It's an age of wonder; it's been years since the great scientific, the Doctor Tadashi Hikari make a revolution around the world with his best invention, The Matrix.
A whole new virtual reality that can be accessed from anywhere in the real world, the old 2D webpages where replace with new and incredible virtual worlds, so easy to create that even kids could do it.
Of course this new "worlds" whole be just pretty decoration without a way to interact with them, so virtual avatars where created to act as navigators of this new reality. Called Navi for the initials of Nascent Virtual Intelligence, these new programs are very advance emulating emotions and personalities to an incredible degree, to they are still limited to obey their software no matter what.
The Navis are so common nowadays that they you can find them everywhere, from the handheld of a housewife that is looking for a new recipe, to the computers in a military base.
Of course not everything is perfect, sometime after the creation of the Navis a new generation of virus was born too, called Nascent Virtual Ruination Software or simply, Navirus, this virus were just as bad as the old generation's and sometimes much worse, they not only destroy everything at their path, they learn and reproduce in an incredible pace.
As response, new Navis and programs were created to fight against this threat; eventually virus "busting" become a common and popular activity in the matrix, actually people began to enjoy the battles so much that they create a whole new sport around it, with Navis fighting between against each other in "V-Battles".
Indeed this was an age of wonder.

When I enter the kitchen the first thing a notice is my mom trying to cook… and the all the smoke I thing she is failing, "Patrol, we did you let her cook again?" I ask with a sigh to mom's Navi.
A black screen appears in one of the walls with the Navi in question smiling a little.
"I'm sorry but she insisted, something about a nice breakfast for your first day."
I sigh again, mom is great as:

After a surprisingly nice breakfast, you can't ever go wrong with pizza, I was ready to go to school when mom decides to speak.
"I'm sorry about that, I really try to make you a nice meal… but I just ruined like always." She said dejectedly.
I looked at her for a few seconds and then hug her, "I know, don't worry pizza for breakfast is pretty good too." I answer with a smile.
She was surprise for a few second before hugging me back, "Heh, you're welcome I just wanted this day to have a nice beginning, considering that I have bad news for you." She said the last part after releasing me, with a frown in her face.

"Yes, he isn't coming home today as he promised."
Honestly I wasn't really surprised, after been his son for 16 years I was pretty use to this kind of thing, though it really make mom sad.

Explosive Rounds: Size 5 – RAM 0.6 – The rounds of the range weapon that Forte.exe has currently equipped explode at contact, range attack goes up by 3 points, but its speed is of the original stat.
Earth Breaker: Size 5 – RAM 1 – Forte.exe focus a huge amount of energy in his fist, then release that energy by punching the ground, the energy destroy the ground a few meters ahead of Forte, the attack is equal to the Melee Attack plus 4 points.

I must say I'm really surprise to see Hana so early in the morning, she usually gets late to school because her late nights game streamings, then again she is using the bench as a bed.

And that's how I began my morning… Though I'm not sure how I end at Connie's lap in the bus.

"Ugh, what happened? I feel like my head was hit with a brick." I complained.

"Hush Hana, you're the one that knock him out." Connie explained while checking my head.
"I'm victim here too you know! My head hurts too." I could hear the pout in Hana voice.
"Maybe, but your head is much stronger, I bet you could win against a bull with it." And it seems like Chie is finding all this hilarious, no surprises here.
"Bully, I'm being bully I say! Ugh whatever! What's the diagnostic Doctor Maheswaran?"
At that Connie blush a little before clearing her throat, "*Ahem* It seems like he doesn't have a concussion, never the less, I recommend rest and to avoid any strenuous action." She finished with a nod.
"And "He" can get up now?" I ask with a little smile.
Connie blush even more while trying to help me to sit right, "Oh sure sure! Here let me help you."
"Huff, ok, now, what happened after Hana knock me out?" I asked, and both Connie and Hana looked away while Chie snickered a little.
"Well Hana and I panicked a little, and no matter what she says, she was crying a little-"

"-That was until Connie appeared and took care of the situation… and then lecture us for 10 minutes." She explained.

