Cardin Winchester was heavily wounded in an attempt to defend his teammate and died of his wounds before he could be evacuated. His family has asked that we not hold our customary ceremony of passing and that they will assume

What.

Brochester. BROCHESTER NO!

Working on the battle were in Team Cardinal Was shattered, I'm going to try and give Cardin about as good a death as I can write. I'll post the first half of the Omake on the other thread for comments and review before I write the remaining half if anyone's interested.

Done with project stuff a day ahead of schedule (sort of). Time to get shit faced and write~

Got some safely saved drunk plans in the works so expect feelz when you least expect it. I promise you won't feel the determination coming :3

@konamikode Sorry to bug you in the throes of writing but, for worldbuilding purposes in this campaign, how much is a lien worth compared to real-world money? Basically how much lien would a standard-quality mechashifting eapon for a Hunter cost? Thousands of Lien? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands?

Team Mango Omake Part 1/2 The Forever Fall mission Viewpoint. Word Count 1067

Jet drew and sheathed his axe.

The bullhead shuddered through it's final acceleration, jostling the seated teen and the surrounding hunters in training.

Another ten minutes would have them in position for the drop then it would be all action and little thought. Jet's eyes flicked around him taking in his team, all doing mission prep in some form.

Carl shifting his cutlass through chambers and double checking the cartridges positions in his belt and running his hands over them continually.

Kelly snapping her dagger pistols out in front and mecha-shifting them back and forth between modes.

Cindy rubbing in sunscreen?

Frowning he drew and sheathed his axe again.

He would need to talk to Cindy later about switching to zinc or having more natural sunblock made up as in future sessions she would be smelt a mile away by a beowolf. Too late to address now but worth commenting on for later.

Jet's hands idly traced over his equipment for the day all set for the landing zone and spare ammo stashed but reachable in a moment..... another thing that the others would need to have mentioned before future missions.
Jet sighed, flipping open his scroll and leaving some reminders about all the little things to point out in an AAR for next time.

He hadn't thought he was going to be named a leader with this years students after last year. That year in the corps and having the experience had placed him head and shoulders above the team for this position. Oh skill wise in one on one a straight up fight he knew Kelly and Carl could probably handle him easily, Cindy not so much... But strength wasn't everything, preparations and mentality, just knowing what the objectives were for missions or a fight made the world of difference.

He really owed his older corpsmen platoon a care package or ten.

He hadn't realised how much better off he was from them looking out for him after his abysmal performance last year. He had been so depressed for so long about his non combat semblance. The Corps had been a good place for him and he had come back better.

" Why do you do that?"

Cindy's voice lanced through his recollection of harder times.

"Sorry do what?" He gave her a look.

Her gaze was fixed on his axe already going through another redraw action.

"That. Why keep drawing it over and over again?"

Jet blinked and let out a rueful chuckle. He had to quickly raise his hand and gesture so that she understood he wasn't laughing at her.

" It was something I learnt in the corps. They always tried to minimise delay in actions the one they always said was most important and should be practised the most is drawing your weapons and sheathing them. Being able to do so quicker means more chance in deflecting opening strikes."

" Muscle Memory" Carl grunted out. Jet flicked eyes over to him and Kelly to see them both paying attention.

"Yeah, that's it Carl. Your body has to be used to a set pattern of movements, the more you practise the faster the action is. a Good hunter should actually make basic movements automatic before worrying about putting on a good show."

" This from Mr Stylish, did you hit your head this morning, are you coming down with something?" The slight uptick at the corners of her mouth showed Kelly was just teasing.

Jet couldn't resist drawing, spinning the axe back and forth between hand quickly before sheathing it. To Kelly's rolled eyes he merely winked.

" I got plenty o'style. It's just the good kind is all. Seriously though with those pistols a quick draw would be great for you to have. Be scary with your semblance and all."

