The clock has struck one minute past midnight, and a world among the sea of stars begins to take shape.
Setting out amidst the first diaspora of Earth, a bevy of people from the Indian, Spanish, and Turkish cultures begins their trek through the void, backed by two corporations. One is focused on machinery and automation, and the other is a collective of workers seeking to terraform their new world to their designs.
And all five have arrived, though without some being lost to missjumps, around Ganeshaeshwaram, their new star, around which orbits Lakshmibasti, their new home.
Having begun to create their first city, Naya Ghar (नया घर), upon the terrestrial planet's surface, the settlers are suddenly thrown into disarray as the Demarcation Declaration cuts them off, and they are left to entirely fend for themselves.
Yet, under their First President, Ashia Gupta, the newly minted Authoritarian Democracy begins its first steps in its new autonomy, for good and ill...
The clock has struck one minute past midnight, and the 31st century sees the eternal war between the vainglorious and sneering lords high in their ivory towers continue ever onwards, ever more brutal in the lives destroyed, ever more horrific in the weapons deployed to snuff out the innocents, and ever more destructive as technology decays, and worlds slowly edge toward the abyss, no longer able to sustain their people, and maybe even wholly incapable of reaching into the stars and their brethren in the far-flung reaches of the void once again.
It is a time of suffering and war, where brother turns against sister, where the light of innovation dies under the heavy hands of ignorance, arrogance, and zealotry, and where those who rise above are cut down and used as fuel to dig ever deeper.
The 31st century is here, and with it, it will bring war on a scale that will devastate half of human space, a war that will see nations once upholding their ideals see them used as fuel for selfish goals, and a war that will see uncles against nieces, sons against mothers, and siblings against parents.
It is the 31st century, and for a people in the Periphery, all that which plagues those who think themselves above them has reached them with all the death, brutality, and misery they had believed themselves spared.
But, as historians will tell you, time and again, humanity has rarely given up when there was still hope for something better; it has always had those willing to fight and those willing to dream.
These people, these grieving parents who held the lifeless corpses of their children, these angry soldiers who had to watch as they were killed one by one without being able to kill as equals, those school children holding solemn vigil for the fallen, and the injured burning with righteous indignation, with even the politicians holding speeches and rallies to ignite a flame within the souls and minds of the crowds, all of them look toward the stars.
And they are unwilling to lie down and die without a fight.
But even the greatest fury relies on foundations, the deepest wrath depends on a cause, and the harshest reprisals require a target.
So, why not start at the beginning, then? Why not start... with the settlers who would craft this world into one that deserved the moniker of 'home'? And with the sponsors that enabled their flight over the void of space? Yes, this, alongside a direction, would be a good start. Don't you think so too?

Every spacecraft had a smell wholly unique to itself, distinct and utterly separate from even its closest siblings. Every day it flew through the void of space, every burn it undertook, and every freight it shipped, they all added to the near-fragrance of a crafts halls and corridors. It was an ever-present odor that faded from the noticeable to the background the longer a person remained on that specific spacecraft, eventually turning into a familiar embrace of comfort and home for those who left the confines of their chosen or assigned cans of metal floating at the orders of those who knew nothing of the beauty that was to float free, untethered, and eternal.
And, above all, it was a description that didn't border on the fetishistic, as Captain Ram Shaan's brother always insisted it does, because, unlike that philistine, he had a healthy appreciation for the poetic and the arts.
Shaking his head, Captain Shaan gently pushes himself onward through the hallway, the ship currently not generating any gravity with thrust or rotation, with his destination right in front of him. The bridge.
As always, the entire room was bustling with activity, people doing last-last minute checks and going over everything once more, data and numbers crunched a hundred times once more checked for any discrepancy, and, sitting imperiously "above" it all, was Captain Shaan's XO; Maria Ana Carmen Isabel Rosa Laura Josefa Cristin Marta Francisca Lucia García, or Maria, the most Spanish woman to ever woman or Spanish, according to any person that ever met her. Yet, despite her name (a joke between her mother and father who intentionally gave her the longest they could before the hospital started giving them the gimlet eye) being entirely impractical to use in conversations, she remained professional despite the 'deep insult to her pride and proud family history.'
