I didn't realize the amount of Thanatonium being used in the series (even with it being made up) was so minuscule, yet so potent...
Well the amounts seem pretty reasonable compared to something like antimater. A single corrosive torpedo contains 50mg of Thanatonium. If that was antimater instead, it would create a 2.148 kT explosion.

And her introduction was very dynamic
By snagging I-401 in a graviton lockon beam
Looks like Vampire is the only one who will be able to save the White Whale. Unless There is the signal to trigger Repulse showing up at MAXIMUM MEIDO MOVEMENT!
Also Kirishima practices her infiltration skills only to find Chief Engineer Iori's in good shape but pretty much a prisoner in her own room. And it's really got the battleship pissed off

Consider that Mutsu's sister has the dual seductive courtesan and elegant court lady look, which echoes the Nagato Province's own history in politics (there are treaties, 1894 if I'm reading this right, between Japan and Great Britain / USA that specifically mention the Province), this is honestly not all that surprising.
Mutsu was named after the Mutsu Province, which was first formed in 709, gained prominence in 1185 (becoming one of the bigger provinces in Japan, with Hokkaido being larger) and was invaded by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1189 who eventually conquered it. During the Sengoku period, the province was divided between the Date, Nanbu, Souma, Iwaki, and Uesugi Clans. Eventually, under the Meiji Government after the Boshin War, the original Mutsu Province was divided into five separate Provinces, Iwaki, Iwashiro, Rikuzen, Rikuchuu, and Mutsu.
Basically, the province has seen a lot of activity from the samurai and their clans, especially some of the more famous ones such Uesugi Kenshin and Date Masamune.

Cheers! Now that you mentioned that bit, it means that that school-girl Nagato is more than likely a reference to the Choushuu Five, who were based from the Yamaguchi Prefecture, of which the Nagato Province is a part of.

Nagato in her dancer kimono/meji-era uniform is fine and sensible at least to be moving around in.
Mutsu feels like she just one day stumbled into a Japanese teashop, saw a samurai/shogunate-display and die-hard stole its clothes and wears. Those multi layed ceremonial clothing in real life is no where near comfortable to be worn, and arm-guards? Maybe she's wearing a vest underneath all that too lol.
Coastal pirates take heed! I have a giant two-hand-samurai-blade and a blessed bow that I won't hisitate to use, (and these giant guns that shoots space-laser),hmmmm maybe..I would be scared shetless by that.

I also wonder if Haguro and Ashigara were part of Nagato's fleet as we see after they made their mini mental models were wearing rather traditional outfits as seen with the sisters
And I counter with the following: Mental Models.
When we're talking about clothing, we've seen the following so far, ballgowns, school uniforms, a highly modified miko outfit, a courtesan kimono (draping and all), a massive overcoat, casual wear, a space suit, and a teddie bear.
We are so far beyond practical battle wear that it's gotten a little silly, truth be told, to consider practicality, and more than that, chances are, with how bullshit Mental Models on their own are, Mutsu could solo (...I'm aware that there are two Mental Models, but they are considered the same being) a human army with their ceremonial-looking weapons. After all, Haruna wrecked those soldiers attacking the Osakabe Mansion while dressed in her massive overcoat, and even had it play a practical role by protecting Makie as she moved...and this was after she had lost her hull and a lot of her nanomaterial.
Next you mentioned that they are ceremonial, but as far as I've been able to figure out from a quick search, the exact outfit doesn't seem to exist. There are influences from some other garbs, including the Bukan sokutai sugata and the Joue, but the thing that throws it all off is that the whole thing is much less ostentatious than the former and more more martial than the latter.

Our little teddy bear Kiri-shima is named after the battle ship 霧島, which translates to fog island btw.

This is the formal court wear of the military official (which is the meaning of "bukan"). It was worn only by military officials of the fourth court rank and below. Men of the first through third rank wore the bunkan sokutai even if they held military appointments.
First, the kanmuri has a ken'ei (a wrapped tail) and oikake (lacquered horsehair "blinders" that sit on the cords of the kanmuri). The shoes are lacquered leather kanokutsu (a riding boot). Since this is a military outfit, a sword (hosotachi) is worn off the hirao, while a bow (yumi) is held in the hands. A quiver--either a hira yanagui (square quiver) or tsubo yanagui (a round quiver). I guess the clothing actually reflect rank, so then it makes more sense for Mutsu to wear it. Then again, is Mutsu trying to project her authority as the main powerhouse of the fleet?

Maybe because Konguou runs her fleet more like a Hierarchy than as a family, though Haruna and Kirishima started off seemingly much closer than siblings, as there is a lot of trust and synchronicity between the two.
