An Oni between Worlds (Kasen Quest, Touhou/???)

Go away and take your rational arguments with you, Synsystem. Let me bitch in peace.

Seriously speaking, I am relatively okay with original series, A's, and maybe StrikerS (I need to finish that series one day), but I haven't heard any good things about continuity beyond that, and that really worries me.

Well of course you haven't heard any good things. Nanoha isn't the protagonist anymore. :V

Pity Overlord didnt win. The whole entire setting would be turned on it's head with people actually capable of opposing Ainz existing.

Looks like we're getting Nanoha which is one of the two setting that has people that can flat out stomp Kasen.

True although that makes the story a bit more interesting, but keep in mind that we haven't really seen Kasen go all out just yet. Hell last I checked the only time we see her fight even semi-seriously is during Urban Legends In Limbo and there she was worried that she'd accidentally destroy the Hakurai Shrine in the process.

Also if you go by the legend she is based off of there is a slight chance that she and Suika were lovers at one point.

Ha.

Well, her Urban Legend self seems to purposefully avoid using anything what might gave away her nature. She pretty much exclusively uses her pets and fake arm to fight.

Truly, a cardinal sin.

Ah, but we don't know what's up Nanoha side either...especially since magic there is science as well.

Magic might be science in Nanoha but Kasen's arrival isn't something that would be thought of as a product of science. The effects described in the Mahouka verse is unique to Mahouka.

Do keep in mind that there is ten years for you to butterfly away StrikerS, much less Vivid. Force isn't counted as Canon for the purpose of this Quest.

Now onto the matter of people discussion Kasen's power:

Keep in mind a few things
1. We only see her fight in ULIL which are all essentially spell card battles

2. Spell card battles aren't good representation of a character's power because they are made to be fair, designed so the other side does in fact have a chance of victory.

3. The fighting games are rather unimpressive in showing what a character can do. Aya or Remilia move at the slow speeds they moved at in touhou 12.3 if it wasn't a spell card battle? A laugh. Suika not hitting you with dozen of mini-suika's shooting bullets at you while she is invulnerable mist, or her black holes being as weak and temporary as it is? Koishi not taking advantage of the fact that you only remember her as long as you see her and only if she allows you to see her? The list goes on.

edit 4. Also she intentionally holds from anything that might identify her as an oni.

All the games are the characters battling each other while intentionally restricting themselves.

My mind paints Kasen as being the second most powerful of the four Devas of the mountain, due to her importance in the legends, with her sometimes being ranked Shuten-doji's lieutenant or even wife. Weaker in strength and magic to Suika, weaker in physical strength to Yuugi, but not necessarily weaker magically than Yuugi.

Keep in mind Yuugi's magical feats in spell card battles, such as screaming to the extent that all the trees around her flatten, or utilizing a stream of fire that Aya states could burn up one or two human villages in an instance.

Besides, being weaker physically than Suika or Yuugi doesn't mean too much when their physical strength is as ridiculous as it is.

Currently 569 words into next part. Will try updating my third thread post with a daily update on how my chapters are progressing.

My approach to measuring the power level of Touhou is "whatever fits the fanfic". I'd be surprised if Touhou even had a canon to derive facts from.

Stick to mostly the official entries, though; a lot of the information there is unreliable.
Was just linking to the article on what's canon. The articles on the characters are only really good for finding which game's dialogue/profile/whatever else has the information you're looking for. I've seen a lot of claims on there that aren't cited, and looking for a source didn't turn out any results. :V

Though to be fair they even say that themselves.

For encyclopaedic information on the Touhou Project, online wikis' main objective is to provide the fanbase with detailed information on the work itself. However, since they're secondary sources written by fans of the project, information may not be 100% reliable. Additionally for the western community, this would be due to the accuracy a translation needs to be in order for it to be reliable.

1.1 Eventful Meetings
Before I go to bed (work nights so sleep during the day) I figure I'll post the section: Not sure how happy I am with it though.

1.1 Eventful meetings

It was a small act, picking up that blue stone. In a sense it was captivating and dazzling, and when he had looked it up online, he had trouble finding any other stone quite like it.

In short, the simple stone was better by far to Jin Waotaka than the garbage he had to take care of at work.

The Uminari museum of Legends and Mysteries, in his eyes was truly fraudulent. He might keep the place clean, but that was his job, not out of any particular respect for the place. It did a decent enough job of educating people on folk lore, but it museum pieces really were audacious.

