All Along the Watchtower - a Modern Strike Witches Quest

Well Imma let you in on a secret.

We'll be getting a strike fighter. Torn between the Su-30MKK and the Su-34.

The MKK is a genuine, more F-15E-like strike fighter. But I have a special place in my heart for the Platypus, partly because it's my main attacker in Ace Combat Infinity.

Which reminds me I should get back into it. I want the Adler, but 6 million credits... eeeeeehhh...
The MKK is an interesting proposition, but it's explicitly an export variant for the Chinese Air Force, ergo the Russians do not actually operate these aircraft.

Now an actual localised version meant for the Russian Air Force exists, the Su-30SM. However these were supposed to be delivered the same year as this quest, and an untested, rookie witch is unlikely to be allotted one to say the least. The Fullback is a much more feasible proposition as an upgrade for Klavdia.

[X] Go after the bombers

Nespresso, what else? If anything you can continue testing Orussian engineering in the best way possible short of bringing the two-headed eagle upon decadent Liberion. Just pray that the RNG doesn't shift from an uncaring Greek deity to an Elder One while you roll.

Post up tomorrow morning, I'm about halfway done but I don't want to write much this late at night because I tend to get a little loopy the later I stay up.

12.0 - Long Ranging

[><] Go after the bombers.

You are a little annoyed that Eli so swiftly took all your kills, even if it was mostly because your missiles screwed up.

"да Подполко́вник, Мла́дший лейтена́нт Федченко," you inform Eli in as polite a tone as possible. You don't expect her to understand Orussian.

She laughs. You're not sure if she understood or not.

"Хорошая попытка сука, но я говорю на орусском тоже," she replies. Dammit, she does.

"You two mind speaking English?"

You sigh, Eli smirks.

"Yes, Lieutenant Colonel, I will go with you to the bombers."

The two Liberion witches both grin.

"Excellent!" Eli exclaims, spreading her arms with the autocannons still in them. "Then we shall go. Empress to Bonneville, I am adding Captain el-Amin and Junior Lieutenant Fedchenko to A Flight and proceeding to engage the bombers, over.>>

<<Understood and roger, Empress. You watch yourself out there.>>

<<Hmh. I always do.>>

With that, the five of you proceed northward towards the bombers at the incredible speed of... 800 miles per hour. You slowly accelerate as you gain a few thousand feet, allowing you to push up to 900, then 1,000 miles per hour, but it's clear the Hornets and Raptors can and want to go faster. It feels less like a flight and more like an escort group.

You don't really like it.

The bombers themselves were 70 nautical miles away when you began your approach. Even at the speed you were travelling, it would only take a minute or so to get within AMRAAM range, but Eli orders the group to hold their fire until they're 20 nautical miles further in - she wants to get a better shot without getting too close.

"But what about me? I don't have any BVR missiles."

Eli shrugged. "Considering how we've done so far, I doubt you won't get your chance to shoot a Neuroi bomber down." She then muttered something about strangling whoever last worked on their AMRAAMs
At 40 nautical miles, the Liberions each fire one AMRAAM.

Accuracy (Eli): 93, 4, 91, 47, 58, 98, 38, 99, 90, 87
Damage (Eli): 68
Enemy Dodge (Eli): 3, 66, 94, 11, 70, 77, 54, 66, 50, 44(Hit!)
Enemy Armor (Eli): 4 (Full damage!)
Accuracy (Ruya): 2, 19, 60, 71, 1 (Failure!)
Accuracy (Felix One-Six): 2, 64, 8, 94, 40, 9, 65, 90, 38, 70
Damage (Felix One-Six): 89
Enemy Dodge (Felix One-Six): 96, 13, 89, 79, 38, 43, 61, 70, 60, 45 (Hit!)
Enemy Armor (Felix One-Six): 80 (Full damage!)
Accuracy (Felix One-Seven): 16, 61, 91, 98, 87, 28, 33, 82, 70, 20
Damage (Felix One-Seven): 62
Enemy Dodge (Felix One-Seven): 56, 91, 37, 96, 78, 100 (Failure!)

Eli's does the most damage. It hits the bomber dead on, and it drops into the water. That's the good news. The bad news is that Eli's was the only missile that got a kill. Felix One-Six's missile only slows it down, causing it to move into a tighter orbit. The other two are either complete lock failures or are shot out of the sky.

"Well, Fedchenko? Looks like you'll get your wish. A Flight to Bonneville, only got one kill from AMRAAMs. We're closing in.>>

I assume that we'll just switch targets if someone steals our kill again?

---

Also, why should we have to get closer to the water to see what's there? We've got fucking excellent radar.

Most likely, yeah. And radar can't penetrate water, now can it?
Then how would we know that there's anything there to even look for in the first place? Besides, we're not an ASW-capable fighter. Getting closer wouldn't let us detect submarines, let alone attack them.

It wouldn't make sense in-story, either. We just said we were going to attack the bombers. Pulling away suddenly to check out contacts we couldn't possibly suspect were even there, let alone see even if we were close to the water, just doesn't make sense.

Waffles wants Neuroi blood!

Joking aside, I agree with his analysis on IC action even if I disagree that figuring out WTF is going on trumps racking up our kill count. Plus, if we win, we can investigate anyways.

So with all that in mind...

The Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, John C. Stennis, and Carl Vinson were named after living politicians, the latter two after Congressmen. I did indicate that Yeager was a senator prior to being elected in 2012.
just to point out though, and I just realized this, carriers are normally named after either former Naval personnel or very good friends of the navy... And if I'm not mistaken Charlotte would be air force like her RL counterpart.

[X] Steal kills from Eli

It's not stealing, it's support. We're providing support. We're like an airborne bra of Neuroi-killing...Or something. I dunnow, somebody should vote for the red 'do not vote for this' option, right?

Well, there is the possibility she passed a VERY navy-friendly budget? They just happened to have enough funding for a whole extra carrier so the Navy went 'Hey, in the spirit of interservice cooperation, we'll name it after the dirty Chair-Force intrepid Air Force President'. :V

I'm guessing its going to have to be closer to providing the funding for a whole new CBG....

What?

Carriers used to be named after older ships and famous battles; the first bunch of fleet carriers were named after the old wooden frigates of the USN: Enterprise, Wasp, Hornet, etc, and battles: Lexington, Saratoga, etc. After that, the tradition largely continued: Bataan, Corregidor, Bunker Hill, etc.

The switch to naming carriers after US presidents was a relatively recent (and stupid) change to tradition.

But I don't recall carriers ever being "normally" named after former Navy personnel or good friends of the Navy.

I could see a carrier being named after a pioneering and famous war hero/aviator, though.

Hooray, it's time to kill bombers! But now I have to find a suitable image for them.

Just...please don't use Ace Combat Assault Horizon as inspiration for aerial combat...ever.

...or Ace Combat in general, really.
