Encounters in Vacuo
Kelly sucked in deep breaths as she slipped through a concealed gap in a chain link fence. From there she bounced up the wall of the office buildings with aura enhanced legs. Around her the lights of office buildings flickered as she made her way ever closer to her destination by rooftop.
Curses and rattled chain in the street behind her brought a small smile as her pursuers were delayed by the fence. Now she just needed to extend her lead to a comfortable margin before others spotted her and thought to resume the chase. Aura powered jumps saw her sailing over gaps between buildings and avoiding further patrols. Whilst not the fastest she could go it was a quiet steady run and it was always good to have something in reserve for when she had to kick it up a notch.
Surviving the gangs and navigating their territory was always about making yourself not worth the hassle. Too fast, too strong these went hand in hand with not being a threat and not being worth chasing. It was practically an unwritten rule in Vacuo.
Kelly treated it like a fact of life.
Whilst she ran numbers and messages across lines she had a good reputation that she needed to thrive in this place, but never too good, she had to survive to grow.
If Kelly had one weakness she recognised, it was ambition, she wanted more from life, surviving wasn't enough, she wanted to thrive, to spread her wings and soar.
Passing the markers of the Dock Rats and into the warehouses, she slowed and took deeper breathes back in safe ground for now. This did not stop her from watching the shadows for movement and shine that should not be there. Underhill Boyz were not known for being the smartest of gangsters with respecting others turf. They had started more than one fight that way in the last few years, so it always paid to keep a look out.
It was always from the shadows they struck, just when you let your guard down.
Eyes and eyes flicking about, Kelly continued her trek up to the warehouse that was tonight's drop off point.
She knocked on the door once - pause - thrice - pause - once - then finally twice.
The metal door swung open revealing a scarred middle age gangster in work clothes with gun hidden just to the side not quite out of view, from those directly in front of the door.
"Swell night we're having, ain't it?"
Kelly snorted before replying snarkily, " Maybe for you I got sand everywhere running up the beach."
Tension loosened from his joints but the gun never wavered.
" Package or message?"
Kelly reached into the satchel that hugged her lower back and handed over the small container.
The gunman took the package and handed it off behind him. Kelly waited a minute as the gunman kept an almost bored watch of her and the front door.
" It's all here" soon bounced out from behind the door and Kelly's payment was quickly handed over and counted out in front of the smirking gangster.
" Ah, now Kitty-kat don't you trust us?"
Kelly almost wanted to hiss at the man, she stored her cash and double zipped it before tucking her satchel under her plain grey baggy shirt.
Instead of replying to the taunt she merely looked at the gunman.
" The Boyz were able to follow me all the way up baker street tonight. Your men are getting lazy."
The man cursed and handed over another 10 lien 'For the information' and a quick assurance that they would have it sorted, had her smirking and trotting down the road, ears still flicking this way and that.
Glancing up slowly sinking moon then around the street, Kelly ran a mental tally for tonight's haul from message running and her little 'bonus', she nodded and began a more roundabout route to the shelter. a Warm bed and lay in sounded just right for Saturday morning.
Traversing the rest of the city, took her the better part of another hour but such were the needs to not bring work home with her to the little sanctuary.
Ahead on the street she saw a few familiar faces and backs that were headed the same way. Smirking she bounced up the roof tops before slamming down next to the group to the surprise of most of them. Her snickered as she shoulder her way forward and caught up with Cindy, her best friend who merely rolled her eyes and smirked back at the other kids complaining about her surprise landing.
She bumped Cindy's shoulder in an affectionate nudge before being cut off from her usual greetings.
" So run across any Black Ice tonight?"
Around her the group of preteens began to snicker as Kelly released a groan of frustration.
Kelly was very thankful her darker colouration would not show her blush as she grumbled into her shirt.
" No, he was over in Jojo's turf tonight. Other side of the city from the docks, but I did get chased by the UnderHill Boyz further into the rat nest than usual."
Cindy grunted at that information, before quickly turning the conversation back to her teasing.
"Pity, might have been able to watch him in action again hmmmm~?"
"Shut up!" Internally Kelly regretted ever mentioning her habit of following the man when they crossed paths to Cindy.
Beside her, Cindy brushed shoulders again to show she was just teasing to which Kelly huffed before smiling softly.
They really did owe a lot to the man. He made sure they had warm beds and food to return to at the shelter. It wasn't much but it was enough for people like them. They even had a few self help books on cooking meals, fighting, survival in the wild, reading, writing and arithmatic that made it easier for those attending school throughout the week.
Soon the group of youngsters turned onto a street and came within sight of the shelter which prompted a visible shift in the kids as they relaxed and started to talk and joke amongst each other.
Kelly began to stretch out to get rid of lingering aches and pains from her night of running across streets and rooftops, Cindy turned and opened her mouth to ask her something.
Whatever was about to be asked was halted abruptly as a hand shot out from a darkened alleyway off to the side a hand lashing out and grabbing a hold of Cindy and dragging her back.
'Stupid' Kelly mentally cursed herself as she whipped around to face the new threat, she and the rest of the kids raced into the alley after Cindy only to pull up short.
The kidnapper was man who had a knife to Cindy's throat, his back to the wall of the dead end, and a large gun pointed right at the group of kids.
The man's hand twitched erratically side to side aiming at a different kid every few moments.
" The money. Give me your money you little brats!"
Was it wrong that Kelly was actually relieved that he only wanted money? She knew of muggers that wanted more in this city.
However, there was now a hesitance as the kids took in the situation before they began to weigh it up.
