proud of myself for coming up with an option that plays off the English cognate of Artie's surname. Also, it took me far too long to realize we had named our artist protagonist Artie.

I really love how affected Artie was by his fellow vets being homeless. It really shows his humanity.
Thank you! I was worried that Artie's reaction might come across as sappy, so I'm glad you liked it. As awful as the supernatural denizens of the World of Darkness can be, true horror lies in the banal evils that exist in the real world.

This was part of a future mega plan I was going to offer to the thread. I was inspired by One Piece's very own Buggy the Clown and thought that it be cool if Artie employed Vets as bodyguards for Kine and Kindred services. Buggy himself employed numerous pirates as lawful bounty hunters and bodyguards.

[] Plan: Invictus—Arturo's Delivery(21 XP)
-[] Allies 3: I can call upon my old comrades living in Chicago once per story.
--[] Allies 4: Some even have experience serving in special operations units like the Rangers and SEALs. (3 XP)
--[]They appear half the time when I call. (3 XP)
--[] Old Comrades (Allies 3): They appear within one to ten hours. (3 XP)
-[] Leadership 4: Some Kindred are willing to follow me into Final Death. (12 XP)

[X] [NAME] Crossguard Security
I was going to suggest the name in the plan but I like this name too. It also reminds me of Crossguild.

Also, it took me far too long to realize we had named our artist protagonist Artie.
Don't feel to bad, that went over my head too and I write his name a lot. One good thing about this realization is you can sneak in Artie the Artist jokes. Annabelle would be my first guess to do it, though Gengis would be a close second.

Thank you! I was worried that Artie's reaction might come across as sappy, so I'm glad you liked it.
Being sappy doesn't always have a negative connotation. I understand the feeling of helping as much as you can but feeling like it's not enough. Sometimes it won't be, but you will rarely ever be in a situation where not helping would have made things better.

Quote of the day:
"I will never regret the things i did wrong. I will only regret the good things i did for the wrong people."

[] Plan: Invictus—Arturo's Delivery (21 XP) (36 XP)
Leadership is a Skill, not a Background, so raising it to four dots would cost a total of 27 XP. While Persuasion measures Artie's ability to convince people in a one-on-one conversation, Leadership measures his ability to control a crowd or command a military unit. For example, a lieutenant fresh out of OCS might be better-spoken than the sergeant with over a decade of experience, but we all know who the privates will look to when the bullets start flying.

[X] [NAME] Crossguard Security

I had to refresh my knowledge of One Piece to understand your post. If Artie continues to go the way of Buggy the (Star) Clown, they'll wind up Justicar of Clan Nosferatu. The thought is both amusing and terrifying.

The Toreador in Annabelle's entourage picked up on the coincidence almost immediately, but Artie's heard all the obvious jokes by now.

My mind was running a mile a minute trying to figure out how my system made an error. But than I realized the issue was miscommunication on my part.
[] Plan: Invictus—Arturo's Delivery(21 XP)
This plan is step 3, in the overall mega-plan. Step 1, has the skill increases for Leadership 2 and Leadership 3. So this plan wouldn't be valid without editing or the first step being taken first. I should have added a (Part 3) to its name to make that clear, that's on me.

The thought is both amusing and terrifying.
Agreed, the dichotomy of being perceived as one of the strongest Nosferatu in the Camerilla but in actuality technically being weaker than the position implies, is very amusing.

That's why I drew the comparison between Buggy and Artie as both have somehow reach high ranking positions outside the norms of the setting's power scale.

Dang no 'His name's actually Barkeep jokes'. Hmm…I wonder if Artie's ever known a Sargeant Greg 'Sarge' Sargent?

Here are the first few steps to the mega-plan: Invictus I was talking about earlier. The intention is to begin developing skills and attributes related to Artie's stated goal; Internal Reformist, Si Vis Pacem, and American Legion. They are of course subject to change and suggestions.

Do we really want to owe all of these big favours?
Maybe, maybe not. It will just depend on the situation and how the thread feels about it. We don't have to get everything in one go I just want to most highlight some skills and progression paths we could take.

As for the debts, it's been stated in story, "How much debt you own doesn't mean as much as your ability to repay." On one hand it's an option we should use but on the other we should be mindful who we owe. I could talk myself into owing Olaf no matter how much XP it would save.

