Lakshmibasti was changing radically. The last few decades had seen nothing less than what people were beginning to regard as the "fourth industrial revolution," as the STCFs went online in ever-greater numbers yearly. As the economy of the colony was no longer built on profit alone, older factories were able to keep pace with the newer ones constructed to supply the growing population, breaching the 15 million mark in the year 2461, as refurbishments and upgrading were no longer solely bound to money and could be supported by a wide variety of means and from a large pool of resources.

Alongside the general increase in industrial capacity, the sophistication of automated robotics and assemblies became ever more complex with each passing decade, new insights and new means incorporated planet-wide and with little hesitation by every factory. There was no reason not to because if a job was lacking, then people could band together to build another STCF with the help of other Unions and the government, adding more industrial capability to the nation.

That growth added to the sense of community slowly regrowing amongst the people, the scars of the civil war fading with every year, replaced by the hope of a better future, of the knowledge that the darkness of oppression and sneering autocrats did not hold mankind in their eternal grip. The future belonged to the people, and the people were the builders of the future. The future never seemed brighter, and many already brimmed with excitement at creating another beacon, among the no doubt myriad others, in the dark of space for the rest of humanity to look to and be inspired by, to see yet one more example of what democracy and equality could create for all peoples.

Yet, more than enough people weren't idiots; they knew that people would also be jealous and try to take with violence what they could buy with peace and materials. They needed to be ready to defend themselves and be able to do so in numbers that they didn't quite have.

Technology, once more, provided an answer.

[][Autonomous Soldiers] Pack Tactics

Space is no brainer if we want ot be a power when the time comes and if we give the soldiers robots they fight even better, in fear that their robot buddies that they tapped knifes and called staby, end up as a pile of scrap

These little buddies will lead our grunts to victory by maybe taking one bullet at a time for them! I wonder what kind of weaponry they'll have access to? Maybe a standard rifleman loadout or maybe they will have a more support role...

Years passed. Years turned into decades. Decades become the work of a generation as the people of Lakshmibasti turned their industrial and intellectual prowess toward the matters of progress for their children and a better future, hoping that that nebulous future and that promised "soon" would come at a time when their children and children's children could benefit from all that they sacrificed and all that they achieved for their sake.

It was not easy to once more climb back into the stars, the old ships either too rusted or far too removed from anything resembling maintenance to remain operational, with the matters of defense all too heavily weighing on the minds of the population as they once more turn their heads to the endless black abyss above their heads, its gaping maw promising riches and wonders as it all but ensures horrors and abomination beyond comprehension.

In the one hand, the young Federation wields an industry that is ever more automated and diversified, able to switch and change on the whims of the market and the needs of the people, never dependent on singular factors to construct and create what it has and needs. At the same time, the other holds advances in military technology, drones buzzing with rotors flying in the skies, keeping watch from on high as small spider-bots equipped with guns crawl along squads of meat and bones as they train for any eventually, be it terrestrial or astral.

And while they do so, rockets race into the skies, slow, then faster, then near daily, tens of thousands seeking employment and fulfillment in the stars, dropping mining operations, habitats, stations, and more on everybody in Ganeshaeshwaram, from Eufemia swarming with mirrors heating the moon to become an ocean planet to teem with oceanic life, Jovita burning in the fires of automated industry, atmosphere being stripped away with every year to become more Earth-like and hospitable to humanity, with even minor colonies created on those moons around Jayashristan, Turan, and Selma that have the proper gravity for long-term human habitation.

And yet, while the United Unions turned their attention from the significant items of the list of governance toward the smaller, but no less important, issues that had to be addressed on a daily basis and prepared for long-term implementation, such as policies on farming and ranching, infrastructure expansions, and space colonization, one other issue reigned supreme in the minds of the people: The Expedition.

Though the government had assigned it an official name, almost nobody not with a stick up their name called it The Expedition since it was created with a singular purpose: return to inhabited space and reconnect Lakshmibasti with the rest of humanity once more. Equipped with a recently constructed Jump Ship and a refurbished relic that had carried their ancestors to their new home, The Expedition was designed to carry with it everyday items and processed materials from their home, with information about their history and their breakthroughs in science, even as they remained painfully aware that almost all would likely appear like quaint antiquities compared to the advanced miracles of science they would no doubt have. The same miracles were another reason for The Expedition to set out with base items for all industries, hoping to barter and trade the same for information and research notes so that their home could catch up and not be caught with their pants down and centuries behind the rest of Humanity.

So, one day, The Expedition set out with high hopes and bright eyes, burning with a desire to show humanity at large that their enclave in this remote system had not fallen into barbarity and tyranny, and neither had it brought shame to the unity of mankind with ignorance and superstition.

They returned. Tales of tyranny, dictatorships, war, barbarity, social devolution into feudalism, war machines striding across the innocent and the future, and crimes uncounted arriving behind them, shattering the hope of a bright sea of lights welcoming them back into the fold.

Lakshmibasti was but one of the very few lights of reason left.

They had set out to find paradise.

They returned with tales of hell.