Kelly seemed to think this over before nodding and holstering Snip and Snap before going through the motions slowly. She repeated the motion slowly just like her instructor likely showed her with new patterns of movement ironing out flaws and finding any catches that might be there for later correction.

Beside her, Cindy huffed before redirecting his attention. " Why'd you choose this mission anyway? The Sap mission would have been more fun and Luscinia was on the other mission but no we had to choose the Port adventure mission."

"More Grimm?" Carl suggested tilting his head to look at Jet.

"Yeah it's cause of the grimm, but also this is our first mission this one doesn't just have Port but also Goodwitch and she's strong in case anything goes wrong. We didn't get the chance like other teams to see how we click as a 4 man team yet and this is actually the safest with us going in expecting danger the others all have aspects of busywork, ambush prep or as the corps say, hurry up and wait to them. Those are important, but let's see how we tick in actual combat first. That's why I suggested doing it in intervals first with people trading partners every 60 minutes of fighting after the first three hours we would all click in an actual setting that much better. We neeed to have the slow and steady approach training at Beacon is one thing but no reason to go off too fast for glory now, later we go slow again as a 4 man unit. Baby steps. We don't have to do anything amazing today."

Around him Kelly, Cindy and Carl all blinked at him for a few seconds.

Jet gave himself a pat on the back for getting away with stealing his corps leaders opening speech from last year.

Carl nodded slowly before speaking up again. " Huh that makes a lot of sense, you and I have really only had one fight and the girls are a long time pair. Might actually take longer to get into the swing of things. We've really only eaten, trained and slept together as a team."

Whilst the girls face palmed, Jet just offered a smug grin.

" Hmm yeah that's true might need a few partner switch up and team training sessions. Also Carl......phrasing."

For a second Carl was clueless before it clicked to the entire bullhead's amusement.

Whilst Carl spluttered denials and the surrounding teams jeered team Mango, the Bullhead began to descend to the LZ, prompting a bustle of last minute gear checks.

Cindy rubbed the last of her Sunblock in.

Kelly flicked out her pistols then back.

Carl Got to his feet and jumped up and down to check the firmness of his gear.

The Bullhead doors opened before landing in the clearing.

Jet drew his Axe.

'Show time'

AN.
Jet was surprisingly easy to write for considering how difficult he was to create compared to the other three who practically wrote themselves after the omake.

@Viva01; Near the end of your omake there's a typo; 'Jet Drew and Sheathed his axe'; Wouldn't that mean that he pulled it out before.

Second Part of An Auspicious Reminder; 3.27k words.

An Inauspicious Reminder Part 2

Samson Reyn

Shifting the metal rod he held in his hand through the the remnants of the campfire which had formed the centerpiece of the joint campsite Samson's eyes focused on the the embers watching as an almost pitifully small fire to come to life. The eighteen year old did his best to stifle a yawn as his eyes tracked the the scattered embers amongst the charcoal, ashes and burnt wood that had been their sole source of warmth during the night.

At least, Samson thought to himself as he rolled his shoulder, they had a relatively peaceful shift for the morning. Something he knew was going to be in very should supply eventually; life was unfair like that after all.

Reaching over with his free hand he grasped their last small log and placed it carefully onto the fire allowing to spread and grow. With that accomplished he dropped the metal poker, letting it to fall to the ground before raising his head to look around.

Across from where he sat was was the expanse of forest he and Bethany had been watching while the assigned sentries of the other team watched their own sectors. To his right and a half a dozen feet in front of his was his partner in question who at the moment had her back resting against a large rock within their camp while she seemed to have her attention focused on something that she was tapping away on her black Scroll.

Seemingly he thought; Bethany's semblance did allow her to cheat when it came to taking watch. Not that she could be pumping it constantly but between her occasional use of it as well as a frontier trained observation she was nevertheless effectively keeping watch.

"Working on homework Bethany." Samson asked curiously as he looked towards his partner who for her part glanced up at him and nodded before speaking softly.

"Going over a design for submission in the Smithy."