Sure, and when it comes to minor debts I'd agree but major debts carry serious implications.
True and you can absolutely vote that too. I just laid a ground work that can be jumped off in the future.
Speaking of minor debts, in the last vote it was implied you could owe multiple debts of the same level to the same person. Not sure though if you could go so far as to say, "I'll owe person X two minor debts in exchange for a -6 to this XP cost." At that point it might turn into a major debt, or such a thing has to be broken up over several skills/attribute purchases.

Dang no 'His name's actually Barkeep jokes'. Hmm…I wonder if Artie's ever known a Sargeant Greg 'Sarge' Sargent?
No.

Nice to see you in the thread again, @No7sHere.

Do we really want to owe all of these big favours?
Maybe, maybe not. It will just depend on the situation and how the thread feels about it...

As for the debts, it's been stated in-story, "How much debt you own doesn't mean as much as your ability to repay." On one hand, it's an option we should use, but on the other, we should be mindful of who we owe. I couldn't talk myself into owing Olaf no matter how much XP it would save.
Sure, and when it comes to minor debts, I'd agree, but major debts carry serious implications.
For the sake of clarity, allow me to recap how boons work, as per pages 314 and 315 of the V5 core rulebook.

Minor boons (one Background dot - 3 XP) require you to go out of your way to pay off. Either they have a small but lasting cost, or involve some risk. Kindred might ask a minor boon in exchange for:
  • Voting in their favor during the next session of the Primogen Council.
  • Offing an unimportant mortal.
  • Access to their curated collection of occult lore.
  • Letting you inside their fortified haven before the hunters find you.
Major boons (two Background dots - 6 XP) can alter the flow of Kindred affairs in a domain, and they always involve real risk or real expense. For the purposes of this Quest, the repayment of a major boon will likely be a story arc unto itself. Kindred would ask for a major boon in exchange for:
  • Political offices.
  • Access to rich hunting grounds.
  • Instruction in a proprietary Discipline like Blood Sorcery.
  • Leveraging significant resources toward your agenda.
  • Reversing your expected vote.
Life boons (four Background dots - 12 XP) are the rarest and most valuable kind of favor, and perhaps ironically, the type most often promised at a moment's notice - when the next moment might mean Final Death. Earning life boons typically involve:
  • Assassinating a powerful elder.
  • Coercing a desperate lick.
  • Protecting another vampire's Touchstone(s).
  • Helping the guilty escape princely justice.
  • Keeping some hideous secret.
Aside from providing one-off discounts when spending XP, you can also call in favors during Social tests. Discharging a minor boon can result in an automatic win on a Social test against your debtors, while major boons can risk the equivalent of two or three dots' worth of Backgrounds.

Speaking of minor debts, in the last vote it was implied you could owe multiple debts of the same level to the same person. Not sure though if you could go so far as to say, "I'll owe person X two minor debts in exchange for a -6 to this XP cost." At that point, it might turn into a major debt, or such a thing has to be broken up over several skills/attribute purchases.
Allowing you to owe multiple minor boons, as opposed to one big favor, is something I considered presenting as an option, but I wasn't sure how granular you guys wanted the experience of prestation to be. On the flip side, you can consolidate smaller debts into greater boons, as per the additional rules presented on page 259 of Chicago by Night. However, breaking a boon down into smaller, more manageable favors will require you to convince your creditor to renegotiate terms. In both cases, you should inform Bret Stryker of the change.

Interlude 1.10
[X] [NAME] Crossguard Security
After parting ways with Wauneka, you return to your haven and immediately get to work. While you know plenty of former grunts, your list of acquaintances with experience running a business is far shorter. Still, you put out feelers in search of executives possessing both military backgrounds and distinguished careers in the private sector. As luck would have it, your inquiries put you in contact with another veteran with the same idea.

Your first in-person meeting with your potential business partner is over Sunday dinner at an Italian restaurant in the Loop. It doesn't take you long to spot her - she's the only patron wearing National Guard fatigues. As the mortal maitre d' brings you to her table, she looks up to see your face, marred by the curse of Clan Nosferatu. However, the only reaction you garner is a tightening of the mouth. Not bad.

"Artie Delacruz," you say as you extend a hand made warm and lifelike by the Blush of Life. "It's a pleasure to meet you face to face, Major Chowdhury."

"Just Eleanor, please, and likewise," the woman replies as she shakes your hand. Once you've sat across from Eleanor, a waiter comes by to take your orders."I'll have the vegetable lasagna."