Ram thought she was having fun with the whole thing, especially as she used her name to haze new personnel. "Maria, is everything going according to plan?" He asked her, ignoring all the hubbub about him entering the bridge, his XO looking at him with a grim face and a shake of her head.
"I'm afraid not, Captain. We are behind schedule by three minutes." He laughed at that, strapping himself into his chair, readying his workstation while booting up the various computers around him. "But, aside from you taking your time drinking a coffee, we have all ships loaded, all supplies stashed, the colonists eager to unpack from their cans, and the crew asking for overtime pay. Krishna's Gentle Hand and Istanbul's Secret docked an hour ago, and we are all waiting for the signal to begin the journey."
Captain Shaan smiled, leaning back into his seat at the reminder of the ships. Typically, any effort at colonizing anything relied upon a supremely wealthy individual, the backing of entire nations, or companies willing to strike it big or die trying. Neither his nor Maria's people had had much of the clout, or generous donors, required to settle off-world in large numbers like the Western World had. Poverty was not wanted by many of the new colonies, and only those who could buy themselves onto the ships were given passage, with no lottery or reserved places assigned to them. But now, with GWC and FMI sponsoring them, both companies willing to risk it all? They had a chance to stake another part of the night sky, to create a bastion for all that would come after and a waystation for an eternal drive outwards in a golden age sure to last a millennium and more!
"Then," Ram said with a grin, images of the future that awaited them all on this one-way trip playing in his mind, "let us begin. To our future! Hit it!"
And with that, energies pushed from storage to machinery, processes took offense at reality, and a fleet vanished in a flash of light, carrying with them the dreams and hopes of millions, alongside two companies eager to initiate their plans for the future. They may crash, fail, and leave horrific scars, but their impacts would shape the people setting out into the world.
What plans were those?

[X] [Glowple Worker Cooperative] 5-Year Plan: Terra Firma
The journey took months.
Weeks of nothing but checking the math, aligning the fleet, charging, and then, within one moment of contemptuous disregard for the laws of nature, the fleet blinked, sending out a pulse of light, before it re-appeared around another star, another system, and the process began anew, again and again, ever onward and away from Earth and inhabited space.
It wasn't without cost or perils. Four ships were lost with all hands on deck, their drives suffering missjumps in their plunge into the deep dark, and the names of their crew and passengers recorded to be remembered in a monument many swore to erect on their new home. But, eventually, even the longest journey must come to an end.
With one final flash, the fleet emerged above a Class A Star, its white-blue light gently cradling the exhausted people eager to see their new home for the first time, screens showing diagrams and real-time photos being crowded and eagerly shared across a dozen holds and a hundred hands. And what a system it was!
From the star outwards, a Barren Planet akin to Mars, yet white-grey like Luna, stood imperiously, two moons orbiting it. A wintry spectacle of ice and rock, occasional geysers spewing ice into the void of space, and another one. One that would become their new home, a planet prepared for their settlement by long-sent drones and crew, the early biosphere able to support the colonists as they would begin with the following stages themselves. It wasn't much to look at right now, moss and lichen the highest forms of life, but for those cramped in holds and surrounded by metal and machinery for months? They could already smell the forests, see the mountain ranges covered in jungles, hear the beaches, and could only anticipate feeling solid ground once more, eager to look up and see the asteroid ring surrounding their new home that was but a moon to another planet.
In comparison to the first, the second, a yellow-green Toxic Planet akin to Venus, orbited by another Venus-like moon, with its own sickly brown-yellow coloration, was nothing to write home about. Maybe chemicals or fuel could be gathered here, or some other use could be found, but for now, they were irrelevant.
