Age of Ice and Blood: A Pathfinder System Heroic Fantasy Quest

…As we use a twice enchanted magic sword, are kept alive in battle through excessive usage of potions by a magic alchemist, count two magi among our close confidence, alongside a talking magic horse and an eldritch far realm boat. Entirely mundane :V

We are not magical ourselves and not a moron. But we are mundane

That seems more like quibbling over definitions to be tbh. If a "mundane" man were to arm himself in magic, make usage of magic, and in many ways be just as fantastical as a magi, would he still be mundane?

Imo a high level martial armed to the gills in enchanted gear is just as fantastical as a wizard; it's just a different flavor of such.

Agreed. I'm personally hoping for a Golden Lion discipline Warlord with the Bannerman Archetype. That will be very much like Roland as he has been, only dialed up to 11. Fun and strong, but with more options, and without leaning into magic or other really supernatural stuff.
Aesthetically not a fan of Bannerman, we should have people to carry our flag.
This would be more my preference, but straight Warlord is nice too.

We could have the Banner on our shield and still get the bonuses.

Bannerman is the most fitting of all possible Martial Initiator classes for Roland, IMO. It fits so perfectly and would act as an amped up Cavalier/Fighter build sorts like he already has now.

OOC: An otterkin Long Season mean five years, they count in base five not base ten. The otter-kin are going to try to trade for copper... also confederate since they got a background crit. Not yet edited.
I loved everything about this interlude, DP. Made me smile, and I definitely needed that today.

So cool to see more of the Otter-kin civilization. I didn't realize they had such a widespread population or organized culture. I hope Heavy Tail succeeds in his endeavors.

Glad you guys liked it, I did make the otter-kin seem rather insular, but that is because you guys did not spend that long with them and I wanted to keep the narrative focused on your own journey, dragonslaying and all.

Still if you will go back I did say there were others of their people about in that area of the world. They do not do as well on the steppe, but there there are forests and of course waterways they are quite happy to set up their homes and since they are small and well as very skillful fishers and only occasional hunters and gatherers they are not that much competition with the local Knikut.

I think once we started having more hp than a bear, we stopped being mundane. Psionic points as a thing we pick up don't greatly bother me, seeing as they're effectively adjacent to Ki points- the issue for me is:

A. It's an external power source, even if one fairly traded for, and as Tomcost says, I do like the how this quest has fortune favour the mortal man. Roland is capable of incredible feats, but that comes from a capability that's still very human, not drawn from sorcery or pacts or being a one in a million chance magical talent. All the magic we do use are items for which we rely on allies for or we earn/ win, more or less, which is much more within the realms of a knightly warrior hero than making a pact with an aberrant ship to draw on what is, by association, eldritch power.

B. DP mentioned there'd be an opportunity cost to Roland's build. If being a psion, even if in a relatively minor capacity, locks off our ability to e a Warlord, then I oppose it out of hand, really. Warlord is much cooler than being a pseudo Jedi/ monk, and I suspect mechanically stronger, if also more support focused, as well.

Regarding the psionics, is the Marcella directly showing us how to use it, or is the Marcella showing us how she comprehends the world and from there the effects that has on our fleshy brain enable us to learn psionics from the experience?

I'm curious of that as well. I've been assuming it to be a trade of knowledge. give her some of our "human" experiences (in the form of a feat) and she gives us some of her "far realm" experiences (in the form of psionics). I don't think it's a literal pact like a warlock or anything.

@DragonParadox if you're still up, are you willing to answer this?

*sleepy answer*: You do not actually make a pact with the ship, it would not have any power over you, nor would the psionics originate from it directly, rather it would allow you to access another layer of reality

Hope this is helpful.

I have seen some of the shit Martial Initiators are able to perform and calling that "a normal guy" is a lol.

Otoh if you want Roland to be awesome cause of his big herculean muscles thats fine :V

There are degrees of "Weeaboo Fighting Magic" on the martial initiator spectrum, from the hilariously supernatural to the only moderately extraordinary, depending on the class and disciplines one focuses on.

Warlord is the least blatantly "magical" class of them all, and that's the one we're leaning toward, plus the Golden Lion discipline is quite mundane, too.

Also, since we're limited to 6th character level in this setting, martial initiators can only learn maneuvers up to 3rd level. That puts a heavy limiter on even the really supernatural disciplines, like Riven Hourglass and Veiled Moon. There won't be any teleportation shenanigans to make someone hit themselves with their own attack or permanently banishing an enemy to the Astral Plane if they fail a Will save.

IIRC, the most magical thing a Golden Lion initiator can do using 3rd level and lower maneuvers is to use a Counter maneuver to pit their Diplomacy check against an enemy's attack bonus to protect a nearby ally from an attack.

[X] Accept, memories grow dim, and skills fade, but all around you whispers grow.... a glimpse of understanding (Exchange one feat of your choosing for Wild Talent; Unlocks Psionics)
-[X] Mounted Combat

[X] Refuse, as gently as you may, that is not a gift you wish, nor would you lose anything of what your life has made you

Something ya'll should keep in mind if you're going with the Wild Talent option is that the feat is actually completely useless to Roland right now and will be for a looong time to come. To take advantage of it will require him to either take levels in a sub-optimal class (and I'll be arguing against that at every opportunity) or invest in psionic feats, which are going to have a much lower priority than more important and immediately useful options like Weapon Focus, Steadfast Personality, etc. Yes, it makes new options available, but those options are unlikely to be relevant for months or even years to come, if they ever are.

I would definitely consider investing into skill focus diplomacy if we pick that maneuver

-[X] "Let us come to know one another as friends and companions have since time immemorial, through shared experiences and the steady march of time. There is no need to rush into your new existence, Marcella. You will have many opportunities to learn of us in the coming days, just as we will learn more of you."

As tempting as Psionic are, I will follow the lead of the war master and vote against the measure

Ngl I'm surprised the vote is this close I wholeheartedly expected to be maybe one of 2 people to have voted for the psionic option.

Interesting, 9 to 6. It seems like Psionics are hitting hard our mostly purist martial base.