That made sense he thought; Bethany had been mulling over what she wanted to submit for their assignment. Which either left it as a helmet or the pistol-dagger that she was contemplating as a clos in backup for her Rifle-Glaive hybrid.

"Helmet or the secondary weapon?" He asked curiously; for the assignment his own project was something he had had in mind for sometime. Namely upgrading his shield so that he could channel his semblance through it which in theory was relatively simple but to try and do so without compromising the shield's defensive ability. It made it all just a bit more difficult.

"The Pistol-Dagger." Bethany replied before continuing, explaining her reasoning. "I was thinking about the helmet but I was thinking about waiting for input and opinions by the other members of the club and to maybe getting their help in making a suit of armor."

"That'll be expensive and time consuming you know." He returned as he mulled over what she had said; it was a bit ambitious for a freshmen but with help by the other members of the club and to make it her long term project. It made it a bit more workable that it would otherwise be.

Before Bethany could reply the blue haired girl on the other team came walking towards them, calling out to the pair as she did so. "We've got a kettle going do either of you want some tea?"

"Green please." Bethany murmured shyly with a nod before he made his own request. Nodding the girl gave a smile to his team leader and trotted off towards where the other awake member of her team was setting up the kettle and single burner stove when a series of noises including the sound of chicken of all things and a sharp yelp echoed from their team's tent.

Well Samson thought to himself as a very wide awake Roy emerged from the tent his weapon in one hand while the other tugged his armored vest. He was followed almost immediately by a rather annoyed if not irritated Shayna who was glaring at the back of her partner's head.

"Seriously Roy what was that?" Shayna muttered half asleep. "A Chicken alarm without warning?"

"Well yeah; I wanted to wake up on time." The faunus teen replied sheepishly as he pulled on his body armor before glancing around. "What time is it?"

"It's about six twenty." Bethany replied as she collapsed her Scroll and stood up. "After breakfast we should-"

A roar followed by a scream and shouting erupted not far from the campsite, interrupting Bethany and sending the gathered students shooting to their feet with their weapons at the ready. Ursai, Samson thought as his head snapped around trying to pinpoint the origins of the roar and screams; having recognized the distinct sound of the bear-like Grimm's roar.

Thinking quickly Samson thrusted Lightshow towards the fire and activated his semblance snuffing out the fire and drawing what usable useable light it had generated into the head of mace. He glanced towards his leader who seemed to fall still her eyes closed with concentration when she spoke .

"Urasi… they're at Cardinal's camp." Bethany murmured as her eyes widened in realization, turning towards the direction of the camp in question she moved towards it at a sprint Fox-Fang held at the ready. Pumping his legs against the ground Samson fell in with her along with the others; both of Brass and the other team.

"Shit shit shit." Shayna muttered out loud as the group of eight students drew closer to the sounds of battle which only seemed to intensify with every step. Re-adjusting his grip on both his shield and on his empowered Lightshow Samson gritted his teeth as they finally round the corner of a boulder to come well with sight range of the battleground several dozen feet down the slope of where their own camp was located.

Team Cardinal's camp was in disarray; the fire pit which would have held their campfire was scattered as if knocked over mid rush, their various backpacks were likewise strewn about but none of that was what caught his attention. No; Some two dozen meters away from the campsite was the figure of one of Team Cardinal's members. The blond haired tan color armored member of the team who was lying on the ground, moaning in pain, his armor stained in blood while a pool of it formed around his prone form.

His attacker.. His attacker was massive; vaguely bear like in appearance the monster towered over its lesser brethren massively belying its age. Covered in massive spikes, bone plate like armor with the Grimm's district and eerie smoke emanating from it's body. The massive creature rose up on its hind-legs and roared, sending a chill down his spine as the creature's opened maw revealed the red light which seemed to form the core of all of its kind before it fell back to the ground hard enough to shake nearby trees.