The following three celestial bodies weren't planets, but Gas Giants, creatively named A, B, and C, respectively, before names could be chosen.
A was a Pink-Red Gas Giant, beautiful rings glittering with ice and minerals, as 34 moons wandered on their endless rounds, wholly uncaring about the fleet slowly setting course for the first planet and its moon.
B stood by, a slow meandering path that went clockwise to the counter-clockwise of the other bodies within the system, the Grey-Brown Giant surrounded by 53 cohorts who marveled and sang silent praises to their rings.
C, on the other hand, flew with sullen and bullish paths, elliptical and rising and dipping above and below the plane of this system, its Brown-Blue hues clashing with their 70 moon's glint and glimmer, their dances long ignored by the Giant.
And yet, if those celestial bodies could speak, they all would have asked themselves...
What names do these people give us?

The scream of landing ships hadn't stopped ever since Ravi had touched down onto Lakshmibasti, the empty plains of his new home welcoming him and his family with equally open and empty arms. The noise of construction hadn't stopped or retreated once throughout the last few weeks either, structures assembled from pre-constructed panels and modules rapidly rising into the sky and sprawling out from the central spaceport. Already, thousands were being housed on-planet, or on-moon, with hundreds of thousands of his fellow colonists eagerly awaiting their turn to descend onto the surface of their new home.
Yet, for all that they were working around the clock to kickstart the beginning colony, set up industries and agriculture, with hundreds of people setting out into the barebones wilderness to find the places their families would stake a claim to for the generations that would follow, there was still free time, and with it, discussions and arguments about many vital aspects of their new home.
One of which was the now months-old debate about what to call their capital city, the first city that would likely stand atop any other settlement for centuries to come. Names like Planetfall (grah ka patan/ग्रह का पतन) and New New Delih or New Madrid were being thrown around, with others added into the mix.
However, in the end, this one won out:
[] [Capital City Name] (Write-In)
Beyond that, there was also a silent, if no less fierce, competition and debate raging between the already emerging movers and shakers of their new home, the various backers, people, and their appointed Alliance Governor by the Terran Alliance fighting and jockeying for position and influence on the nascent government emerging. However, whatever voice and decision had been made, all of it was thrown into chaos when they received news from Earth and the Demarcation Declaration, the sudden realization that, whatever may come, they were now on their own, leading to panic and fear in many. Yes, they had jumped as far as they dared and settled a system at the farthest edge of the surveys conducted by governments and private entities. However, there still had been an underlying assumption that they could call for help should things fail utterly.
Now...they were cut off, wholly and entirely. They were left to fend for themselves, no help would come if asked, and the skies suddenly looked far more dangerous than before as desperation would surely come to those colonies dependent on aid and economic dependency allowed by the Alliance's umbrella.
What was also given beyond uncertainty was an opportunity to those colonists that had settled onto Lakshmibasti, sudden interest groups emerging to create a nation, not a mere colony, suited to their tastes.
Those of Indian heritage had long since suffered under massive overpopulation, a lack of resources, and the oppressive deals made to sustain themselves. Cultural, Religious, Societal, and Economic unrest never lent themselves to a stable or progressive government, the perceived, and sometimes true, exploitation by the West, further adding distaste to their forms of government. For them, styling their new home after an Authoritarian Democracy seemed to make sense, as strength, certainty, and stability would be essential if they wished to survive without backsliding technologically and societally.
On the other hand, the Spanish had never been subject to much exploitation by the West; they had "merely" suffered under tyrants, climate destruction, and the economic unrest that followed. For them, participation in the state apparatus was expected but not enforced and optional. Still, it was expected that the people's voice would be heard, if not always heeded, since there would always be corruption, nepotism, and bad-faith actors trying to gain advantages and power. Therefore, a Representative Democracy was seen as desirable by many, as none would be ignored or allowed to descend their people into tyranny.