Sasaki's sword, Monohoshi Zao. Some shavings of Orochi's skin as well as one of its fangs. A fragment of the Sessho-seki. The insanity of actually claiming to possess these things was ludicrous.

As he swept the floor he came towards perhaps the greatest insult. A box, sealed, claiming to contain Ibaraki-doji's arm. For all he knew it could be empty and no one would be the wiser.

A few blocks away at the same time a girl in a black outfit that wouldn't look out of place in a cosplay, holding a silver staff whose end formed a black axe head with a yellow gem in the middle"Its a bit rough, but I am going to shower the area with magical power and force it to execute"

She mustn't disappoint her mother after all. If it was the last thing she would do, she would see her mother smile once more.

Yet her familiar interrupted her, "Hey, hold on! I'll do that"

Within Jin's pocket the Jewel Seed awoke. Upon seeing a rock begin to glow with power he knew not, he did what any sane man would do, he threw it away and ran. That it hit the box with Ibaraki doji's arm was merely a coincidence.

It awoke, it has been a long time since its last use, the thick magic in the air fed it but it required more. The seals on the box next to it sufficed for a short boost, however what was within was the real prize.

A mere hand should not contain magical power when removed from the body for centuries but this one did. Moreover as organic matter it was a suitable host.

It thrummed raising to yet greater heights, sorting through an algorithm to determine which function it would attempt to execute. The arm was dead so empowerment of host was impossible. It required resonance for a proper cascade of jewel seeds to tear a permanent and safe bridge through imaginary space to a parallel world. However a temporary tug, to bring an alternate originator of the arm was possible with this power. Not safe, but it was the only task it could properly execute.

And so it pulled through the cascade of realities at the first being who appeared to meet the requirement. Success was met.
However this arm was not quiet theirs, it didn't match completely.

Attempt at parallel synchronization processing

roll of 4= failure
...Failure

You are Kasen Ibaraki, and the feeling of everything twisting around you is disorienting to the point where you almost spill your sake.
The sudden assault of pain in your right arm at the same moment could have been debilitating but with an effort of will you easily suppress it.

roll of 19

Wait. Right arm?

For a moment, as you see your right arm has flesh once more, joy feels you.

However shortly after it is followed by far greater anger.

It is not your arm. Some being dare place another arm in place of your own. Your desire to kill and tear down all in your path; to bring grim justice on those who wronged you rises.

With a force of will you repress the desire, you are not ever going back to who you once were.
however, while fighting to repress your rage, you make no notice of a brown hair girl in white entering the room
You shift your box of one hundred medicines to your left hand as black smoke starts to permeate from your right arm, and in short order it begins to rot and falls off. That is alright, it is not yours. Never yours.

Before you can reform your bandages into the shape of an arm once more, blue light begins to dance within the smoke, greedily drinking its power, as a blue stone starts to glow.

roll 14
.

The world shakes in response to the stone, concerning, but what moves you far more at the moment is the fact that it probably has something to do with that fake arm.

You focus your will against its own, and, perhaps predictably since it is currently in a nexus of your power, it calms, potential disaster averted.
With your left hand you pick up the stone as bandages form around your right.

You remind yourself to stay calm. The path of the Hermit isn't in anger. With a deep breathe you calm down, take a sip of sake, and start to analyze your surroundings.

The paintings on the walls were all of various legends, plaques adorning them, noting their origin. On the ground is a sealed box whose lid claims to have contained your arm. Yet it was obviously another fake. Which meant that the various artifacts of youkai and heroes in the room are also fake, and only for display. Is this a museum?

However much more importantly you see a girl, who looks to be at the physical age of between eight and ten stare at you in wide-eyed horror. Not that physical appearance necessarily matters. You ponder for a moment, if she was the one who called you here, a magician youkai trying to force you to become her familiar perhaps? You can sense the obviously magical nature of the outfit she is wearing and her staff seems to fit the image of one though it was... odd. Yet you discard her as the cause, or at least intentionally the cause, horror instead of triumph at the summoning made no sense. While unless you failed to properly bind that which you summon. In which case standing in horror made no sense, and the proper response was running for your life, or if you were stronger, destroying that which you conjured.

After a moment of you staring at her she seems to recover herself, and runs over to you.

"Are you ok, what happened to your arm, the jewel seed... are you alright?!" her voice cracks and her purple eyes starts to tear up. A mark in her favor that her first reaction once she recovers herself is concern.

