-- [><] The combat of the day
--[><] Try to explain the burger thing. Fail.
"I, uh... have never had a burger before, s-so... I just... was not... and... there was... crab meat, real crab... and... and..."
Neither Louise nor Sveta look convinced of your sincerity... or your sanity. In fact they look even less convinced than earlier. In their defense, you did just worship a burger. With your face.
"I... uhhh... nevermind."
A few awkward moments pass as the three of you try and get over the event that occurred, silently agreeing to speak of it to no one. Chuck Berry sings on about a country boy named Johnny B. Goode, oblivious and uncaring to the mood at table 5. Someone in the kitchen drops a metal pan loudly, shaking you all from your stupor.
"Soooo, Sveta, you were with Eli, correct?"
"Da?" she asks. In a tone that implies, 'Couldn't you think of literally anything besides combat to talk about?' She doesn't say it of course because that would be crass, but it's painfully apparent in her voice.
"What was she like in combat? What was it like for you in close combat, as an interceptor?"
"It was... Louise, what's the word I am looking for? Starts with a 'k' I think... fear of small spaces..."
"Claustrophobic?"
"Yes, that. It felt claustrophobic, being in a dogfight. We interceptor witches are trained to fight at as long a distance as we can manage; many times we never even saw our targets, even in training. The fighters prevented that for as long as they could.... uh, do not tell her I said this, but Eli wasn't helpful with that."
"Oh?"
"Really?"
"She was far more focused on eliminating the bombers than dealing with the fighters. I don't think she even noticed the fighters, let alone shot at them, until she got hit in the knee."
"She got hit? I did not notice."
"I didn't either, until I saw the blood. According to Ruya, this is not a rare occasion. In Syria she would frequently hide or ignore her wounds until she was literally about to collapse from them. And even then, sometimes it took their commanding officer's orders to keep her from the fight. The woman may be mad, but she is driven, and a skilled commander herself."
Well now.