For Feline Metalwork Incorporated, how the government would be structured was less crucial than its support of business and the continued patronage of their corporation, as they intended to make full use of their newly independent status to pursue Initiative Autobot to its fullest potential. Though, perhaps, a Plutocratic Oligarchy wouldn't be so bad? After all, they were here to relieve their people from labor and drudgery, so giving them some trust to do what is right in exchange for political concessions wouldn't be so wrong, would it?
The Glowple Worker Cooperative looked at the Demarcation Declaration and then at each other. Earth had just told them, and all other colonies farther than 30 light years, to fuck off in no uncertain terms, and it had relinquished all claims to those and them. Which meant...that they were, essentially, free to build a nation as they saw fit. Those who truly believed in the socialist cause sat down as the implications settled in, while those who had enjoyed the fruits of their labor enabled by Glowple being a Co-Op Corporation began to speed through what it could mean. A Council Democracy could start here, fully independent and free of the baggage of the Core...if only they took the chance.
Then again, fate and human nature create compromises that see things develop in ways none could foresee, but one thing is sure. Whichever group could convince the most people that their system was the best would see some turn away, while others would wait to subvert or take action once weakness showed itself. And a month after the declaration, a vote showed the will of the people.

[X] [Capital City Name] New Home (नया घर) Naya Ghar
A year had passed since the jokingly called DD-Day, and Naya Ghar had slowly calmed down from its chaotic hectic and colonial scramble to a more sedate organized hectic and scramble. The near entirety of the population now lived on Lakshmibasti, with only a few hundred sitting in orbit within a station deployed for the refueling of traders that, due to the declaration, were now even less likely to arrive. So the only ships that would likely dock here would be those sent out again, the Jumpships the people here had come in sitting around while their crews twiddled their thumbs or did maintenance checks.
However, those living on the actual planet now enjoyed the sights and sounds of a city created with pre-constructed modules and segments, streets arrayed in brutalist grids, and the feeling of endless opportunity slightly stifled by the fact that the highest life beside them and whatever hangers-on they had accidentally brought with them were moss and lichens. Despite that, milestones were still celebrated, such as Salik Uygun being welcomed as the first child born in their new home.
Yet, even as people eagerly, and with some ribbing and joking, tried to be someone to do a "first" here, another matter ended with the first year: the construction of the monument dedicated to those they had lost on their journey over to Ganeshaeshwaram. Located in the middle of the city, right before the exit of the spaceport, it would be the first thing that people would see and that which all who worked in the assembled buildings set aside for governance would look upon every day they entered and left.
[] [Monument to the Lost] (Write-In: What form does it take? Does it read anything on a plaque? Are future extensions planned in?)
Ashia Gupta, however, stood before the monument with a little more than the emotions of the other onlookers because a day before, she had been sworn in as the first President in a near-election of their new government. She clenched her hands clasped behind her as she pondered the future, her responsibilities, and the weight of the looks of all the generations after her on her. Whatever she decided upon, whatever great heights and abyssal failures would be on her shoulders, it all would touch and shape the lives of millions, if not billions, to come. They all would look back in history and see her at the helm of this now adrift ship let loose by a government that had already cast her people away from their side while they still lived on the same planet and now had done the same to them again when they had set out to be free.
Well, Ashia Gupta wouldn't be the one who presided over their fall into anarchy and chaos, ruin and desperation. She had been given a mandate by the masses to forge from three peoples one, from three scattered cultures one bastion to stand the test of time, and see them safe before all who would assault them, be it with honeyed words hiding poison or the thunderous roar of munitions spat against their works and hopes. No matter the enemies she would face from without and within, she would ensure her people would live, prosper, and rise. The people had spoken, even if some... misguided ones were protesting the voices of the majority.
They would fall in line soon enough. And if not? Well, she would burn that bridge when they reached it.
However, what was now more pressing than anything was to set the stage for the next phase of colonization. They had set down and created the means by which they would not starve or have their machinery break down, but they needed to survive the next five years. Most colonies failed within that time, and Ashia Gupta would do anything to ensure they survived any disasters that assailed them.