"...The stracciatella, please," you say after a moment's consideration. While the Blush of Life allows you to consume food and drink without vomiting, you'll have to go to the bathroom to throw it back up sooner or later. With that in mind, you order the soup, so you won't have to worry about throwing up chunks later. Once the waiter leaves, you turn your attention back to Eleanor. "So, you're a vice president at Sunburst Computers when not in uniform, right?"

"That's right. I've spent most of my career behind a desk, but my IT experience will be invaluable if and when we expand into the cybersecurity market." Eleanor takes a moment to push her glasses back up the bridge of her nose before fixing you with an expectant stare. You can't help but feel like an awkward teenager forced to stand before answering their teacher's question. "I've been considering starting my own security company for some time now, but why have you decided to go into private security?"

"I've made more money from my art than I know what to do with, but I'd like to put at least some of it to work helping vets find gainful employment after being discharged. However, handling credit card payments for custom portraits and graphic design work is nothing compared to running a corporation. That's why I approached you to become CEO and run the day-to-day operations."

Eleanor nods. "I see. Well then, let's clarify our expectations for each other, shall we?"

And so you begin negotiating with Major Eleanor Chowdhury. With the upper echelons of Sunburst Computers filled to the brim, Eleanor is eager for a promotion that will give her more freedom to make calls as she sees fit. Given your inexperience with the business world, you're happy to leave most of the decision-making to her. In turn, Eleanor is willing to cede the majority of Crossguard Security's shares to you as the guy providing most of the startup capital.

By the end of dinnertime, you and Eleanor have hammered out an agreement, and she promises to do the legwork in getting the corporation up and running. A few weeks later, Crossguard Security's office is open for business. While the company has yet to be profitable, much less be in a position to provide a return on your investment, you're happy to content yourself with armed bodyguards to call upon should you anticipate violence.

However, not all can go well for you. From what you and your fellow Nosferatu have gathered, it seems Night's Cross had been talking to some of your new employees, hoping to recruit them to their crusade against vampires. While it doesn't seem that they've traced the corporation poaching their prospects back to you or the rest of Kindred society, you can't help but wonder if you should launch a preemptive strike against the hunters. For now, at least, you can attend to other matters without fear of an armed militia staking you during day-sleep.

Chicago Veterans Crossguard Security Corporation (Allies 3, Herd 1)
What was once an ad-hoc group of willing vessels has become an organized private security force led by Eleanor Chowdhury. Aside from feeding you their blood, your new employees will take up arms on your behalf. However, the need to service customers prevents them from assisting you more than once per story arc and never on short notice.

Hunted by Night's Cross (Enemies 1)
You've become quite the thorn in the side of this local group of hunters. Granted, they lack the reach or resources of government organizations like FIRSTLIGHT. However, they are far more able to give you personalized attention.

Eleanor Chowdhury (Potential Retainers 3)
After serving in the US Army as a staff officer, Eleanor Chowdhury left an executive role at Sunburst Computers to work for you as CEO of Crossguard Security. While she's never fired a shot in anger, her extensive experience in the private sector has given her negotiation and computer skills that you could leverage if you let her in your vampiric secret.

"Congratulations on the success of your new enterprise," Sierra says. Tonight, she's hosting Elysium inside the restaurant on the ground floor of the Diamond Yama. The Blush of Life darkens her skin so that the bone white of her knee-length halterneck dress is even more striking. Her ebony hair is tied back in a low bun, and the palette of her makeup reminds you of Japanese cherry blossoms in bloom.

You shrug as you sip the blood in your crystal glass and rest an elbow on the bar. "Might be a little early to drink to my success. Crossguard Security has yet to become profitable, after all."

"That is true. However, I am confident that you will succeed in your endeavor." Sierra's words carry conviction, as though she were stating a law of the universe.

You can't help but smile as you look away from Sierra and out at the dining room. At least a dozen Kindred are milling around, drinking their fill of the fresh blood Sierra's ghouls are serving. "So how goes Clan Lasombra's efforts to integrate with the Ivory Tower? I'm impressed by the turnout tonight."

Sierra straightens her posture with pride. "Part of the reason I'm so sure of your future success is that your target demographic is the same as mine - Kindred requiring temporary assets, be they havens or bodyguards. The Ventrue and Toreador have a tight grip on the city's service industry, but I'm confident that at least some in attendance tonight will be amenable to an agreement."