Ursa Major; an elder form of the common Ursa, creatures which were likewise present. How… how had they gotten past Group One? Never mind he thought as Bethany took a step forward her face was as if it was carved from stone.

"Fall in now." Bethany snapped in a tone that was all but at odds with the nominally quiet social adverse teen, having spoken his partner and leader put her words into action running down the slope towards the battle giving orders all the while. "James take the left, we'll go right."

The directive given Samson pushed and maneuvered himself so that he was to the left and fore of his leader; ready to engage and defend. As they ran he watched as Team Cardinal did their best to fight the Ursai pack off. The mohawked twin dagger wielder; Russell darted around the Major's reach trying to slash his daggers into its thick hide as the team's halberd wielder fought and tried to hold the tems right flank only to be driven back by the combined efforts of two hyper focused Ursai.

Then there was their leader; Cardin, the tall muscular light brown haired leader of Team Cardinal smashed the massive head of his mace into the side of the head of an overeager Ursa which when timed with the simultaneous detonation of the Fire Dust in his weapons head left the now headless body to be flung backwards before crashing to the ground. Cardin however wasn't finished driving the monsters from his friend; twisting to dodge the attempted strike of another Ursa's claws he slammed his mace into its side forcing the Grimm back heavily injured but not quite dead. His attack had however left the teen exposed, an exposure which the Ursa major exploited ruthlessly with the massive creature slamming its paw into the team leader hard enough to send him crashing into the ground near his fallen, bleeding teammate, his Aura flaring with light.

Shit, Samson snarled inwardly as they came closer and closer to engagement range when the Ursa Major moved to try and finish both fallen students. Roaring the Grimm attempted to charge only for its attempt to be stalled when a series of bullets to hammer into its armored head; not enough to break through its thick bone plate but enough to deter it if temporarily.

Turning his head as he ran he saw Bethany halt her sprint her rifle shouldered, eyes locked on the massive Grimm when she spoke, giving orders once more. "Roy; barrier, Sam; Flashbomb."

The order given both teens complied as the Ursa attempted to charge once more at the slowly rising Cardin this time they were close enough Samson thought with gritted teeth as he snapped his right arm forward sending an orb of light towards the Grimm. It was then that two things seemed to happen at once down at the battlefield. The first was that the Ursa Major charging forward with an almost reckless abandon crashed into a mono-direction field of blue light which battered from the Ursa flicked in time with a grunt Samson could hear from Roy's direction. The second and one which helped fully stop the massive Grimm in its tracks was the orb which detonated not far from the face of the massive bear like abomination forcing it to a stop as it and the other Grimm to try and shake the effect off.

Then they were there.

Throwing themselves forward Team Brass attacked the engaged Ursai pack at an angle. From the corner of his eye he saw Shayna leap onto one of the Grimm, hacked her weapon's axe heads deep into its unarmored flesh sending the beast roaring and thrashing, leaping off of the wounded Grimm she spun around her twin weapons transforming into their pistol mode with which she unloaded into it, finishing it.

Letting out a roar of his own Roy fired his shotgun into an Ursa at near point blank range, it's pellets digging into its flesh driving it back only for the faunus teen to transform his weapon into its axe form with which he continued his assault.

All the while the sharp cracks of Bethany's rifle sent heavy round down and into various Ursa wounding or otherwise wounding them before she herself closed the distance driving a wounded Ursa from the injured Sky with at first bayonet and then with sufficient space to deploy her full glaive assisting the other polearm wielder.

For his part Samson was not far behind as he moved against an isolated Ursa. Allowing it to close he grunted as he brought his shield up to block the swing of its claw before hammering back with his mace. With the newly gained space he smashed the somewhat still dazed Grimm in the face with his shield before he brought his mace crashing into its jaw, breaking it in the process.

All around him he could hear the sounds of battle as the remaining members of Team Cardinal and the four of the other team joined the fray. Yet it was Cardin who caught his attention; undeterred by his all but lost Aura the team leader placed himself between his still wounded teammate and the Ursa Major defiantly before charging the still dazed monster.