The gamer, that still was pouting, changed her demeanor immediately, looking very proud or herself, "Well, I finally manage to drag my guild through the final dungeon of the last expansion of Galaxycraft! We're the first ones! By the time I finish it was already morning." She finished sheepishly.
Connie sighed, Chie and I just smile, headache aside, this was a typical morning for us.

After all that excitement in morning, it was nice to just chat calmly at our classroom.
"And she was all 'WHA!' And then her head goes 'CRASH' against his! And then he just goes 'bump' to the ground, and then…"
It's only Hana's Navi didn't fine to repeat the event to rest of the class.
"Dude, rough morning eh?" Asked Yosuke, he was a nice guy, but his mouth could put him in trouble.
"You could say that." I answered with a little smile trying to keep a light mood.
"I get you," He said while patting my back," but I know something that may cheer you up," he then look to both sides of his desk before continuing, "I hear that the new teacher is a total hottie, I'm sure will be focused this year if that the case!" He finished with a big smile.
I was going to answer but someone else did it first.
"Really now?"
"Totally! With a hot teacher I finally won't be distracted by the others beautiful girls in the classroom." He just continued without looking at the person with asked the question.

At that Yosuke finally decided to look at the person with he was talking.

"And after lunch we're going to make a little test!" The teacher said, and keeps talking before the class could complaint, "but don't worry if going to be a fun test, a battle test! After all in this time knowing how to fight virus is a very important skill that you need to know."

"So… what you're going to do." Was the first thing that Chie said after we all four take a seat at the rooftop.
"I don't know, do you thing I can past the test just with a default navi?" I asked with a little hope.
"Probably not." Just for Hana to destroy them.
"And I still don't know why you don't have a custom navi, with your dad job should be easy to get one?" She asked.
"Yes, is just… None of the models that I have saw called my attention." I explained with a sigh.
"And what about creating your own?" Connie asked.
"More of less the same, I can't just imagine a good navi, I always end thinking of the little thing I don't like about him or her, and end in nothing." I groan.
But before I could rant more, a whistle was heard from my pocket, I take my handheld looking at my new message… from my dad.
Son, I really sorry that I could return like I promise, but something really important happened and I can leave my work knowing that I'm one of the few people that can fix it, I'm sending you something, not as a apologies because I don't I deserve one, but as a gift, take care of him, I'm sure you are going to do great thing.

"Well duh! Suddenly receiving a navi when you need it the most? That's videogame material right there, you have to do it!" Hana explained, very excited about it.
I just stared at the program for a few moments…
"Very well." As soon as I say that my 3 friends move their head to look at the screen of my handheld.

Elemental Affinity: Here are 4 "elements" in the matrix, many navis have neutral elements, but here are some ones that have a connection with a specific element, those navis have advantages and disadvantages, both in and out of a battle.
If a navi with an elemental advantage attack another navi then the attack becomes two levels stronger.
The elemental roulette is:
Fire > Wood > Electricity > Water > Fire
Example:
A fire navi with a melee attack of F+++ attacks a wood virus, the attack becomes E+.

"Very well, Forte, could you please enter the matrix of the school?"

With the image on the screen turn black for a moment before showing Forte at the rooftop of a digital version of the school.
"Meh you would think that the artist that made the virtualscape would make something more creative than that, whatever, Neptune let's make feel our new friend welcome, shall we?" Hana said the last part with smirk that really didn't trust.
With that the rest of the girls bring out they own handhelds and send their navis too.
Soon enough Forte was surrounded by 3 female navis.
"Surprise tackle hug attack!" Yelled the little navi of Hana, Neptune.
Forte didn't say anything and simply move to a side dodging the little purple missile.
"Awa awa awa" Who fall to the ground and because of the momentum rolled a few times, "Wow you're really fast nepu!" She said while still on the ground, "But that was mean! You're supposed to let me hug you and then act all shocked! That's how it works right Samus!" She finished sending a pout to blonde navi in the group.
If my memory serves me right, she is Samus, Connie's navi.
"*giggles* Well, how can you expect him to know what to do? He's new after all." The blond navi answered with a little smile.
"Hmmmm true, true, we have to teach him a lot." Neptune continue while nodding… still on the ground.
"You two are being rude to our new comrade," Said the last navi, "My name is Tomoe and on behalf of my mistress let me welcome you to our group." She finished with a short bow.
"Oh you're are right *ahem* hello my name is Samus and is nice to meet you." Samus presented herself waving a hand and still smiling.
"Right, right! My name is Neptune! But you can call me Senpai! Don't worry as your superior I will do my best to give you my knowledge." She said, finally getting up and giving a thumps up.

