You decide, after looking out at the waste that seemed to stretch on forever, that it'd probably be better to hunker down for a few hours, and get a feel for the cave that you've found yourself in. You turn around, and begin mapping out the cave. It takes a bit, but you manage to get a general idea of the entrance, the chamber that you found yourself in after hatching, and another, smaller chamber that was further along.
You decide to move deeper, and find more tunnels, as the tunnels seemingly take you deeper and deeper into the darkness.
The darkness here feels… strange. You don't know how to describe this darkness, but it doesn't seem right. It doesn't belong… that would be the best way to describe it, your mind racing with all manner of explanations as to how such a thing could be possible.
For a while, as you use your dark vision and your innate magic to navigate the caves, nothing seems to be off… Other than the darkness, and the strange smell. The smell seems to be getting stronger as you go down. The smell itself seems to resemble what you imagine to be a rotten egg, but your instincts, your gut, tells you otherwise.
The smell and the strange feeling begins to reach a sort of peak, as you move, and you finally find yourself staring at a… wall? Not a wall, you correct yourself, but what seems to be the remnants of a cave in. Much of the sandstone and rock is covered in sand, and you can sense much of it is very loose on the other side… Some kind of purposeful walling off? But why?
All these questions seem to burn in your mind, as you begin to think of what could've happened…
Beneath the Sulfur Sun…
The smell of sulfur seeps through the wall before you… are you willing to traverse the depths of the Desolation?
This is your first encounter with a main quest! There are always substantial rewards involved in each of these main quests, but there is also immense risk. If you are not careful, your death is guaranteed. I also feel that it's important to mention that each main quest is NOT mandatory. You could ignore it if you want, but you would also lose out on both rewards, and important pieces of information…
Now, back to the quest.
You shake off these thoughts. Now is not the time to be distracted. You've managed to map out the cave and decided on your next objective… finding water.
Using your innate connection to sand, you begin to feel out the sand and through the sandstone walls of the cave around you. You begin looking all over the cave's range for some manner of water that you could make use of. You find some underground sources of water, but they're currently inaccessible to you.
After some dedicated searching, you manage to find an underground water source that's easily accessible. There isn't too much water hidden within its depths, but it would be enough to last you a while. A few weeks at the very least. You decide to get a drink of some, and using your sand magic, as well as your miniscule mana pool, you manage to create a little divot in the ground. You open up a small part of the lake, and water comes flowing through, slowly. You begin to drink some of it, making sure you aren't thirsty in the slightest.
After hydrating yourself, you decide that it would also be good to fill up your stomach, as all the work has left you hungry. Moving to the chamber where you hatched, you find the other egg. It seems to be a dud, so might as well eat it so you could benefit, no?
Prodding at the egg, you try to bite into it, but find it to be too hard to bite into. Through some clever thinking, you decide that perhaps using a rock would be better than trying to brute force the egg open. After finding a sizable rock for the task, you swing at the egg a few times.
You hear a crack, and you begin to swing once more, each swing being accompanied with greater cracks. After one more swing, you crack the egg open to find… juices. The very same stuff that you found yourself in once you awakened within the egg. Except, for this egg, there never was a little dragon to incubate within it. You stare at it for a while longer, before deciding to dig in.
The egg and the juices within taste wonderful, better than anything you've ever tasted… except this is the only thing you've ever managed to eat, so the bar was as low as it could get. Crunching begins to fill the chamber, as you finish slurping up the juices of the egg, and begin to focus on eating the shell. You find it to be quite delectable, and before long, you've already devoured the egg in its entirety.
With that delicious note, you look around for a while, not knowing what else to do. You've eaten and drank enough water to last you a few days, and you should be fine for a while. Looking at the outside of the cave, you begin to notice the sun has begun to dip a little. The shadows outside the cave seemingly grew a little longer. You've been at it a while, huh?
You lay in what could be considered your home for a bit and decide that, after having finished exploring things externally, maybe it was time to explore things internally. You focus within yourself and try to find something within. Then something rings within your mind… the power calls to you. You try to reach for it, but you struggle. It seems to be too far away.
Wild Magic:
Requirement: 15 Magic
Leaving your "zen" state, you find yourself to be mentally exhausted. It takes some rest but you do manage to recover. You look outside the cave, and find that the sun has begun to sink, and that the world has begun to grow darker.
Night approaches…
Stat(s) Gained:
1 Mental, for entering the depths of your mind.
2 Magic, for recognizing your Wild Magic, and for making extensive use of your innate sand magic.
I did say there was going to be a surprise, now wasn't I? The name of the main quest is a reference, and a cookie to those who can recognize it.
If you're wondering why things haven't gotten difficult yet, it's because of y'alls work on the talents. Things would've been much harder without the ability to look for water through the use of your "sand sense", but due to your clever thinking, the difficulty has been alleviated… slightly.
Wild Magic is also currently out of your reach, as you don't have enough Magic to access it, but you're getting there. The requirement would've been MUCH higher without Ars Magica. I've also heard of people's want to become the Iymrith, and I'm probably going to feed into that fantasy, huh?
Anyways, as always, be free to ask me questions, and I'm hoping y'all will be willing to stick with me through this journey.
See y'all next time!