Sprinting forward the teen slammed his mace into the Ursa's right paw with enough force to smash bone and flesh alike sending the massive Grimm to jerk back in rage and pain. Leaping up with what energy he could he brought his mace head down onto its head hard enough to crack its skull plate sending the beast reeling back once more.

Then the Ursa moved bashing its head into the freshmen student hard enough to cause his aura to flare once more but this time lost completely. Samson felt his heart hammer in his chest as the other students were at last able to turn their attention to the massive monster sending bullets, bolts and even gouts of fire into the wounded monster. Too late, he thought as the world seemed to slow as he charged forward when the elder Ursa shot its remaining able clawed forelimb into Cardin just as he detonated his mace's head one last time into the direction of the Grimm, despite that however the blow connected sending him back with a cry and a splash of gore across the damaged ground.

A heartbeat later Samson was upon the heavily injured monster, skidding to stop before its head he swung lightshow into it's broken headplate bringing his body into the motion, finishing it off once and for all.

For a moment the battlefield grew silent before one of team Cardinal's remaining members let out a cry and raced to his wounded friends. Within seconds the still able teens were mobilizing to try and save their wounded classmates. Above the clamor Samson listened as his partner activated her Black Scroll and sent out a distress call.

"Team Brass; Group Three." His partner snapped into her Scroll. "We need medevac at-"

Shayna Meadows

"-and that's… that's when we loaded the wounded… and Cardin onto the Medical Bullhead before we went to retrieve our gear and boarded the second one." Bethany finished softly as she let out a breath and her shoulders slumped. Hands in her lap she looked away from the Headmaster of Beacon Academy and into her lap.

Watching her teammate finish the recounting of the events of their Forever Falls assignment, Shayna winced as her mind returned to the image of Cardin just laying there; dead, covered in blood and donned in the broken remnants of his personal armor. Dove had from what he understood been taken to the emergency room but there was no telling if he was actually alive or in what condition either.

She knew that being a Hunter was dangerous, the training to become one likewise so but to lose people like they had when they were right there...

It had been less than three hours since the battle in Forever Falls and they; the members of team BRSS as well as Argent's team were within one of the conference rooms of Beacon's Campus where they had been shepherded off to shortly after being checked over by medical. Neither of the two active members of team Cardinal were present; both teens having been wounded if lightly during the battle itself.

"Thank you Miss Rosenthal." Professor Goodwitch replied with a nood, whatever emotions she was feeling hidden behind her calm if strict demeanor. Also within the room besides the eight students and the professor were a few other members of the faculty whom Shayna was not in the mood to recall or note at the moment.

"Despite the... circumstances and opposition that all of you had faced; your performance was admirable." Goodwitch continued in her seemingly forced calmness as she nodded towards the leader of the other team. "Mister Ferrus you and your partner's talent with triage had helped keep Mister Bronzewing alive long enough to be medically evacuated and Miss Rosenthal your talent for assessing and taking action had likewise kept any more students from lose their lives during the battle."

With that said a silence fell over the occupants of the room. Was she seriously trying to cheer them up? Shayna wondered with a slight frown; because it certainly wasn't working since she wasn't feeling any better for failing nor did she think anyone else did either.

"We'll also have the time and location for counselling sessions with applicable members of the faculty sent to your emails." Another member of the faculty; the name of whom slipped from Shayna's mind added. "It's entirely optional but if you need someone they or the members of your club Team Brass will be willing to talk with you; it's not easy to be in the center of the storm and feel powerless, shit happens."

"Agreed." Goodwitch replied as she shoot a look at the man before sighing. "Now go get some rest and recuperate, dismissed."

Exiting the building the group had been sequestered to, Shayna let out a sigh and shook her head before speaking to her friends. "Well so much for a first mission; one that was independent too."