"Gig I recommend to activate the projector mode of your handheld to have a better view of the field." She instruct me and I did just that, pointing the projector to one of the walls at the school, them a light come out of my device and the screen was showing on the wall.
"Perfect, now the first thing to remember is that your navi must activate the battlefield program, this will force the virus and other programs around him to move at human speed, they're programs after all, if they were moving at full speed we won't be able to help them."
I nodded, it makes seems, a pc could hundreds of different things in just a blink; the navis should be much different.
"Now this first fight we're going to do it with Forte default weapons to see his average strength, alright? Beginning at 3-"
Forte meanwhile have his full attention at the training program that looked simply like a blue ball of light.

The ball began to shake and turn from blue to yellow.

Then it turns red.
"-Go!"
Then, from the light a virus appears, it looked like a cyclops with a huge shield and a spike ball at his right hand.
"Ok, Forte this is the plan."

The Cyclops immediately noticed him, he them move his right hand back and quickly to the front at throwing the spike ball at high speed.
"Now dodge!" I yelled at Forte.
He quickly side-step to the right to avoid it, sadly he wasn't fast enough and the deadly weapon managed to crash at him.
"This is nothing!" Fortunately it seems like him is quite resilient, just before the spikes reach him, he put both of his at front of him caching the ball, "*hmpf*." Sadly he didn't manage to stop it completely and ended being dragged backwards a few inches.
Then the virus began to retract his weapon, without doubt to make another try at Forte, but before he could finish I saw a chance.
"Now! He's distracted retracting his weapon, shoot him!" I commanded.
"Gladly." Forte then summoned his weapons, a pair of buster cannons that replace both of his hands, he take aim at the virus head and release a barrage of quick shoot.
Just before the spike ball returned completely the virus exploded.
"Yes! Good job Forte!" I could help but celebrated, and I think a saw a little smile in his face.
"D'awww so cute."
"*Snicker*"
I immediately stopped and tried to not blush at Hana teasing tone or the mocking laugh of Chie.
Luckily I was saved from more embarrassment by an alert from my handheld.

"Well it seems that with that program you aren't going to have problems in the test, right?" Chie smile while patting my back.
"Yeah and if he can defeat the other two virus of the program Forte may have a better chance,
Just imagine all the skills that he could learn." Hana practically have star on her eyes.
"Hum, guys? Classes are about to star, I don't Gig is going to have enough time to fight against the other two viruses." Connie explained with a worry look.
"Darn, ok, ok I think we can take…"

"I will defeat it." Was the only response of my navi.
"Ok! But before that I will explain a very important knowledge that any battlers should know, Battle and Support Programs!" Connie said, it seems she was excited about the next part.
"No all navis are as strong or fast as many viruses in the matrix, that cause a lot damage when virus attack public places and here aren't some battle navi around., and sometimes even battle navis have troubles in while fighting, that's when these program become useful.
Battle Program are software that replace the default weapon of your navi for something else, sometimes they have they own stats and sometimes they share the stats of your navi, they're designed with the purpose of give an edge to a defenseless navi, but remember unless you have a specific handheld or Support Program, you can only have one battle active.
Support Programs on the other hand are much more diverse in utility, here are Support Programs for almost everything! From flying to being able to break structures with just one touch! Of course here are silly ones too, like one that make your navi have a rose background when pose or thing like that, and like Battle Programs here's a limit of how many of these programs you can have active at the same time, usually the number of "slots" is 3 but here are some handhelds and programs that can change that." Connie finished, a little out of breath, but cleared proud of being able to explain all that.
"Ok… I think I got everything." I said to her., and she just smiled.
"Good, now I think that the next virus may be a little too fast for your navi, so I think you should install a support program and active it to compensate for it."
Before she could continue Hana interrupted shoving her handheld at my face.
"Like this one!"