"I see. Can we expect to see new shadowy faces in the coming nights?" Your smile falters upon seeing the dark look on Sierra's face. "I'm sorry. Did I say something wrong?"

Sierra shakes her head. "My apologies. It's just that I've received word from my sire that a rival from within our clan - one Eustace Lancaster - is in the city and seeks to destroy him."

"If that's the case, then Mr. Lancaster is in for the fight of his unlife. I've asked around about your sire, and from what I can tell, he used to be the Sabbat's equivalent of a Hound, right?"

Sierra nods. "We call them Templars, but yes. In life, Talley hunted Lupines for sport. In death, his quarries have only gotten more dangerous. I do not doubt that he would triumph over Eustace Lancaster should things come down to a straight-up fight. However, Cainites do not survive hundreds of years by picking fights they will almost certainly lose. Should Lancaster attack Talley from an unexpected angle, my sire may meet his Final Death."

"I understand. When the time comes, you know where to find me."

Sierra lets out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Arturo."

The two of you drink blood together in comfortable silence for a while. Eventually, as the server walks away with your empty glasses, your eyes meet Sierra's. There is now a tension between you, of a type you think you recognize but dare not give a name. Only when Sierra rests her hand atop the back of your palm that you realize your suspicion is correct. Still, you have to be sure. "Are you…making a move on me?"

Sierra smiles. "I wouldn't be much of a Magister if I couldn't go after what I want, and what I want is you."

You swallow hard, and your voice comes out hoarse. "Just for tonight, or…?"

"I'm not asking you to swear your undying love and devotion to me. All I ask is that you explore the possibilities with me."

The sly grin on Sierra's face fills your head with far too many ideas. You try to calm down and think straight before your body spontaneously combusts. Much of your brain is shouting at you for even considering Sierra's offer.

You've got a business to think about now! She represents the Lasombra in Chicago! You're just a Sewer Rat who got lucky. The only way this relationship can end is with one of you turning to dust at the hands of the other!

However, part of you can't help but want to see where things go. Sierra isn't some Degenerate who'd make you fall in love only to break your heart as a way of passing the time. You also can't help but respect how she came to Chicago, knowing that the price of failure would be to stand atop a funeral pyre. Despite that, she set aside whatever fears she had to ensure the future of Clan Lasombra. Wouldn't that determination be ideal in someone standing by your side?

Eventually, after what seems like far too long, you're able to respond to Sierra.

[] [SIERRA] You squeeze her hand. "Alright, let's do it. I'm interested in seeing where this goes."
-[] I admire the way Sierra has triumphed over adversity. She'd make a great partner.
-[] I can hardly refuse when an attractive woman makes the first move.
-[] A firmer alliance with Clan Lasombra's representative could be of great political benefit.
-[] Honestly, I don't want to be alone anymore.

[] [SIERRA] You pull your hand away.
-[] "It's not like I'm not interested, but now isn't a good time to start a relationship."
-[] "You deserve better than…
me."
-[] "I'm sorry, but I'm not just interested in you like that."
--[] It's too dangerous to get more involved with the Magisters than I already am.
--[] She only wants to use me to advance the interests of Clan Lasombra.
--[] I don't want a girlfriend who might throw me atop the funeral pyre herself.
--[] Sierra's just not my type.

Well damn. Honestly, I'm amenable. Sierra's cool and we've got good history. Definitely worth seeing how things go.

Not a fan of the other options. The first option is weighing the relationship too much when it's only date zero, third option's too mercenary, and fourth is just sad. Option two is nice, simple, and innocent enough.

The number of Kindred willing to date a Sewer Rat is not huge. The fourth option is there for those who want to roleplay Artie as desperate to avoid romancing a cousin-in-vitae.

Apologies fellas, y'all provided good reasons for your votes but I have to choose option 1. All the men folk in my family are Amazon chasers, myself included. The strength of mind and body that Sierra has shown, to me, makes her a good match in my books.

While the company has yet to be profitable, much less be in a position to provide a return on your investment, you're happy to content yourself with armed bodyguards to call upon should you anticipate violence.
On another note, I have two questions.
1) What skills could we improve to help our business and allies?
2) I assume we could bring Nick in on this by making him a retainer, but can we do that with Val? I know she was unsettled when she saw us unleash the beast, so if not, is there anything we can do to help her out?