"He wasn't wrong." Samson replied as he ran a calloused hand through his short red hair wearily as the group gradually made their way through the campus towards where their Club's House was located. "Shit does happen especially amongst the Standard Core."

Shayna frowned at that; considering that Sam had been within the Standard Core it wouldn't be all that surprising if he had lost teammates and others fighting on the front; bad but not really surprising.

"Nor was Goodwitch when she said that we did fairly well against the Ursa pak which had the element of surprise." Bethany added quiety trying to keep her face from falling, all the while ignoring the glances and looks of those freshmen who were present on the academy grounds. Stepping near her self-esteem shot friend almost self-consciously, the group drew closer to one another as they got ever closer to building that was their home in all but name.

Shayna frowned as she took both of her friends thoughts into account as Roy also added his thoughts, the faunus teen's second pair of ears low to his head as occasionally looked towards the ground. Reaching an arm out she rested it on his shoulder and smiled as he gave her a quick turn of the edges of his lips.

If nothing else; they were there for each other she mused as they approached the stone steps which led up the Order of the Forge's main door. Reaching the door first Sam held the door open for she and the other before following them in. Entering the building's part living room part mainroom she and the others came to a stop as they saw all of the Club's more senior members including the senior team waiting for them.

Walking up to them was one of the senior girls; a snake faunus if she remember correctly, who then paused before the group and looked between each of the freshmen and smiled gently. "We got back yesterday and we were informed not too long ago of something going wrong on your field mission; wanna talk about what happened?"

Shayna and the other members of team Brass looked between each other before Bethany bit her lip, stepped forward and nodded.

Nodding back the Senior smiled encouragingly before placing her arm around Bethany's shoulders and motioned towards the others. "Then let's talk it over together."

@SirHades2.0 hey nice finale for Brass flowed much better some spelling errors that jump out at you, otherwise nice work.

The whole thing with jet is supposed to be his nervous twitch., he keeps bolstering and upholstering his weapon. I changed it to have him actual draw his weapon but, more of a pre fight fluff showing the team is still awkward and didn't instantly click like other teams.

Sorry for late replies, I've just discovered my cat can find his way home across suburbian rooftops and I've been far too drunk or otherwise mentally altered to do any writing or commentary in the past few days :3

Sorry to bug you in the throes of writing but, for worldbuilding purposes in this campaign, how much is a lien worth compared to real-world money? Basically how much lien would a standard-quality mechashifting eapon for a Hunter cost? Thousands of Lien? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands?

Let's go with a Lien = a $ for ease of use.

Weapons depend on a variety of factors including dust channeling circuits, mechashift parts, etc.

Your regular military grade (cheapest bidder) no frills rifle would be at around 1.5k Lien. Hunter items of around the same grade (for their standards) would be 10x the price, so 15k Lien, as in a top of the line rifle with no other functionality than being a really good gun.

Crescent Rose = 45k
Ember Celica = 30k
Gambol Shrould = 40k
Myrtenaster= 80k (Ridiculously good crafting)

Hunter weapons be expensive.

*Honestly take these figures with a grain of salt at the moment*

I will be with these once I sober up in the next day or so. Probably day. No promises~

Thought I lost my cat for realsies when he didn't come home last night / this morning. Spent most of the day looking for him all over the neighborhood and across my rooftop where I let him out to sunbathe. Little shit apparently was staying nice and cosy in someone's balcony or house given he dropped off the rooftops which I spent hours looking/waiting on top of and onto my own balcony. The flakes of fish that dropped off his muzzle fuzz and into his watering bowl kinda points him making a new friend out of one of my neighbors as well.

Bright side, my cat has returned from battling the non-existent super owl. Bad side, I got next to no writing done -_-;

This little turd

Or your cat has made an enemy rather than a friend of one of your neighbours when they find he slipped into their apartment and ate their pet goldfish.

But what the hell - cats are cats. What can you expect?

(Although I must say that, from the picture, he's a very nice-looking cat)