"And I will allow you to have it as a gift." Hana continue with a smug smile, "And as an apologize for knocking you out." She quickly whispered the last part.
I just smile and thank her.
"Perfect! Now you see these numbers in the program?" Connie asks, and I nod, "These represent the size of the program and how much RAM they will use when active, you can have as many programs as you want inside your handheld as long as you have the memory for it, but you can only have active programs if they don't use more RAM that what you have.
For example, let's say that, you have a RAM of 5, a battle program that use 4 RAM and two support programs that use 1 each, if you activate the battle then you will able of active only one of the support programs, even though you have two more "slots" your handheld simply won't be able to run them, get it?"
"Yeah."
"Very well, in this kind the situation the best strategy is to simple activate and deactivate the programs depending of your need. I would usually warn you that while you wait for the programs to "swap" your navi could be vulnerable without any program to help him, lucky your handheld is capable of "swap" between programs very quickly so that won't be a problem."

From the ball of light comes forward what I can only describe as a tank tread, just smaller than Forte by a head, with a cannon on top, I knew some virus look weird but this take a prize.
Before I could make a strategy the virus quickly became to move around the roof, fast enough to avoid the shoots of Forte without doubt.

...guys, our Navi's name is "FORTE" right now his defense & core code are shit, the way forward is clear, plus, our default loadout is twin busters & we have a fencer's stat build...who made his build?!
[X] Dash: Size 4 – RAM 0.5 – This program allows the navi to have, for a second, 4 extra speed points, then the navi must wait 5 before they can use it again.

While thinking of a strategy I remember one time that mom was complaining about an annoying virus in the square's matrix, the virus description was just like this one, and mom was complaining because of all collateral damaged that the virus caused with his… Bombs!
"Forte, activate the Dash program and prepare yourself! That virus is going to throw bombs at you." I quickly commanded.
"Understood." Was his only reply, before moving to the side with a dash to avoid one bomb, half a second later it explode with a loud bang.
…You know, we're very lucky that the school allows student to battle as long is in the public section of the matrix, otherwise we could be really at trouble because of that crater.
"Are you alright Forte?" I asked a little worried, sure he managed to move in time but that blast was quite strong.
"I'm unharmed, shooting now." He immediately summoned his weapons and began to shoot at the virus.
Unfortunately for us the cannon with treads dodge the barrage, moving quite fast, before shooting 3 more of his bombs.
Forte managed to dodge two of them, but the last one got too close to comfort.
"*Tsk* Stay still." Forte grunted with a frown on his face before shooting more, only to the virus to keep dodging.
…This isn't going anywhere, we need another plan.
"Forte stop," He does so with a look of frustration on his face, I think that's the first emotion that he has shown since I install him.
"Wait until I give you the signal then shoot everything you have, understood?"
He just nods.
I keep my gaze at the virus and waited until it began to shoot bombs again.
"Now shoot at the bombs!"
Forte wide his eyes understanding my plan and shot burst of energy right at the bombs that weren't very far from the virus yet.
The result was immediate, the bombs explode in a chain reaction and the blast of the explosion engulfed the virus… and blasted part of the roof, really glad we're allowed to battle.
"Did we win?" I ask with hope.
Forte just stares at the smoke for a few seconds before smiling in satisfaction.

Immediately after selecting the next upgrade we were congratulated by both my friends and their navis.
I try to ignore the little warm on my cheeks.