The First Steps Taken (Choose 3):
(2-Day Moratorium)
[] [First Steps] Secured Meals Edict - [Food]
What good is anything if we cannot feed our people? What good does it do to know we have shiny roads and grand festivals if we hunger and thirst for any scrap of sustenance? No, our people's needs must be met because society is ever only three missed meals away from anarchy. So let nobody be hungry because we lack food, and ensure that our people can build a legacy for their children and their children's children that will come after them in one strike. [] [First Steps] Industrial Autarky Edict - [Industry]
Our industrial capacity must expand to meet our industrial needs. Our industrial needs must grow to feed our industrial capacity. We cannot sit still; we must forge on in all things production and output. [] [First Steps] Living Space Edict - [Construction]
We have a city, yes, but what about roads? Power Plants? Purification stations, hospitals, clinics, schools, resorts, farms, logistical hubs, trains? What about all the things we need to be able to build the tools to build our future? One cannot expect us to rise if we must wade through knee-deep muck and mud while we transport a single crate instead of thousands wherever they are needed! [] [First Steps] Blue Skies Edict - [Research]
We cannot stand still while all others march into the future; we must take the time and resources to peel back the mysteries of the universe and how we may make it work for us instead of fighting against it! The flame of knowledge must not be extinguished, and the torchbearers must be given what they need to ensure we will never face a dark age of technology where a computer may be worshipped as a manifestation of a divine will. [] [First Steps] One People Edict - [Culture]
Three people from three different cultures have settled on a single planet and are now living in close proximity. It is inevitable that conflict will arise unless we do something to bring about a unified ethos and culture between our people to bridge the gap and lay the path to a single unified nation. Identifying commonalities, disseminating information to reduce miscommunications, and creating cultural festivals showcasing our proudest achievements alongside each other will bring us together to stand the test of time. [] [First Steps] Void Fortification Edict - [Space]
While we have no militarized spaceships, creating such shouldn't be that hard, nor should the design of automated space stations bearing weaponry. After all, any amount of damage is often dangerous, and shooting rocks flying with several %s of the speed of light at a spaceship will ensure that any attackers will consider fleeing or surrendering before being torn apart by our navy and void stations. [] [First Steps] Readiness Preparation Edict - [Military]
Space has now become far more dangerous than before, the Demarcation Declaration causing no small amount of chaos within the outer colonies, and we must assume that, if there are people aware of our location, they may choose to raid a recently established settlement before striking at neighbors that may have had decades of military build-up. Therefore, we must ensure that we cannot be taken by surprise or must appear too dangerous to fight. [] [First Steps] Open Eyes Edict - [Exploration]
While we have scouted our direct stellar neighbors out, we do not know if there are any planets, moons, asteroids, or gas giants with rare metals or biospheres just beyond our sight we might need. Should we fail to establish ourselves here, another planet that doesn't require complex and continued terraforming may be needed. At the same time, easy access to rare metals and minerals would boost our native industries without polluting our planet. [] [First Steps] Institute of Applied Robotics - [Feline Metalwork Incorporated]
The IAR stands proudly within the planetary industrial park, the engineers, programmers, and scientists within hard at work analyzing and developing drones, machinery, and robots that can take over jobs from our people so that they can focus on other things besides work. Though their work requires funding that could be put into enterprises that produce the items needed now, their work will bear far more fruits over the decades than a few years of production could provide in the grand scheme of things. [] [First Steps] Terra Firma Initiative - [Glowple Worker Cooperative]
The TFI is concerned with the continued terraforming of Lakshmibasti, as the current biosphere is practically non-existent in a depth capable of sustaining our people should we backslide technologically. However, with the creation of overseen farms, biomes, and the careful seeding of the planet with gasses, fauna, flora, and the application of various technologies, we should be able to turn our home into a world that stands as a peer to Earth itself!