[x] I'm fine
[x] it wasn't my arm
[x] explain how it wasn't your arm
-[x] How do you choose to explain?
[x]try to calm her down
[x] try to get her to explain the situation. She mentioned something about a Jewel Seed?
[x]freeze because you have no idea what to say to her that will make this situation make sense.
[x] explain that the box needed an arm and so you decided to provide one. (any attempt to use an option like that is automatically veto'd :p )
[x] write in

Also
[x] Remain in room for conversation
[x] leave room for conversation

and on the subject of arms:
[x] Destroy the fake
[x] Leave it on the ground
[x] Put it back in the box. No one will be the wiser. Might need to explain to Nanoha that it wasn't your arm.
[x] write in.

Author note: This is self edited shortly after I wrote it which is the worst way to edit things, so I do apologize if there are any mistakes.

To be honest I didn't quite intend originally intend for Nanoha to see your arm rot off... it just happened and I couldn't bring myself to delete it. It is a bit of a far step off of traditional Nanoha series (as injures are rarely large... Unless it is Nanoha force attempting to be "dark". Wait Force? Force doesn't exist. Never did. Don't know what I am talking about).

Keep in mind that Nanoha is at this time a nine year old girl. A nine year old girl that just walked in on a person whose arm rotted off before her eyes whilst Kasen showed no visible signs of pain. After which Kasen Sealed the Jewel seed on her own, and made a magical artificial arm. Visibly you looked annoyed at most, successfully repressing your rage. Horror and Confusion is abound here.

Also keep in mind that Kasen thinks Nanoha is a magician youkai, and probably doesn't realize that Nanoha is actually nine-years old.
On the other hand Kasen is not in a very good mood or calm, for hopefully understandable reasons.

If you were wondering what reason 4 roll was it was: if the number was even Nanoha was closer to you, Odd Fate was closer to you.
Take heart that at least Fate didn't have to witness that and beat herself over causing that to happen to you.

Don't think I caught Nanoha's voice. In part because I have a hard time imagining how a Nine year old Nanoha would react to seeing something like that. Might need to re-watch a few episodes of Nanoha again to get a better feel of the character. What a shame :p.

Cut off part of Fate's and Arf conversation in part because I don't want to have to have a long section with word for word dialogue from the show.

and yes I gave Jewel Seeds that functionality. Whether it has purpose besides as just a mechanism to bring you here... who knows ~

Thoughts, concerns?

Lets not hang around for Fate Interrupt.

[X] Explain how it wasn't your arm
-[X] Something or somebody probably attempted to summon me with what they thought was my arm, but since it wasn't real it didn't hold up for more than a second or two.

[X] Leave room for conversation
-[X] Best leave before whatever caused that summoning gets here; magicians tend to need prep time to be effective.

[X] Keep It and the box it came in. While it is a fake, it was a fake close enough that something managed to summon you with it (probably).
-[X] Maybe you could examine it later?

Well... the arm was used as a basis to summon her, wasn't it? So there's something going on with it, or was.

Also, F/SN stuff? Sasaki's sword and the Killing Stone too probably. Or at least name dropping it. If the arm was strong enough to use as a reagent to summon us then the others might have some traces at least still in them.

Arm was apparently a valid reagent, but not enough power to actually do it on it's own. Even a Jewel Seed's staggering power had to pull Kasen from a parallel dimension more easily than reconstituting the arm.

Odds are if we used Jewel Seeds on them we'd pull more Gensokyo inhabitants over. We got a swordsman and a fox.

It's in the museum anyway, so we can break in and loot it again if it's important. But a specific item missing can also draw attention and conclusions. If we put it back, only Nanoha knows anything...and she's NINE.

Something to consider, Kasen's past may not stay too secret for long. The box with Ibaraki's hand was an exhibit at the museum, and likely had at least a small placard about the oni's story. Nanoha may have visited the museum before, and might have a faint recollection of it. Or she might take a closer look now. Not to mention that there is the internet. What kept Kasen's secret safe in Gensokyo was that the records of her exploits were not accessible to everyone. Now, she might have some explaining to do eventually.

Well the current leading vote doesn't involve telling Nanoha that we were summoned or anything, so if we simply tell her that the arm attached itself to us against our will but we stopped it then we can deflect suspicion. We can easily use the "Hermit" cover story which conveniently also encompasses our lack of knowledge for modern technology.