Whilst Kelly would have given up her entire savings to set Cindy free she knew some of the kids would not be so altruistic and this man would probably not accept only some of them paying him. She swallowed, eyeing those around her and the man holding Cindy, this was going to be a standoff neither side would win and Cindy would probably die because of it.
"Put the gun down."
A deep bass voice echoed down the alleyway freezing everyone in its tracks. Deep clanking steps as the speaker emerged into the dimly lit area. He towered over the everyone present in his plate armour, helmet affixed, deep blue eyes shining through the narrow slit. Kelly's eyes widened as she realised just who had strode forth.
'holyshit holyshit it's him!!! The Black Ice!' Kelly's mind went into overdrive as she stared at the hero made real before her.
His black armour covered his form before showing the dark under armour of tight fabrics. small streaks of blood could be seen here and there but the seemed to just heighten the dread his very presence gave off.
" STAY BACK!! I need the money!!!"
The frantic mugger's cries drove the situation back into the forefront of Kelly's mind. Snapping back to Cindy and the mugger, Kelly saw that now the man was focused only on the Knight figure, gun no longer switching between targets.
Around the alley, eyes began to flick back and forth from the mugger, the gun and finally the knight.
" I understand, but this is a mistake. Please we don't need to do this. What's your name? I'm sure we can find some work for you and help for whatever your going through."
The black knight began a slow walk towards the mugger like a truck rolling down hill, steady and unstoppable. Each of the knight's footsteps resounded in the otherwise silent alleyway.
"STAY BACK!"
"I can't do that."
The gun began to tremble in the man's grasp.
" I just want you to stay back. I will shoot you!"
Step by step the knight continued to walk forward, fearless in front of the threat he faced.
One wrong twitch all it would take to break this escalation.
Surely.... any moment now.....
" You don't want to do that. It would be a mistake. You haven't done anything that can't be taken back yet. Put the gun down walk away, there are other better ways to help yourself out."
" The kids will chase me down! I can't do it!"
"Right now they just want their friend back, to go to the shelter, eat some food and go to bed. The only one who can decide that is you, just put the gun down and walk away."
Here the knight halted his march a mere few feet away from the trembling gun, his hands slowly tracing up in a steady unstoppable movement like some clockwork statute his movements were streamlined and steady.
" Make the right choice. Please."
The world around her seemed to still in this moment of ultra definition, the world moved slower as if holding it's breathe. In this slowed time Kelly took in her surroundings with heightened clarity her eyes flicking over the tapestry before her slowed to a stillness.
Kelly took it all in, from the grubby appearances of the other street kids with their eyes flicking between the two main characters, The Knight, the Mugger, the gun, Cindy, even the blood from the Black Knights wounds as droplets hung in the air on the way to the ground to join a forming puddle.
Wait.
What?
Startled, the world snapped back into normal flow of time as Kelly lost the clarity of focus, suddenly Kelly's heart seemed to be beating even harder and her breath came in silent gasps. Her eyes however were stuck on the approaching calamity.
The knights arms were halfway towards the gun. The gun had stopped trembling altogether and the gunman's focus was on the Knight. The gunman drew in a breath resolve settling in his eyes as he began to squeeze ----
" I'm Cindy. You can trust him he's the Black Ice. What's your name?" Cindy, in the mugger's arms suddenly cut through the building tension.
The mugger seemed to draw in another breath. He readjusted his grip on the gun.
He blinked a few times.
Ran his tongue over his lips.
" I'm Clark."
The knife and the gun tipped out of his hands as he released Cindy.
The gun was caught by the knight's outstretched hands. Cindy stumbled forward before rushing around the bulk of her saviour and out of the alleyway, the rest of the kids streaming after her.
"I'm sorry."
Clark's voice called to Cindy's back who stopped in her flight, turned glanced at the man for a moment before continuing to run off to the shelter.
"It's alright Clark." The knight reached out another hand and shook the almost mugger's hand, as he did he handed off a business card.
" Thank you for making the right choice, you can go now. You can call that number later today and ask for help if you would like"
Clark looked up at the towering figure before nodding and walking slowly out of the alleyway and into the now rays of new morning light.
Left in the alleyway alone with the knight, Kelly watched as the knight's shoulders slumped as he slowly emptied the cartridge of the gun before moving to pocket it in a satchel at his hip, right next to his
un-drawn sword.
" He could have shot you."
The question seems to break the thoughts of the knight as he jerks before turning to face Kelly, tilting his helmet ponderously to one side.
He seemed to weight the question in his mind, letting it roll and shift through thoughts, before nodding his head.
" He could have. But he didn't."
Kelly frowned up at the blue eyes, cat ears atop her head flicking back and forth angrily, her gaze insistent.
" But he could have. Your bleeding. That means your aura is still regenerating and you're not bullet proof. That gun would have punched right through your armour from that close."
His gaze turned down to the large gun, in anyone else's hands it would be large, almost a hand cannon, in his it seems too small to offer him injury. He nods.
" Yes it would have. But I don't step in front of guns just because I'm bulletproof."
Kelly's eyes widened at this revelation.
'Was this what it meant to be a Hero?'
She swallowed, new questions on the tip of her tongue, but they all seemed to catch in her throat before they could even be voiced. None seemed the right to ask here and now.
The knight watched the young girl struggle internally with this new information for a few moments, before inclining his head and turning towards the alley entrance.
"Why?"
The question burst forth from Kelly's mouth, lest it always go unanswered stilled the knight for a moment before he resumed his walk. As he went he called out over his shoulder.
" You all needed help. What else was I supposed to do?"
AN.
